Role of Coherence and Degeneracies in Quantum Synchronisation

Progress on the study of synchronisation in quantum systems has been largely driven by specific examples which resulted in several examples of frequency entrainment as well as mutual synchronisation. Here we study quantum synchronisation by utilising Liouville space perturbation theory. We begin by clarifying the role of centers, symmetries and oscillating coherences in the context of quantum synchronisation. We then analyse the eigenspectrum of the Liouville superoperator generating the dynamics of the quantum system and determine the conditions under which synchronisation arises. We apply our framework to derive a powerful relationship between energy conservation, degeneracies and synchronisation in quantum systems. Finally, we demonstrate our approach by analysing two mutually coupled thermal machines and the close relationship between synchronisation and thermodynamic quantities.

An India-specific Compartmental Model for Covid-19: Projections and Intervention Strategies by Incorporating Geographical, Infrastructural and Response Heterogeneity

We present a compartmental meta-population model for the spread of Covid-19 in India. Our model simulates populations at a district or state level using an epidemiological model that is appropriate to Covid-19. Different districts are connected by a transportation matrix developed using available census data. We introduce uncertainties in the testing rates into the model that takes into account the disparate responses of the different states to the epidemic and also factors in the state of the public healthcare system. Our model allows us to generate qualitative projections of Covid-19 spread in India, and further allows us to investigate the effects of different proposed interventions. By building in heterogeneity at geographical and infrastructural levels and in local responses, our model aims to capture some of the complexity of epidemiological modeling appropriate to a diverse country such as India.

Generalized Measure of Quantum synchronization

We present a generalized information-theoretic measure of synchronization in quantum systems. This measure is applicable to dynamics of anharmonic oscillators, few-level atoms, and coupled oscillator networks. Furthermore, the new measure allows us to discuss synchronization of disparate physical systems such as coupled hybrid quantum systems and coupled systems undergoing mutual synchronization that are also driven locally. In many cases of interest, we find a closed-form expression for the proposed measure.

Quantum Synchronisation in Nanoscale Heat Engines

Owing to the ubiquity of synchronization in the classical world, it is interesting to study its behavior in quantum systems. Though quantum synchronisation has been investigated in many systems, a clear connection to quantum technology applications is lacking. We bridge this gap and show that nanoscale heat engines are a natural platform to study quantum synchronization and always possess a stable limit cycle. Furthermore, we demonstrate an intimate relationship between the power of a heat engine and its phase-locking properties by proving that synchronization places an upper bound on the achievable steady-state power of the engine. Finally, we show that the efficiency of the engine sets a point in terms of the bath temperatures where synchronization vanishes. We link the physical phenomenon of synchronization with the emerging field of quantum thermodynamics by establishing quantum synchronization as a mechanism of stable phase coherence.

Two-mode Gaussian product states in a Lossy Interferometer

The quantum Fisher information for a two-mode, Gaussian product state in an interferometer subject to photon loss is studied. We obtain the quantum Cramer-Rao bound on the achievable precision in phase estimation using such states. The scaling of the measurement precision with the mean photon number for such input product states is compared to the limited scaling for dual squeezed vacuum states and for dual squeezed, displaced vacuum states.

The probe readout and quantum limited measurements

Assuming that the parameter dependent evolution, as well as the measurements that are done for readout, of a quantum system that acts as the probe in a quantum limited measurement scheme are both fixed, we find the optimal initial states of the probe that will saturate the quantum Cramer-Rao bound. When the probe system is itself made of identical, elementary, two-level subsystems or qubits, we connect the optimal state of the N qubit probe to that of the one qubit probe. This is done for two different classes of dynamics for the probe qubits, one of which is entangling while the other is not. We study the limitations placed on the optimal initial state of the probe and the achievable measurement uncertainty by restrictions on the readout procedure that is applied on the probe qubits at the end of the measurement protocol.
