A Model-Based Reinforcement Learning Approach for PID Design

Proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is widely used across various industrial process control applications because of its straightforward implementation. However, it can be challenging to fine-tune the PID parameters in practice to achieve robust performance. The paper proposes a model-based reinforcement learning (RL) framework to design PID controllers leveraging the probabilistic inference for learning control (PILCO) method and Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD). Since PID controllers have a much more interpretable control structure than a network basis function, an optimal policy given by PILCO is transformed into a set of robust PID tuning parameters for underactuated mechanical systems. The presented method is general and can blend with several model-based and model-free algorithms. The performance of the devised PID controllers is demonstrated with simulation studies for a benchmark cart-pole system under disturbances and system parameter uncertainties.

The ANTARES Astronomical Time-Domain Event Broker

We describe the Arizona-NOIRLab Temporal Analysis and Response to Events System (ANTARES), a software instrument designed to process large-scale streams of astronomical time-domain alerts. With the advent of large-format CCDs on wide-field imaging telescopes, time-domain surveys now routinely discover tens of thousands of new events each night, more than can be evaluated by astronomers alone. The ANTARES event broker will process alerts, annotating them with catalog associations and filtering them to distinguish customizable subsets of events. We describe the data model of the system, the overall architecture, annotation, implementation of filters, system outputs, provenance tracking, system performance, and the user interface.

Lattice vibrations boost demagnetization entropy in shape memory alloy

Magnetocaloric (MC) materials present an avenue for chemical-free, solid state refrigeration through cooling via adiabatic demagnetization. We have used inelastic neutron scattering to measure the lattice dynamics in the MC material Ni45Co5Mn36.6In13.4. Upon heating across the Curie Temperature (TC), the material exhibits an anomalous increase in phonon entropy of 0.22 +/- 0.04 kB/atom, which is ten times larger than expected from conventional thermal expansion. This transition is accompanied by an abrupt softening of the transverse optic phonon. We present first-principle calculations showing a strong coupling between lattice distortions and magnetic excitations.

First-principles calculation of the instability leading to giant inverse magnetocaloric efects

The structural and magnetic properties of functional Ni-Mn-Z (Z = Ga, In, Sn) Heusler alloys are studied by first-principles and Monte Carlo methods. The \textit{ab initio} calculations give a basic understanding of the underlying physics which is associated with the strong competition of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions with increasing chemical disorder. The resulting $d$-electron orbital dependent magnetic ordering is the driving mechanism of magnetostructural instability which is accompanied by a drop of magnetization governing the size of the magnetocaloric effect. The thermodynamic properties are calculated by using the \textit{ab initio} magnetic exchange coupling constants in finite-temperature Monte Carlo simulations, which are used to accurately reproduce the experimental entropy and adiabatic temperature changes across the magnetostructural transition.
