Generalized explicit descent and its application to curves of genus 3

We introduce a common generalization of essentially all known methods for explicit computation of Selmer groups, which are used to bound the ranks of abelian varieties over global fields. We also simplify and extend the proofs relating what is computed to the cohomologically-defined Selmer groups. Selmer group computations have been practical for many Jacobians of curves over Q of genus up to 2 since the 1990s, but our approach is the first to be practical for general curves of genus 3. We show that our approach succeeds on some genus-3 examples defined by polynomials with small coefficients.

On congruent primes and class numbers of imaginary quadratic fields

We consider the problem of determining whether a given prime p is a congruent number. We present an easily computed criterion that allows us to conclude that certain primes for which congruency was previously undecided, are in fact not congruent. As a result, we get additional information on the possible sizes of Tate-Shafarevich groups of the associated elliptic curves. We also present a related criterion for primes p such that 16 divides the class number of the imaginary quadratic field Q(sqrt(-p)). Both results are based on descent methods. While we cannot show for either criterion individually that there are infinitely many primes that satisfy it nor that there are infinitely many that do not, we do exploit a slight difference between the two to conclude that at least one of the criteria is satisfied by infinitely many primes.

Transcendence of generating functions whose coefficients are multiplicative

In this paper, we give a new proof and an extension of the following result of Bézivin. Let $f:\B{N}\to K$ be a multiplicative function taking values in a field $K$ of characteristic 0 and write $F(z)=\sum_{n\geq 1} f(n)z^n\in K[[z]]$ for its generating series. Suppose that $F(z)$ is algebraic over $K(z)$. Then either there is a natural number $k$ and a periodic multiplicative function $χ(n)$ such that $f(n)=n^k χ(n)$ for all $n$, or $f(n)$ is eventually zero. In particular, $F(z)$ is either transcendental or rational. For $K=\B{C}$, we also prove that if $F(z)$ is a $D$-finite generating series of a multiplicative function, then $F(z)$ is either transcendental or rational.

Visualizing elements of Sha[3] in genus 2 jacobians

Mazur proved that any element xi of order three in the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve E over a number field k can be made visible in an abelian surface A in the sense that xi lies in the kernel of the natural homomorphism between the cohomology groups H^1(k,E) -> H^1(k,A). However, the abelian surface in Mazur's construction is almost never a jacobian of a genus 2 curve. In this paper we show that any element of order three in the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve over a number field can be visualized in the jacobians of a genus 2 curve. Moreover, we describe how to get explicit models of the genus 2 curves involved.

On finiteness conjectures for endomorphism algebras of abelian surfaces

It is conjectured that there exist finitely many isomorphism classes of simple endomorphism algebras of abelian varieties of GL_2-type over \Q of bounded dimension. We explore this conjecture when particularized to quaternion endomorphism algebras of abelian surfaces by giving a moduli interpretation which translates the question into the diophantine arithmetic of Shimura curves embedded in Hilbert surfaces. We address the resulting problems on these curves by local and global methods, including Chabauty techniques on explicit equations of Shimura curves.

Visualising Sha[2] in Abelian Surfaces

Given an elliptic curve E1 over a number field and an element s in its 2-Selmer group, we give two different ways to construct infinitely many Abelian surfaces A such that the homogeneous space representing s occurs as a fibre of A over another elliptic curve E2. We show that by comparing the 2-Selmer groups of E1, E2 and A, we can obtain information about Sha(E1/K)[2] and we give examples where we use this to obtain a sharp bound on the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic curve. As a tool, we give a precise description of the m-Selmer group of an Abelian surface A that is m-isogenous to a product of elliptic curves E1 x E2. One of the constructions can be applied iteratively to obtain information about Sha(E1/K)[2^n]. We give an example where we use this iterated application to exhibit an element of order 4 in Sha(E1/Q).
