Noether's theorem for higher-order variational problems of Herglotz type

We approach higher-order variational problems of Herglotz type from an optimal control point of view. Using optimal control theory, we derive a generalized Euler-Lagrange equation, transversality conditions, a DuBois-Reymond necessary optimality condition and Noether's theorem for Herglotz's type higher-order variational problems, valid for piecewise smooth functions.

Variational problems of Herglotz type with time delay: DuBois-Reymond condition and Noether's first theorem

We extend the DuBois-Reymond necessary optimality condition and Noether's first theorem to variational problems of Herglotz type with time delay. Our results provide, as corollaries, the DuBois-Reymond necessary optimality condition and the first Noether theorem for variational problems with time delay recently proved in [Numer. Algebra Control Optim. 2 (2012), no. 3, 619-630]. Our main result is also a generalization of the first Noether-type theorem for the generalized variational principle of Herglotz proved in [Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal. 20 (2002), no. 2, 261-273].

Hahn's Symmetric Quantum Variational Calculus

We introduce and develop the Hahn symmetric quantum calculus with applications to the calculus of variations. Namely, we obtain a necessary optimality condition of Euler-Lagrange type and a sufficient optimality condition for variational problems within the context of Hahn's symmetric calculus. Moreover, we show the effectiveness of Leitmann's direct method when applied to Hahn's symmetric variational calculus. Illustrative examples are provided.

Necessary Optimality Conditions for Higher-Order Infinite Horizon Variational Problems on Time Scales

We obtain Euler-Lagrange and transversality optimality conditions for higher-order infinite horizon variational problems on a time scale. The new necessary optimality conditions improve the classical results both in the continuous and discrete settings: our results seem new and interesting even in the particular cases when the time scale is the set of real numbers or the set of integers.

Generalizing the variational theory on time scales to include the delta indefinite integral

We prove necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type for generalized problems of the calculus of variations on time scales with a Lagrangian depending not only on the independent variable, an unknown function and its delta derivative, but also on a delta indefinite integral that depends on the unknown function. Such kind of variational problems were considered by Euler himself and have been recently investigated in [Methods Appl. Anal. 15 (2008), no. 4, 427-435]. Our results not only provide a generalization to previous results, but also give some other interesting optimality conditions as special cases.

The Second Euler-Lagrange Equation of Variational Calculus on Time Scales

The fundamental problem of the calculus of variations on time scales concerns the minimization of a delta-integral over all trajectories satisfying given boundary conditions. In this paper we prove the second Euler-Lagrange necessary optimality condition for optimal trajectories of variational problems on time scales. As an example of application of the main result, we give an alternative and simpler proof to the Noether theorem on time scales recently obtained in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 342 (2008), no. 2, 1220-1226].
