One-dimensional Carrollian fluids II: $C^1$ blow-up criteria

The Carrollian fluid equations arise from the equations for relativistic fluids in the limit as the speed of light vanishes, and have recently experienced a surge of interest in the theoretical physics community in the context of asymptotic symmetries and flat-space holography. In this paper we initiate the rigorous systematic analysis of these equations by studying them in one space dimension in the $C^1$ setting. We begin by proposing a notion of isentropic Carrollian equations, and use this to reduce the Carrollian equations to a $2 \times 2$ system of conservation laws. Using the scheme of Lax, we then classify when $C^1$ solutions to the isentropic Carrollian equations exist globally, or blow up in finite time. Our analysis assumes a Carrollian analogue of a constitutive relation for the Carrollian energy density, with exponent in the range $γ\in (1,3]$.

A scale-critical trapped surface formation criterion for the Einstein-Maxwell system

In this study we show that, from arbitrarily dispersed initial data, both the concentration of electromagnetic fields and the focusing of gravitational waves could lead to the formation of trapped surfaces. We establish a scale-critical semi-global existence result from the past null infinity for the Einstein-Maxwell system by assigning the signature for decay rates to geometric quantities and Maxwell components. This result generalizes an approach of the first author on studying Einstein vacuum equations by employing additional elliptic estimates and geometric renormalizations, and it also extends a result of Yu to the scale-critical regime.

Construction of Cauchy data for the dynamical formation of apparent horizons and the Penrose Inequality

Based on scale critical initial data, we construct smooth asymptotically flat Cauchy initial data for the Einstein vacuum system that does not contain Marginally Outer Trapped Surfaces (MOTS) but whose future evolution contains a trapped region, which itself is bounded by an apparent horizon (a smooth hypersurface foliated by MOTS). Although the long time behaviour of these solutions is unknown, a statement of Kerr Stability would yield a dynamical, scale critical, non-spherically symmetric class of vacuum examples for the conjectures of Weak Cosmic Censorship and Final State. Owing to estimates obtained for the ADM mass of the data and the area of the MOTS foliating the apparent horizon, this construction yields a dynamical setting in which to test the conjectured spacetime Penrose Inequality. We show that the inequality holds in an open region in the future of the initial data, which itself can be controlled by the parameters of the initial data.
