Fuzzballs and Microstate Geometries: Black-Hole Structure in String Theory

The black-hole information paradox provides one of the sharpest foci for the conflict between quantum mechanics and general relativity and has become the proving-ground of would-be theories of quantum gravity. String theory has made significant progress in resolving this paradox, and has led to the fuzzball and microstate geometry programs. The core principle of these programs is that horizons and singularities only arise if one tries to describe gravity using a theory that has too few degrees of freedom to resolve the physics. String theory has sufficiently many degrees of freedom and this naturally leads to fuzzballs and microstate geometries: The reformation of black holes into objects with neither horizons nor singularities. This not only resolves the paradox but provides new insights into the microstructure of black holes. We summarize the current status of this approach and describe future prospects and additional insights that are now within reach. This paper is an expanded version of our Snowmass White Paper arXiv:2203.04981.

Snowmass White Paper: Micro- and Macro-Structure of Black Holes

The black-hole information paradox provides a stringent test of would-be theories of quantum gravity. String theory has made significant progress toward a resolution of this paradox, and has led to the fuzzball and microstate geometry programs. The central thesis of these programs is that only string theory has sufficiently many degrees of freedom to resolve black-hole microstructure, and that horizons and singularities are artifacts of attempting to describe gravity using a theory that has too few degrees of freedom to resolve the physics. Fuzzballs and microstate geometries recast black holes within string theory as horizonless and singularity-free objects that not only resolve the paradox but provide new insight into the underlying microstructure. We give an overview of this approach, summarize its current status and describe future prospects and insights that are now within reach.

Lectures on Microstate Geometries

These are notes for some introductory lectures about microstate geometries and their construction. The first lecture considers BPS black holes in four dimensions as a way to introduce what one should expect from the BPS equations. The second lecture discusses the "no solitons without topology" theorem. The subsequent lectures move on to the construction and properties of bubbled microstate geometries in five dimensions. Since these are graduate lectures, they involve a strongly computational narrative intended to build some proficiency and understanding of supersymmetric solitons in five-dimensions. The narrative also regularly "plays tourist" pointing to specific features that are more general or have broader impact. The last sections contain brief comments on the larger setting of microstate geometries and describe some of the more recent developments. These lectures were given as a mini-course at the IPhT, Saclay in May, 2019.

Momentum Fractionation on Superstrata

Superstrata are bound states in string theory that carry D1, D5, and momentum charges, and whose supergravity descriptions are parameterized by arbitrary functions of (at least) two variables. In the D1-D5 CFT, typical three-charge states reside in high-degree twisted sectors, and their momentum charge is carried by modes that individually have fractional momentum. Understanding this momentum fractionation holographically is crucial for understanding typical black-hole microstates in this system. We use solution-generating techniques to add momentum to a multi-wound supertube and thereby construct the first examples of asymptotically-flat superstrata. The resulting supergravity solutions are horizonless and smooth up to well-understood orbifold singularities. Upon taking the AdS3 decoupling limit, our solutions are dual to CFT states with momentum fractionation. We give a precise proposal for these dual CFT states. Our construction establishes the very nontrivial fact that large classes of CFT states with momentum fractionation can be realized in the bulk as smooth horizonless supergravity solutions.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Supersymmetric Janus Solutions and Flows: From Gauged Supergravity to M Theory

We investigate a family of SU(3)$\times$U(1)$\times$U(1)-invariant holographic flows and Janus solutions obtained from gauged $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity in four dimensions. We give complete details of how to use the uplift formulae to obtain the corresponding solutions in M theory. While the flow solutions appear to be singular from the four-dimensional perspective, we find that the eleven-dimensional solutions are much better behaved and give rise to interesting new classes of compactification geometries that are smooth, up to orbifolds, in the infra-red limit. Our solutions involve new phases in which M2 branes polarize partially or even completely into M5 branes. We derive the eleven-dimensional supersymmetries and show that the eleven-dimensional equations of motion and BPS equations are indeed satisfied as a consequence of their four-dimensional counterparts. Apart from elucidating a whole new class of eleven-dimensional Janus and flow solutions, our work provides extensive and highly non-trivial tests of the recently-derived uplift formulae.

Flowing to Higher Dimensions: A New Strongly-Coupled Phase on M2 Branes

We describe a one-parameter family of new holographic RG flows that start from $AdS_4 \times S^7$ and go to $\widehat{AdS_5} \times {\cal B}_6$, where ${\cal B}_6$ is conformal to a Kähler manifold and $\widehat{AdS_5}$ is Poincaré $AdS_5$ with one spatial direction compactified and fibered over ${\cal B}_6$. The new solutions "flow up dimensions," going from the $(2+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory on M2 branes in the UV to a $(3+1)$-dimensional field theory on intersecting M5 branes in the infra-red. The M2 branes completely polarize into M5 branes along the flow and the Poincaré sections of the $\widehat{AdS_5}$ are the $(3+1)$-dimensional common intersection of the M5 branes. The emergence of the extra dimension in the infra-red suggests a new strongly-coupled phase of the M2 brane and ABJM theories in which charged solitons are becoming massless. The flow solution is first analyzed by finding a four-dimensional $N \! = \! 2$ supersymmetric flow in $N \! = \! 8$ gauged supergravity. This is then generalized to a one parameter family of non-supersymmetric flows. The infra-red limit of the solutions appears to be quite singular in four dimensions but the uplift to eleven-dimensional supergravity is remarkable and regular (up to orbifolding). Our construction is a non-trivial application of the recently derived uplift formulae for fluxes, going well beyond the earlier constructions of stationary points solutions. The eleven-dimensional supersymmetry is also analyzed and shows how, for the supersymmetric flow, the M2-brane supersymmetry in the UV is polarized entirely into M5-brane supersymmetry in the infra-red.

Habemus Superstratum! A constructive proof of the existence of superstrata

We construct the first example of a superstratum: a class of smooth horizonless supergravity solutions that are parameterized by arbitrary continuous functions of (at least) two variables and have the same charges as the supersymmetric D1-D5-P black hole. We work in Type IIB string theory on T^4 or K3 and our solutions involve a subset of fields that can be described by a six-dimensional supergravity with two tensor multiplets. The solutions can thus be constructed using a linear structure, and we give an explicit recipe to start from a superposition of modes specified by an arbitrary function of two variables and impose regularity to obtain the full horizonless solutions in closed form. We also give the precise CFT description of these solutions and show that they are not dual to descendants of chiral primaries. They are thus much more general than all the known solutions whose CFT dual is precisely understood. Hence our construction represents a substantial step toward the ultimate goal of constructing the fully generic superstratum that can account for a finite fraction of the entropy of the three-charge black hole in the regime of parameters where the classical black hole solution exists.

Black-Hole Entropy from Supergravity Superstrata States

There are, by now, several arguments that superstrata, which represent D1-D5-P bound states that depend upon arbitrary functions of two variables and that preserve four supersymmetries, exist in string theory, and that their gravitational back-reaction results in smooth horizonless solutions. In this paper we examine the shape and density modes of the superstratum and give strong evidence that the back-reacted supergravity solution allows for fluctuation modes whose quantization reproduces the entropy growth of black holes as a function of the charges. In particular, we argue that the shape modes of the superstratum that lie purely within the non-compact space-time directions account for at least $1/\sqrt{6}$ of the entropy of the D1-D5-P black hole and propose a way in which the rest of the entropy could be captured by superstratum fluctuations. We complete the picture by conjecturing a relationship between bound states of multiple superstrata and momentum excitations of different twisted sectors of the dual CFT.

On the Oscillation of Species

We describe a new class of BPS objects called magnetubes: their supersymmetry is determined by their magnetic charges, while their electric charges can oscillate freely between different species. We show how to incorporate these objects into microstate geometries and create BPS solutions in which the charge densities rotate through different U(1) species as one moves around a circle within the microstate geometry. Our solutions have the same "time-like" supersymmetry as five-dimensional, three-charge black holes but, in various parts of the solution, the supersymmetry takes the "null" form that is normally associated with magnetic charges. It is this property that enables the species oscillation of magnetubes to be compatible with supersymmetry. We give an example in which the species oscillate non-trivially around a circle within a microstate geometry, and yet the energy-momentum tensor and metric are completely independent of this circle: only the amplitude of the oscillation influences the metric.

Almost BPS but still not renormalized

A key feature of BPS multi-center solutions is that the equations controlling the positions of these centers are not renormalized as one goes from weak to strong coupling. In particular, this means that brane probes can capture the same information as the fully back-reacted supergravity solution. We investigate this non-renormalization property for non-supersymmetric, extremal "almost-BPS" solutions at intermediate coupling when one of the centers is considered as a probe in the background created by the other centers. We find that despite the lack of supersymmetry, the probe action reproduces exactly the equations underlying the fully back-reacted solution, which indicates that these equations also do not receive quantum corrections. In the course of our investigation we uncover the relation between the charge parameters of almost-BPS supergravity solutions and their quantized charges, which solves an old puzzle about the quantization of the charges of almost-BPS solutions.

Doubly-Fluctuating BPS Solutions in Six Dimensions

We analyze the BPS solutions of minimal supergravity coupled to an anti-self-dual tensor multiplet in six dimensions and find solutions that fluctuate non-trivially as a function of two variables. We consider families of solutions coming from KKM monopoles fibered over Gibbons-Hawking metrics or, equivalently, non-trivial T^2 fibrations over an R3 base. We find smooth microstate geometries that depend upon many functions of one variable, but each such function depends upon a different direction inside the T^2 so that the complete solution depends non-trivially upon the whole T^2 . We comment on the implications of our results for the construction of a general superstratum.

Multi-Superthreads and Supersheets

We obtain new BPS solutions of six-dimensional, N = 1 supergravity coupled to a tensor multiplet. These solutions are sourced by multiple "superthreads" carrying D1-D5-P charges and two magnetic dipole charges. These new solutions are sourced by multiple threads with independent and arbitrary shapes and include new shape-shape interaction terms. Because the individual superthreads can be given independent profiles, the new solutions can be smeared together into continuous "supersheets," described by arbitrary functions of two variables. The supersheet solutions have singularities like those of the three-charge, two dipole-charge generalized supertube in five dimensions and we show how such five-dimensional solutions emerge from a very simple choice of profiles. The new solutions obtained here also represent an important step in finding superstrata, which are expected to play a role in the description of black-hole microstates, due to their ability to store a large amount of entropy in their two-dimensional profile.

Resolving the Structure of Black Holes: Philosophizing with a Hammer

We give a broad conceptual review of what we have learned about black holes and their microstate structure from the study of microstate geometries and their string theory limits. We draw upon general relativity, supergravity, string theory and holographic field theory to extract universal ideas and structural features that we expect to be important in resolving the information problem and understanding the microstate structure of Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. In particular, we emphasize two conceptually and physically distinct ideas, with different underlying energy scales: a) the transition that supports the microstate structure and prevents the formation of a horizon and b) the representation of the detailed microstate structure itself in terms of fluctuations around the transitioned state. We also show that the supergravity mechanism that supports microstate geometries becomes, in the string theory limit, either brane polarization or the excitation of non-Abelian degrees of freedom. We thus argue that if any mechanism for supporting structure at the horizon scale is to be given substance within string theory then it must be some manifestation of microstate geometries.

Supersymmetric Janus Solutions in Four Dimensions

We use maximal gauged supergravity in four dimensions to construct the gravity dual of a class of supersymmetric conformal interfaces in the theory on the world-volume of multiple M2-branes. We study three classes of examples in which the $(1+1)$-dimensional defects preserve $(4,4)$, $(0,2)$ or $(0,1)$ supersymmetry. Many of the solutions have the maximally supersymmetric $AdS_4$ vacuum dual to the $\mathcal{N}=8$ ABJM theory on both sides of the interface. We also find new special classes of solutions including one that interpolates between the maximally supersymmetric vacuum and a conformal fixed point with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and $G_2$ global symmetry. We find another solution that interpolates between two distinct conformal fixed points with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and $G_2$ global symmetry. In eleven dimensions, this $G_2$ to $G_2$ solution corresponds to a domain wall across which a magnetic flux reverses orientation.

New Supersymmetric Bubbles on AdS_3xS^3

We find a large new class of explicit solutions preserving four supercharges in six-dimensional supergravity. The solutions are determined by solving a linear system of equations on a four-dimensional Kahler base studied by LeBrun. For particular choices of the parameters, we find regular backgrounds that are asymptotic to the near-horizon limit of the D1-D5-P black string. Holography implies that these backgrounds should be dual to 1/4-BPS states in the D1-D5-P CFT.

On Supersymmetric Flux Solutions of M-theory

Motivated by the geometric structures of supersymmetric holographic RG-flows, we scan for N=2 AdS_4 solutions in M-theory. One particularly well understood holographic RG flow in M-theory is dual to a mass deformation of the N=8 Chern-Simons theory. We utilize an Ansatz which is a natural generalization of this background in our scan. We find a single new solution with non-trivial internal flux and the topology of S^7. Interestingly, despite our Ansatz being quite general, within our system we rule out solutions with internal flux on more general Sasaki-Einstein seven manifolds.

Supersymmetric Solutions in Six Dimensions: A Linear Structure

The equations underlying all supersymmetric solutions of six-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity coupled to an anti-self-dual tensor multiplet have been known for quite a while, and their complicated non-linear form has hindered all attempts to systematically understand and construct BPS solutions. In this paper we show that, by suitably re-parameterizing these equations, one can find a structure that allows one to construct supersymmetric solutions by solving a sequence of linear equations. We then illustrate this method by constructing a new class of geometries describing several parallel spirals carrying D1, D5 and P charge and parameterized by four arbitrary functions of one variable. A similar linear structure is known to exist in five dimensions, where it underlies the black hole, black ring and corresponding microstate geometries. The unexpected generalization of this to six dimensions will have important applications to the construction of new, more general such geometries.

Double, Double Supertube Bubble

We argue that there exists a new class of completely smooth 1/8-BPS, three-charge bound state configurations that depend upon arbitrary functions of two variables. These configurations are locally 1/2-BPS objects in that if they form an infinite flat sheet then they preserve 16 supersymmetries but even with arbitrary two-dimensional shape modes they still preserve 4 supersymmetries. They have three electric charges and can be thought of the result of two successive supertube transitions that involve adding two independent dipole moments and giving rise to the arbitrary two-dimensional shape modes. We further argue that in the D1-D5-P duality frame this construction will give rise to smooth, horizonless solutions, or microstate geometries. We expect these solutions to be extremely important in the semi-classical and holographic descriptions of black-hole entropy.

Hair in the Back of a Throat: Non-Supersymmetric Multi-Center Solutions from Kähler Manifolds

We find a class of non-supersymmetric multi-center solutions of the STU model of five-dimensional ungauged supergravity. The solutions are determined by a system of linear equations defined on a four-dimensional Kähler manifold with vanishing Ricci scalar and a U(1) isometry. The most general class of such Kähler manifolds was studied by LeBrun and they have non-trivial 2-cycles that can support the topological fluxes characteristic of bubbled geometries. After imposing an additional U(1) symmetry on the base we find explicit multi-center supergravity solutions. We show that there is an infinite number of regular multi-center solutions with non-trivial topology that are asymptotic to the near-horizon limit of a BMPV black hole.

Imaginary Soaring Branes: A Hidden Feature of Non-Extremal Solutions

A key property of many BPS solutions of supergravity is the fact that certain probe branes placed in these solutions feel no force, essentially because electric repulsion and gravitational attraction balance one another. In this letter we show that the existence of brane probes that feel no force is also a property of many non-supersymmetric, non-extremal solutions of supergravity. This observation requires a new class of brane probes that move with constant velocity along one or several internal directions of the solution but the zero-force condition that makes the branes "float along" at constant speed, or soar, requires the velocity to be purely imaginary. While these probes are not physical, their no-force condition implies the existence of hidden relations between the warp factors and electric potentials of non-extremal solutions in certain duality frames, and this provides insight into the structure of such solutions and can greatly simplify the search for them.

Mind the Gap: Supersymmetry Breaking in Scaling, Microstate Geometries

We use a multi-species supertube solution to construct an example of a scaling microstate geometry for non-BPS black rings in five dimensions. We obtain the asymptotic charges of the microstate geometry and show how the solution is related to the corresponding non-BPS black ring. The supersymmetry is broken in a very controlled manner using holonomy and this enables a close comparison with a scaling, BPS microstate geometry. Requiring that there are no closed time-like curves near the supertubes places additional restrictions on the moduli space of physical, non-BPS solutions when compared to their BPS analogs. For large holonomy the scaling non-BPS solution always has closed time-like curves while for smaller holonomy there is a "gap" in the non-BPS moduli space relative to the BPS counterpart.

Minimal Holographic Superconductors from Maximal Supergravity

We study a truncation of four-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity that provides a realization of the minimal model of a holographic superconductor. We find various flow solutions in this truncation at zero and finite temperature with a non-trivial profile for the charged scalar. Below a critical temperature we find holographic superconductor solutions that represent the thermodynamically preferred phase. Depending on the choice of boundary conditions, the superconducting phase transition is either first or second order. For vanishing temperature we find a flow with a condensing charged scalar that interpolates between two perturbatively stable AdS_4 vacua and is the zero-temperature ground state of the holographic superconductor.

An Infinite-Dimensional Family of Black-Hole Microstate Geometries

We construct the first explicit, smooth, horizonless black-hole microstate geometry whose moduli space is described by an arbitrary function of one variable and is thus infinite-dimensional. This is achieved by constructing the scalar Green function on a simple D6 anti-D6 background, and using this Green function to obtain the fully back-reacted solution for a supertube with varying charge density in this background. We show that this supertube can store parametrically more entropy than in flat space, confirming the entropy enhancement mechanism that was predicted using brane probes. We also show that all the local properties of the fully back-reacted solution can, in fact, be obtained using the DBI action of an appropriate brane probe. In particular, the supergravity and the DBI analysis yield identical functional bubble equations that govern the relative locations of the centers. This indicates that there is a non-renormalization theorem that protects these functional equations as one moves in moduli space. Our construction creates configurations that are beyond the scope of recent arguments that appear to put strong limits on the entropy that can be found in smooth supergravity solutions.

New Supersymmetric and Stable, Non-Supersymmetric Phases in Supergravity and Holographic Field Theory

We establish analytically that the potential of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions has a new N=1 supersymmetric critical point with U(1) x U(1) symmetry. We work within a consistent N=1 supersymmetric truncation and obtain the holographic flow to this new point from the N=8 critical point. The operators that drive the flow in the dual field theory are identified and it is suggested the new critical point might represent a new conformal phase in the holographic fermion droplet models with sixteen supersymmetries. The flow also has c_{IR}/c_{UV}} = 1/2. We examine the stability of all twenty known critical points and show that the SO(3) x SO(3) point is a perturbatively stable non-supersymmetric fixed point. We also locate and describe a novel critical point that also has SO(3)\times SO(3) symmetry and is related to the previously known one by triality in a similar manner to the way that the SO(7)^\pm points are related to one another.

Supergravity Instabilities of Non-Supersymmetric Quantum Critical Points

Motivated by the recent use of certain consistent truncations of M-theory to study condensed matter physics using holographic techniques, we study the SU(3)-invariant sector of four-dimensional, N=8 gauged supergravity and compute the complete scalar spectrum at each of the five non-trivial critical points. We demonstrate that the smaller SU(4)^- sector is equivalent to a consistent truncation studied recently by various authors and find that the critical point in this sector, which has been proposed as the ground state of a holographic superconductor, is unstable due to a family of scalars that violate the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. We also derive the origin of this instability in eleven dimensions and comment on the generalization to other embeddings of this critical point which involve arbitrary Sasaki-Einstein seven manifolds. In the spirit of a resurging interest in consistent truncations, we present a formal treatment of the SU(3)-invariant sector as a U(1)xU(1) gauged N=2 supergravity theory coupled to one hypermultiplet.

Supersymmetric Charged Clouds in AdS_5

We consider supersymmetric holographic flows that involve background gauge fields dual to chemical potentials in the boundary field theory. We use a consistent truncation of gauged N=8 supergravity in five dimensions and we give a complete analysis of the supersymmetry conditions for a large family of flows. We examine how the well-known supersymmetric flow between two fixed points is modified by the presence of the chemical potentials and this yields a new, completely smooth, solution that interpolates between two global AdS spaces of different radii and with different values of the chemical potential. We also examine some black-hole-like singular flows and a new non-supersymmetric black hole solution. We comment on the interpretation of our new solutions in terms of giant gravitons and discuss the implications of our work for finding black-hole solutions in AdS geometries.

A (Running) Bolt for New Reasons

We construct a four-parameter family of smooth, horizonless, stationary solutions of ungauged five-dimensional supergravity by using the four-dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild metric as a base space and "magnetizing" its bolt. We then generalize this to a five-parameter family based upon the Euclidean Kerr-Taub-Bolt. These "running Bolt" solutions are necessarily non-static. They also have the same charges and mass as a non-extremal black hole with a classically-large horizon area. Moreover, in a certain regime their mass can decrease as their charges increase. The existence of these solutions supports the idea that the singularities of non-extremal black holes are resolved by low-mass modes that correct the singularity of the classical black hole solution on large (horizon-sized) scales.

Supergravity Solutions from Floating Branes

We solve the equations of motion of five-dimensional ungauged supergravity coupled to three U(1) gauge fields using a floating-brane Ansatz in which the electric potentials are directly related to the gravitational warp factors. We find a new class of non-BPS solutions, that can be obtained linearly starting from an Euclidean four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell base. This class - the largest known so far - reduces to the BPS and almost-BPS solutions in certain limits. We solve the equations explicitly when the base space is given by the Israel-Wilson metric, and obtain solutions describing non-BPS D6 and anti-D6 branes kept in equilibrium by flux. We also examine the action of spectral flow on solutions with an Israel-Wilson base and show that it relates these solutions to almost-BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base.

Entropy Enhancement and Black Hole Microstates

We study fluctuating two-charge supertubes in three-charge geometries. We show that the entropy of these supertubes is determined by their locally-defined effective charges, which differ from their asymptotic charges by terms proportional to the background magnetic fields. When supertubes are placed in deep, scaling microstate solutions, these effective charges can become very large, leading to a much larger entropy than one naively would expect. Since fluctuating supertubes source smooth geometries in certain duality frames, we propose that such an entropy enhancement mechanism might lead to a black-hole like entropy coming entirely from configurations that are smooth and horizonless in the regime of parameters where the classical black hole exists.

Microstate Geometries and Entropy Enhancement

In string theory, black-hole backgrounds are far from unique and there are large families of completely smooth, horizonless geometries with the same structure as a black hole from infinity down to the neighborhood of the black-hole horizon. These microstate geometries cap off in foam of topological bubbles. I review some of the recent progress in constructing these smooth horizonless geometries and discuss some of the physical implications.

Supertubes in Bubbling Backgrounds: Born-Infeld Meets Supergravity

We discuss two ways in which one can study two-charge supertubes as components of generic three-charge, three-dipole charge supergravity solutions. The first is using the Born-Infeld action of the supertubes, and the second is via the complete supergravity solution. Even though the Born-Infeld description is only a probe approximation, we find that it gives exactly the same essential physics as the complete supergravity solution. Since supertubes can depend on arbitrary functions, our analysis strengthens the evidence for the existence of three-charge black-hole microstate geometries that depend on an infinite set of parameters, and sets the stage for the computation of the entropy of these backgrounds. We examine numerous other aspects of supertubes in three-charge, three-dipole charge supergravity backgrounds, including chronology protection during mergers, the contribution of supertubes to the charges and angular momenta, and the enhancement of their entropy. In particular, we find that entropy enhancement affects supertube fluctuations both along the internal and the spacetime directions, and we prove that the charges that give the enhanced entropy can be much larger than the asymptotic charges of the solution. We also re-examine the embedding of five-dimensional black rings in Taub-NUT, and show that in different coordinate patches a ring can correspond to different four-dimensional black holes. Last, but not least, we show that all the three-charge black hole microstate geometries constructed so far can be embedded in AdS_3 x S^3, and hence can be related to states of the D1-D5 CFT.

Bubbling Supertubes and Foaming Black Holes

We construct smooth BPS three-charge geometries that resolve the zero-entropy singularity of the U(1) x U(1) invariant black ring. This singularity is resolved by a geometric transition that results in geometries without any branes sources or singularities but with non-trivial topology. These geometries are both ground states of the black ring, and non-trivial microstates of the D1-D5-P system. We also find the form of the geometries that result from the geometric transition of N zero-entropy black rings, and argue that, in general, such geometries give a very large number of smooth bound-state three-charge solutions, parameterized by 6N functions. The generic microstate solution is specified by a four-dimensional hyper-Kahler geometry of a certain signature, and contains a ``foam'' of non-trivial two-spheres. We conjecture that these geometries will account for a significant part of the entropy of the D1-D5-P black hole, and that Mathur's conjecture might reduce to counting certain hyper-Kahler manifolds.

A harmonic family of dielectric flow solutions with maximal supersymmetry

We construct a new harmonic family: dielectric flow solutions with maximal supersymmetry in eleven-dimensional supergravity. These solutions are asymptotically AdS_4 x S^7, while in the infra-red the M2 branes are dielectrically polarized into M5 branes. These solutions are holographically dual to vacua of the mass deformed theory on M2 branes. They also provide an interesting insight on the supergravity solutions sourced by giant gravitons, allowing one to see how supergravity solves the giant graviton puzzle.

Generalizing the N=2 supersymmetric RG flow solution of IIB supergravity

We explicitly construct the supersymmetry transformations for the N=2 supersymmetric RG flow solution of chiral IIB supergravity. We show that the metric, dilaton/axion, five-index tensor and half of the three index tensor are determined algebraically in terms of the Killing spinor of the unbroken supersymmetry. The algebraic nature of the solution allows us to generalize this construction to a new class of N=2 supersymmetric solutions of IIB supergravity. Each solution in this class is algebraically determined by supersymmetry and is parametrized by a single function of two variables that satisfies a non-linear equation akin to the Laplace equation on the space transverse to the brane.

Flowing with Eight Supersymmetries in M-Theory and F-theory

We consider holographic RG flow solutions with eight supersymmetries and study the geometry transverse to the brane. For both M2-branes and for D3-branes in F-theory this leads to an eight-manifold with only a four-form flux. In both settings there is a natural four-dimensional hyper-Kahler slice that appears on the Coulomb branch. In the IIB theory this hyper-Kahler manifold encodes the Seiberg-Witten coupling over the Coulomb branch of a U(1) probe theory. We focus primarily upon a new flow solution in M-theory. This solution is first obtained using gauged supergravity and then lifted to eleven dimensions. In this new solution, the brane probes have an Eguchi-Hanson moduli space with the M2-branes spread over the non-trivial 2-sphere. It is also shown that the new solution is valid for a class of orbifold theories. We discuss how the hyper-Kahler structure on the slice extends to some form of G-structure in the eight-manifold, and describe how this can be computed.

Orbifolds and Flows from Gauged Supergravity

We examine orbifolds of the IIB string via gauged supergravity. For the gravity duals of the A_{n-1} quiver gauge theories, we extract the massless degrees of freedom and assemble them into multiplets of N=4 gauged supergravity in five dimensions. We examine the embedding of the gauge group into the isometry group of the scalar manifold, as well as the symmetries of the scalar potential. From this we find that there is a large SU(1,n) symmetry group which relates different RG flows in the dual quiver gauge theory. We find that this symmetry implies an extension of the usual duality between ten-dimensional IIB solutions which involves exchanging geometric moduli with background fluxes.

ADE Singularities and Coset Models

We consider the compactification of the IIA string to (1+1) dimensions on non-compact 4-folds that are ALE fibrations. Supersymmetry requires that the compactification include 4-form fluxes, and a particular class of these models has been argued by Gukov, Vafa and Witten to give rise to a set of perturbed superconformal coset models that also have a Landau-Ginzburg description. We examine all these ADE models in detail, including the exceptional cosets. We identify which perturbations are induced by the deformation of the singularity, and compute the Landau-Ginzburg potentials exactly. We also show how the the Landau-Ginzburg fields and their superpotentials arise from the geometric data of the singularity, and we find that this is most naturally described in terms of non-compact, holomorphic 4-cycles.

A Class of N=1 Supersymmetric RG Flows from Five-dimensional N = 8 Supergravity

We consider the holographic dual of a general class of N=1* flows in which all three chiral multiplets have independent masses, and in which the corresponding Yang-Mills scalars can develop particular supersymmetry-preserving vevs. We also allow the gaugino to develop a vev. This leads to a six parameter subspace of the supergravity scalar action, and we show that this is a consistent truncation, and obtain a superpotential that governs the N=1* flows on this subspace. We analyse some of the structure of the superpotential, and check consistency with the asymptotic behaviour near the UV fixed point. We show that the dimensions of the six couplings obey a sum rule all along the N=1* flows. We also show how our superpotential describes part of the Coulomb branch of the non-trivial N=1 fixed point theory.

BPS Geodesics in N=2 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We introduce some techniques for making a more global analysis of the existence of geodesics on a Seiberg-Witten Riemann surface with metric $ds^2 = |λ_{SW}|^2$. Because the existence of such geodesics implies the existence of BPS states in N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, one can use these methods to study the BPS spectrum in various phases of the Yang-Mills theory. By way of illustration, we show how, using our new methods, one can easily recover the known results for the N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) pure gauge theory, and we show in detail how it also works for the N=2, SU(2) theory coupled to a massive adjoint matter multiplet.
