Reionization process dependence of the ratio of CMB polarization power spectra at low-$\ell$

We investigate how much the ratio of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization power spectra $C^{BB}_\ell/C^{EE}_\ell$ at low-$\ell$ ($\ell \lesssim 10$) depends on the process of reionization. Both such low-$\ell$ B-mode and E-mode polarization powers are dominantly produced by Thomson scattering of CMB photons off the free electrons which are produced in the process of reionization. Since the reionization should be finished until at least the redshift $z \simeq 6$ and the low-$\ell$ polarization powers are produced at late time, the ratio is rather insensitive by the ionization process at higher redshifts, but it is sensitive to the value of optical depth. The value of the ratio at $\ell=2$, however, is almost insensitive to the reionization process including the value of optical depth, and the value is approximately half of the value of tensor-to-scalar ratio. This fact can be utilized for future determination of tensor-to-scalar ratio in spite of the ambiguity due to cosmic variance.

Gauge Symmetry Restoration by Higgs Condensation in Flux Compactifications on Coset Spaces

Extra-dimensional components of gauge fields in higher-dimensional gauge theories will play a role of the Higgs field and become tachyonic after Kaluza-Klein compactifications on internal spaces with (topologically nontrivial) gauge field backgrounds. Its condensation is then expected to break gauge symmetries spontaneously. But, contrary to the expectation, some models exhibit restoration of gauge symmetries. In this paper, by considering all the massive Kaluza-Klein excitations of gauge fields, we explicitly show that some of them indeed become massless at the minimum of the Higgs potential and restore (a part of) the gauge symmetries which are broken by gauge field backgrounds. We particularly consider compactifications on $S^2$ with monopole-like fluxes and also on $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with instanton and monopole-like fluxes. In some cases, the gauge symmetry is fully restored, as argued in previous literature. In other cases, there is a stable vacuum with a partial restoration of the gauge symmetry after Higgs condensation. Topological structure of the gauge field configurations prevent the gauge symmetries to be restored.

Polarizations of CMB and the Hubble tension

Future precision measurements of CMB polarizations can shed new light on the problem so called Hubble tension. The Hubble tension comes from the difference of the evolutions of the Hubble parameter which are determined with two different distance ladders. The standard distance ladder with the observation of Cepheid variables and type Ia supernovae gives larger values of the Hubble constant, and the inverse distance ladder with the observation of the baryon acoustic oscillations both in the CMB and in the clustering of galaxies gives smaller values of the Hubble constant. These different evolutions of the Hubble parameter indicate different evolutions of the free electron density in the process of the reionization of the universe and different magnitudes of low-l polarizations of the CMB, since these polarizations are mainly produced through the Thomson scattering of CMB photons off these free electrons. We investigate the effect on CMB E-mode and B-mode polarizations of l < 12 assuming non-trivially time-dependent equation of state of dark energy. We find that the case of the standard distance ladder gives higher power of polarizations than the prediction in the LambdaCDM model.

Dynamics of Revolving D-Branes at Short Distances

We study the behavior of the effective potential between revolving D$p$-branes at all ranges of the distance $r$, interpolating $r \gg l_s$ and $r \ll l_s$ ($l_s$ is the string length). Since the one-loop open string amplitude cannot be calculated exactly, we instead employ an efficient method of $\it{ partial\ modular\ transformation}$. The method is to perform the modular transformation partially in the moduli parameter and rewrite the amplitude into a sum of contributions from both of the open and closed string massless modes. It is nevertheless free from the double counting and can approximate the open string amplitudes with less than $3\%$ accuracy. From the D-brane effective field theory point of view, this amounts to calculating the one-loop threshold corrections of infinitely many open string massive modes. We show that threshold corrections to the $ω^2 r^2$ term of the moduli field $r$ cancel among them, where $ω$ is the angular frequency of the revolution and sets the scale of supersymmetry breaking. This cancellation suggests a possibility to solve the hierarchy problem of the Higgs mass in high scale supersymmetry breaking models.

A new dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking with classically scale invariance

We propose a new dynamics of the electroweak symmetry breaking in a classically scale invariant version of the standard model. The scale invariance is broken by the condensations of additional fermions under a strong coupling dynamics. The electroweak symmetry breaking is triggered by negative mass squared of the elementary Higgs doublet, which is dynamically generated through the bosonic seesaw mechanism. We introduce a real pseudo-scalar singlet field interacting with additional fermions and Higgs doublet in order to avoid massless Nambu-Goldstone bosons from the chiral symmetry breaking in a strong coupling sector. We investigate the mass spectra and decay rates of these pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons, and show they can decay fast enough without cosmological problems. We further evaluate the energy dependences of the couplings between elementary fields perturbatively, and find that our model is the first one which realizes the flatland scenario with the dimensional transmutation by the strong coupling dynamics. Similarly to the conventional flatland model with Coleman-Weinberg mechanism, the electroweak vacuum in our model is meta-stable.

Constraints on gauge-Higgs unification models at the LHC

We examine the possibility of observing the Kaluza-Klein gluons in gauge-Higgs unification models at the LHC with the energy sqrt{s}=14 TeV. We consider a benchmark model with the gauge symmetry SU(3)_C x SU(3)_W in five-dimensional space-time, where SU(3)_C is the gauge symmetry of the strong interaction and SU(3)_W is that for the electroweak interaction and a Higgs doublet field. It is natural in general to introduce SU(3)_C gauge symmetry in five-dimensional space-time as well as SU(3)_W gauge symmetry in gauge-Higgs unification models. Since the fifth dimension is compactified to S1/Z2 orbifold, there are Kaluza-Klein modes of gluons in low-energy effective theory in four-dimensional space-time. We investigate the resonance contribution of the first Kaluza-Klein gluon to dijet invariant mass distribution at the LHC, and provide signal-to-noise ratios in various cases of Kaluza-Klein gluon masses and kinematical cuts. Although the results are given in a specific benchmark model, we discuss their application to general gauge-Higgs unification models with Kaluza-Klein gluons. Gauge-Higgs unification models can be verified or constrained through the physics of the strong interaction, though they are proposed to solve the naturalness problem in electroweak symmetry breaking.

Revolving D-branes and Spontaneous Gauge Symmetry Breaking

We propose a new mechanism of spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking in the world-volume theory of revolving D-branes around a fixed point of orbifolds. In this paper, we consider a simple model of the T6/Z3 orbifold on which we put D3-branes, D7-branes and their anti-branes. The configuration breaks supersymmetry, but the R-R tadpole cancellation conditions are satisfied. A set of three D3-branes at an orbifold fixed point can separate from the point, but when they move perpendicular to the anti-D7-branes put on the fixed point, they are forced to be pulled back due to an attractive interaction between the D3 and anti-D7 branes. In order to stabilize the separation of the D3-branes at nonzero distance, we consider revolution of the D3-branes around the fixed point. Then the gauge symmetry on D3-branes is spontaneously broken, and the rank of the gauge group is reduced. The distance can be set at our will by appropriately choosing the angular momentum of the revolving D3-branes, which should be determined by the initial condition of the cosmological evolution of D-brane configurations. The distance corresponds to the vacuum expectation values of brane moduli fields in the world-volume theory and, if it is written as M/Ms^2 in terms of the string scale Ms, the scale of gauge symmetry breaking is given by M. Angular momentum conservation of revolving D3-branes assures the stability of the scale M against Ms.

Towards the stabilization of extra dimensions by brane dynamics

All the models of elementary particles and their interactions derived from String Theory involve a compact six-dimensional internal space. Its volume and shape should be fixed or stabilized, since otherwise massless scalar fields (moduli) reflecting their deformations appear in our four-dimensional space-time, with sizable effects on known particles and fields. We propose a strategy towards stabilizing the compact space without fluxes of three-form fields from closed strings. Our main motivation and goal is to proceed insofar as possible within conventional string world-sheet theory. As we shall see, D-branes with magnetic flux ("magnetized D-branes") and the forces between them can be used to this end. We investigate here some necessary ingredients: open string one-loop vacuum amplitudes between magnetized D-branes, magnetized D-branes fixed at orbifold singularities, and potential energies among such D-branes in the compact space that result from tree-level closed string exchanges.

Detectability of the second resonance of low-scale string models at the LHC

Low-scale string models are phenomenological models in String Theory, in which the string scale M_s is of the order of TeV. String excited states which are characteristic modes in low-scale string models can be observed as resonances in dijet invariant mass distributions at the LHC. If a new heavy resonance is discovered at the LHC, it is important to investigate whether the resonance comes from low-scale string models. In this work, two analyses are performed: One is observing higher spin degeneracy of string excited states by an angular distribution analysis on the resonance, since the string resonance consists of several degenerate states with different spins. The other is observing second string excited states by a search for a second resonance in dijet invariant mass distributions, since second string excited states have characteristic masses of sqrt{2} times of masses of first string excited states. As the result of Monte Carlo simulations assuming the 14 TeV LHC, we give required luminosities for 5 sigma confirmation in each analysis, in case of M_s = 4.5, 4.75 and 5 TeV.

Signatures of low-scale string models at the LHC

Low-scale string models, in which the string scale M_s is of the order of TeV with large extra dimensions, can solve the problems of scale hierarchy and non-renormalizable quantum gravity in the standard model. String excited states of the standard model particles are possibly observed as resonances in the dijet invariant mass distribution at the LHC. There are two properties to distinguish whether the resonances are due to low-scale string or some other "new physics". One is a characteristic angular distribution in dijet events at the resonance due to spin degeneracy of string excited states, and the other is an appearance of the second resonance at a characteristic mass of second string excited states. We investigate a possibility to observe these evidences of low-scale string models by Monte Carlo simulations with a reference value of M_s = 4 TeV at sqrt{s} = 14 TeV. It is shown that spin degeneracy at the dijet resonance can be observed by looking the chi-distribution with integrated luminosity of 20 fb^-1. It is shown that the second resonance can be observed at rather close to the first resonance in the dijet invariant mass distribution with integrated luminosity of 50 fb^-1. These are inevitable signatures of low-scale string models.

Spontaneous Gauge Symmetry Breaking in a Non-Supersymmetric D-brane Model

We investigate a D-brane system in which spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking occurs. The system consists of four D3-branes and three anti-D7-branes at C^3/Z_3 singularity. The singularity is blown up by vacuum expectation values of the states of twisted closed string, whose effects appear as Fayet-Iliopoulos terms in low-energy effective field theory. We derive an effective potential for scalar fields in four-dimensional effective field theory using the technique of superstring world-sheet theory. Since there is no supersymmetry in this system, one-loop masses for some scalar fields are considered. We find some stationary and stable vacua in which the original U(2) x U(1)_1 x U(1)_2 x U(3) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken to U(1) x U(1)' x U(3) gauge symmetry. Both Fayet-Iliopoulos terms and one-loop masses are necessary for the existence of such vacua. We carefully investigate a geometrical aspect of the gauge symmetry breaking. We show that the gauge symmetry breaking is understood as the separation of D3-branes. Some implications to the possibility of low-scale string models are also discussed.

A closer look at string resonances in dijet events at the LHC

The first string excited state can be observed as a resonance in dijet invariant mass distributions at the LHC, if the scenario of low-scale string with large extra dimensions is realized. A distinguished property of the dijet resonance by string excited states from that the other "new physics" is that many almost degenerate states with various spin compose a single resonance structure. It is examined that how we can obtain evidences of low-scale string models through the analysis of angular distributions of dijet events at the LHC. Some string resonance states of color singlet can obtain large mass shifts through the open string one-loop effect, or through the mixing with closed string states, and the shape of resonance structure can be distorted. Although the distortion is not very large (10% for the mass squared), it might be able to observe the effect at the LHC, if gluon jets and quark jets could be distinguished in a certain level of efficiency.

Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in String Models with D-branes

The possibility of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking by strong coupling gauge interaction in models with D-branes in String Theory is examined. Instead of elementary scalar Higgs doublet fields, the gauge symmetry with strong coupling (technicolor) is introduced. As the first step of this direction, a toy model, which is not fully realistic, is concretely analyzed in some detail. The model consists of D-branes and anti-D-branes at orbifold singularities in (T^2 x T^2 x T^2)/Z_3 which preserves supersymmetry. Supersymmetry is broken through the brane supersymmetry breaking. It is pointed out that the problem of large S parameter in dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking scenario may be solved by natural existence of kinetic term mixings between hypercharge U(1) gauge boson and massive anomalous U(1) gauge bosons. The problems to be solved toward constructing more realistic models are clarified in the analysis.

One-loop masses of open-string scalar fields in String Theory

In phenomenological models with D-branes, there are in general open-string massless scalar fields, in addition to closed-string massless moduli fields corresponding to the compactification. It is interesting to focus on the fate of such scalar fields in models with broken supersymmetry, because no symmetry forbids their masses. The one-loop effect may give non-zero masses to them, and in some cases mass squared may become negative, which means the radiative gauge symmetry breaking. In this article we investigate and propose a simple method for calculating the one-loop corrections using the boundary state formalism. There are two categories of massless open-string scalar fields. One consists the gauge potential fields corresponding to compactified directions, which can be understood as scalar fields in uncompactified space-time (related with Wilson line degrees of freedom). The other consists "gauge potential fields" corresponding to transverse directions of D-brane, which emerge as scalar fields in D-brane world-volume (related with brane moduli fields). The D-brane boundary states with constant backgrounds of these scalar fields are constructed, and one-loop scalar masses are calculated in the closed string picture. Explicit calculations are given in the following four concrete models: one D25-brane with a circle compactification in bosonic string theory, one D9-brane with a circle compactification in superstring theory, D3-branes at a supersymmetric C^3/Z_3 orbifold singularity, and a model of brane supersymmetry breaking with D3-branes and anti-D7-branes at a supersymmetric C^3/Z_3 orbifold singularity. We show that the sign of the mass squared has a strong correlation with the sign of the related open-string one-loop vacuum amplitude.

Yukawa Coupling Structure in Intersecting D-brane Models

The structure of Yukawa coupling matrices is investigated in type IIA T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2) orientifold models with intersecting D-branes. Yukawa coupling matrices are difficult to be realistic in the conventional models in which the generation structure emerges by the multiple intersection of D-branes in the factorized T^6 = T^2 x T^2 x T^2. We study the new type of flavor structure, where Yukawa couplings are dynamically generated, and show this type of models lead to nontrivial structures of Yukawa coupling matrices, which can be realistic.

Dynamical Generation of Yukawa Couplings in Intersecting D-brane Models

We propose a scenario to obtain non-trivial Yukawa coupling matrices for the quark-lepton mass generation in supersymmetric intersecting D-brane models in type IIA T^6/Z_2 x Z_2 orientifold. As an example, an explicit model is constructed in which all the four generations of quarks and leptons and two pairs of massless Higgs fields are composite. In this model non-trivial Yukawa interactions are obtained by the interplay between the string-level higher dimensional interactions among "preons" and the dynamics of the confinement of "preons".

Model independent determination of |Vub| in heavy meson effective thoery

We propose a strategy of the model-independent determination of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ within the framework of the heavy meson effective theory. The effective theory is model-independent, since no assumption on the dynamics is introduced except for the symmetry of QCD. Although the effective theory can only be applied to the decay process with soft pions, high detection efficiency on the soft pions in the future B-factories makes this theory effective. The two exclusive processes, $B \rightarrow πl ν$ and $B \rightarrow ππl ν$, are used to determine the value of $|V_{ub}|$, under the condition that the values of the decay constants of $B$ and $B^*$ mesons are given.
