A possible geometrical origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe

The modified geodetic brane cosmology (MGBC) is tested with observational data. The MGBC is derived from the geodetic brane gravity action corrected by the extrinsic curvature of the braneworld. The density parameter coming from this additional term produces an accelerated expansion of geometrical origin. Subject to the Supernovae Ia, Observable Hubble parameter, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmic Microwave Background probes, the obtained fit provides enough evidence in the sense that the extrinsic curvature effect is able to reproduce the accelerated expansion of the universe without need of invoking dark energy, exotic matter or cosmological constant. Moreover the MGBC is free of the problems present in other braneworld models.

On the NUT-Born-Infeld-$Λ$ spacetime

The stationary axisymmetric spacetime coupled to nonlinear Born-Infeld electrodynamics is studied. The solution was derived by Plebanski et al (1984) and it is characterized by six free parameters: mass, NUT charge, electric and magnetic charge, Born-Infeld parameter and cosmological constant. The geodesic and Lorentz force equations are integrated, and a qualitative analysis of the effect of varying the parameters in the effective potential is provided. Then the light and charged particle trajectories are discussed. The conditions that determine an extreme black hole are presented as well.

On the stability of black holes with nonlinear electromagnetic fields

The stability of three static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with nonlinear electromagnetism as a source is investigated in three different ways. We show that the specific heat of all the solutions displays an infinite discontinuity with a change of sign, but the turning point method indicates that the solutions are thermodynamically stable (much in the same way as in the case of the Reissner-Nordstrom geometry). We also show that the black holes analyzed here are dynamically stable, thus suggesting that there may be a relation between thermodynamical and dynamical stability for nonvacuum black holes.

Parameter estimation of a nonlinear magnetic universe from observations

The cosmological model consisting of a nonlinear magnetic field obeying the Lagrangian L= γF^α, F being the electromagnetic invariant, coupled to a Robertson-Walker geometry is tested with observational data of Type Ia Supernovae, Long Gamma-Ray Bursts and Hubble parameter measurements. The statistical analysis show that the inclusion of nonlinear electromagnetic matter is enough to produce the observed accelerated expansion, with not need of including a dark energy component. The electromagnetic matter with abundance $Ω_B$, gives as best fit from the combination of all observational data sets Ω_B=0.562^{+0.037}_{-0.038} for the scenario in which α=-1, Ω_B=0.654^{+0.040}_{-0.040} for the scenario with α=-1/4 and Ω_B=0.683^{+0.039}_{-0.043} for the one with α=-1/8. These results indicate that nonlinear electromagnetic matter could play the role of dark energy, with the theoretical advantage of being a mensurable field.

Observational constraints on electromagnetic Born-Infeld cosmology

The cosmological model consisting of an electromagnetic Born-Infeld (BI) field coupled to a Robertson-Walker geometry is tested with the standard probes of SNIa, GRBs and direct Hubble parameter. The analysis shows that the inclusion of the nonlinear electromagnetic component does not contribute in a significative way to the observed expansion. The BI electromagnetic matter is considered with an abundance of $Ω_{BI}$, that our best fit leads to $Ω_{BI}=0.037$ when tested with SNIa and the Hubble parameter data (0.1<z<1.75); while when tested with GRBs the result is of $Ω_{BI}=0.304$, which may indicate that this electrodynamics was important at epochs close to the appearance of large structure (redshifts of approximately 7), although this late result has not as much reliability as that corresponding to the first two probes, since we know that the dispersion in GRBs data is still considerable. In view of these results we can rule out the electromagnetic Born-Infeld matter as the origin of the present accelerated expansion, this conclusion concerns exclusively the Born-Infeld theory.

Testing a DBI model for the unification of dark matter and dark energy with Gamma-Ray Bursts

We study the range of consistency of a model based on a nonlinear scalar field Dirac-Born-Infeld action for the unification of dark matter and dark energy using Gamma-Ray Bursts at high-redshifts. We use the sample of 59 high-redshift GRBs reported by Wei (2010), calibrated at low redshifts with the Union 2 sample of SNe Ia, thus avoiding the circularity problem. In this analysis, we also include the CMB7-year data and the baryonic acoustic peak BAO. Besides, it is calculated the parameter of the equation of state $w$, the deceleration parameter $q_0$ and the redshift of the transition to the decelerate-accelerated phase $z_t$.
