On the classification of low-degree ovoids of Q(4,q)

Ovoids of the non-degenerate quadric Q(4,q) of PG(4,q) have been studied since the end of the '80s. They are rare objects and, beside the classical example given by an elliptic quadric, only three classes are known for q odd, one class for $q$ even, and a sporadic example for $ìq=3^5. It is well known that to any ovoid of Q(4,q) a bivariate polynomial f(x,y) can be associated. In this paper we classify ovoids of Q(4,q) whose corresponding polynomial f(x,y) has 'low degree' compared with q, in particular deg(f)<(q/6.3)^(3/13)-1. Finally, as an application, {two classes} of permutation polynomials in characteristic 3 are obtained.

On absolute points of correlations in PG$(2,q^n)$

Let $V$ be a $(d+1)$-dimensional vector space over a field $\mathbb{F}$. Sesquilinear forms over $V$ have been largely studied when they are reflexive and hence give rise to a (possibly degenerate) polarity of the $d$-dimensional projective space PG$(V)$. Everything is known in this case for both degenerate and non-degenerate reflexive forms if $\mathbb{F}$ is either ${\mathbb{R}}$, ${\mathbb{C}}$ or a finite field ${\mathbb{F}}_q$. In this paper we consider degenerate, non-reflexive sesquilinear forms of $V=\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^3$. We will see that these forms give rise to degenerate correlations of PG$(2,q^n)$ whose set of absolute points are, besides cones, the (possibly degenerate) $C_F^m$-sets. In the final section we collect some results from the huge work of B.C. Kestenband regarding what is known for the set of the absolute points of correlations in PG$(2,q^n)$ induced by a non-degenerate, non-reflexive sesquilinear form of $V=\mathbb{F}_{q^n}^3$.

Hyperovals in Knuth's binary semifield planes

In each of the three projective planes coordinatised by the Knuth's binary semifield $\mathbb{K}_n$ of order $2^n$ and two of its Knuth derivatives, we exhibit a new family of infinitely many translation hyperovals. In particular, when $n=5$, we also present complete lists of all translation hyperovals in them. The properties of some designs associated with these hyperovals are also studied.

Intriguing sets of partial quadrangles

The point-line geometry known as a \textit{partial quadrangle} (introduced by Cameron in 1975) has the property that for every point/line non-incident pair $(P,\ell)$, there is at most one line through $P$ concurrent with $\ell$. So in particular, the well-studied objects known as \textit{generalised quadrangles} are each partial quadrangles. An \textit{intriguing set} of a generalised quadrangle is a set of points which induces an equitable partition of size two of the underlying strongly regular graph. We extend the theory of intriguing sets of generalised quadrangles by Bamberg, Law and Penttila to partial quadrangles, which surprisingly gives insight into the structure of hemisystems and other intriguing sets of generalised quadrangles.
