A lattice QCD perspective on weak decays of b and c quarks Snowmass 2022 White Paper

Lattice quantum chromodynamics has proven to be an indispensable method to determine nonperturbative strong contributions to weak decay processes. In this white paper for the Snowmass community planning process we highlight achievements and future avenues of research for lattice calculations of weak $b$ and $c$ quark decays, and point out how these calculations will help to address the anomalies currently in the spotlight of the particle physics community. With future increases in computational resources and algorithmic improvements, percent level (and below) lattice determinations will play a central role in constraining the standard model or identifying new physics.

A novel nonperturbative renormalization scheme for local operators

The gradient flow exponentially suppresses ultraviolet field fluctuations and removes ultraviolet divergences (up to a multiplicative fermionic wavefunction renormalization). It can be used to describe real-space Wilsonian renormalization group transformations and determine the corresponding beta function. We propose a new nonperturbative renormalization scheme for local composite fermionic operators that uses the gradient flow and is amenable to lattice QCD calculations. We present preliminary nonperturbative results for the running of quark bilinear operators in this scheme and outline the calculation of perturbative matching to the MS-bar scheme.

Gradient flow step-scaling function for SU(3) with $N_f$ = 6 or 4 fundamental flavors

Nonperturbative determinations of the renormalization group (RG) $β$ function are crucial to understand properties of gauge-fermion systems at strong coupling and connect lattice simulations and the perturbative ultraviolet regime. Choosing well-understood, QCD-like systems with SU(3) gauge group and either six or four fundamental flavors, we investigate their step-scaling $β$ function. In both cases we push the simulations to the boundary of chiral symmetry breaking and study the regime $g^2_{GF} \lesssim 8.2$ with six, and $g^2_{GF} \lesssim 6.6$ with four flavors. We carefully consider the lattice discretization errors by comparing three different gradient flows (GF), and for each flow three operators to estimate the renormalized finite volume coupling. We also consider the tree level improvement of the coupling. Noteworthy outcome is that nonperturbatively determined $β$ functions run much slower than perturbatively predicted.

Semileptonic $D \rightarrow π\ell ν$, $D \rightarrow K \ell ν$ and $D_s \rightarrow K \ell ν$ decays with 2+1f domain wall fermions

We present the status of our project to calculate $D \to π\ell ν$, $D \to K \ell ν$ and $D_s \to K \ell ν$ semileptonic form factors using domain wall fermions for both heavy and light quarks. Our computations are performed using RBC/UKQCD's set of 2+1 flavour domain wall fermion and Iwasaki gauge field ensembles. We plan to calculate three-point functions covering the full, physically allowed kinematic range. Given that the signal decays faster than the noise, unambiguously and reliably extracting the ground state is critical for success. We include an analysis of operator diagonalisation within several possible $2 \times 2$ operator bases and find an admixture of gauged fixed wall and $\mathbb{Z} \left( 2 \right)$ wall sources to be acceptable at both zero and non-zero momentum. Initial results for semileptonic form factors are presented for first ensembles.

Near-conformal dynamics in a chirally broken system

Composite Higgs models must exhibit very different dynamics from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) regardless whether they describe the Higgs boson as a dilatonlike state or a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. Large separation of scales and large anomalous dimensions are frequently desired by phenomenological models. Mass-split systems are well-suited for composite Higgs models because they are governed by a conformal fixed point in the ultraviolet but are chirally broken in the infrared. In this work we use lattice field theory calculations with domain wall fermions to investigate a system with four light and six heavy flavors. We demonstrate how a nearby conformal fixed point affects the properties of the four light flavors that exhibit chiral symmetry breaking in the infrared. Specifically we describe hyperscaling of dimensionful physical quantities and determine the corresponding anomalous mass dimension. We obtain $y_m=1+γ^*= 1.47(5)$ suggesting that $N_f=10$ lies inside the conformal window. Comparing the low energy spectrum to predictions of dilaton chiral perturbation theory, we observe excellent agreement which supports the expectation that the 4+6 mass-split system exhibits near-conformal dynamics with a relatively light $0^{++}$ isosinglet scalar.

Continuous renormalization group $β$ function from lattice simulations

We present a real-space renormalization group transformation with continuous scale change to calculate the continuous renormalization group $β$ function in non-perturbative lattice simulations. Our method is motivated by the connection between Wilsonian renormalization group and the gradient flow transformation. It does not rely on the perturbative definition of the renormalized coupling and is also valid at non-perturbative fixed points. Although our method requires an additional extrapolation compared to traditional step scaling calculations, it has several advantages which compensates for this extra step even when applied in the vicinity of the perturbative fixed point. We illustrate our approach by calculating the $β$ function of 2-flavor QCD and show that lattice predictions from individual lattice ensembles, even without the required continuum and finite volume extrapolations, can be very close to the result of the full analysis. Thus our method provides a non-perturbative framework and intuitive understanding into the structure of strongly coupled systems, in addition to being complementary to existing lattice determinations.

Dislocations under gradient flow and their effect on the renormalized coupling

Non-zero topological charge is prohibited in the chiral limit of gauge-fermion systems because any instanton would create a zero mode of the Dirac operator. On the lattice, however, the geometric $Q_\text{geom}=\langle F{\tilde F}\rangle /32π^2$ definition of the topological charge does not necessarily vanish even when the gauge fields are smoothed for example with gradient flow. Small vacuum fluctuations (dislocations) not seen by the fermions may be promoted to instanton-like objects by the gradient flow. We demonstrate that these artifacts of the flow cause the gradient flow renormalized gauge coupling to increase and run faster. In step-scaling studies such artifacts contribute a term which increases with volume. The usual $a/L\to 0$ continuum limit extrapolations can hence lead to incorrect results. In this paper we investigate these topological lattice artifacts in the SU(3) 10-flavor system with domain wall fermions and the 8-flavor system with staggered fermions. Both systems exhibit nonzero topological charge at the strong coupling, especially when using Symanzik gradient flow. We demonstrate how this artifact impacts the determination of the renormalized gauge coupling and the step-scaling $β$ function.

Gradient flow step-scaling function for SU(3) with ten fundamental flavors

We calculate the step scaling function, the lattice analog of the renormalization group $β$-function, for an SU(3) gauge theory with ten fundamental flavors. We present a detailed analysis including the study of systematic effects of our extensive data set generated with ten dynamical flavors using the Symanzik gauge action and three times stout smeared Möbius domain wall fermions. Using up to $32^4$ volumes, we calculate renormalized couplings for different gradient flow schemes and determine the step-scaling $β$ function for a scale change $s=2$ on up to five different lattice volume pairs. In an accompanying paper we discuss that gradient flow can promote lattice dislocations to instanton-like objects, introducing nonperturbative lattice artifacts to the step scaling function. Motivated by the observation that Wilson flow sufficiently suppresses these artifacts, we choose Wilson flow with the Symanzik operator as our preferred analysis. We study systematic effects by calculating the step-scaling function based on alternative flows (Zeuthen or Symanzik), alternative operators (Wilson plaquette, clover), and also explore the effects of the perturbative tree-level improvement. Further we investigate the effects due to the finite value of $L_s$.

Lattice QCD (focus on Charm and Beauty form factors, $R(D^*)$, $b$- & $c$-quark masses)

We present an overview of state of the art lattice quantum chromodynamcis calculations for heavy-light quantities. Special focus is given to the calculation of form factors for semi-leptonic decays of $B_{(s)}$ and $D$ mesons, the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ as well as the determination of $R(D^{(*)})$ testing the universality of lepton flavors in $b\to c$ transitions. In addition we report on the determination of $b$ and $c$ quark masses as well as on neutral $B_{(s)}$ meson mixing. Recent results are summarized and new developments highlighted.

SU(3)-breaking ratios for $D_{(s)}$ and $B_{(s)}$ mesons

We present results for the $SU(3)$ breaking ratios of decay constants $f_{D_s}/f_D$ and $f_{B_s}/f_B$ and - for the first time with physical pion masses - the ratio of bag parameters $B_{B_s}/B_{B_d}$, as well as the ratio $ξ$, forming the ratio of the nonpeturbative contributions to neutral $B_{(s)}$ meson mixing. Our results are based on Lattice QCD simulations with chirally symmetric 2+1 dynamical flavors of domain wall fermions. Eight ensembles at three different lattice spacing in the range $a = 0.11 - 0.07\,\mathrm{fm}$ enter the analysis two of which feature physical light quark masses. Multiple heavy quark masses are simulated ranging from below the charm quark mass to half the bottom quark mass. The $SU(3)$ breaking ratios display a very benign heavy mass behaviour allowing for extrapolation to the physical bottom quark mass. The results in the continuum limit including all sources of systematic errors are $f_{D_s}/f_D = 1.1740(51)_\mathrm{stat}(^{+68}_{-68})_\mathrm{sys}$, $f_{B_s}/f_B = 1.1949(60)_\mathrm{stat}(^{+\hphantom{0}95}_{-175})_\mathrm{sys}$, $B_{B_s}/B_{B_d} = 0.9984(45)_\mathrm{stat}(^{+80}_{-63})_\mathrm{sys}$ and $ξ= 1.1939(67)_\mathrm{stat}(^{+\hphantom{0}95}_{-177})_\mathrm{sys}$. Combining these with experimentally measured values we extract the ratios of CKM matrix elements $|V_{cd}/V_{cs}| = 0.2164(57)_\mathrm{exp}(^{+12}_{-12})_\mathrm{lat}$ and $|V_{td}/V_{ts}| = 0.20329(41)_\mathrm{exp}(^{+162}_{-301})_\mathrm{lat}$.

Charm Physics with Domain Wall Fermions and Physical Pion Masses

We present RBC/UKQCD's charm project using $N_f=2+1$ flavour ensembles with inverse lattice spacings in the range $1.73-2.77\,\mathrm{GeV}$ and two physical pion mass ensembles. Domain wall fermions are used for the light as well as the charm quarks. We discuss our strategy for the extraction of the decay constants $f_D$ and $f_{D_s}$ and their extrapolation to the continuum limit, physical pion masses and the physical heavy quark mass. Our preliminary results are $f_D=208.7(2.8)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ and $f_{D_s}=246.4(1.9)\,\mathrm{MeV}$ where the quoted error is statistical only. We outline our current approach to extend the reach in the heavy quark mass and present preliminary results.

Form factors for semi-leptonic $B$ decays

Semi-leptonic $B$ decays provide promising channels to test the Standard Model, search for signs of new physics, or determine fundamental parameters like CKM matrix elements. We present an update on our calculation of short distance contributions to GIM suppressed rare $B$ decays focusing in particular on $B_s\to ϕ\ell^+ \ell^-$ decays. Furthermore we show first results for our calculation of $B_{(s)}\to D_{(s)}^{(*)}\ellν$ semi-leptonic decays involving $b\to c$ transitions. Our calculations are based on RBC-UKQCD's 2+1 flavor domain-wall fermion and Iwasaki gauge field configurations featuring three lattice spacings in the range $1.73$ GeV $\le a^{-1} \le 2.77$ GeV and pion masses down to the physical value. We calculate the form factors by simulating $b$-quarks using the relativistic heavy quark action, create light $u/d$ and $s$ quarks with standard domain-wall kernel, and use optimised Möbius domain-wall fermions for charm quarks.

Infrared properties of a prototype model for beyond-Standard Model physics

We construct a prototype BSM model based on the SU(3) color gauge group and a combination of 4 light (massless) and 8 heavy flavors. In the infrared, the SU(4) flavor chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, while in the ultraviolet this model exhibits the properties of the $N_f=12$ conformal fixed point. Renormalization group considerations predict the spectrum of such a system to show hyperscaling, i.e. dimensionless ratios of hadron masses or decay constants are independent of the heavy mass. Hyperscaling is present for bound states of light, heavy, or a combination of heavy and light flavors and leads to a strongly predictive model. Despite chiral symmetry breaking, this system features a spectrum exhibiting a very non-QCD like behavior. Furthermore, the gauge coupling becomes an irrelevant parameter. We support these expectations by presenting numerical results based on four different values of the heavy quark mass $am_h$, up to six different values of the light quark mass $am_\ell$, and include, for the first time, preliminary data at a second value of the gauge coupling $β$. Our model can be embedded in scenarios describing the Higgs boson either as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson or a dilaton-like particle.

Non-perturbative determinations of $B$-meson decay constants and semi-leptonic form factors

$B$-physics is one of the most promising windows to find new physics in the flavor sector. One key ingredient to these searches are precise theoretical predictions derived from the Standard Model. Focusing at the nonperturbative QCD contributions, we carry out lattice QCD simulations in order to calculate $B$-meson decay constants and semi-leptonic form factors. Combined with experimental measurements our results enable us to determine CKM matrix elements. Here we present $B$ and $B_s$ meson decay constants as well as semi-leptonic form factors including rare decays, CKM or GIM suppressed in the Standard Model. Our results are based on the set of 2+1 flavor domain-wall Iwasaki gauge field configurations generated by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration. Heavy $b$-quarks are simulated using the relativistic heavy quark action.

Strongly interacting dynamics and the search for new physics at the LHC

We present results for the spectrum of a strongly interacting SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f = 8$ light fermions in the fundamental representation. Carrying out non-perturbative lattice calculations at the lightest masses and largest volumes considered to date, we confirm the existence of a remarkably light singlet scalar particle. We explore the rich resonance spectrum of the 8-flavor theory in the context of the search for new physics beyond the standard model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Connecting our results to models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking, we estimate the vector resonance mass to be about 2 TeV with a width of roughly 450 GeV, and predict additional resonances with masses below ~3 TeV.

B-meson decay constants from 2+1-flavor lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and relativistic heavy quarks

We calculate the B-meson decay constants f_B, f_Bs, and their ratio in unquenched lattice QCD using domain-wall light quarks and relativistic b-quarks. We use gauge-field ensembles generated by the RBC and UKQCD collaborations using the domain-wall fermion action and Iwasaki gauge action with three flavors of light dynamical quarks. We analyze data at two lattice spacings of a ~ 0.11, 0.086 fm with unitary pion masses as light as M_pi ~ 290 MeV; this enables us to control the extrapolation to the physical light-quark masses and continuum. For the b-quarks we use the anisotropic clover action with the relativistic heavy-quark interpretation, such that discretization errors from the heavy-quark action are of the same size as from the light-quark sector. We renormalize the lattice heavy-light axial-vector current using a mostly nonperturbative method in which we compute the bulk of the matching factor nonperturbatively, with a small correction, that is close to unity, in lattice perturbation theory. We also improve the lattice heavy-light current through O(alpha_s a). We extrapolate our results to the physical light-quark masses and continuum using SU(2) heavy-meson chiral perturbation theory, and provide a complete systematic error budget. We obtain f_B0 = 199.5(12.6) MeV, f_B+ = 195.6(14.9) MeV, f_Bs = 235.4(12.2) MeV, f_Bs/f_B0 = 1.197(50), and f_Bs/f_B+ = 1.223(71), where the errors are statistical and total systematic added in quadrature. These results are in good agreement with other published results and provide an important independent cross check of other three-flavor determinations of $B$-meson decay constants using staggered light quarks.

Direct Detection of Stealth Dark Matter through Electromagnetic Polarizability

We calculate the spin-independent scattering cross section for direct detection that results from the electromagnetic polarizability of a composite scalar baryon dark matter candidate -- "Stealth Dark Matter", that is based on a dark SU(4) confining gauge theory. In the nonrelativistic limit, electromagnetic polarizability proceeds through a dimension-7 interaction leading to a very small scattering cross section for dark matter with weak scale masses. This represents a lower bound on the scattering cross section for composite dark matter theories with electromagnetically charged constituents. We carry out lattice calculations of the polarizability for the lightest baryons in SU(3) and SU(4) gauge theories using the background field method on quenched configurations. We find the polarizabilities of SU(3) and SU(4) to be comparable (within about 50%) normalized to the baryon mass, which is suggestive for extensions to larger SU(N) groups. The resulting scattering cross sections with a xenon target are shown to be potentially detectable in the dark matter mass range of about 200-700 GeV, where the lower bound is from the existing LUX constraint while the upper bound is the coherent neutrino background. Significant uncertainties in the cross section remain due to the more complicated interaction of the polarizablity operator with nuclear structure, however the steep dependence on the dark matter mass, $1/m_B^6$, suggests the observable dark matter mass range is not appreciably modified. We briefly highlight collider searches for the mesons in the theory as well as the indirect astrophysical effects that may also provide excellent probes of stealth dark matter.

Stealth Dark Matter: Dark scalar baryons through the Higgs portal

We present a new model of "Stealth Dark Matter": a composite baryonic scalar of an $SU(N_D)$ strongly-coupled theory with even $N_D \geq 4$. All mass scales are technically natural, and dark matter stability is automatic without imposing an additional discrete or global symmetry. Constituent fermions transform in vector-like representations of the electroweak group that permit both electroweak-breaking and electroweak-preserving mass terms. This gives a tunable coupling of stealth dark matter to the Higgs boson independent of the dark matter mass itself. We specialize to $SU(4)$, and investigate the constraints on the model from dark meson decay, electroweak precision measurements, basic collider limits, and spin-independent direct detection scattering through Higgs exchange. We exploit our earlier lattice simulations that determined the composite spectrum as well as the effective Higgs coupling of stealth dark matter in order to place bounds from direct detection, excluding constituent fermions with dominantly electroweak-breaking masses. A lower bound on the dark baryon mass $m_B \gtrsim 300$ GeV is obtained from the indirect requirement that the lightest dark meson not be observable at LEP II. We briefly survey some intriguing properties of stealth dark matter that are worthy of future study, including: collider studies of dark meson production and decay; indirect detection signals from annihilation; relic abundance estimates for both symmetric and asymmetric mechanisms; and direct detection through electromagnetic polarizability, a detailed study of which will appear in a companion paper.

A novel approach to the study of conformality in the SU(3) theory with multiple flavors

We investigate the transition between spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and conformal behavior in the SU(3) theory with multiple fermion flavors. We propose a new strategy for studying this transition. Instead of changing the number of flavors, we lift the mass of a subset of the fermions, keeping the rest of the fermions near to the massless chiral limit in order to probe the transition. Dedicated to the 60th birthday of Academician Valery Rubakov.

Composite bosonic baryon dark matter on the lattice: SU(4) baryon spectrum and the effective Higgs interaction

We present the spectrum of baryons in a new SU(4) gauge theory with fundamental fermion constituents. The spectrum of these bosonic baryons is of significant interest for composite dark matter theories. Here, we compare the spectrum and properties of SU(3) and SU(4) baryons, and then compute the dark-matter direct detection cross section via Higgs boson exchange for TeV-scale composite dark matter arising from a confining SU(4) gauge sector. Comparison with the latest LUX results leads to tight bounds on the fraction of the constituent-fermion mass that may arise from electroweak symmetry breaking. Lattice calculations of the dark matter mass spectrum and the Higgs-dark matter coupling are performed on quenched $16^{3} \times 32$, $32^{3} \times 64$, $48^{3} \times 96$, and $64^{3} \times128$ lattices with three different lattice spacings, using Wilson fermions with moderate to heavy pseudoscalar meson masses. Our results lay a foundation for future analytic and numerical study of composite baryonic dark matter.

Targeting the conformal window with 4+8 flavors

We study the transition between spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and conformal behavior in the SU(3) theory with multiple fermion flavors. Instead of the traditional approach of changing the number of flavors, we keep the number of fermions fixed but lift the mass of a subset, keeping the remaining fermions near to the massless chiral limit. This way we can interpolate continuously between the conformal and chirally broken dynamics. In particular, we consider four light and eight heavy flavors and investigate the running/walking gauge coupling and the low energy meson spectrum, including the 0++ iso-singlet scalar state in this system. Our preliminary data reveal an iso-singlet scalar that is considerably lighter than the pion at large fermion mass but becomes heavier at smaller masses. This behavior is of particular phenomenological interest.

Targeting the Conformal Window: Scalars on the Lattice

The light Higgs boson of the Standard Model could arise as the consequence of the weakly broken conformal symmetry in a strongly interacting gauge theory. Here we present a novel idea to study the transition from conformal to confining behavior using an SU(3) gauge theory with four light and eight heavy flavors. This system interpolates between the 12-flavor conformal and the 4 flavor chirally broken theory as the mass of the heavy flavors are varied. We show first results on our determination of the iso-singlet 0++ state.

Nonperturbative tuning of an improved relativistic heavy-quark action with application to bottom spectroscopy

We calculate the masses of bottom mesons using an improved relativistic action for the b-quarks and the RBC/UKQCD Iwasaki gauge configurations with 2+1 flavors of dynamical domain-wall light quarks. We analyze configurations with two lattice spacings: a^{-1} = 1.729 GeV (a ~ 0.11 fm) and a^{-1} = 2.281 GeV (a ~ 0.086 fm). We use an anisotropic, clover-improved Wilson action for the b-quark, and tune the three parameters of the action nonperturbatively such that they reproduce the experimental values of the B_s and B_s* heavy-light meson states. The masses and mass-splittings of the low-lying bottomonium states (such as the eta_b and Upsilon) can then be computed with no additional inputs, and comparison between these predictions and experiment provides a test of the validity of our method. We obtain bottomonium masses with total uncertainties of ~0.5-0.6% and fine-structure splittings with uncertainties of ~35-45%; for all cases we find good agreement with experiment. The parameters of the relativistic heavy-quark action tuned for b-quarks presented in this work can be used for precise calculations of weak matrix elements such as B-meson decay constants and mixing parameters with lattice discretization errors that are of the same size as in light pseudoscalar meson quantities. This general method can also be used for charmed meson masses and matrix elements if the parameters of the heavy-quark action are appropriately tuned.

Neutral B-meson mixing from unquenched lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and static b-quarks

We demonstrate a method for calculating the neutral B-meson decay constants and mixing matrix elements in unquenched lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and static b-quarks. Our computation is performed on the "2+1" flavor gauge configurations generated by the RBC and UKQCD Collaborations with a lattice spacing of a approx 0.11 fm (a^-1 = 1.729 GeV) and a lattice spatial volume of approximately (1.8 fm)^3. We simulate at three different light sea quark masses with pion masses down to approximately 430 MeV, and extrapolate to the physical quark masses using a phenomenologically-motivated fit function based on next-to-leading order heavy-light meson SU(2) chiral perturbation theory. For the b-quarks, we use an improved formulation of the Eichten-Hill action with static link-smearing to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. We also improve the heavy-light axial current used to compute the B-meson decay constant to O(alpha_s p a) using one-loop lattice perturbation theory. We present initial results for the SU(3)-breaking ratios f_{B_s}/f_{B_d} and xi = f_{B_s} sqrt{B_{B_s}}/f_{B_d} sqrt{B_{B_d}}, thereby demonstrating the viability of the method. For the ratio of decay constants, we find f_{B_s}/f_{B_d} = 1.15(12) and for the ratio of mixing matrix elements, we find xi = 1.13(12), where in both cases the errors reflect the combined statistical and systematic uncertainties, including an estimate of the size of neglected O(1/m_b) effects.

Neutral B-meson mixing from dynamical lattice QCD with chiral light quarks and static b-quarks

In the limit of infinitely heavy b-quarks we compute the SU(3)-breaking ratio xi of neutral B-meson mixing matrix elements. We also present results for the ratio of decay constants f_{B_s}/f_{B_d}. Our calculation employs chirality-preserving domain-wall fermions for the light quarks, a static action with link-smearing for the b-quarks, and the Iwasaki gauge action. Here we report on our results from the 16^3 x 32 x 16 ensemble (a^-1 = 1.729(28) GeV) which we use to verify our method. We improve upon our earlier work by including O(alpha_s pa) matching for the computation of the decay constants and extrapolating to the physical point using chiral perturbation theory.
