Tempering the mechanical response of FCC micro-pillars: an Eulerian plasticity approach

The mechanical response of almost pure single-crystal micro-pillars under compression exhibits a highly localized behavior that can endanger the structural stability of a sample. Recent experiments revealed that the mechanical response of a crystal is very sensitive to both the presence of a quenched disorder in the sample and the orientation of the crystal. In this work, we study the influence of disorder and crystal orientation on the large strain response of a 2D FCC crystal with three active glide planes using a very simple Eulerian plasticity model in the FE framework. Our numerical and theoretical results on clean crystal pillars suggest that a single plane or many gliding planes can be activated depending on the crystal orientation. While in the former case, the deformation is localized, leading to ductile rupture, in the latter, a complex interplay between active planes takes place, resulting in a more uniform deformation. The strain-localization can be avoided when inhomogeneities are engineered inside the crystal, or the crystal orientation is altered because of the activation of multiple slip systems, resulting in a "patchwork" of the distribution of the slip systems.

Volume changes during active shape fluctuations in cells

Cells modify their volume in response to changes in osmotic pressure but it is usually assumed that other active shape variations do not involve significant volume fluctuations. Here we report experiments demonstrating that water transport in and out of the cell is needed for the formation of blebs, commonly observed protrusions in the plasma membrane driven by cortex contraction. We develop and simulate a model of fluid mediated membrane-cortex deformations and show that a permeable membrane is necessary for bleb formation which is otherwise impaired. Taken together our experimental and theoretical results emphasize the subtle balance between hydrodynamics and elasticity in actively driven cell morphological changes.

The role of phase compatibility in martensite

Shape memory alloys inherit their macroscopic properties from their mesoscale microstructure originated from the martensitic phase transformation. In a cubic to orthorhombic transition, a single variant of marten- site can have a compatible (exact) interface with the austenite for some special lattice parameters in contrast to conventional austenite/twinned martensite interface with a transition layer. Experimentally, the phase compat- ibility results in a dramatic drop in thermal hysteresis and gives rise to very stable functional properties over cycling. Here, we investigate the microstructures observed in Ti50Ni50-xPdx alloys that undergo a cubic to orthorhombic martensitic transformation using a three dimensional phase field approach. We will show that the simulation results are in very good agreement with transmission electron microscopy observations. However, the understanding of the drop in thermal hysteresis requires the coupling of phase transformation with plastic activity. We will discuss this point within the framework of thermoelasticity, which is a generic feature of the martensitic transformation.
