A kinetic chemotaxis model and its diffusion limit in slab geometry

Chemotaxis describes the intricate interplay of cellular motion in response to a chemical signal. We here consider the case of slab geometry which models chemotactic motion between two infinite membranes. Like previous works, we are particularly interested in the asymptotic regime of high tumbling rates. We establish local existence and uniqueness of solutions to the kinetic equation and show their convergence towards solutions of a parabolic Keller-Segel model in the asymptotic limit. In addition, we prove convergence rates with respect to the asymptotic parameter under additional regularity assumptions on the problem data. Particular difficulties in our analysis are caused by vanishing velocities in the kinetic model as well as the occurrence of boundary terms.

An asymptotic preserving hybrid-dG method for convection-diffusion equations on pipe networks

We study the numerical approximation of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems on one-dimensional pipe networks. In the vanishing diffusion limit, the number and type of boundary conditions and coupling conditions at network junctions changes, which gives rise to singular layers at the outflow boundaries of the pipes. A hybrid discontinuous Galerkin method is proposed, which provides a natural upwind mechanism for the convection-dominated case. Moreover, the method automatically handles the variable coupling and boundary conditions in the vanishing diffusion limit, leading to an asymptotic-preserving scheme. A detailed analysis of the singularities of the solution and the discretization error is presented, and an adaptive strategy is proposed, leading to order optimal error estimates that hold uniformly in the singular perturbation limit. The theoretical results are confirmed by numerical tests.

A hybrid discontinuous Galerkin method for transport equations on networks

We discuss the mathematical modeling and numerical discretization of transport problems on one-dimensional networks. Suitable coupling conditions are derived that guarantee conservation of mass across network junctions and dissipation of a mathematical energy which allows to prove existence of unique solutions. We then consider the space discretization by a hybrid discontinuous Galerkin method which provides a suitable upwind mechanism to handle the transport problem and allows to incorporate the coupling conditions in a natural manner. In addition, the method inherits mass conservation and stability of the continuous problem. Order optimal convergence rates are established and illustrated by numerical tests.

On the transport limit of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems on networks

We consider singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equations on one-dimensional networks (metric graphs) as well as the transport problems arising in the vanishing diffusion limit. Suitable coupling condition at inner vertices are derived that guarantee conservation of mass as well as dissipation of a mathematical energy which allows us to prove stability and well-posedness. For single intervals and appropriately specified initial conditions, it is well-known that the solutions of the convection-diffusion problem converge to that of the transport problem with order $O(\sqrtε)$ in the $L^\infty(L^2)$-norm with diffusion $ε\to 0$. In this paper, we prove a corresponding result for problems on one-dimensional networks. The main difficulty in the analysis is that the number and type of coupling conditions changes in the singular limit which gives rise to additional boundary layers at the interior vertices of the network. Since the values of the solution at these network junctions are not known a-priori, the asymptotic analysis requires a delicate choice of boundary layer functions that allows to handle these interior layers.
