Determination of hexadecapole (β4β_{4}) deformation of the light-mass nucleus 24^{24}Mg using quasi-elastic measurement

Quasi-elastic scattering measurements have been performed using 16^{16}O and 24^{24}Mg projectiles off 90^{90}Zr at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Experimental data have been analyzed in the framework of coupled channels (CC) calculations using the code CCFULL. The quasi-elastic scattering excitation function and derived barrier distribution for 16^{16}O + 90^{90}Zr reaction are well reproduced by the CC calculations using the vibrational coupling strengths for 90^{90}Zr reported in the literature. Using these vibrational coupling strengths, a Bayesian analysis is carried out for 24^{24}Mg + 90^{90}Zr reaction. The β2β_{2} and β4β_{4} values for 24^{24}Mg are determined to be +0.43±0.02+0.43 \pm 0.02 and −0.11±0.02 - 0.11 \pm 0.02, respectively. The β2β_{2} parameter determined in the present work is in good agreement with results obtained using inelastic scattering probes. The hexadecapole deformation of 24^{24}Mg has been measured very precisely for the first time. Present results establish that quasi-elastic scattering could provide a useful probe to determine the ground state deformation of atomic nuclei.

Revalidation of the isobaric multiplet mass equation for the A=20A=20 quintet

An unexpected breakdown of the isobaric multiplet mass equation in the A=20A=20, T=2T=2 quintet was recently reported, presenting a challenge to modern theories of nuclear structure. In the present work, the excitation energy of the lowest T=2T = 2 state in 20^{20}Na has been measured to be 6498.4±0.2stat±0.4syst6498.4 \pm 0.2_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.4_{\textrm{syst}} keV by using the superallowed 0+→0+0^+ \rightarrow 0^+ beta decay of 20^{20}Mg to access it and an array of high-purity germanium detectors to detect its γγ-ray deexcitation. This value differs by 27 keV (1.9 standard deviations) from the recommended value of 6525±146525 \pm 14 keV and is a factor of 28 more precise. The isobaric multiplet mass equation is shown to be revalidated when the new value is adopted.
