Weak Simplicial Bisimilarity and Minimisation for Polyhedral Model Checking

The work described in this paper builds on the polyhedral semantics of the Spatial Logic for Closure Spaces (SLCS) and the geometric spatial model checker PolyLogicA. Polyhedral models are central in domains that exploit mesh processing, such as 3D computer graphics. A discrete representation of polyhedral models is given by cell poset models, which are amenable to geometric spatial model checking on polyhedral models using the logical language SLCS$η$, a weaker version of SLCS. In this work we show that the mapping from polyhedral models to cell poset models preserves and reflects SLCS$η$. We also propose weak simplicial bisimilarity on polyhedral models and weak $\pm$-bisimilarity on cell poset models, where by ``weak'' we mean that the relevant equivalence is coarser than the corresponding one for SLCS, leading to a greater reduction of the size of models and thus to more efficient model checking. We show that the proposed bisimilarities enjoy the Hennessy-Milner property, i.e. two points are weakly simplicial bisimilar iff they are logically equivalent for SLCS$η$. Similarly, two cells are weakly $\pm$-bisimilar iff they are logically equivalent in the poset-model interpretation of SLCS$η$. Furthermore we present a model minimisation procedure and prove that it correctly computes the minimal model with respect to weak $\pm$-bisimilarity, i.e. with respect to logical equivalence of SLCS$η$. The procedure works via an encoding into LTSs and then exploits branching bisimilarity on those LTSs, exploiting the minimisation capabilities as included in the mCRL2 toolset. Various examples show the effectiveness of the approach.

Admissibility of $Π_2$-Inference Rules: interpolation, model completion, and contact algebras

We devise three strategies for recognizing admissibility of non-standard inference rules via interpolation, uniform interpolation, and model completions. We apply our machinery to the case of symmetric implication calculus $\mathsf{S^2IC}$, where we also supply a finite axiomatization of the model completion of its algebraic counterpart, via the equivalent theory of contact algebras. Using this result we obtain a finite basis for admissible $Π_2$-rules.

A Study of Subminimal Logics of Negation and their Modal Companions

We study propositional logical systems arising from the language of Johansson's minimal logic and obtained by weakening the requirements for the negation operator. We present their semantics as a variant of neighbourhood semantics. We use duality and completeness results to show that there are uncountably many subminimal logics. We also give model-theoretic and algebraic definitions of filtration for minimal logic and show that they are dual to each other. These constructions ensure that the propositional minimal logic has the finite model property. Finally, we define and investigate bi-modal companions with non-normal modal operators for some relevant subminimal systems, and give infinite axiomatizations for these bi-modal companions.

Diego's Theorem for nuclear implicative semilattices

We prove that the variety of nuclear implicative semilattices is locally finite, thus generalizing Diego's Theorem. The key ingredients of our proof include the coloring technique and construction of universal models from modal logic. For this we develop duality theory for finite nuclear implicative semilattices, generalizing Köhler duality. We prove that our main result remains true for bounded nuclear implicative semilattices, give an alternative proof of Diego's Theorem, and provide an explicit description of the free cyclic nuclear implicative semilattice.

Minimisation in Logical Form

Stone-type dualities provide a powerful mathematical framework for studying properties of logical systems. They have recently been fruitfully explored in understanding minimisation of various types of automata. In Bezhanishvili et al. (2012), a dual equivalence between a category of coalgebras and a category of algebras was used to explain minimisation. The algebraic semantics is dual to a coalgebraic semantics in which logical equivalence coincides with trace equivalence. It follows that maximal quotients of coalgebras correspond to minimal subobjects of algebras. Examples include partially observable deterministic finite automata, linear weighted automata viewed as coalgebras over finite-dimensional vector spaces, and belief automata, which are coalgebras on compact Hausdorff spaces. In Bonchi et al. (2014), Brzozowski's double-reversal minimisation algorithm for deterministic finite automata was described categorically and its correctness explained via the duality between reachability and observability. This work includes generalisations of Brzozowski's algorithm to Moore and weighted automata over commutative semirings. In this paper we propose a general categorical framework within which such minimisation algorithms can be understood. The goal is to provide a unifying perspective based on duality. Our framework consists of a stack of three interconnected adjunctions: a base dual adjunction that can be lifted to a dual adjunction between coalgebras and algebras and also to a dual adjunction between automata. The approach provides an abstract understanding of reachability and observability. We illustrate the general framework on range of concrete examples, including deterministic Kripke frames, weighted automata, topological automata (belief automata), and alternating automata.

Canonical formulas for k-potent commutative, integral, residuated lattices

Canonical formulas are a powerful tool for studying intuitionistic and modal logics. Actually, they provide a uniform and semantic way to axiomatise all extensions of intuitionistic logic and all modal logics above K4. Although the method originally hinged on the relational semantics of those logics, recently it has been completely recast in algebraic terms. In this new perspective canonical formulas are built from a finite subdirectly irreducible algebra by describing completely the behaviour of some operations and only partially the behaviour of some others. In this paper we export the machinery of canonical formulas to substructural logics by introducing canonical formulas for $k$-potent, commutative, integral, residuated lattices ($k$-$\mathsf{CIRL}$). We show that any subvariety of $k$-$\mathsf{CIRL}$ is axiomatised by canonical formulas. The paper ends with some applications and examples.

Games for Topological Fixpoint Logic

Topological fixpoint logics are a family of logics that admits topological models and where the fixpoint operators are defined with respect to the topological interpretations. Here we consider a topological fixpoint logic for relational structures based on Stone spaces, where the fixpoint operators are interpreted via clopen sets. We develop a game-theoretic semantics for this logic. First we introduce games characterising clopen fixpoints of monotone operators on Stone spaces. These fixpoint games allow us to characterise the semantics for our topological fixpoint logic using a two-player graph game. Adequacy of this game is the main result of our paper. Finally, we define bisimulations for the topological structures under consideration and use our game semantics to prove that the truth of a formula of our topological fixpoint logic is bisimulation-invariant.

Duality and universal models for the meet-implication fragment of IPC

In this paper we investigate the fragment of intuitionistic logic which only uses conjunction (meet) and implication, using finite duality for distributive lattices and universal models. We give a description of the finitely generated universal models of this fragment and give a complete characterization of the up-sets of Kripke models of intuitionistic logic which can be defined by meet-implication-formulas. We use these results to derive a new version of subframe formulas for intuitionistic logic and to show that the uniform interpolants of meet-implication-formulas are not necessarily uniform interpolants in the full intuitionistic logic.

Finitely generated free Heyting algebras via Birkhoff duality and coalgebra

Algebras axiomatized entirely by rank 1 axioms are algebras for a functor and thus the free algebras can be obtained by a direct limit process. Dually, the final coalgebras can be obtained by an inverse limit process. In order to explore the limits of this method we look at Heyting algebras which have mixed rank 0-1 axiomatizations. We will see that Heyting algebras are special in that they are almost rank 1 axiomatized and can be handled by a slight variant of the rank 1 coalgebraic methods.
