Generalization of the algebraic method of group classification with application to nonlinear wave and elliptic equations

Enhancing and essentially generalizing previous results on a class of (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear wave and elliptic equations, we apply several new techniques to classify admissible point transformations within this class up to the equivalence generated by its equivalence group. This gives an exhaustive description of its equivalence groupoid. After extending the algebraic method of group classification to non-normalized classes of differential equations, we solve the complete group classification problem for the class under study up to both usual and general point equivalences. The solution includes the complete preliminary group classification of the class and the construction of singular Lie-symmetry extensions, which are not related to subalgebras of the equivalence algebra. The complete preliminary group classification is based on classifying appropriate subalgebras of the entire infinite-dimensional equivalence algebra whose projections are qualified as maximal extensions of the kernel invariance algebra. The results obtained can be used to construct exact solutions of nonlinear wave and elliptic equations.

Group classification and exact solutions of variable-coefficient generalized Burgers equations with linear damping

Admissible point transformations between Burgers equations with linear damping and time-dependent coefficients are described and used in order to exhaustively classify Lie symmetries of these equations. Optimal systems of one- and two-dimensional subalgebras of the Lie invariance algebras obtained are constructed. The corresponding Lie reductions to ODEs and to algebraic equations are carried out. Exact solutions to particular equations are found. Some generalized Burgers equations are linearized to the heat equation by composing equivalence transformations with the Hopf-Cole transformation.

Equivalence transformations in the study of integrability

We discuss how point transformations can be used for the study of integrability, in particular, for deriving classes of integrable variable-coefficient differential equations. The procedure of finding the equivalence groupoid of a class of differential equations is described and then specified for the case of evolution equations. A class of fifth-order variable-coefficient KdV-like equations is studied within the framework suggested.

More common errors in finding exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations. I

In the recent paper by Kudryashov [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simulat., 2009, V.14, 3507-3529] seven common errors in finding exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations were listed and discussed in detail. We indicate two more common errors concerning the similarity (equivalence with respect to point transformations) and linearizability of differential equations and then discuss the first of them. Classes of generalized KdV and mKdV equations with variable coefficients are used in order to clarify our conclusions. We investigate admissible point transformations in classes of generalized KdV equations, obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions of similarity of such equations to the standard KdV and mKdV equations and carried out the exhaustive group classification of a class of variable-coefficient KdV equations. Then a number of recent papers on such equations are commented using the above results. It is shown that exact solutions were constructed in these papers only for equations which are reduced by point transformations to the standard KdV and mKdV equations. Therefore, exact solutions of such equations can be obtained from known solutions of the standard KdV and mKdV equations in an easier way than by direct solving. The same statement is true for other equations which are equivalent to well-known equations with respect to point transformations.
