A physical model for dementia

Aging associated brain decline often result in some kind of dementia. Even when this is a complex brain disorder a physical model can be used in order to describe its general behavior. This model is based in first principles. A probabilistic model for the development of dementia is obtained and fitted to some experimental data obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative. It is explained how dementia appears as a consequence of aging and why it is irreversible.

Approaching allelic probabilities and Genome-Wide Association Studies from beta distributions

In this paper we have proposed a model for the distribution of allelic probabilities for generating populations as reliably as possible. Our objective was to develop such a model which would allow simulating allelic probabilities with different observed truncation and de- gree of noise. In addition, we have also introduced here a complete new approach to analyze a genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset, starting from a new test of association with a statistical distribution and two effect sizes of each genotype. The new methodologi- cal approach was applied to a real data set together with a Monte Carlo experiment which showed the power performance of our new method. Finally, we compared the new method based on beta distribution with the conventional method (based on Chi-Squared distribu- tion) using the agreement Kappa index and a principal component analysis (PCA). Both the analyses show found differences existed between both the approaches while selecting the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in association.

Tsallis entropy approach to radiotherapy treatments

The biological effect of one single radiation dose on a living tissue has been described by several radiobiological models. However, the fractionated radiotherapy requires to account for a new magnitude: time. In this paper we explore the biological consequences posed by the mathematical prolongation of a model to fractionated treatment. Nonextensive composition rules are introduced to obtain the survival fraction and equivalent physical dose in terms of a time dependent factor describing the tissue trend towards recovering its radioresistance (a kind of repair coefficient). Interesting (known and new) behaviors are described regarding the effectiveness of the treatment which is shown to be fundamentally bound to this factor. The continuous limit, applicable to brachytherapy, is also analyzed in the framework of nonextensive calculus. Also here a coefficient arises that rules the time behavior. All the results are discussed in terms of the clinical evidence and their major implications are highlighted.

Statistical mechanics formulation of radiobiology

The expression of survival factors for radiation damaged cells is empirical and based on probabilistic assumptions. We obtain it either from the maximum entropy principle for the classical Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy and/or from the Tsallis entropy. Empiric models are found to be particular cases of the obtained expression. The survival factor exhibits a phase transition behaviour. This formulation supports different tissues grouped as universality classes.
