Suppression of the nuclear rainbow in the inelastic nucleus-nucleus scattering

The nuclear rainbow observed in the elastic $α$-nucleus and light heavy-ion scattering is proven to be due to the refraction of the scattering wave by a deep, attractive real optical potential. The nuclear rainbow pattern, established as a broad oscillation of the Airy minima in the elastic cross section, originates from an interference of the refracted far-side scattering amplitudes. It is natural to expect a similar rainbow pattern also in the inelastic scattering of a nucleus-nucleus system that exhibits a pronounced rainbow pattern in the elastic channel. Although some feature of the nuclear rainbow in the inelastic nucleus-nucleus scattering was observed in experiment, the measured inelastic cross sections exhibit much weaker rainbow pattern, where the Airy oscillation is suppressed and smeared out. To investigate this effect, a novel method of the near-far decomposition of the inelastic scattering amplitude is proposed to explicitly reveal the coupled partial-wave contributions to the inelastic cross section. Using the new decomposition method, our coupled channel analysis of the elastic and inelastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C and $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering at the refractive energies shows unambiguously that the suppression of the nuclear rainbow pattern in the inelastic scattering cross section is caused by a destructive interference of the partial waves of different multipoles. However, the inelastic scattering remains strongly refractive in these cases, where the far-side scattering is dominant at medium and large angles like that observed in the elastic scattering.

Coupled reaction channel study of the 12C(alpha,8Be) reaction, and the 8Be+8Be optical potential

Given the established 2 alpha structure of 8Be, a realistic model of 4 interacting alpha clusters must be used to obtain a 8Be+8Be interaction potential. Such a four-body problem poses a challenge for the determination of the 8Be+8Be optical potential (OP) that is still unknown due to the lack of the elastic 8Be+8Be scattering data. The main goal of the present study is to probe the complex 8Be+8Be optical potential in the coupled reaction channel (CRC) study of the alpha transfer 12C(alpha,8Be) reaction measured at 65 MeV, and to obtain the spectroscopic information on the alpha+8Be cluster configuration of 12C. The 3- and 4-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled Channel (CDCC) methods are used to calculate the elastic alpha+8Be and 8Be+8Be scattering at the energy around 16 MeV/nucleon, with the breakup effect taken into account explicitly. Using the CDCC-based OP and alpha spectroscopic factors given by the cluster model calculation, a good CRC description of the alpha transfer data without any adjustment of the (complex) potential strength.

Rearrangement term in the nonlocal folding model of the nucleon optical potential

Based on the mean-field determination of the single-particle energy in nuclear matter that contains naturally a rearrangement term (RT) implied by the Hugenholtz-van Hove theorem, the folding model of the nucleon optical potential (OP) is extended to take into account the RT using the effective, density dependent CDM3Yn interaction. With the exchange part of the nucleon folded OP treated exactly in the Hartree-Fock manner, a compact nonlocal version of the folding model is suggested in the present work to determine explicitly the isospin-dependent, nonlocal central term of the nucleon OP. To solve the optical model (OM) equation with a complex nonlocal OP, the calculable $R$-matrix method is used to analyse the elastic neutron and proton scattering on $^{40,48}$Ca, $^{90}$Zr, and $^{208}$Pb targets at low energies. The inclusion of the RT into the folding model calculation of the nonlocal nucleon OP was shown to be essential for the overall good OM description of elastic nucleon scattering. To validate the nonlocal version of the folding model, the OM results given by the nonlocal folded nucleon OP are also compared with those given by the global parametrization of the nonlocal OP using the analytical nonlocal form factor suggested by Perey and Buck.

Nuclear mean field and double-folding model of the nucleus-nucleus optical potential

Realistic density dependent CDM3Yn versions of the M3Y interaction have been used in an extended Hartree-Fock (HF) calculation of nuclear matter (NM), with the nucleon single-particle potential determined from the total NM energy based on the Hugenholtz-van Hove theorem that gives rise naturally to a rearrangement term (RT). Using the RT of the single-nucleon potential obtained exactly at different NM densities, the density- and energy dependence of the CDM3Yn interactions was modified to account properly for both the RT and observed energy dependence of the nucleon optical potential. Based on a local density approximation, the double-folding model of the nucleus-nucleus optical potential has been extended to take into account consistently the rearrangement effect and energy dependence of the nuclear mean-field potential, using the modified CDM3Yn interactions. The extended double-folding model was applied to study the elastic $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C and $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering at the refractive energies, where the Airy structure of the nuclear rainbow has been well established. The RT was found to affect significantly the real nucleus-nucleus optical potential at small internuclear distances, giving the potential strength close to that implied by the realistic optical model description of the Airy oscillation.

Folding model study of the elastic $α+ α$ scattering at low energies

The folding model analysis of the elastic $α+ α$ scattering at the incident energies below the reaction threshold of 34.7 MeV (in the lab system) has been done using the well-tested density dependent versions of the M3Y interaction and realistic choices for the $^4$He density. Because the absorption is negligible at the energies below the reaction threshold, we were able to probe the $α+ α$ optical potential at low energies quite unambiguously and found that the $α+ α$ overlap density used to construct the density dependence of the M3Y interaction is strongly distorted by the Pauli blocking. This result gives possible explanation of a long-standing inconsistency of the double-folding model in its study of the elastic $α+ α$ and $α$-nucleus scattering at low energies using the same realistic density dependent M3Y interaction.
