The analytic structure of the fixed charge expansion

We investigate the analytic properties of the fixed charge expansion for a number of conformal field theories in different space-time dimensions. The models investigated here are $O(N)$ and $QED_3$. We show that in $d=3-ε$ dimensions the contribution to the $O(N)$ fixed charge $Q$ conformal dimensions obtained in the double scaling limit of large charge and vanishing $ε$ is non-Borel summable, doubly factorial divergent, and with order $\sqrt{Q}$ optimal truncation order. By using resurgence techniques we show that the singularities in the Borel plane are related to worldline instantons that were discovered in the other double scaling limit of large $Q$ and $N$ of Ref. [1]. In $d=4-ε$ dimensions the story changes since in the same large $Q$ and small $ε$ regime the next order corrections to the scaling dimensions lead to a convergent series. The resummed series displays a new branch cut singularity which is relevant for the stability of the $O(N)$ large charge sector for negative $ε$. Although the $QED_3$ model shares the same large charge behaviour of the $O(N)$ model, we discover that at leading order in the large number of matter field expansion the large charge scaling dimensions are Borel summable, single factorial divergent, and with order $Q$ optimal truncation order.

More on the Weak Gravity Conjecture via Convexity of Charged Operators

The Weak Gravity Conjecture has recently been re-formulated in terms of a particle with non-negative self-binding energy. Because of the dual conformal field theory (CFT) formulation in the anti-de Sitter space the conformal dimension $Δ(Q)$ of the lowest-dimension operator with charge Q under some global U(1) symmetry must be a convex function of Q. This property has been conjectured to hold for any (unitary) conformal field theory and generalized to larger global symmetry groups. Here we refine and further test the convex charge conjecture via semiclassical computations for fixed charge sectors of different theories in different dimensions. We analyze the convexity properties of the leading and next-to-leading order terms stemming from the semiclassical computation, de facto, extending previous tests beyond the leading perturbative contributions and to arbitrary charges. In particular, the leading contribution is sufficient to test convexity in the semiclassical computations. We also consider intriguing cases in which the models feature a transition from real to complex conformal dimensions either as a function of the charge or number of matter fields. As a relevant example of the first kind, we investigate the $O(N)$ model in $4+ε$ dimensions. As an example of the second type we consider the $U(N)\times U(M)$ model in $4-ε$ dimensions. Both models display a rich dynamics where, by changing the number of matter fields and/or charge, one can achieve dramatically different physical regimes. We discover that whenever a complex conformal dimension appears, the real part satisfies the convexity property.

Charging the Walking U(N)$\times$U(N) Higgs Theory as a Complex CFT

We apply a semi-classical method to compute the conformal field theory (CFT) data for the U(N)xU(N) non-abelian Higgs theory in four minus epsilon dimensions at its complex fixed point. The theory features more than one coupling and walking dynamics. Given our charge configuration, we identify a family of corresponding operators and compute their scaling dimensions which remarkably agree with available results from conventional perturbation theory validating the use of the state-operator correspondence for a complex CFT.

A natural Coleman-Weinberg theory explains the diphoton excess

It is possible to delay the hierarchy problem, by replacing the standard Higgs-sector by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, and at the same time ensure perturbative naturalness through the so-called Veltman conditions. As we showed in a previous study, minimal models of this type require the introduction of an extra singlet scalar further coupled to new fermions. In this constrained setup the Higgs mass was close to the observed value and the new scalar mass was below a TeV scale. Here we first extend the previous analysis by taking into account the important difference between running mass and pole mass of the scalar states. We then investigate whether these theories can account for the 750 GeV excess in diphotons observed by the LHC collaborations. New QCD-colored fermions in the TeV mass range coupled to the new scalar state are needed to describe the excess. We further show, by explicit computation of the running of the couplings, that the model is under perturbative control till just above the masses of the heaviest states of the theory. We further suggest related testable signatures and thereby show that the LHC experiments can test these models.

Accidental Composite Dark Matter

We build models where Dark Matter candidates arise as composite states of a new confining gauge force, stable thanks to accidental symmetries. Restricting to renormalizable theories compatible with SU(5) unification, we find 13 models based on SU(N) gauge theories and 9 based on SO(N). We also describe other models that require non-renormalizable interactions. The two gauge groups lead to distinctive phenomenologies: SU(N) theories give complex DM, with potentially observable electric and magnetic dipole moments that lead to peculiar spin-independent cross sections; SO(N) theories give real DM, with challenging spin-dependent cross sections or inelastic scatterings. Models with Yukawa couplings also give rise to spin-independent direct detection mediated by the Higgs boson and to electric dipole moments for the electron. In some models DM has higher spin. Each model predicts a specific set of lighter composite scalars, possibly observable at colliders.

Dynamical generation of the weak and Dark Matter scales from strong interactions

Assuming that mass scales arise in nature only via dimensional transmutation, we extend the dimension-less Standard Model by adding vector-like fermions charged under a new strong gauge interaction. Their non-perturbative dynamics generates a mass scale that is transmitted to the elementary Higgs boson by electro-weak gauge interactions. In its minimal version the model has the same number of parameters as the Standard Model, predicts that the electro-weak symmetry gets broken, predicts new-physics in the multi-TeV region and is compatible with all existing bounds, provides two Dark Matter candidates stable thanks to accidental symmetries: a composite scalar in the adjoint of SU(2)_L and a composite singlet fermion; their thermal relic abundance is predicted to be comparable to the measured cosmological DM abundance. Some models of this type allow for extra Yukawa couplings; DM candidates remain even if explicit masses are added.

Higgs Critical Exponents and Conformal Bootstrap in Four Dimensions

We investigate relevant properties of composite operators emerging in nonsupersymmetric, four-dimensional gauge-Yukawa theories with interacting conformal fixed points within a precise framework. The theories investigated in this work are structurally similar to the standard model of particle interactions, but differ by developing perturbative interacting fixed points. We investigate the physical properties of the singlet and the adjoint composite operators quadratic in the Higgs field, and discover that the singlet anomalous dimension is substantially larger than the adjoint one. The numerical bootstrap results are then compared to precise four dimensional conformal field theoretical results. To accomplish this, it was necessary to calculate explicitly the crossing symmetry relations for the global symmetry group SU($N$)$\times$SU($N$).

Conformal Extensions of the Standard Model with Veltman Conditions

Using the renormalisation group framework we classify different extensions of the standard model according to their degree of naturality. A new relevant class of perturbative models involving elementary scalars is the one in which the theory simultaneously satisfies the Veltman conditions and is conformal at the classical level. We term these extensions perturbative natural conformal (PNC) theories. We show that PNC models are very constrained and thus highly predictive. Among the several PNC examples that we exhibit, we discover a remarkably simple PNC extension of the standard model in which the Higgs is predicted to have the experimental value of the mass equal to 126 GeV. This model also predicts the existence of one more standard model singlet scalar boson with a mass of 541 GeV and the Higgs self-coupling to emerge radiatively. We study several other PNC examples that generally predict a somewhat smaller mass of the Higgs to the perturbative order we have investigated them. Our results can be a useful guide when building extensions of the standard model featuring fundamental scalars.

Muon Magnetic Moment and the Goldstone Boson Higgs

We compute the correction to the muon magnetic moment in theories where the Higgs is a pseudo-Goldstone boson and leptons are partially composite. Using a general effective lagrangian we show that in some regions of parameters a sizable new physics contribution to the magnetic moment can be obtained from composite fermions that could explain the 3.5$σ$ experimental discrepancy from the Standard Model prediction. This effect depends on the derivative interactions of the Higgs that do not modify the coupling of the Higgs to leptons and it does not require extremely light fermions, allowing to easily avoid LHC bounds. Our derivations can be in general applied to dipole operators in theories with Goldstone boson Higgs.

Stable Extensions with(out) Gravity

We investigate the vacuum stability as well as the gravitational corrections in extensions of the Standard Model featuring a new complex scalar, and two Dirac fermions for different choices of the hypercharge of the scalar and one of the two fermions. The neutral fermion acquires loop-induced magnetic interactions with the Standard Model and could be identified with a dark matter candidate. To the lowest order in perturbation theory we show that these extensions can save the electroweak vacuum from being metastable. We then add the gravitational corrections to the different beta functions and discover that the models can be compatible with the asymptotically safe gravity scenario at the price of a heavier Higgs and lighter top mass.

Jumping Out of the Light-Higgs Conformal Window

We investigate generic properties of the conformal phase transition in gauge theories featuring Higgs-like fundamental particles. These theories provide an excellent arena to properly investigate conformal dynamics and discover novel features. We show that the phase transition at the boundary of the Higgs conformal window is not smooth but a jumping one for the known perturbative examples. In addition the general conditions under which the transition is either jumping or smooth are provided. Jumping implies that the massive spectrum of the theory will jump at the phase transition. It, however, still allows for one of the states, the would be dilaton of the theory, to be lighter than the heaviest states in the broken phase. Finally we exhibit a calculable Higgs model in which we can, in perturbation theory, determine the Higgs conformal window, the spectrum in the conformally broken phase and demonstrate it to possess a jumping type conformal phase transition.

Standard Model Vacuum Stability and Weyl Consistency Conditions

At high energy the standard model possesses conformal symmetry at the classical level. This is reflected at the quantum level by relations between the different beta functions of the model. These relations are known as the Weyl consistency conditions. We show that it is possible to satisfy them order by order in perturbation theory, provided that a suitable coupling constant counting scheme is used. As a direct phenomenological application, we study the stability of the standard model vacuum at high energies and compare with previous computations violating the Weyl consistency conditions.

Standard Model-like corrections to Dilatonic Dynamics

We examine the effects of standard model-like interactions on the near-conformal dynamics of a theory featuring a dilatonic state identified with the standard model-like Higgs. As template for near-conformal dynamics we use a gauge theory with fermionic matter and elementary mesons possessing the same non-abelian global symmetries as a technicolor-like theory with matter in a complex representation of the gauge group. We then embed the electroweak gauge group within the global flavor structure and add also ordinary quark-like states to mimic the effects of the top. We find that the standard model-like induced corrections modify the original phase diagram and the details of the dilatonic spectrum. In particular, we show that the corrected theory exhibits near-conformal behavior for a smaller range of flavors and colors. For this range of values, however, our results suggest that near conformal dynamics could accommodate the observed Higgs-like properties.

The a theorem for Gauge-Yukawa theories beyond Banks-Zaks

We investigate the a theorem for nonsupersymmetric gauge-Yukawa theories beyond the leading order in perturbation theory. The exploration is first performed in a model-independent manner and then applied to a specific relevant example. Here, a rich fixed point structure appears including the presence of a merging phenomenon between non-trivial fixed points for which the a theorem has not been tested so far.

The Mirage of the Fermi Scale

The discovery of a light Higgs boson at LHC may be suggesting that we need to revise our model building paradigms to understand the origin of the weak scale. We explore the possibility that the Fermi scale is not fundamental but rather a derived one, i.e. a low energy mirage. We show that this scenario emerges in a very natural way in models previously used to break the electroweak symmetry dynamically and suggest a simple dynamical framework for this idea. In our model the electroweak scale results from the interplay between two very high energy scales, one typically of the order of $\Luv\sim 10^{10}$ GeV and the other around $M_{\rm U} \sim 10^{16}$ GeV, although other values are also possible.

Warped Extra Dimensional Benchmarks for Snowmass 2013

The framework of a warped extra dimension with the Standard Model (SM) fields propagating in it is a very well-motivated extension of the SM since it can address both the Planck-weak and flavor hierarchy problems of the SM. We consider signals at the 14 and 33 TeV large hadron collider (LHC) resulting from the direct production of the new particles in this framework, i.e.,Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the SM particles. We focus on spin-1 (gauge boson) and spin-2 (graviton) KK particles and their decays to top/bottom quarks (flavor-conserving) and W/Z and Higgs bosons, in particular. We propose two benchmarks for this purpose, with the right-handed (RH) or LH top quark, respectively, being localized very close to the TeV end of the extra dimension. We present some new results at the 14 TeV (with 300 fb$^-1$ and 3000 fb$^-1$) and 33 TeV LHC. We find that the prospects for discovery of these particles are quite promising, especially at the high-luminosity upgrade.

Light Dilaton at Fixed Points and Ultra Light Scale Super Yang Mills

We investigate the infrared dynamics of a nonsupersymmetric SU(X) gauge theory featuring an adjoint fermion, Nf Dirac flavors and an Higgs-like complex Nf x Nf scalar which is a gauge singlet. We first establish the existence of an infrared stable perturbative fixed point and then investigate the spectrum near this point. We demonstrate that this theory naturally features a light scalar degree of freedom to be identified with the dilaton and elucidate its physical properties. We compute the spectrum and demonstrate that at low energy the nonperturbative part of the spectrum of the theory is the one of pure supersymmetric Yang-Mills. We can therefore determine the exact nonperturbative fermion condensate and deduce relevant properties of the nonperturbative spectrum of the theory. We also show that the intrinsic scale of super Yang-Mills is exponentially smaller than the scale associated to the breaking of conformal and chiral symmetry of the theory.

Magnetic Fixed Points and Emergent Supersymmetry

We establish the existence of fixed points for certain gauge theories candidate to be magnetic duals of QCD with one adjoint Weyl fermion. In the perturbative regime of the magnetic theory the existence of a very large number of fixed points is unveiled. We classify them by analyzing their basin of attraction. The existence of several nonsupersymmetric fixed points for the magnetic gauge theory lends further support towards the existence of gauge-gauge duality beyond supersymmetry. We also discover that among these very many fixed points there are supersymmetric ones emerging from a generic nonsupersymmetric renormalization group flow. We therefore conclude that supersymmetry naturally emerges as a fixed point theory from a nonsupersymmetric Lagrangian without the need for fine-tuning of the bare couplings. Our results suggest that supersymmetry can be viewed as an emergent phenomenon in field theory. In particular there should be no need for fine-tuning the bare couplings when performing Lattice simulations aimed to investigate supersymmetry on the Lattice.

The Next Generation

We consider the possibility of non-sequential generation(s) of Standard Model -like matter as a consequence of cancellation of global and gauge anomalies due to a new strongly interacting sector responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking. We consider concrete models for the strong dynamics and outline several scenarios for the next generation. For these we provide analysis of the precision constraints as well as a discussion on collider signatures and implications for cosmology.

Constraints on Conformal Windows from Holographic Duals

We analyze a beta function with the analytic form of Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov result in the five dimensional gravity-dilaton environment. We show how dilaton inherits poles and fixed points of such beta function through the zeros and points of extremum in its potential. Super Yang-Mills and supersymmetric QCD are studied in detail and Seiberg's electric-magnetic duality in the dilaton potential is explicitly demonstrated. Non-supersymmetric proposals of similar functional form are tested and new insights into the conformal window as well as determinations of scheme-independent value of the anomalous dimension at the fixed point are presented.

Discriminating between technicolor and warped extra dimensional model via pp $\to$ ZZ channel

We explore the possibility to discriminate between certain strongly-coupled technicolor (TC) models and warped extra-dimensional models where the Standard Model fields are propagating in the extra dimension. We consider a generic QCD-like TC model with running coupling as well as two TC models with walking dynamics. We argue that due to the different production mechanisms for the lowest-lying composite tensor state in these TC theories compared to the first Kaluza-Klein graviton mode of warped extra-dimensional case, it is possible to distinguish between these models based on the angular analysis of the reconstructed longitudinal Z bosons in the $pp \to ZZ \to $ four charged leptons channel.

Resizing the Conformal Window: A beta function Ansatz

We propose an ansatz for the nonperturbative beta function of a generic non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with or without fermions in an arbitrary representation of the gauge group. While our construction is similar to the recently proposed Ryttov-Sannino all order beta function, the essential difference is that it allows for the existence of an unstable ultraviolet fixed point in addition to the predicted Bank-Zaks -like infrared stable fixed point. Our beta function preserves all of the tested features with respect to the non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. We predict the conformal window identifying the lower end of it as a merger of the infrared and ultraviolet fixed points.

Towards establishing the spin of warped gravitons

We study the possibility of experimental verification of the spin=2 nature of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton which is predicted to exist in the extra-dimensional Randal-Sundrum (RS) warped models. The couplings of these gravitons to the particles located on or near the TeV brane is the strongest as the overlap integral of their profiles in the extra-dimension is large. Among them are unphysical Higgses ($W^{\pm}_L$ and $Z_L$) and KK excitations of the Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons. We consider the possibility to confirm the spin-2 nature of the first KK mode of the warped graviton ($G_1$) based on the angular distribution of the Z bozon in the graviton rest frame in the gg$\to G_1 \to W^{KK} (Z^{KK}) W (Z)\to WWZ$, gg$\to G_1\to ZZ$ and gg$\to G_1 \to Z^{KK} Z\to ZZH$ decay channels. Using Wigner D-matrix properties, we derive the relationship between the graviton spin, signal angular distribution peak value, and other theoretically calculable quantities. We then study the LHC signals for these decay modes and find that with 1000 fb$^{-1}$ of data, spin of the RS graviton up to $\sim$ 2 TeV may be confirmed in the $pp \to W^{KK} (Z^{KK}) W (Z) \to WWZ \to$ 3 leptons + jet + $\slashed{E}_T$ and $pp \to ZZ \to$ 4 leptons decay modes.

Effective Quark Antiquark Potential in the Quark Gluon Plasma from Gravity Dual Models

We estimate the effective heavy quark and antiquark potential in the quark gluon plasma using the gravity dual theory. Two models are considered: $AdS_{5}$ and Sakai-Sugimoto model. The effective potential, obtained by using the rotating fundamental open-string configurations, has the angular momentum dependence which generalizes the static central potential. Motivated by the asymptotic form for zero angular momentum state, we fit the effective potential for $J=1,2$ states in the binding region. The fitting parameters are found to be functions of temperature. Finally, we discuss the differences and similarities of the effective potential between the two gravity dual models. An interesting result is that position of the minimum of potential is determined only by angular momentum and independent of the temperature.
