Policy stability and ultimate stationarity in discounted risk-sensitive stochastic control

We study discrete-time Markov Decision Processes (MDPs) on finite state-action spaces and analyze the stability of optimal policies and value functions in the long-run discounted risk-sensitive objective setting. Our analysis addresses robustness with respect to perturbations of the risk-aversion parameter and the discount factor, the emergence of ultimate stationarity, and the interaction between discounted and averaged formulations under suitable mixing assumptions. We further investigate limiting regimes associated with vanishing discount and vanishing risk sensitivity, and discuss the role of Blackwell-type stability properties in the discounted setting. Finally, we provide numerical illustrations that highlight the intrinsic non-stationarity of optimal discounted risk-sensitive policies.

Martingale Optimal Transport in the Discrete Case Via Simple Linear Programming Techniques

We consider the problem of finding consistent upper price bounds and super replication strategies for exotic options, given the observation of call prices in the market. This field of research is called model-independent finance and has been introduced by Hobson 1998. Here we use the link to mass transport problems. In contrast to existing literature we assume that the marginal distributions at the two time points we consider are discrete probability distributions. This has the advantage that the optimization problems reduce to linear programs and can be solved rather easily when assuming a general martingale Spence Mirrlees condition. We will prove the optimality of left-monotone transport plans under this assumption and provide an algorithm for its construction. Our proofs are simple and do not require much knowledge of probability theory. At the end we present an example to illustrate our approach.

Risk-Sensitive Dividend Problems

We consider a discrete-time version of the popular optimal dividend pay-out problem in risk theory. The novel aspect of our approach is that we allow for a risk averse insurer, i.e., instead of maximising the expected discounted dividends until ruin we maximise the expected utility of discounted dividends until ruin. This task has been proposed as an open problem in H. Gerber and E. Shiu (2004). The model in a continuous-time Brownian motion setting with the exponential utility function has been analysed in P. Grandits, F. Hubalek, W. Schachermayer and M. Zigo (2007). Nevertheless, a complete solution has not been provided. In this work, instead we solve the problem in discrete-time setup for the exponential and the power utility functions and give the structure of optimal history-dependent dividend policies. We make use of certain ideas studied earlier in N. Bäuerle and U. Rieder (2013), where Markov decision processes with general utility functions were treated. Our analysis, however, include new aspects, since the reward functions in this case are not bounded.
