A mean-field approach applied for the ferromagnetic spin-1 Blume-Capel model

We applied a mean-field approach associated to Monte Carlo simulations in order to study the spin-1 ferromagnetic Blume-Capel model in the square and the linear lattice. This new technique, which we call MFT-MC, determines the molecular field as the magnetization response of a Monte Carlo simulation. The resulting phase diagram is qualitatively correct, in contrast to effective-field approximations, in which the first-order line is not perpendicular to the anisotropy axis at low temperatures. Thermodynamic quantities, as the entropy and the specific heat curves can be obtained so as to analyze the nature of the phase transition points. Also, the possibility of using larger sizes constitutes an improvement regarding other mean-field approximations that use clusters.

The spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model with competing short- and long-range interactions

The phase diagrams of the spin-$3/2$ Blume-Capel model with competing short and long-range interactions were studied through the free energy density obtained by analytical methods. The competition emerges when positive short-range interactions of strength $K$ arranged in a linear chain tend to establish an anti-parallel spin order, whereas negative long-range interactions $-J$ tend to align them in parallel. Thus, no ferromagnetic order exists for $K/J > 0.25$. So, the phase-diagrams were scanned by varying the values of $K$ in this interval. As in other similar study done for the spin-1 case, the second-order frontier separating the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases is transformed gradually into a first-order line, when $K/J$ is greater than a certain critical value. Accordingly, there is a subinterval of $K$, for which two tricritical points appear restricting the length of the second-order frontier. Nevertheless, for greater values of $K/J$, the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic frontier becomes wholly of first order. Also, the tipical coexistence line, which divides two different ferromagnetic phases of magnetization $m=3/2$ and $m=1/2$, becomes more complex by giving rise to another line of coexistence with a reentrant behavior that encloses a third ordered phase. In this case, the competition is such that there is a region in the phase diagram, where for each spin $i$ with $S_{i}=3/2$ ($S_{i}=-3/2$), there is another one spin $j$ with $S_{j}=-1/2$ ($S_{j}=1/2$), so the absolute value of the magnetization per spin is one.

Multicritical Behavior of Two Coupled Ising Models in the Presence of a Random Field

A system defined by two coupled Ising models, with a bimodal random field acting in one of them, is investigated. The interactions among variables of each Ising system are infinite-ranged, a limit where mean field becomes exact. This model is studied at zero temperature, as well as for finite temperatures, representing physical situations which are appropriate for describing real systems, such as plastic crystals. A very rich critical behavior is found, depending directly on the particular choices of the temperature, couplings, and random-field strengths. Phase diagrams exhibiting ordered, partially-ordered, and disordered phases are analyzed, showing the sequence of transitions through all these phases, similarly to what occurs in plastic crystals. Due to the wide variety of critical phenomena presented by the model, its usefulness for describing critical behavior in other substances is also expected.

Diamagnetic susceptibility of spin-triplet ferromagnetic superconductors

We calculate the diamagnetic susceptibility in zero external magnetic field above the phase transition from ferromagnetic phase to phase of coexistence of ferromagnetic order and unconventional superconductivity. For this aim we use generalized Ginzburg-Landau free energy of unconventional ferromagnetic superconductor with spin-triplet electron pairing. A possible application of the result to some intermetallic compounds is briefly discussed.

Multicriticality in the Blume-Capel model under a continuous-field probability distribution

The multicritical behavior of the Blume-Capel model with infinite-range interactions is investigated by introducing quenched disorder in the crystal field $Δ_{i}$, which is represented by a superposition of two Gaussian distributions with the same width $σ$, centered at $Δ_{i} = Δ$ and $Δ_{i} = 0$, with probabilities $p$ and $(1-p)$, respectively. A rich variety of phase diagrams is presented, and their distinct topologies are shown for different values of $σ$ and $p$. The tricritical behavior is analyzed through the existence of fourth-order critical points as well as how the complexity of the phase diagrams is reduced by the strength of the disorder.
