Engineering long-range interactions between ultracold atoms with light

Ultracold temperatures in dilute quantum gases opened the way to an exquisite control of matter at the quantum level. Here we focus on the control of ultracold atomic collisions using a laser to engineer their interactions at large interatomic distances. We show that the entrance channel of two colliding ultracold atoms can be coupled to a repulsive collisional channel by the laser light so that the overall interaction between the two atoms becomes repulsive: this prevents them to come close together and to undergo inelastic processes, thus protecting the atomic gases from unwanted losses. We illustrate such an optical shielding mechanism with potassium and cesium atoms colliding at ultracold temperature (\textless 1 microkelvin). The process is described in the framework of the dressed-state picture and we then solve the resulting staionary coupled Schrödinger equations. The role of spontaneous emission and photoinduced inelastic scattering is also investigated as possible limitations of the shielding efficiency. We predict an almost complete suppression of inelastic collisions using a laser-induced coupling characterized by a Rabi frequency of $ω= 200$~MHz and a frequency detuned from the potassium D2 transition by $Δ= 200$~MHz. We found the polarization of the laser has no influence on this efficiency. This proposal could easily be formulated for other bi-alkali-metal pairs as their long-range interaction are all very similar to each other.

Interaction potentials and ultracold scattering cross sections for the $^7$Li$^+$-$^7$Li ion-atom system

We calculate the isotope independent Li$^+$-Li potential energy curves for the electronic ground and first excited states. Scattering phase shifts and total scattering cross section for the $^7$Li$^+$-$^7$Li collision are calculated with emphasis on the ultra-low energy domain down to the $s$-wave regime. The effect of physically motivated alterations on the calculated potential energy curves is used to determine the bound of accuracy of the low-energy scattering parameters for the ion-atom system. It is found that the scattering length for the A$^2Σ_u^+$ state, $a_u$ = 1325 a$_0$, is positive and has well-constrained bounds. For the X$^2Σ_g^+$ state, the scattering length, $a_g$ = 20465 a$_0$ has a large magnitude as it is sensitive to the restrained change of the potential, due to the presence of a vibrational state in the vicinity of the dissociation limit.

Long-range interactions between polar bialkali ground-state molecules in arbitrary vibrational levels

We have calculated the isotropic $C\_6$ coefficients characterizing the long-range van der Waals interaction between two identical heteronuclear alkali-metal diatomic molecules in the same arbitrary vibrational level of their ground electronic state $X^1Σ^+$. We consider the ten species made up of $^7$Li, $^{23}$Na, $^{39}$K, $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs. Following our previous work [M.~Lepers \textit{et.~al.}, Phys.~Rev.~A \textbf{88}, 032709 (2013)] we use the sum-over-state formula inherent to the second-order perturbation theory, composed of the contributions from the transitions within the ground state levels, from the transition between ground-state and excited state levels, and from a crossed term. These calculations involve a combination of experimental and quantum-chemical data for potential energy curves and transition dipole moments. We also investigate the case where the two molecules are in different vibrational levels and we show that the Moelwyn-Hughes approximation is valid provided that it is applied for each of the three contributions to the sum-over-state formula. Our results are particularly relevant in the context of inelastic and reactive collisions between ultracold bialkali molecules, in deeply bound or in Feshbach levels.

Model for the hyperfine structure of electronically-excited ${\rm KCs}$ molecules

A model for determining the hyperfine structure of the excited electronic states of diatomic bialkali heteronuclear molecules is formulated from the atomic hyperfine interactions, and is applied to the case of bosonic $^{39}$KCs and fermionic $^{40}$KCs molecules. The hyperfine structure of the potential energy curves of the states correlated to the K($4s\,^2S_{1/2}$)+Cs($6p\,^2P_{1/2,3/2}$) dissociation limits is described in terms of different coupling schemes depending on the internuclear distance $R$. These results provide the first step in the calculation of the hyperfine structure of rovibrational levels of these excited molecular states in the perspective of the identification of efficient paths for creating ultracold ground-state KCs molecules.

Prospects for the formation of ultracold polar ground state KCs molecules via an optical process

Heteronuclear alkali-metal dimers represent the class of molecules of choice for creating samples of ultracold molecules exhibiting an intrinsic large permanent electric dipole moment. Among them, the KCs molecule, with a permanent dipole moment of 1.92~Debye still remains to be observed in ultracold conditions. Based on spectroscopic studies available in the literature completed by accurate quantum chemistry calculations, we propose several optical coherent schemes to create ultracold bosonic and fermionic KCs molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground level, starting from a weakly bound level of their electronic ground state manifold. The processes rely on the existence of convenient electronically excited states allowing an efficient stimulated Raman adiabatic transfer of the level population.

Ultracold Dipolar Molecules Composed of Strongly Magnetic Atoms

In a combined experimental and theoretical effort, we demonstrate a novel type of dipolar system made of ultracold bosonic dipolar molecules with large magnetic dipole moments. Our dipolar molecules are formed in weakly bound Feshbach molecular states from a sample of strongly magnetic bosonic erbium atoms. We show that the ultracold magnetic molecules can carry very large dipole moments and we demonstrate how to create and characterize them, and how to change their orientation. Finally, we confirm that the relaxation rates of molecules in a quasi-two dimensional geometry can be reduced by using the anisotropy of the dipole-dipole interaction and that this reduction follows a universal dipolar behavior.

Experimental evidence of twin fast metastable H(2S) atoms from dissociation of cold H_2 induced by electrons

We report the direct detection of two metastable H(2S) atoms coming from the dissociation of a single cold H_2 molecule, in coincidence measurements. The molecular dissociation was induced by electron impact in order to avoid limitations by the selection rules governing radiative transitions. Two detectors, placed close from the collision center, measure the neutral metastable H(2S) through a localized quenching process, which mixes the H(2S) state with the H(2P), leading to a Lyman-αdetection. Our data show the accomplishment of a coincidence measurement which proves for the first time the existence of the H(2S)-H(2S) dissociation channel.

Formation of ultracold metastable Rb2 molecules in their v"=0 level by blue-detuned photoassociation

We report on the observation of blue-detuned photoassociation in Rb2, in which vibrational levels are energetically above the corresponding excited atomic asymptote. 85Rb atoms in a MOT were photoassociated at short internuclear distances to levels of the (1)3Pi g state at a rate of approximately 5x10^4 molecules/s. We have observed most of the predicted vibrational levels for all four spin-orbit components 0g+, 0g-, 1g, and 2g, including levels of the 0g+ outer well. These molecules decay to the metastable a3Sigma u+ state, some preferentially to the v"=0 level, as we have observed for photoassociation to the v'=8 level of the 1g component.

Formation of ultracold RbCs molecules by photoassociation

The formation of ultracold metastable RbCs molecules is observed in a double species magneto-optical trap through photoassociation below the ^85Rb(5S_1/2)+^133Cs(6P_3/2) dissociation limit followed by spontaneous emission. The molecules are detected by resonance enhanced two-photon ionization. Using accurate quantum chemistry calculations of the potential energy curves and transition dipole moment, we interpret the observed photoassociation process as occurring at short internuclear distance, in contrast with most previous cold atom photoassociation studies. The vibrational levels excited by photoassociation belong to the 5th 0^+ or the 4th 0^- electronic states correlated to the Rb(5P_1/2,3/2)+Cs(6S_1/2) dissociation limit. The computed vibrational distribution of the produced molecules shows that they are stabilized in deeply bound vibrational states of the lowest triplet state. We also predict that a noticeable fraction of molecules is produced in the lowest level of the electronic ground state.

Global analysis of data on the spin-orbit coupled $A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+}$ and $b^{3}Π_{u}$ states of Cs2

We present experimentally derived potential curves and spin-orbit interaction functions for the strongly perturbed $A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+}$ and $b^{3}Π_{u}$ states of the cesium dimer. The results are based on data from several sources. Laser-induced fluorescence Fourier transform spectroscopy (LIF FTS) was used some time ago in the Laboratoire Aimé Cotton primarily to study the $X ^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$ state. More recent work at Tsinghua University provides information from moderate resolution spectroscopy on the lowest levels of the $b^{3}Π_{0u}^{\pm}$ states as well as additional high resolution data. From Innsbruck University, we have precision data obtained with cold Cs$_{2}$ molecules. Recent data from Temple University was obtained using the optical-optical double resonance polarization spectroscopy technique, and finally, a group at the University of Latvia has added additional LIF FTS data. In the Hamiltonian matrix, we have used analytic potentials (the Expanded Morse Oscillator form) with both finite-difference (FD) coupled-channels and discrete variable representation (DVR) calculations of the term values. Fitted diagonal and off-diagonal spin-orbit functions are obtained and compared with {\it ab initio} results from Temple and Moscow State universities.

Population redistribution in optically trapped polar molecules

We investigate the rovibrational population redistribution of polar molecules in the electronic ground state induced by spontaneous emission and blackbody radiation. As a model system we use optically trapped LiCs molecules formed by photoassociation in an ultracold two-species gas. The population dynamics of vibrational and rotational states is modeled using an ab-initio electric dipole moment function and experimental potential energy curves. Comparison with the evolution of the v"=3 electronic ground state yields good qualitative agreement. The analysis provides important input to assess applications of ultracold LiCs molecules in quantum simulation and ultracold chemistry.

Influence of a Feshbach resonance on the photoassociation of LiCs

We analyse the formation of ultracold 7Li133Cs molecules in the rovibrational ground state through photoassociation into the B1Pi state, which has recently been reported [J. Deiglmayr et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 133004 (2008)]. Absolute rate constants for photoassociation at large detunings from the atomic asymptote are determined and are found to be surprisingly large. The photoassociation process is modeled using a full coupled-channel calculation for the continuum state, taking all relevant hyperfine states into account. The enhancement of the photoassociation rate is found to be caused by an `echo' of the triplet component in the singlet component of the scattering wave function at the inner turning point of the lowest triplet a3Sigma+ potential. This perturbation can be ascribed to the existence of a broad Feshbach resonance at low scattering energies. Our results elucidate the important role of couplings in the scattering wave function for the formation of deeply bound ground state molecules via photoassociation.

Potential energy and dipole moment surfaces of H3- molecule

A new potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of the simplest triatomic anion H3- is determined for a large number of geometries. Its accuracy is improved at short and large distances compared to previous studies. The permanent dipole moment surface of the state is also computed for the first time. Nine vibrational levels of H3- and fourteen levels of D3- are obtained, bound by at most ~70 cm^{-1} and ~ 126 cm^{-1} respectively. These results should guide the spectroscopic search of the H3- ion in cold gases (below 100K) of molecular hydrogen in the presence of H3- ions.

The permanent dipole moment of LiCs in the ground state

Recently we demonstrated the formation of ultracold polar LiCs molecules in deeply bound levels of the X1S+ ground state, including the rovibrational ground state [J. Deiglmayr et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 133004 (2008)]. Here we report on the first experimental determination of the permanent electric dipole moment of deeply bound LiCs molecules. For X1S+,v"=2 and v"=3 we measure values of mu=5.5(2) Debye and 5.3(2) Debye respectively.

High-resolution spectroscopy of triplet states of Rb2 by femtosecond pump-probe photoionization of doped helium nanodroplets

The dynamics of vibrational wave packets in triplet states of rubidium dimers (Rb2) formed on helium nanodroplets are studied using femtosecond pump-probe photoionization spectroscopy. Due to fast desorption of the excited Rb2 molecules off the droplets and due to their low internal temperature, wave packet oscillations can be followed up to very long pump-probe delay times >1.5ns. In the first excited triplet state (1)^3Σ_g^+, full and fractional revivals are observed with high contrast. Fourier analysis provides high-resolution vibrational spectra which are in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations.

Formation of ultracold dipolar molecules in the lowest vibrational levels by photoassociation

We recently reported the formation of ultracold LiCs molecules in the rovibrational ground state X1Sigma+,v''=0,J''=0 [J. Deiglmayr et al., PRL 101, 133004 (2008)]. Here we discuss details of the experimental setup and present a thorough analysis of the photoassociation step including the photoassociation line shape. We predict the distribution of produced ground state molecules using accurate potential nergy curves combined with an ab-initio dipole transition moment and compare this prediction with experimental ionization spectra. Additionally we improve the value of the dissociation energy for the X1Sigma+ state by high resolution spectroscopy of the vibrational ground state.

Formation of ultracold polar molecules in the rovibrational ground state

Ultracold LiCs molecules in the absolute ground state X$^1Σ^+$, v"=0, J"=0 are formed via a single photo-association step starting from laser-cooled atoms. The selective production of v"=0, J"=2 molecules with a 50-fold higher rate is also demonstrated. The rotational and vibrational state of the ground state molecules is determined in a setup combining depletion spectroscopy with resonant-enhanced multi-photon ionization time-of-flight spectroscopy. Using the determined production rate of up to 5x10^3 molecules/s, we describe a simple scheme which can provide large samples of externally and internally cold dipolar molecules.

Study of coupled states for the (4s^{2})^{1}S + (4s4p)^{3}P asymptote of Ca_{2}

The coupled states A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+} (^{1}D +}1}S), c^{3}Π_{u} (^{3}P + ^{1}S) and a^{3}Σ_{u}^{+} (^{3}P +}1}S) of the calcium dimer are investigated in a laser induced fluorescence experiment combined with high-resolution Fourier-transform spectroscopy. A global deperturbation analysis of the observed levels, considering a model, which is complete within the subspace of relevant neighboring states, is performed using the Fourier Grid Hamiltonian method. We determine the potential energy curve of the A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+} and c^{3}Π_{u} states and the strengths of the couplings between them. The c^{3}Π_{u} and \as states are of particular importance for the description of collisional processes between calcium atoms in the ground state ^{1}S_{0} and excited state ^{3}P_{1} applied in studies for establishing an optical frequency standard with Ca.

Optical Manipulation of Long-range Interactions at the 3s+3p Asymptote of Na$_2$

We investigate the influence of a laser field, which is near-resonant to the atomic sodium 3$^2$P$_{1/2}$ $\to$ 3$^2$D$_{3/2}$ transition, on the last bound levels of the A$^1Σ^+_u$ state in Na$_2$. In a molecular beam experiment level shifts up to $\approx$ 100 MHz and light induced line broadenings were observed using an optical double resonance excitation scheme. Moreover, the coupling laser can reduce the number of bound levels of the A state by one or more units, which effectively means that in the picture of a collision of a 3$^2$S$_{1/2}$ and a 3$^2$P$_{1/2}$-atom the scattering phase is altered by more than $π$. The observed effects are interpreted as light induced couplings of the A$^1Σ^+_u$ state, which correlates to the 3s$_{1/2}$+3p$_{1/2}$ asymptote, to the $4^1Σ^+_g$ and $2^1Π_g$ states at the 3s$_{1/2}$+3d$_{3/2}$ asymptote. We performed multi-channel calculations, applying the mapped Fourier grid method, which reproduce our experimentally observed level shifts well.
