Rational Curves in Projective Toric Varieties

We study embedded rational curves in projective toric varieties. Generalizing results of the first author and Zotine for the case of lines, we show that any degree dd rational curve in a toric variety XX can be constructed from a special affine-linear map called a degree dd Cayley structure. We characterize when the curves coming from a degree dd Cayley structure are smooth and have degree dd. We use this to establish a bijection between the set of irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme whose general element is a smooth degree dd curve, and so-called maximal smooth Cayley structures. Furthermore, we describe the normalization of the torus orbit closure of such rational curves in the Chow variety, and give partial results for the orbit closures in the Hilbert scheme.

K-Stability for Fano Manifolds with Torus Action of Complexity One

We consider Fano manifolds admitting an algebraic torus action with general orbit of codimension one. Using a recent result of Datar and Szekelyhidi, we effectively determine the existence of Kahler-Ricci solitons for those manifolds via the notion of equivariant K-stability. This allows us to give new examples of Kahler-Einstein Fano threefolds, and Fano threefolds admitting a non-trivial Kahler-Ricci soliton.

Khovanskii-finite rational curves of arithmetic genus 2

We study the existence of Khovanskii-finite valuations for rational curves of arithmetic genus two. We provide a semi-explicit description of the locus of degree n+2n+2 rational curves in Pn\mathbb{P}^n of arithmetic genus two that admit a Khovanskii-finite valuation. Furthermore, we describe an effective method for determining if a rational curve of arithmetic genus two defined over a number field admits a Khovanskii-finite valuation. This provides a criterion for deciding if such curves admit a toric degeneration. Finally, we show that rational curves with a single unibranched singularity are always Khovanskii-finite if their arithmetic genus is sufficiently small.

Tropical tangents for complete intersection curves

We consider the tropicalization of tangent lines to a complete intersection curve XX in Pn\mathbb{P}^n. Under mild hypotheses, we describe a procedure for computing the tropicalization of the image of the Gauss map of XX in terms of the tropicalizations of the hypersurfaces cutting out XX. We apply this to obtain descriptions of the tropicalization of the dual variety X∗X^* and tangential variety τ(X)τ(X) of XX. In particular, we are able to compute the degrees of X∗X^* and τ(X)τ(X) and the Newton polytope of τ(X)τ(X) without using any elimination theory.

Deformations of Smooth Complete Toric Varieties: Obstructions and the Cup Product

Let XX be a complete Q\mathbb{Q}-factorial toric variety. We explicitly describe the space H2(X,TX)H^2(X,T_X) and the cup product map H1(X,TX)×H1(X,TX)→H2(X,TX)H^1(X,T_X)\times H^1(X,T_X)\to H^2(X,T_X) in combinatorial terms. Using this, we give an example of a smooth projective toric threefold for which the cup product map does not vanish, showing that in general, smooth complete toric varieties may have obstructed deformations.

Khovanskii-Finite Valuations, Rational Curves, and Torus Actions

We study full rank homogeneous valuations on (multi)-graded domains and ask when they have finite Khovanskii bases. We show that there is a natural reduction from multigraded to simply graded domains. As special cases, we consider projective coordinate rings of rational curves, and almost toric varieties. Our results relate to several problems posed by Kaveh and Manon, and imply that the procedure of Bossinger-Lamboglia-Mincheva-Mohammadi for producing tropical prime cones will not terminate in general.

Singular Curves of Low Degree and Multifiltrations from Osculating Spaces

In order to study projections of smooth curves, we introduce multifiltrations obtained by combining flags of osculating spaces. We classify all configurations of singularities occurring for a projection of a smooth curve embedded by a complete linear system away from a projective linear space of dimension at most two. In particular, we determine all configurations of singularities of non-degenerate degree d rational curves in Pn\mathbb{P}^n when d−n≤3d - n \leq 3 and d<2nd < 2n. Along the way, we describe the Schubert cycles giving rise to these projections. We also reprove a special case of the Castelnuovo bound using these multifiltrations: under the assumption d<2nd < 2n, the arithmetic genus of any nondegenerate degree dd curve in Pn\mathbb{P}^n is at most d−nd - n.

Fano schemes of determinants and permanents

Let Dm,nrD_{m,n}^r and Pm,nrP_{m,n}^r denote the subschemes of Pmn−1\mathbb{P}^{mn-1} given by the r×rr\times r determinants (respectively the r×rr\times r permanents) of an m×nm\times n matrix of indeterminates. In this paper, we study the geometry of the Fano schemes Fk(Dm,nr)\mathbf{F}_k(D_{m,n}^r) and Fk(Pm,nr)\mathbf{F}_k(P_{m,n}^r) parametrizing the kk-dimensional planes in Pmn−1\mathbb{P}^{mn-1} lying on Dm,nrD_{m,n}^r and Pm,nrP_{m,n}^r, respectively. We prove results characterizing which of these Fano schemes are smooth, irreducible, and connected; and we give examples showing that they need not be reduced. We show that F1(Dn,nn)\mathbf{F}_1(D_{n,n}^n) always has the expected dimension, and we describe its components exactly. Finally, we give a detailed study of the Fano schemes of kk-planes on the 3×33\times 3 determinantal and permanental hypersurfaces.

AG Codes from Polyhedral Divisors

A description of complete normal varieties with lower dimensional torus action has been given by Altmann, Hausen, and Suess, generalizing the theory of toric varieties. Considering the case where the acting torus T has codimension one, we describe T-invariant Weil and Cartier divisors and provide formulae for calculating global sections, intersection numbers, and Euler characteristics. As an application, we use divisors on these so-called T-varieties to define new evaluation codes called T-codes. We find estimates on their minimum distance using intersection theory. This generalizes the theory of toric codes and combines it with AG codes on curves. As the simplest application of our general techniques we look at codes on ruled surfaces coming from decomposable vector bundles. Already this construction gives codes that are better than the related product code. Further examples show that we can improve these codes by constructing more sophisticated T-varieties. These results suggest to look further for good codes on T-varieties.
