Strong maximum principle and boundary estimates for nonhomogeneous elliptic equations

We give a simple proof of the strong maximum principle for viscosity subsolutions of fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs on the form F(x,u,Du,D2u)=0 F(x,u,Du,D^2u) = 0 under suitable structure conditions on the equation allowing for non-Lipschitz growth in the gradient terms. In case of smooth boundaries, we also prove the Hopf lemma, the boundary Harnack inequality and that positive viscosity solutions vanishing on a portion of the boundary are comparable with the distance function near the boundary. Our results apply to weak solutions of an eigenvalue problem for the variable exponent pp-Laplacian.

Hölder continuity of quasiminimizers with nonstandard growth

We show the Hölder continuity of quasiminimizers of the energy functionals ∫f(x,u,∇u) dx\int f(x,u,\nabla u)\,dx with nonstandard growth under the general structure conditions ∣z∣p(x)−b(x)∣y∣r(x)−g(x)≤f(x,y,z)≤μ∣z∣p(x)+b(x)∣y∣r(x)+g(x). |z|^{p(x)} - b(x)|y|^{r(x)}-g(x) \leq f(x,y,z) \leq μ|z|^{p(x)} + b(x)|y|^{r(x)} + g(x). The result is illustrated by showing that weak solutions to a class of (A,B)(A,B)-harmonic equations −divA(x,u,∇u)=B(x,u,∇u), -{\rm div} A(x,u,\nabla u) = B(x,u,\nabla u), are quasiminimizers of the variational integral of the above type and, thus, are Hölder continuous. Our results extend works by Chiadò Piat-Coscia, Fan-Zhao and Giusti-Giaquinta.
