Generalised P and CP transformations in the 3-Higgs-doublet model

We study generalised P and CP transformations in the three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) with Higgs and gauge fields only. We find that there are two equivalence classes, with respect to flavour transformations, of generalised P transformations and there is only one class of CP transformations. We discuss the conditions the potential has to satisfy in order to be invariant under these transformations. We apply the method of bilinears which we briefly review. We discuss the relation to the conventional basis, where the potential is written in terms of scalar products of the doublet fields. In particular we reproduce the known result that a potential is invariant under CP transformations if and only if there is a conventional basis where all parameters are real. Eventually we study standard P and CP transformations in the $n$-Higgs-doublet model (nHDM). We show that for the bilinears of the nHDM the standard CP transformation corresponds to a diagonal linear transformation with only $\pm 1$ as diagonal elements. We give this matrix explicitly for arbitrary $n$.

The MCPM, a two-Higgs-doublet model with maximal CP symmetry, and LHC13

We continue our investigation of the phenomenological consequences of the MCPM for the LHC experiments. As in any two-Higgs-doublet model we have in the MCPM three neutral Higgs bosons and one charged Higgs-boson pair $H^\pm$. Here we discuss the two-photon production in proton-proton collisions. We find that in the MCPM a resonance-type structure in the $γγ$ invariant mass distribution is predicted around twice the $H^\pm$ mass $m_{H^\pm}$ with a width $2\; Γ_H$ where $Γ_H$ is the $H^\pm$ width. If we set $m_{H^\pm} = 375$ GeV, the above resonance structure appears at 750 GeV with a width of about 45 GeV. We point out various predictions of the MCPM which follow in such a scenario and which can be checked at the LHC.

Stability and symmetry breaking in the general n-Higgs-doublet model

For potentials with n-Higgs-boson doublets stability, electroweak symmetry breaking, and the stationarity equations are discussed in detail. This is done within the bilinear formalism which simplifies the investigation, in particular since irrelevant gauge degrees of freedom are systematically avoided. For the case that the potential leads to the physically relevant electroweak symmetry breaking the mass matrices of the physical Higgs bosons are given explicitly.

Stability and symmetry breaking in the general three-Higgs-doublet model

Stability, electroweak symmetry breaking, and the stationarity equations of the general three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) where all doublets carry the same hypercharge are discussed in detail. Employing the bilinear formalism the study of the 3HDM potential turns out to be straightforward. For the case that the potential leads to the physically relevant electroweak symmetry breaking we present explicit formulae for the masses of the physical Higgs bosons.

Metastable states of hydrogen: their geometric phases and flux densities

We discuss the geometric phases and flux densities for the metastable states of hydrogen with principal quantum number n=2 being subjected to adiabatically varying external electric and magnetic fields. Convenient representations of the flux densities as complex integrals are derived. Both, parity conserving (PC) and parity violating (PV) flux densities and phases are identified. General expressions for the flux densities following from rotational invariance are derived. Specific cases of external fields are discussed. In a pure magnetic field the phases are given by the geometry of the path in magnetic field space. But for electric fields in presence of a constant magnetic field and for electric plus magnetic fields the geometric phases carry information on the atomic parameters, in particular, on the PV atomic interaction. We show that for our metastable states also the decay rates can be influenced by the geometric phases and we give a concrete example for this effect. Finally we emphasise that the general relations derived here for geometric phases and flux densities are also valid for other atomic systems having stable or metastable states, for instance, for He with n=2. Thus, a measurement of geometric phases may give important experimental information on the mass matrix and the electric and magnetic dipole matrices for such systems. This could be used as a check of corresponding theoretical calculations of wave functions and matrix elements.

Towards testing a two-Higgs-doublet model with maximal CP symmetry at the LHC: construction of a Monte Carlo event generator

A Monte Carlo event generator is constructed for a two-Higgs-doublet model with maximal CP symmetry, the MCPM. The model contains five physical Higgs bosons; the $ρ'$, behaving similarly to the standard-model Higgs boson, two extra neutral bosons $h'$ and $h"$, and a charged pair $H^\pm$. The special feature of the MCPM is that, concerning the Yukawa couplings, the bosons $h'$, $h"$ and $H^\pm$ couple directly only to the second generation fermions but with strengths given by the third-generation-fermion masses. Our event generator allows the simulation of the Drell-Yan-type production processes of $h'$, $h"$ and $H^\pm$ in proton-proton collisions at LHC energies. Also the subsequent leptonic decays of these bosons into the $μ^+ μ^-$, $μ^+ ν_μ$ and $μ^- \bar ν_μ$ channels are studied as well as the dominant background processes. We estimate the integrated luminosities needed in $p p$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 8 TeV and 14 TeV for significant observations of the Higgs bosons $h'$, $h"$ and $H^\pm$ in these muonic channels.

Symmetries and renormalisation in two-Higgs-doublet models

We discuss the classification of symmetries and the corresponding symmetry groups in the two-Higgs-doublet model (THDM). We give an easily useable method how to determine the symmetry class and corresponding symmetry group of a given THDM Higgs potential. One of the symmetry classes corresponds to a Higgs potential with several simultaneous generalised CP symmetries. Extending the CP symmetry of this class to the Yukawa sector in a straightforward way, the so-called maximally-CP-symmetric model (MCPM) is obtained. We study the evolution of the quartic Higgs-potential parameters under a change of renormalisation point. Finally we compute the so called oblique parameters S, T, and U, in the MCPM and we identify large regions of viable parameter space with respect to electroweak precision measurements. We present the corresponding allowed regions for the masses of the physical Higgs bosons. Reasonable ranges for these masses, up to several hundred GeV, are obtained which should make the (extra) Higgs bosons detectable in LHC experiments.

CP properties of symmetry-constrained two-Higgs-doublet models

The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. An exact symmetry implies CP conservation. We show that soft breaking of the symmetry can lead to spontaneous CP violation (CPV) in three of the classes.

Geometric picture of generalized-CP and Higgs-family transformations in the two-Higgs-doublet model

In the two-Higgs-doublet model (THDM), generalized-CP transformations (phi_i--> X_{ij} phi_j^* where X is unitary) and unitary Higgs-family transformations (phi_i--> U_{ij} phi_j) have recently been examined in a series of papers. In terms of gauge-invariant bilinear functions of the Higgs fields phi_i, the Higgs-family transformations and the generalized-CP transformations possess a simple geometric description. Namely, these transformations correspond in the space of scalar-field bilinears to proper and improper rotations, respectively. In this formalism, recent results relating generalized CP transformations with Higgs-family transformations have a clear geometric interpretation.

Longitudinal Atomic Beam Spin Echo Experiments: A possible way to study Parity Violation in Hydrogen

We discuss the propagation of hydrogen atoms in static electric and magnetic fields in a longitudinal atomic beam spin echo (lABSE) apparatus. Depending on the choice of the external fields the atoms may acquire both dynamical and geometrical quantum mechanical phases. As an example of the former, we show first in-beam spin rotation measurements on atomic hydrogen, which are in excellent agreement with theory. Additional calculations of the behaviour of the metastable 2S states of hydrogen reveal that the geometrical phases may exhibit the signature of parity-(P-)violation. This invites for possible future lABSE experiments, focusing on P-violating geometrical phases in the lightest of all atoms.

On the phenomenology of a two-Higgs-doublet model with maximal CP symmetry at the LHC - synopsis and addendum

Predictions for LHC physics are given for a two-Higgs-doublet model having four generalized CP symmetries. In this maximally-CP-symmetric model (MCPM) the first fermion family is, at tree level, uncoupled to the Higgs fields and thus massless. The second and third fermion families have a very symmetric coupling to the Higgs fields. But through the electroweak symmetry breaking a large mass hierarchy is generated between these fermion families. Thus, the fermion mass spectrum of the model presents a rough approximation to what is observed in Nature. In the MCPM the couplings of the Higgs bosons to the fermions are completely fixed. This allows us to present clear predictions for the production at the LHC and for the decays of the physical Higgs bosons. As salient feature we find rather large cross sections for Higgs-boson production via Drell-Yan type processes. In this paper we present a short outline of the model and extend a former study by the predictions at LHC for a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV.

A computer controlled pendulum with position readout

We have designed, built and operated a physical pendulum which allows one to demonstrate experimentally the behaviour of the pendulum under any equation of motion for such a device for any initial conditions. All parameters in the equation of motion can be defined by the user. The potential of the apparatus reaches from demonstrating simple undamped harmonic oscillations to complex chaotic behaviour of the pendulum. The position data of the pendulum as well as derived kinematical quantities like velocity and acceleration can be stored for later offline analysis.

On the phenomenology of a two-Higgs-doublet model with maximal CP symmetry at the LHC

Predictions for LHC physics are worked out for a two-Higgs-doublet model having four generalized CP symmetries. In the MCPM there are, as in every two-Higgs-doublet model, five physical Higgs bosons, three neutral ones and a charged pair. With experiments at the LHC it should be possible to check these predictions.

On the phenomenology of a two-Higgs-doublet model with maximal CP symmetry at the LHC, II: radiative effects

The processes proton + antiproton -> gamma + heavy-flavour jet(s) + X and proton + proton -> gamma + heavy-flavour jet(s) + X are studied in the framework of a special two-Higgs-doublet model, the MCPM. As distinguishing feature of this model we find that radiative Higgs-boson production and decay lead to heavy flavour c jets but no b jets in the above processes. Thus, the prediction is that b jets should be given by the normal QCD processes whereas for c jets an excess over the QCD expectation should occur. We present results both for Tevatron and LHC energies.

Parity Violation in Hydrogen and Longitudinal Atomic Beam Spin Echo I

We discuss the propagation of hydrogen atoms in static electric and magnetic fields in a longitudinal atomic beam spin echo (lABSE) apparatus. There the atoms acquire geometric (Berry) phases that exhibit a new manifestation of parity-(P-)violation in atomic physics. We provide analytical as well as numerical calculations of the behaviour of the metastable 2S states of hydrogen. The conditions for electromagnetic field configurations that allow for adiabatic evolution of the relevant atomic states are investigated. Our results provide the theoretical basis for the discussion of possible measurements of P-violating geometric phases in lABSE experiments.

Stability and Symmetry Breaking in the General Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

A method is presented for the analysis of the scalar potential in the general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model. This allows us to give the conditions for the stability of the potential and for electroweak symmetry breaking in this model in a very concise way. These results are then applied to two different Higgs potentials in the literature, namely the MSSM and the Two-Higgs-Doublet potential proposed by Gunion at al. All known results for these models follow easily as special cases from the general results. In particular, in the potential of Gunion et al. we can clarify some interesting aspects of the model with the help of the proposed method.

Anomalous gauge-boson couplings and the Higgs-boson mass

We study anomalous gauge-boson couplings induced by a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian containing ten operators of dimension six built from the boson fields of the Standard Model (SM) before spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). After SSB some operators lead to new three- and four-gauge-boson interactions, some contribute to the diagonal and off-diagonal kinetic terms of the gauge bosons and to the mass terms of the W and Z bosons. This requires a renormalisation of the gauge-boson fields, which, in turn, modifies the charged- and neutral-current interactions, although none of the additional operators contain fermion fields. Bounds on the anomalous couplings from electroweak precision measurements at LEP and SLD are correlated with the Higgs-boson mass m_H. Rather moderate values of anomalous couplings allow m_H up to 500 GeV. At a future linear collider the triple-gauge-boson couplings gammaWW and ZWW can be measured in the reaction e+e- --> WW. We compare three approaches to anomalous gauge-boson couplings: the form-factor approach, the addition of anomalous coupling terms to the SM Lagrangian after and, as outlined above, before SSB. The translation of the bounds on the couplings from one approach to another is not straightforward. We show that it can be done for the process e+e- --> WW by defining new effective ZWW couplings.

The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

CP Violation in the 3 Jet and 4 Jet Decays of the Z Boson at GigaZ

We review CP-violating effects in Z --> 3 jet and Z --> 4 jet decays, assuming the presence of CP-violating effective Z b bbar G and Z b bbar G G couplings. Longitudinal beam polarization is included in the studies. We propose a direct search for such CP-violating couplings by using various CP-odd observables. The data of a future linear collider running at the Z-resonance in the so-called GigaZ option should give significant information on the couplings. Finally we show that stringent bounds on the mass of excited b quarks can be derived if appropriate couplings are of a size characteristic of a strong interaction.

A Path Integral Approach to Inclusive Processes

The single-particle inclusive differential cross-section for a reaction $a+b\to c+X$ is written as the imaginary part of a correlation function in a for ward scattering amplitude for $a+b\to a+b$ in a modified effective theory. In this modified theory the interaction Hamiltonian $\tilde H_I$ equals $H_I$ in the original theory up to a certain time. Then there is a sign change and $\tilde H_I$ becomes nonlocal. This is worked out in detail for scalar field models and for QED plus the abelian gluon model. A suitable path integral for direct calculations of inclusive cross sections is presented.

Observing the Odderon: Tensor Meson Photoproduction

We calculate high-energy photoproduction of the tensor meson $f_2(1270)$ by odderon and photon exchange in the reaction $γ+ {\rm{p}} \to f_2(1270) + {\rm{X}}$, where X is either the nucleon or the sum of the N(1520) and N(1535) baryon resonances. Odderon exchange dominates except at very small transverse momentum, and we find a cross section of about 20 nb at a centre-of-mass energy of 20 GeV. This result is compared with what is currently known experimentally about $f_2$ photoproduction. We conclude that odderon exchange is not ruled out by present data. On the contrary, an odderon-induced cross section of the above magnitude may help to explain a puzzling result observed by the E687 experiment.

CP Violation in Decays Z --> 4 Jets

We analyse CP-violating effects in Z \to 4 jet decays, assuming the presence of CP-violating effective $Z b \bar{b} G$ and $Z b \bar{b} G G$ couplings. We discuss the influence of these couplings on the decay width. Furthermore, we propose various strategies of a direct search for such CP-violating couplings by using different CP-odd observables. The present data of LEP 1 should give significant information on the couplings.

Odderon and photon exchange in electroproduction of pseudoscalar mesons

We investigate the reaction $e p \to e PS X$ where PS denotes a pseudoscalar meson $π^0, η, η'$, or $η_c$ and X either a proton or resonance or continuum states into which the proton can go by diffractive excitation. At high energies photon and odderon exchange contribute to the reaction. The photon exchange contribution is evaluated exactly using data for the total virtual photon-proton absorption cross section. The odderon exchange contribution is calculated in nonperturbative QCD, using functional integral techniques and the model of the stochastic vacuum. For the proton we assume a quark-diquark structure as suggested by the small odderon amplitude in $pp$ and $p \bar{p}$ forward scattering. We show that odderon exchange leads to a much larger inelastic than elastic PS production cross section. Observation of our reaction at HERA would establish the soft odderon as an exchange object on an equal footing with the soft pomeron and would give us valuable insight into both the nucleon structure and the mechanism of high energy diffractive scattering.

The CP-violating triple gluon interaction in Z -> 4 jets

We analyse CP-violating effects in Z -> 4 jet decays, assuming the presence of a CP-violating effective triple gluon coupling. We discuss the influence of this coupling on the decay width. Furthermore, we analyse different CP-odd observables and propose strategies of a direct search for such a CP-violating GGG coupling. The present data of LEP 1 should give significant information on the coupling.

Differential cross sections for high energy elastic hadron-hadron scattering in nonperturbative QCD

Total and differential cross sections for high energy and small momentum transfer elastic hadron-hadron scattering are studied in QCD using a functional integral approach. The hadronic amplitudes are governed by vacuum expectation values of lightlike Wegner-Wilson loops, for which a matrix cumulant expansion is derived. The cumulants are evaluated within the framework of the Minkowskian version of the model of the stochastic vacuum. Using the second cumulant, we calculate elastic differential cross sections for hadron-hadron scattering. The agreement with experimental data is good.

Flavour Dynamics with General Scalar Fields

We consider a spontaneously broken gauge theory based on the standard model (SM) group G = SU(2) x U(1) with scalar fields that carry arbitrary representations of G, and we investigate some general properties of the charged and neutral current involving these fields. In particular we derive the conditions for having real or complex couplings of the Z boson to two different neutral or charged scalar fields, and for the existence of CP-violating Z-scalar-scalar couplings. Moreover, we study models with the same fermion content as in the SM, with one SU(2) Higgs singlet, and an arbitrary number of Higgs doublets. We show that the structure of the Z-Higgs boson and of the Yukawa couplings in these models can be such that CP-violating Zb{\bar b}G form factors which conserve chirality are induced at the one-loop level.

Anomalous triple gauge couplings in e+ e- -> W+ W- and "optimal" strategies for their measurement

We show how one can measure anomalous WWZ- and WWgamma-couplings with minimal statistical error using integrated observables, without having to assume that the anomalous couplings are small. We propose a parametrisation of these couplings which is well suited for the extraction of both single and many parameters, and which leads to a very simple form of the integrated cross section, from which additional information on the couplings can be obtained.

CP Violation in radiative Z Decays

We propose to test the CP symmetry in the reactions Z -> mu+ mu- gamma and Z -> tau+ tau- gamma. The experimental analysis of angular correlations allows to determine a set of effective couplings: the electric and weak dipole moments of the muon and the tau lepton, and in particular chirality conserving 4-particle couplings, all of which can be induced by CP--violation in renormalizable theories of electroweak interactions beyond the Standard Model. We update an indirect bound on the weak dipole moment of the muon.

Single Pseudoscalar Meson Production in Diffractive ep Scattering

Exclusive pseudoscalar meson production in ep scattering at high energies is a direct probe for a possible "odderon" exchange in soft hadronic processes. Using a simple phenomenological ansatz for the odderon, we demonstrate how it can be separated from the contribution due to photon-photon fusion, and the relevant parameters be measured. Total cross sections and differential distributions are presented for pi0, eta, eta', and eta_c production. Results are given from both a full calculation and one using the equivalent photon approximation. The accuracy of the latter is discussed.

STRING FORMATION IN THE MODEL OF THE STOCHASTIC VACUUM AND CONSISTENCY WITH LOW ENERGY THEOREMS

We re-derive and discuss two low energy theorems which relate the potential of a static quark-antiquark pair with the total energy and action stored in the flux tube between the sources. In lattice QCD these relations are known as Michael's sum-rules, but we give an essential correction to one of them. Then we relate the low energy theorems to the virial theorem for a heavy quark-antiquark bound state. Finally we compare the results for the flux tube formation, which have been calculated in the model of the stochastic vacuum, with the low energy theorems and obtain consistency. From this we conclude that the model describes the non perturbative gluon dynamics of QCD at a renormalization scale, where the strong coupling constant is given by $\al_s = 0.57$.

CP Violation and the Width $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$

We discuss the effect of CP-violating $Zb\bar{b}$, $Zb\bar{b}G$ and $Zb\bar{b}γ$ couplings on the width $Γ(Z\rightarrow b\bar bX)$. The presence of such couplings leads in a natural way to an increase of this width relative to the prediction of the standard model. Various strategies of a direct search for such CP-violating couplings by using CP-odd observables are outlined. The number of $Z$ bosons required to obtain significant information on the couplings in this way is well within the reach of present LEP experiments.

Polarization Rotation Effects due to Parity Violation in Atoms

We present a study of parity (P) violating polarization rotations of atoms in external electric fields. Five different types of rotations are identified and the consequences of time reversal invariance (T) are discussed. The role played by Zeldovich's electric dipole moment of unstable states is elucidated. To calculate the effects, we use the standard model of elementary particle physics where P violation in atoms is due to the exchange of the Z boson between the quarks in the nucleus and the atomic electrons. We consider in detail hydrogen-like systems in $n=2$ states, especially $^1_1$H, $^4_2$He$^+$, and $^{12}_6$C$^{5+}$. We discuss ways to obtain in some cases large enhancement factors for the P-violating polarization rotations and show that e.g. for $^1_1$H one could in principle observe rotations as large as a few percent, where for a statistically significant result one would need a total of $10^{15}$ polarized atoms. We point out that some of our P-violating polarization rotations are very sensitive to the nuclear spin-dependent part of the P-violating Hamiltonian which receives a contribution from the polarized strange quark density in polarized nuclei.
