Effective models of membranes from symmetry breaking

We show how to obtain all the models of the continuous description of membranes by constructing the appropriate non-linear realizations of the Euclidean symmetries of the embedding. The procedure has the advantage of giving a unified formalism with which the models are generated and highlights the relevant order parameters in each phase. We use our findings to investigate a fluid description of both tethered and hexatic membranes, showing that both the melting and the loss of local order induce long range interactions in the high temperature fluid phase. The results can be used to understand the appearance of intrinsic ripples in crystalline membranes in a thermal bath.

Quantum corrections in Galileon theories

We calculate the one-loop quantum corrections in the cubic Galileon theory, using cutoff regularization. We confirm the expected form of the one-loop effective action and that the couplings of the Galileon theory do not get renormalized. However, new terms, not included in the tree-level action, are induced by quantum corrections. We also consider the one-loop corrections in an effective brane theory, which belongs to the Horndeski or generalized Galileon class. We find that new terms are generated by quantum corrections, while the tree-level couplings are also renormalized. We conclude that the structure of the generalized Galileon theories is altered by quantum corrections more radically than that of the Galileon theory.

On the non-local heat kernel expansion

We propose a novel derivation of the non-local heat kernel expansion, first studied by Barvinsky, Vilkovisky and Avramidi, based on simple diagrammatic equations satisfied by the heat kernel. For Laplace-type differential operators we obtain the explicit form of the non-local heat kernel form factors to second order in the curvature. Our method can be generalized easily to the derivation of the non-local heat kernel expansion of a wide class of differential operators.

The renormalization of fluctuating branes, the Galileon and asymptotic safety

We consider the renormalization of d-dimensional hypersurfaces (branes) embedded in flat (d+1)-dimensional space. We parametrize the truncated effective action in terms of geometric invariants built from the extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures. We study the renormalization-group running of the couplings and explore the fixed-point structure. We find evidence for an ultraviolet fixed point similar to the one underlying the asymptotic-safety scenario of gravity. We also examine whether the structure of the Galileon theory, which can be reproduced in the nonrelativistic limit, is preserved at the quantum level.

Higher Derivative Gravity from the Universal Renormalization Group Machine

We study the renormalization group flow of higher derivative gravity, utilizing the functional renormalization group equation for the average action. Employing a recently proposed algorithm, termed the universal renormalization group machine, for solving the flow equation, all the universal features of the one-loop beta-functions are recovered. While the universal part of the beta-functions admits two fixed points, we explicitly show that the existence of one of them depends on the choice of regularization scheme, indicating that it is most probably unphysical.

Asymptotic safety and the gauged SU(N) nonlinear sigma-model

We study the beta functions of the leading, two-derivative terms of the left-gauged SU(N) nonlinear sigma-model in d dimensions. In d>2, we find the usual Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point for the gauge coupling and an attractive non-Gaussian fixed point for the Goldstone boson coupling. The position of the latter fixed point controls the chiral expansion, unitarity and the strength of the tree-level Goldstone boson scattering amplitudes. Attention is paid to the gauge- and scheme-dependence of the results.

Fluid Membranes and 2d Quantum Gravity

We study the RG flow of two dimensional (fluid) membranes embedded in Euclidean D-dimensional space using functional RG methods based on the effective average action. By considering a truncation ansatz for the effective average action with both extrinsic and intrinsic curvature terms we derive a system of beta functions for the running surface tension, bending rigidity and Gaussian rigidity. We look for non-trivial fixed points but we find no evidence for a crumpling transition at $T\neq0$. Finally, we propose to identify the $D\rightarrow 0$ limit of the theory with two dimensional quantum gravity. In this limit we derive new beta functions for both cosmological and Newton's constants.

Asymptotic Safety in Einstein Gravity and Scalar-Fermion Matter

Within the functional renormalization group approach we study the effective QFT of Einstein gravity and one self-interacting scalar coupled to N_f Dirac fermions. We include in our analysis the matter anomalous dimensions induced by all the interactions and analyze the highly non linear beta functions determining the renormalization flow. We find the existence of a non trivial fixed point structure both for the gravity and the matter sector, besides the usual gaussian matter one. This suggest that asymptotic safety could be realized in the gravitational sector \emph{and} in the standard model. Non triviality in the Higgs sector might involve gravitational interactions.

One loop beta functions and fixed points in Higher Derivative Sigma Models

We calculate the one loop beta functions for nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions containing general two and four derivative terms. In the O(N) model there are four such terms and nontrivial fixed points exist for all N \geq 4. In the chiral SU(N) models there are in general six couplings, but only five for N=3 and four for N=2; we find fixed points only for N=2,3. In the approximation considered, the four derivative couplings are asymptotically free but the coupling in the two derivative term has a nonzero limit. These results support the hypothesis that certain sigma models may be asymptotically safe.
