A minimising movement scheme for the $p$-elastic energy of curves

We prove short-time existence for the negative $L^2$-gradient flow of the $p$-elastic energy of curves via a minimising movement scheme. In order to account for the degeneracy caused by the energy's invariance under curve reparametrisations, we write the evolving curves as approximate normal graphs over a fixed smooth curve. This enables us to establish short-time existence and give a lower bound on the solution's lifetime that depends only on the $W^{2,p}$-Sobolev norm of the initial data.

On the Analyticity of Critical Points of the Generalized Integral Menger Curvature in the Hilbert Case

We prove the analyticity of smooth critical points for generalized integral Menger curvature energies $\mathrm{intM}^{(p,2)}$, with $p \in (\tfrac 73, \tfrac 83)$, subject to a fixed length constraint. This implies, together with already well-known regularity results, that finite-energy, critical $C^1$-curves $γ: \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{R}^n$ of generalized integral Menger curvature $\mathrm{intM}^{(p,2)}$ subject to a fixed length constraint are not only $C^\infty$ but also analytic. Our approach is inspired by analyticity results on critical points for O'Hara's knot energies based on Cauchy's method of majorants and a decomposition of the first variation. The main new idea is an additional iteration in the recursive estimate of the derivatives to obtain a sufficient difference in the order of regularity.

On the regularity of critical points for O'Hara's knot energies: From smoothness to analyticity

We prove the analyticity of smooth critical points for O'Hara's knot energies $\mathcal{E}^{α,p}$, with $p=1$ and $2<α< 3$, subject to a fixed length constraint. This implies, together with the main result in \cite{BR13}, that bounded energy critical points of $\mathcal{E}^{α,1}$ subject to a fixed length constraint are not only $C^\infty$ but also analytic. Our approach is based on Cauchy's method of majorants and a decomposition of the gradient that was adapted from the Möbius energy case $\mathcal{E}^{2,1}$ in \cite{BV19}.
