Discrete-to-continuum convergence of charged particles in 1D with annihilation

We consider a system of charged particles moving on the real line driven by electrostatic interactions. Since we consider charges of both signs, collisions might occur in finite time. Upon collision, some of the colliding particles are effectively removed from the system (annihilation). The two applications we have in mind are vortices and dislocations in metals. In this paper we reach two goals. First, we develop a rigorous solution concept for the interacting particle system with annihilation. The main innovation here is to provide a careful management of the annihilation of groups of more than two particles, and we show that the definition is consistent by proving existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on initial data. The proof relies on a detailed analysis of ODE trajectories close to collision, and a reparametrization of vectors in terms of the moments of their elements. Secondly, we pass to the many-particle limit (discrete-to-continuum), and recover the expected limiting equation for the particle density. Due to the singular interactions and the annihilation rule, standard proof techniques of discrete-to-continuum limits do not apply. In particular, the framework of measures seems unfit. Instead, we use the one-dimensional feature that both the particle system and the limiting PDE can be characterized in terms of Hamilton--Jacobi equations. While our proof follows a standard limit procedure for such equations, the novelty with respect to existing results lies in allowing for stronger singularities in the particle system by exploiting the freedom of choice in the definition of viscosity solutions.

Viscosity solutions for the crystalline mean curvature flow with a nonuniform driving force term

A general purely crystalline mean curvature flow equation with a nonuniform driving force term is considered. The unique existence of a level set flow is established when the driving force term is continuous and spatially Lipschitz uniformly in time. By introducing a suitable notion of a solution a comparison principle of continuous solutions is established for equations including the level set equations. An existence of a solution is obtained by stability and approximation by smoother problems. A necessary equi-continuity of approximate solutions is established. It should be noted that the value of crystalline curvature may depend not only on the geometry of evolving surfaces but also on the driving force if it is spatially inhomogeneous.

Porous medium equation to Hele-Shaw flow with general initial density

In this paper we study the "stiff pressure limit" of the porous medium equation, where the initial density is a bounded, integrable function with a sufficient decay at infinity. Our particular model, introduced by Perthame-Quiros-Vazquez, describes the growth of a tumor zone with a restriction on the maximal cell density. In a general context, this extends previous results of Caffarelli-Vazquez and Kim who restrict the initial data to be the characteristic function of a compact set. In the limit a Hele-Shaw type problem is obtained, where the interface motion law reflects the acceleration effect of the presence of a positive cell density on the expansion of the maximal density (tumor) zone.

Homogenization of the Hele-Shaw problem in periodic spatiotemporal media

We consider the homogenization of the Hele-Shaw problem in periodic media that are inhomogeneous both in space and time. After extending the theory of viscosity solutions into this context, we show that the solutions of the inhomogeneous problem converge in the homogenization limit to the solution of a homogeneous Hele-Shaw-type problem with a general, possibly nonlinear dependence of the free boundary velocity on the gradient. Moreover, the free boundaries converge locally uniformly in Hausdorff distance.

Anisotropic total variation flow of non-divergence type on a higher dimensional torus

We extend the theory of viscosity solutions to a class of very singular nonlinear parabolic problems of non-divergence form in a periodic domain of an arbitrary dimension with diffusion given by an anisotropic total variation energy. We give a proof of a comparison principle, an outline of a proof of the stability under approximation by regularized parabolic problems, and an existence theorem for general continuous initial data, which extend the results recently obtained by the authors.

Periodic total variation flow of non-divergence type in Rn

We introduce a new notion of viscosity solutions for a class of very singular nonlinear parabolic problems of non-divergence form in a periodic domain of arbitrary dimension, whose diffusion on flat parts with zero slope is so strong that it becomes a nonlocal quantity. The problems include the classical total variation flow and a motion of a surface by a crystalline mean curvature. We establish a comparison principle, the stability under approximation by regularized parabolic problems, and an existence theorem for general continuous initial data.

Nonlinear elliptic-parabolic problems

We introduce a notion of viscosity solutions for a general class of elliptic-parabolic phase transition problems. These include the Richards equation, which is a classical model in filtration theory. Existence and uniqueness results are proved via the comparison principle. In particular, we show existence and stability properties of maximal and minimal viscosity solutions for a general class of initial data. These results are new even in the linear case, where we also show that viscosity solutions coincide with the regular weak solutions introduced in [Alt&Luckhaus 1983].

Long-time behavior of a Hele-Shaw type problem in random media

We study the long-time behavior of an exterior Hele-Shaw problem in random media with a free boundary velocity that depends on position in dimensions $n \geq 2$. A natural rescaling of solutions that is compatible with the evolution of the free boundary leads to homogenization of the free boundary velocity. By studying a limit obstacle problem for a Hele-Shaw system with a point source, we are able to show uniform convergence of the rescaled solution to a self-similar limit profile and we deduce that the rescaled free boundary uniformly approaches a sphere.

Viscosity Solutions for the two-phase Stefan Problem

We introduce a notion of viscosity solutions for the two-phase Stefan problem, which incorporates possible existence of a mushy region generated by the initial data. We show that a comparison principle holds between viscosity solutions, and investigate the coincidence of the viscosity solutions and the weak solutions defined via integration by parts. In particular, in the absence of initial mushy region, viscosity solution is the unique weak solution with the same boundary data.
