An original unified approach for the description of phase tranformations in steel during cooling : first application to binary Fe-C

Exploiting Landau's theory of phase transformations, defining an original order parameter and using the phenomenological transformation temperatures, it is reported that it is possible to describe in a global approach the conditions for the formation of each phase (ferrite, bainite, martensite) from austenite during cooling in steel. It allowed to propose a new rigorous classification of the different thermodynamic conditions controlling each phase tranformation. In a second step, the approach predicts naturally the effect of cooling rate on the bainite start temperature. Finally perspectives are assessed to extend the approach in order to take into account the effect of an external field such as applied stress.

An original way for producing a 2.5 GPa strength ductile steel by rolling of martensite

A compositionally-graded steel composed of martensite with 0.4%C on the centre and bainite with 0.1%C on the surface was manufactured by partial decarburization. It is reported that the as quenched material can be cold rolled up to an equivalent strain of 1.5 without cracks. The mechanical properties of the cold-rolled material exhibits up to 2.5 GPa strength and ductility. A simple mechanical model is developed to predict the stress state after rolling of the graded structure explaining the good ductility of the present high strength materials.

Extension of Ashby's performance indexes in mixed tension-bending solicitation

Ashby's performance indexes are a fundamental tool for material selection especially for structures lightening. Unfortunately the indexes are available only for simple mechanical solicitation as pure bending or pure tension. For real applications, it is required to have a performance index for combined solicitations. This publication proposes an approach to develop this kind of extended performance index and shows the exploitation in order to compare materials performance in more realistic situations.

Revisited storage and dynamic recovery of dislocation density evolution law : toward a generalized Kocks--Mecking model of strain -hardening

The current work extends the well established approach of Kocks and Mecking by a more realistic description of strain-hardening using an original dislocation density law with a revisited physical understanding of dynamic recovery, without new material parameters and keeping only one internal variable.
