Configuration entropy and stability of bottomonium radial excitations in a plasma with magnetic fields

Heavy vector mesons produced in a heavy ion collision are important sources of information about the quark gluon plasma (QGP). For instance, the fraction of bottomonium states observed in such a collision is altered by the dissociation effect caused by the plasma. So, it is very important to understand how the properties of the plasma, like temperature $(T)$, density and the presence of background magnetic fields $(eB)$, affect the dissociation of bottomonium in the thermal medium. AdS/QCD holographic models provide a tool for investigating the properties of heavy mesons inside a thermal medium. The meson states are represented by quasinormal modes in a black hole geometry. In this work we calculate the quasinormal modes and the associated complex frequencies for the four lowest levels of radial excitation of bottomonium inside a plasma with a magnetic field background. We also calculate the differential configuration entropy (DCE) for all these states and investigate how the dissociation effect produced by the magnetic field is translated into a dependence of the DCE on $eB$. An interesting result obtained in this study is that the DCE increases with the radial excitation level $n$. Also, a nontrivial finding of this work is that the energy density associated with the bottomonium quasinormal modes presents a singularity near the black hole horizon for some combination of values of $T, eB$ and $n$. As we show here, it is possible to separate the singular factor and define a square integrable quantity that provides a DCE that is always finite. In addition, we discovered that, working with the potentially singular energy density, one finds a very interesting way to use the DCE as a tool for determining the dissociation temperature of the meson quasisates.

Confinement/Deconfinement temperature for a rotating quark-gluon plasma

Non-central heavy ion collisions lead to the production of a quark gluon plasma with angular momentum. We investigate, using holographic AdS/QCD models, how does rotation of the medium affects the confinement/deconfinement transition temperature $T_c$. In holographic models, this transition is represented by a Hawking-Page process involving two asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces. The plasma is represented here by extending the holographic approach to anti-de Sitter spaces with cylindrical symmetry. Then, the rotation of the medium is introduced through a Lorentz boost. We consider hard and soft wall AdS/QCD models. In both cases we find it out that, as the rotational velocity $v$ increases, $T_c$ decreases, following the expression $T_c(v) = T_c(0)/γ(v)$, where $γ(v)$ is the Lorentz factor.

Melting of heavy vector mesons and quasinormal modes in a finite density plasma from holography

In this work, we investigate the melting of charmonium states within a holographic QCD model in the context of Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theory. In the dual field theory, the model describes the heavy mesons inside a finite temperature and density medium. First, we calculate the spectrum at zero temperature. Then, at finite temperature, we obtain the spectral functions, where the heavy vector meson are represented by peaks. We show that the charmonium melts down at temperatures above the confinement/deconfinement temperature of the quark-gluon plasma. We also observe that the chemical potential speeds up the melting process. This finding is in agreement with results previously reported in the literature. In the gravitational side of the theory, we solve the perturbation equations in the hydrodynamics limit. From this result, we read off the diffusion coefficient by comparing the dispersion relation against the corresponding result obtained in the dual field theory. We also investigate the behavior of the diffusion coefficient as a function of the temperature. The perturbation equations are solved numerically, in order to get the quasinormal frequencies. We report the emergence of a new mode whose real part increases rapidly at a certain value of the chemical potential while its imaginary part decreases with the increasing of the chemical potential. Finally, by comparing against results obtained in the conformal plasma, we observe that the real part of the frequency increases, while the imaginary part decreases when we consider the non-conformal plasma.

Configuration Entropy for Quarkonium in a Finite Density Plasma

In the recent years many examples appeared in the literature where the configuration entropy (CE), introduced by Gleiser and Stamatopoulos, plays the role of an indicator of stability of physical systems. It was observed that, comparing states of the same system, the lower is the value of the CE, the more stable is the state. In this work we investigate the behaviour of the differential configuration entropy (DCE) , that is appropriate for systems with continuous degrees of freedom, in a new context. We consider quasi-states of quarkonium (a vector meson made of a heavy quark anti-quark pair) inside a plasma at finite density. It is known that the density increases the dissociation effect for quasi-particles inside a plasma. So, increasing the density of a thermal medium corresponds to reducing the stability of the quasi-particles. In order to investigate how this situation is translated in the Configutation Entropy context, we use a recently developed holographic AdS/QCD model for heavy vector mesons. The quasi-normal modes describing the quasi-states are obtained and the corresponding DCE is calculated. We find, for bottomonium and charmonium $1 S$ quasi-states, that the DCE increases with the quark density, or quark chemical potential, of the medium. This result shows that the DCE works again as an indicator of stability, represented in this case by the dissociation effect associated with the density.

Quasi normal modes for Heavy Vector Mesons in a Finite Density Plasma

There are strong indications that ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, produced in accelarators, lead to the formation of a new state of matter: the quark gluon plasma (QGP). This deconfined QCD matter is expected to exist just for very short times after the collision. All the information one can get about the plasma is obtained from the particles that reach the detectors. Among them, heavy vector mesons are particularly important. The abundance of $ c {\bar c}$ and $b {\bar b}$ states produced in a heavy ion collision is a source of information about the plasma. In contrast to the light mesons, that completely dissociate when the plasma is formed, heavy mesons presumably undergo a partial thermal dissociation. The dissociation degree depends on the temperature and also on the presence of magnetic fields and on the density (chemical potential). So, in order to get information about the plasma out of the quarkonium abundance data, one needs to resort to models that provide the dependence of the dissociation degree on these factors. Holographic phenomenological models provide a nice description for charmonium and bottomonium quasi-states in a plasma. In particular, quasi-normal modes associated with quarkonia states have been studied recently for a plasma with magnetic fields. Here we extend this analysis of quasinormal models to the case when charmonium and bottomonium are inside a plasma with finite density. The complex frequencies obtained are then compared with a Breit Wigner approximation for the peaks of the corresponding thermal spectral functions, in order to investigate the quantitative agreement of the different descriptions of quarkonium quasi-states.

Conditional entropy of glueball states

The conditional entropy of glueball states is calculated using a holographic description. Glueball states are represented by a supergravity dual picture, consisting of a 5-dimensional graviton-dilaton action of a dynamical holographic AdS/QCD model. The conditional entropy is studied as a function of the glueball spin and of the mass, providing information about the stability of the glueball states.

Decay constants in soft wall AdS/QCD revisited

Phenomenological AdS/QCD models, like hard wall and soft wall, provide hadronic mass spectra in reasonable consistency with experimental and (or) lattice results. These simple models are inspired in the AdS/CFT correspondence and assume that gauge/ gravity duality holds in a scenario where conformal invariance is broken through the introduction of an energy scale. Another important property of hadrons: the decay constant, can also be obtained from these models. However, a consistent formulation of an AdS/QCD model that reproduces the observed behavior of decay constants of vector meson excited states is still lacking. In particular: for radially excited states of heavy vector mesons, the experimental data lead to decay constants that decrease with the radial excitation level. We show here that a modified framework of soft wall AdS/QCD involving an additional dimensionfull parameter, associated with an ultraviolet energy scale, provides decay constants decreasing with radial excitation level. In this version of the soft wall model the two point function of gauge theory operators is calculated at a finite position of the anti-de Sitter space radial coordinate.

Holographic model for heavy vector meson masses

The experimentally observed spectra of heavy vector meson radial excitations show a dependence on two different energy parameters. One is associated with the quark mass and the other with the binding energy levels of the quark anti-quark pair. The first is present in the large mass of the first state while the other corresponds to the small mass splittings between radial excitations. In this article we show how to reproduce such a behavior with reasonable precision using a holographic model. In the dual picture, the large energy scale shows up from a bulk mass and the small scale comes from the position of anti-de Sitter (AdS) space where field correlators are calculated. The model determines the masses of four observed S-wave states of charmonium and six S-wave states of bottomonium with , 6.1 % rms error. In consistency with the physical picture, the large energy parameter is flavor dependent, while the small parameter, associated with quark anti-quark interaction is the same for charmonium and bottomonium states.

Holographic Picture of Heavy Vector Meson Melting

The fraction of heavy vector mesons produced in a heavy ion collision, as compared to a proton proton collision, serves as an important indication of the formation of a thermal medium, the quark gluon plasma. This sort of analysis strongly depends on understanding the thermal effects of a medium like the plasma on the states of heavy mesons. In particular, it is crucial to know the temperature ranges where they undergo a thermal dissociation, or melting. AdS/QCD models are know to provide an important tool for the calculation of hadronic masses, but in general are not consistent with the observation that decay constants of heavy vector mesons decrease with excitation level. It has recently been shown that this problem can be overcome using a soft wall background and introducing an extra energy parameter, through the calculation of correlation functions at a finite position of anti-de Sitter space. This approach leads to the evaluation of masses and decay constants of S wave quarkonium states with just one flavor dependent and one flavor independent parameters. Here we extend this more realistic model to finite temperatures and analyse the thermal behavior of the states $1S, 2S$ and $ 3S$ of bottomonium and charmonium. The corresponding spectral function exhibits a consistent picture for the melting of the states where, for each flavor, the higher excitations melt at lower temperatures. We estimate for these six states, the energy ranges in which the heavy vector mesons undergo a transition from a well defined peak in the spectral function to complete melting in the thermal medium. A very clear distinction between the heavy flavors emerges, with bottomonium state $Υ(1S)$ surviving deconfinemet transition at temperatures much larger than the critical deconfinement temperature of the medium.

Thermal width of heavy quarkonia from an AdS/QCD model

We estimate the thermal width of a heavy quark anti-quark pair inside a strongly coupled plasma using a holographic AdS/QCD model. The imaginary part of the quark potential that produces the thermal width appears in the gravity dual from quantum fluctuations of the string world sheet in the vicinity of the horizon. The results, obtained using a soft wall background that involves an infrared mass scale, are consistent with previous analisys where the mass scale was introduced by averaging over quark anti-quark states.

Anomalous dimensions from rotating open strings in AdS/CFT

We propose a new entry within the dictionary of the AdS/CFT duality at strong coupling: in the limit of a large spin or a large R-charge, the anomalous dimension of the gauge theory operator dual to a semiclassical rotating string is proportional to the string proper length. This conjecture is motivated by a generalization to strings of the rule for computing anomalous dimensions of massive particles and supergravity fields in the anti-de Sitter space. We show that this proportionality holds for a rotating closed string in global AdS space, representing a high spin operator made of fields in the adjoint representation. It is also valid for closed strings rotating in $S^5$ (representing operators with large R-charge), for closed strings with multiple AdS spin, and for giant magnons. Based on this conjecture, we calculate the anomalous dimension $δ$ of operators made of fields in the fundamental representation, associated with high spin mesons, and which are represented by rotating open strings attached to probe D7-branes. The result is a logarithmic dependence upon the spin, $δ\sim \sqrtλ\ln S$, similar to the closed string case. We show that the operator properties --- anomalous dimension and spin --- are obtained from measurements made by a local observer in the anti-de Sitter space. For the open string case, this ensures that these quantities are independent of the mass scale introduced by the D7-branes (the quark mass), as expected on physical grounds. In contrast, properties of the gauge theory states, like the energy, correspond to measurements by a gauge theory observer and depend upon the mass scale --- once again, as expected.

Vector meson quasinormal modes in a finite-temperature AdS/QCD model

We study the spectrum of vector mesons in a finite temperature plasma. The plasma is holographically described by a black hole AdS/QCD model. We compute the boundary retarded Green's function using AdS/CFT prescriptions. The corresponding thermal spectral functions show quasiparticle peaks at low temperatures. Then we calculate the quasinormal modes of vector mesons in the soft-wall black hole geometry and analyse their temperature and momentum dependences.

Generalized baryon form factors and proton structure functions in the Sakai-Sugimoto model

We investigate the production of positive parity baryon resonances in proton electromagnetic scattering within the Sakai-Sugimoto model. The latter is a string model for the non-perturbative regime of large $N_c$ QCD. Using holographic techniques we calculate the generalized Dirac and Pauli form factors that describe resonance production. We use these results to estimate the contribution of resonance production to the proton structure functions. Interestingly, we find an approximate Callan-Gross relation for the structure functions in a regime of intermediate values of the Bjorken variable.

Production of negative parity baryons in the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model

We extend our investigation of resonance production in the Sakai-Sugimoto model to the case of negative parity baryon resonances. Using holographic techniques we extract the generalized Dirac and Pauli baryon form factors as well as the helicity amplitudes for these baryonic states. Identifying the first negative parity resonance with the experimentally observed S_{11}(1535), we find reasonable agreement with experimental data from the JLab-CLAS collaboration. We also estimate the contribution of negative parity baryons to the proton structure functions.

Relativistic baryons in the Skyrme model revisited

We investigate and revisit certain aspects of relativistic baryons in the Skyrme model. Starting from static baryons in the helicity eigenstates, we generalize their wavefunctions to the non-static and relativistic regime. A new representation for gamma matrices in the SU(2) collective space is constructed and the corresponding Dirac equation is obtained. Furthermore, we extend the analysis of Adkins et al. concerning vector current vacuum expectation values for baryon states to arbitrary momenta and calculate baryon elastic form factors in a general framework exhibiting vector meson dominance.

We revisit baryons in the Skyrme model. Starting from static baryons in the helicity eigenstates, we generalize their wavefunctions to the non-static and relativistic regime. A new representation for gamma matrices in the soliton collective space is constructed and the corresponding Dirac equation is obtained. As an example, we draw consideration on how to apply this new representation on the calculus of vector current vacuum expectation values for baryon states of spin and isospin half and arbitrary momenta and we show how elastic form factors can be derived.

Holographic model for dilepton production in p-p collisions

We propose a holographic model for dilepton production in proton-proton collisions based on the exchange of vector mesons. The holographic hard wall model is used to describe the dynamics and interactions of vector mesons and baryons. We estimate the parameters lambda, mu, nu that characterize the angular distribution of the produced dileptons in a region of q_T^2 << Q^2, where perturbative QCD presents an effective strong coupling due to large logarithm corrections.

Deep inelastic scattering for vector mesons in holographic D4-D8 model

We study deep inelastic scattering for vector and axial vector mesons in the holographic D4-D8 brane model. We consider tree level contributions with one particle in the final hadronic state. We obtain the unpolarized structure functions F1 and F2 for the rho and a1 mesons for q2 < 80 GeV2 and 0.2 < x < 1. We find that the ratio F2/(2xF1) is approximately equal to one for some ranges of x and q2, satisfying the Callan-Gross relation.

Deep inelastic scattering off a plasma with flavour from D3-D7 brane model

We investigate the propagation of a space-like flavour current in a strongly coupled N = 2 super Yang-Mills plasma using the D3-D7 brane model at finite temperature. The partonic contribution to the plasma structure functions is obtained from the imaginary part of the retarded current-current commutator. At high temperatures we find a non-vanishing result, for a high energy current, indicating absorption of the flavour current by the quark constituents of the plasma. At low temperatures there is no quark contribution to the plasma structure functions.

Energy creation in a moving solenoid?

The electromagnetic energy $U_{em}$ stored in the magnetic field of an ideal solenoid at rest appears for a moving observer as $U'_{em} $, a sum of magnetic and electric energies satisfying: $U'_{em} > γU_{em}$. We explain this seemingly paradoxical result calculating the stresses in the solenoid structure and showing that the total energy of the solenoid transforms by the expected relativistic factor $γ$.

Form factors of vector and axial-vector mesons in holographic D4-D8 model

We calculate elastic and non-elastic electromagnetic form factors for vector and axial-vector mesons in the holographic D4-D8 brane model. We obtain the mass spectrum and Regge trajectories for these particles. From the elastic form factors we extract the electric radius, the magnetic and quadrupole moments. Form factors for transverse and longitudinal polarizations are also obtained. We find superconvergence sum rules for the vector and axial-vector meson couplings that determine the asymptotic behavior of the form factors at large momentum transfer. Our results show good agreement with other holographic models and QCD.

Glueballs at finite temperature from AdS/QCD

Inspired in the AdS/CFT correspondence, a variety of holographic phenomenological models have been proposed in the last years to describe non-perturbative aspects of strong interactions. These models are denominated as AdS/QCD. In this work we review the use of the AdS/QCD soft-wall model to investigate the spectrum of scalar glueballs at finite temperature. The scalar glueball states are identified as the poles of the retarded correlation function of the glueball operator. In the gauge/gravity duality, these poles are determined by the quasinormal spectrum of a massless scalar field propagating in the bulk geometry that consists on an ${AdS}_{5}$ black hole with a background dilaton field. We discuss some results for masses and decay widths of scalar glueballs in the plasma phase and analyse how these quantities evolve with temperature and momentum.

Scattering vector mesons in D4/D8 model

We review in this proceedings some recent results for vector meson form factors obtained using the holographic D4-D8 brane model. The D4-D8 brane model, proposed by Sakai and Sugimoto, is a holographic dual of a semi-realistic strongly coupled large N_c QCD since it breaks supersymmetry and incorporates chiral symmetry breaking. We analyze the vector meson wave functions and Regge trajectories as well.

T-duality for open strings in the presence of backgrounds and noncommutativity

We investigate the effect of T-duality on noncommutativity. Starting with open strings ending on a D2-brane wrapped on a $T^2$ torus in the presence of a Kalb Ramond field, we consider Buscher transformations on the coordinates and background. We find that the dual system is commutative. We also study alternative transformations that can preserve noncommutativity.

Strong interactions and gauge/string duality

We discuss some recent phenomenological models for strong interactions based on the idea of gauge/string duality. A very good estimate for hadronic masses can be found by placing an infrared cut off in AdS space. Considering static strings in this geometry one can also reproduce the phenomenological Cornell potential for a quark anti-quark potential at zero temperature. Placing static strings in an AdS Schwarzschild space with an infrared cut off one finds a transition from a confining to a deconfining phase at some critical horizon radius (associated with temperature).

preprint2006arXiv

Static strings in Randall-Sundrum scenarios and the quark anti-quark potential

We calculate the energy of a static string in an AdS slice between two D3-branes with orbifold condition. The energy for configurations with endpoints on a brane grows linearly for large separation between these points. The derivative of the energy has a discontinuity at some critical separation. Choosing a particular position for one of the branes we find configurations with smooth energy. In the limit where the other brane goes to infinity the energy has a Coulombian behaviour for short separations and can be identified with the Cornell potential for a quark anti-quark pair. This identification leads to effective values for the AdS radius, the string tension and the position of the infrared brane. These results suggest an approximate duality between static strings in an AdS slice and a heavy quark anti-quark configuration in a confining gauge theory.

Remarks on gauge fixing and BRST quantization of noncommutative gauge theories

We consider the BRST gauge fixing procedure of the noncommutative Yang-Mills theory and of the gauged U(N) Proca model. An extended Seiberg-Witten map involving ghosts, antighosts and auxiliary fields for non Abelian gauge theories is studied. We find that the extended map behaves differently for these models. For the Yang-Mills theory in the Lorentz gauge it was not possible to find a map that relates the gauge conditions in the noncommutative and ordinary theories. For the gauged Proca model we found a particular map relating the unitary gauge fixings in both formulations.

Superspace Formulation for the BRST Quantization of the Chiral Schwinger Model

It has recently been shown that the Field Antifield quantization of anomalous irreducible gauge theories with closed algebra can be represented in a BRST superspace where the quantum action at one loop order, including the Wess Zumino term, and the anomalies show up as components of the same superfield. We show here how the Chiral Schwinger model can be represented in this formulation.
