The closeness of localised structures between the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice and Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equations II: Generalised AL and DNLS systems

The Ablowitz-Ladik system, being one of the few integrable nonlinear lattices, admits a wide class of analytical solutions, ranging from exact spatially localised solitons to rational solutions in the form of the spatiotemporally localised discrete Peregrine soliton. Proving a closeness result between the solutions of the Ablowitz-Ladik and a wide class of Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger systems in a sense of a continuous dependence on their initial data, we establish that such small amplitude waveforms may be supported in the nonintegrable lattices, for significant large times. The nonintegrable systems exhibiting such behavior include a generalisation of the Ablowitz-Ladik system with a power-law nonlinearity and the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger with power-law and saturable nonlinearities. The outcome of numerical simulations illustrates in an excellent agreement with the analytical results the persistence of small amplitude Ablowitz-Ladik analytical solutions in all the nonintegrable systems considered in this work, with the most striking example being that of the Peregine soliton.

The closeness of the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice to the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation

While the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice is integrable, the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is more significant for physical applications, is not. We prove closeness of the solutions of both systems in the sense of a "continuous dependence" on their initial data in the $l^2$ and $l^{\infty}$ metrics. The most striking relevance of the analytical results is that small amplitude solutions of the Ablowitz-Ladik system persist in the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger one. It is shown that the closeness results are also valid in higher dimensional lattices as well as for generalised nonlinearities. For illustration of the applicability of the approach, a brief numerical study is included, showing that when the 1-soliton solution of the Ablowitz-Ladik system is initiated in the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger system with cubic and saturable nonlinearity, it persists for long-times. Thereby excellent agreement of the numerical findings with the theoretical predicti ions is obtained.

The Lefever-Lejeune nonlinear lattice: convergence dynamics and the structure of equilibrium states

We consider the Lefever-Lejeune nonlinear lattice, a spatially discrete propagation-inhibition model describing the growth of vegetation densities in dry-lands. We analytically identify parametric regimes distinguishing between decay (associated with spatial extinction of vegetation patches) and potentially non-trivial time-asymptotics. To gain insight on the convergence dynamics, a stability analysis of spatially uniform states is performed, revealing the existence of a threshold for the discretization parameter which depends on the lattice parameters, below which their destabilization occurs and spatially non-uniform equilibrium states may emerge. Direct numerical simulations justified that the analytical stability criteria and parametric thresholds effectively describe the above transition dynamics and revealed the rich structure of the equilibrium set. Connections with the continuous sibling Lefever-Lejeune partial differential equation are also discussed.

Self trapping transition for a nonlinear impurity within a linear chain

In the present work we revisit the issue of the self-trapping dynamical transition at a nonlinear impurity embedded in an otherwise linear lattice. For our Schrödinger chain example, we present rigorous arguments that establish necessary conditions and corresponding parametric bounds for the transition between linear decay and nonlinear persistence of a defect mode. The proofs combine a contraction mapping approach applied in the fully dynamical problem in the case of a 3D-lattice, together with variational arguments for the derivation of parametric bounds for the creation of stationary states associated with the expected fate of the self-trapping dynamical transition. The results are relevant for both power law nonlinearities and saturable ones. The analytical results are corroborated by numerical computations.

A new sharp estimate on the dimension of the attractor for the Dirichlet problem of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation

Using the improved lower bound on the sum of the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian proved by A. D. Melas (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. \textbf{131} (2003) 631-636), we report a new and sharp estimate for the dimension of the global attractor associated to the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation supplemented with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
