Circular orbits around higher dimensional Einstein and pure Gauss-Bonnet rotating black holes

In this paper we study circular orbits around higher dimensional rotating Myers-Perry and pure Gauss-Bonnet (GB) black holes. It turns out that for the former there occurs no potential well to harbour bound and thereby stable circular orbits. The only circular orbits that could occur are all unstable and their radius is bounded from the below by that of the photon circular orbit. On the other hand bound and stable circular orbits do exist for pure GB/Lovelock rotating black holes (the metric is though not an exact solution of pure Lovelock vacuum equation but it satisfies the equation in the leading order and has all the desired properties) in dimensions, $2N+2 \leq D \leq 4N$ (for $N=2$ pure GB in $D = 6, 7, 8$) where $N$ is the degree of Lovelock polynomial. Thus bound and stable circular orbits could exist around higher dimensional rotating black holes only for pure GB/Lovelock gravity. This property is a nice discriminator between Myers-Perry and pure GB/Lovelock rotating black holes.

Fundamental forces and their dynamics

In this essay, we wish to propose a general principle: \it{the equation of motion or dynamics of a fundamental force should not be prescribed but instead be entirely driven by geometry of the appropriate spacetime manifold, and the equation is then obtained by employing only the geometric property without appeal to an action.} The motivation for this pronouncement comes from the fact that the equation of motion of general relativity follows from the geometry of Riemannian spacetime manifold without appeal to anything else from outside. The driving differential geometric property is the Bianchi identity satisfied by the Riemann curvature tensor. Similarly it is geometry of the principal tangent bundle of fibre spacetime manifold that may account for dynamics of the gauge vector fields. It is the classical electric force for the Abelian gauge symmetry group while the non-Abelian symmetry leads to the non-Abelian forces, the weak and the strong. We shall also reflect on a unified picture of the basic forces, and the duality correspondences it may inspire.

Maximum Force for Black Holes and Buchdahl Stars

Black hole and Buchdahl star are identified respectively by $Φ(R)=1/2, 4/9$ where $g_{tt}=1-2Φ(R)$ for a spherically symmetric static metric. We investigate the maximum force for black hole and Buchdahl star when one of the participating objects is charged and/or rotating while the other is neutral and non-rotating. It turns out that the maximum force between two Schwarzschild objects is universal, given in terms of the fundamental constant velocity of light and the gravitational constant in general relativity (GR) in the usual four dimensional spacetime. In general this feature uniquely picks out the pure Lovelock gravity (having only one $N$th order term in action which includes GR in the linear order $N=1$) and the dimensional spectrum, $D=3N+1$, where $N$ is degree of the Lovelock polynomial action.

Novel way to the metric of higher dimensional rotating black holes

We wish to carry forward to higher dimensions the insightful and novel method of obtaining the Kerr metric proposed by one of us [Gen. Relativ. Gravit. 45, 2383 (2013)] for deriving the Myers-Perry rotating black hole metric. We begin with a flat spacetime metric written in oblate spheroidal coordinates (ellipsoidal geometry) appropriate for the inclusion of rotation, and then introduce arbitrary functions to introduce a gravitational potential due to mass, which are then determined by requiring that a massless particle experiences no acceleration, while a massive particle feels Newtonian acceleration at large r. We further generalize the method to include the cosmological constant Λ to obtain the MyersPerry de Sitter/antide Sitter black hole metric.

Pure Gauss-Bonnet NUT Black Hole Solution: I

We find a new exact $Λ$-vacuum solution in pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity with NUT charge in six dimension with horizon having product topology $S^{(2)} \times S^{(2)}$. We also discuss its horizon and singularity structure, and consequently arrive at a parameter window for its physical viability. It should be noted that all NUT black hole solutions in higher dimensions have product, instead of spherical, topology. We prove, in general, that it is because of the radial symmetry of the NUT spacetime; i.e. in higher dimensions NUT spacetime cannot maintain radial symmetry unless horizon has $S^{(2)}$ or its product topology. On the way we also prove a general result for spherical symmetry that when null energy condition is satisfied, one has then only to solve a first order equation to get a vacuum or $Λ$-vacuum solution.

Strong cosmic censorship conjecture for a charged BTZ black hole

The strong cosmic censorship conjecture, whose validation asserts the deterministic nature of general relativity, has been studied for charged BTZ black holes in three dimensional general relativity, as well as for Nth order pure Lovelock gravity in d=2N+1 spacetime dimensions. Through both analytical and numerical routes, we have computed the ratio of the imaginary part of the quasi-normal mode frequencies with the surface gravity at the Cauchy horizon. The lowest of which corresponds to the key parameter associated with violation of strong cosmic censorship conjecture. Our results demonstrate that this parameter is always less than the critical value $(1/2)$, thereby respecting the strong cosmic censorship conjecture. This is in complete contrast to the four or, higher dimensional black holes, as well as for rotating BTZ black hole, where the violation of strong cosmic censorship conjecture exists. Implications and possible connection with the stability of the photon orbits have been discussed.

Weak cosmic censorship conjecture in the pure Lovelock gravity

It is well known that a rotating black hole in four dimension could be overspun by linear order test particle accretion which however always gets overturned when non-linear perturbations are included. It turns out that in the Einstein gravity, repulsion due to rotation dominates over attraction due to mass in dimensions, $D>5$, and consequently black hole cannot be overspun even for linear order accretion. For the pure Lovelock rotating black hole, this dimensional threshold is $D>4N+1$ where $N$ is degree of single $N$th order term in the Lovelock polynomial in the action. Thus the pure Lovelock rotating black holes always obey the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) in all dimensions greater than $4N+1$. Since overall gravity being repulsive beyond this dimensional threshold, how is rotating black hole then formed there?

preprint2021arXiv

On overspinning of black holes in higher dimensions

It turns out that repulsive effect due to rotation of a rotating black hole dominates over attraction due to mass for large $r$ in dimensions $>5$. This gives rise to a remarkable result that black hole in these higher dimensions in contrast to lower dimensional ones cannot be overspun even under linear test particle accretion. Further if a black hole in dimension $>4$ has one of its rotation parameters zero, it has only one horizon and hence it can never be overspun. Thus rotating black holes in six and higher dimensions, and those with one rotation parameter switched off, would always obey the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC).

Pure Gauss-Bonnet NUT black hole with and without non-central singularity

It is known that NUT solution has many interesting features and pathologies like being non-singular and having closed timelike curves. It turns out that in higher dimensions horizon topology cannot be spherical but it has instead to be product of $2$-spheres so as to retain radial symmetry of spacetime. In this letter we wish to present a new solution of pure Gauss-Bonnet $Λ$-vacuum equation describing a black hole with NUT charge. It has three interesting cases: (a) black hole with both event and cosmological horizons with singularity being hidden behind the former, (b) a regular spacetime free of both horizon and singularity, and (c) black hole with event horizon without singularity and cosmological horizon. Singularity here is always non-centric at $r \neq 0$.

An electromagnetic extension of the Schwarzschild interior solution and the corresponding Buchdahl limit

We wish to construct a model for charged star as a generalization of the uniform density Schwarzschild interior solution. We employ the Vaidya and Tikekar ansatz [{\it Astrophys. Astron.} {\bf 3} (1982) 325] for one of the metric potentials and electric field is chosen in such a way that when it is switched off the metric reduces to the Schwarzschild. This relates charge distribution to the Vaidya-Tikekar parameter, $k$, indicating deviation form sphericity of three dimensional space when embedded into four dimensional Euclidean space. The model is examined against all the physical conditions required for a relativistic charged fluid sphere as an interior to a charged star. We also obtain and discuss charged analogue of the Buchdahl compactness bound.

Buchdahl compactness limit and gravitational field energy

The main aim of this paper is essentially to point out that the Buchdahl compactness limit of a static object is given by \it{gravitational field energy being less than or equal to half of its non-gravitational matter energy}. It is thus entirely determined without any reference to interior distribution by the exterior unique solutions, the Schwarzschild for neutral and the Reissner-Nordstr{$\ddot o$}m for charged object. In terms of surface potential, it reads as $Φ(R) = (M-Q^2/2R)/R \leq 4/9$ which translates to surface red-shift being less than or equal to $3$. It also prescribes an upper bound on charge an object could have, $Q^2/M^2 \leq 9/8 > 1$.

Dust collapse in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We consider gravitational collapse in the recently proposed 4D limit of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We show that for collapse of a sphere made of homogeneous dust the process is qualitatively similar to the case of pure Einstein's gravity. The singularity forms as the endstate of collapse and it is trapped behind the horizon at all times. However, and differently from Einstein's theory, as a consequence of the Gauss-Bonnet term, the collapsing cloud reaches the singularity with zero velocity, and the time of formation of the singularity is delayed with respect to the pure Einstein case.

Five dimensional charged rotating minimally gauged supergravity black hole cannot be over-spun and/or over-charged in non-linear accretion

Generally black hole could be over charged/spun violating the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) for linear order accretion while the same is always restored back for non-linear accretion. The only exception however is that of a five dimensional rotating black hole with single rotation that cannot be overspun even at linear order. In this paper we investigate this question for a five dimensional charged rotating minimally gauged supergravity black hole and show that it could not be overspun under non-linear accretion and thereby respecting WCCC. However in the case of single rotation WCCC is however also respected for linear accretion when angular momentum of accreting particle is greater than its charge irrespective of relative dominance of charge and rotation parameters of black hole.

Limits on stellar structures in Lovelock theories of gravity

We study the bound on the compactness of a stellar object in pure Lovelock theories of arbitrary order in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, involving electromagnetic field. The bound we derive for a generic pure Lovelock theory, reproduces the known results in four dimensional Einstein gravity. Both the case of a charged shell and that of a charge sphere demonstrates that for a given spacetime dimension, stars in general relativity are more compact than the stars in pure Lovelock theories. In addition, as the strength of the Maxwell field increases, the stellar structures become more compact, i.e., the radius of the star decreases. In the context of four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity as well, an increase in the strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling (behaving as an effective electric charge), increases the compactness of the star. Implications are discussed.

On causal structure of $4D$-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole

The recently proposed effective equation of motion for the $4D$- Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits a static black hole solution that has, like the Rissner-Nordström charged black hole, two horizons instead of one for the Schwarzschild black hole. This means that the central singularity is timelike instead of spacelike. It should though be noted that in $D\geq5$, the solution always admits only one horizon like the Schwarzshild solution. In the equation defining the horizon, the rescaled Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant appears as a new 'gravitational charge' with a repulsive effect to cause in addition to event horizon a Cauchy horizon. Thus it radically alters the causal structure of the black hole.

Six-dimensional Myers-Perry rotating black hole cannot be overspun

Though under nonlinear accretion, all black holes in four and higher dimensions obey the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (CCC); however, they generally violate it for linear test particle accretion with the exception of five-dimensional rotating black hole with a single rotation. In dimensions greater than five, there exists no extremal condition for black hole with single rotation and hence it can never be overspun. However, the extremal condition does exist for five-dimensional black hole with two rotations and then it could indeed be overspun under linear accretion. In this paper, we study the case of six-dimensional rotating black hole with two rotations and show that unlike the five-dimensional black hole it cannot be overspun under linear accretion. Though for nonlinear accretion, this result is anyway expected to hold good, yet we have verified it with an explicit calculation. Further, we would like to conjecture that so should be the case in all dimensions greater than six. Thus, the weak CCC may always be obeyed even at linear accretion process for rotating black hole in all dimensions greater than five.

Supermassive black holes as possible sources of ultra high energy cosmic rays

Production and acceleration mechanisms of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) of energy $>10^{20}$eV, clearly beyond the GZK-cutoff limit remain unclear that points to exotic nature of the phenomena. Recent observations of extragalactic neutrino may indicate the source of UHECRs being an extragalactic supermassive black hole (SMBH). We demonstrate that ultra-efficient energy extraction from rotating SMBH driven by the magnetic Penrose process (MPP) could indeed foot the bill. We envision ionization of neutral particles, such as neutron beta-decay, skirting close to the black hole horizon that energizes protons to over $10^{20}$eV for SMBH of mass $10^9 M_{\odot}$ and magnetic field of strength $10^4$G. Applied to Galactic center SMBH we have proton energy of order $\approx 10^{15.6}$eV that coincides with the knee of the cosmic ray spectra. We show that large $γ_z$ factors of high-energy particles along the escaping directions occur only in the presence of induced charge of the black hole that is known as the Wald charge in the case of uniform magnetic field. It is remarkable that the process neither requires extended acceleration zone, nor fine-tuning of accreting matter parameters. Further, this leads to certain verifiable constraints on SMBH's mass and magnetic field strength as UHECRs sources. This clearly makes ultra-efficient regime of MPP one of the most promising mechanisms for fueling UHECRs powerhouse.

(Not so) pure Lovelock Kasner metrics

The gravitational interaction is expected to be modified for very short distances. This is particularly important in situations in which the curvature of spacetime is large in general, such as close to the initial cosmological singularity. The gravitational dynamics is then captured by the higher curvature terms in the action, making it difficult to reliably extrapolate any prediction of general relativity. In this note we review pure Lovelock equations for Kasner-type metrics. These equations correspond to a single $N$th order Lovelock term in the action in $d=2N+1,\,2N+2$ dimensions, and they capture the relevant gravitational dynamics when aproaching the big-bang singularity within the Lovelock family of theories. These are classified in several isotropy types. Some of these families correspond to degenerate classes of solutions, such that their dynamics is not completely determined by the equations of pure Lovelock gravity. Instead, these Kasner solutions become sensitive to the subleading terms in the Lovelock series.

Higher dimensional generalization of Buchdahl-Vaidya-Tikekar model for super compact star

We obtain higher dimensional solutions for super compact star for the Buchdahl-Vaidya-Tikekar metric ansatz. In particular, Vaidya and Tikekar characterized the $3$-geometry by a parameter, $K$ which is related to the sign of density gradient. It turns out that the key pressure isotropy equation continues to have the same Gauss form, and hence $4$-dimensional solutions can be taken over to higher dimensions with $K$ satisfying the relation, $K_n = (K_4-n+4)/(n-3)$ where subscript refers to dimension of spacetime. Further $K\geq0$ is required else density would have undesirable feature of increasing with radius, and the equality indicates a constant density star described by the Schwarzschild interior solution. This means for a given $K_4$, maximum dimension could only be $n=K_4+4$, else $K_n$ will turn negative.

Brown-York quasilocal energy in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity and black hole horizons

A standard candidate for quasilocal energy in general relativity is the Brown-York energy, which is essentially a two dimensional surface integral of the extrinsic curvature on the two-boundary of a spacelike hypersurface referenced to flat spacetime. Several years back one of us had conjectured that the black hole horizon is defined by equipartition of gravitational and non-gravitational energy. By employing the above definition of quasilocal Brown-York energy, we have verified the equipartition conjecture for static charged and charged axi-symmetric blck holes in general relativity. We have further generalized the Brown-York formalism to all orders in Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity and have verified the conjecture for pure Lovelock charged black hole in all even d=2m+2 dimensions, where m is the degree of Lovelock action. It turns out that the equipartition conjecture works only for pure Lovelock, and not for Einstein-Lovelock, black holes.

Dynamical structure of Pure Lovelock gravity

We study dynamical structure of Pure Lovelock gravity in spacetime dimensions higher than four using the Hamiltonian formalism. The action consists of cosmological constant and a single higher-order polynomial in the Riemann tensor. Similarly to Einstein-Hilbert action, it possesses a unique constant curvature vacuum and charged black hole solutions. We analyze physical degrees of freedom and local symmetries in this theory. In contrast to the Einstein-Hilbert case, a number of degrees of freedom depends on the background and can vary from zero to the maximal value carried by the Lovelock theory.

Early-time cosmological solutions in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory

In this work, we consider a generalised gravitational theory that contains the Einstein term, a scalar field and the quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term. We focus on the early-universe dynamics, and demonstrate that a simple choice of the coupling function between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet term and a simplifying assumption regarding the role of the Ricci scalar can lead to new, analytical, elegant solutions with interesting characteristics. We first argue, and demonstrate in the context of two different models, that the presence of the Ricci scalar in the theory at early times, when the curvature is strong, does not affect the actual cosmological solutions. By considering therefore a pure scalar-GB theory with a quadratic coupling function we derive a plethora of interesting, analytic solutions: for a negative coupling parameter, we obtain inflationary, de Sitter-type solutions or expanding solutions with a de Sitter phase in their past and a natural exit mechanism at later times; for a positive coupling function, we find instead singularity-free solutions with no Big-Bang singularity. We show that the aforementioned solutions arise only for this particular choice of coupling function, a result that may hint to some fundamental role that this coupling function may hold in the context of an ultimate theory.

Emergence of product of constant curvature spaces in loop quantum cosmology

The loop quantum dynamics of Kantowski-Sachs spacetime and the interior of higher genus black hole spacetimes with a cosmological constant has some peculiar features not shared by various other spacetimes in loop quantum cosmology. As in the other cases, though the quantum geometric effects resolve the physical singularity and result in a non-singular bounce, after the bounce a spacetime with small spacetime curvature does not emerge in either the subsequent backward or the forward evolution. Rather, in the asymptotic limit the spacetime manifold is a product of two constant curvature spaces. Interestingly, though the spacetime curvature of these asymptotic spacetimes is very high, their effective metric is a solution to the Einstein's field equations. Analysis of the components of the Ricci tensor shows that after the singularity resolution, the Kantowski-Sachs spacetime leads to an effective metric which can be interpreted as the `charged' Nariai, while the higher genus black hole interior can similarly be interpreted as anti Bertotti-Robinson spacetime with a cosmological constant. These spacetimes are `charged' in the sense that the energy momentum tensor that satisfies the Einstein's field equations is formally the same as the one for the uniform electromagnetic field, albeit it has a purely quantum geometric origin. The asymptotic spacetimes also have an emergent cosmological constant which is different in magnitude, and sometimes even its sign, from the cosmological constant in the Kantowski-Sachs and the interior of higher genus black hole metrics. With a fine tuning of the latter cosmological constant, we show that `uncharged' Nariai, and anti Bertotti-Robinson spacetimes with a vanishing emergent cosmological constant can also be obtained.

Energetics and optical properties of $6$-dimensional rotating black hole in pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We study physical processes around a rotating black hole in pure Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity. In pure GB gravity, gravitational potential has slower fall off as compared to the corresponding Einstein potential in the same dimension. It is therefore expected that the energetics of pure GB black hole would be weaker, and our analysis bears out that the efficiency of energy extraction by Penrose process is increased to $25.8\%$ and particle acceleration is increased to $55.28\%$, and optical shadow of the black hole is decreased. These are the distinguishing in principle observable features of pure GB black hole.

Gauss-Bonnet Inflation

We consider an Einstein-Scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravitational theory, and argue that at early times the Ricci scalar can be safely ignored. We then demonstrate that the pure scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory, with a quadratic coupling function, naturally supports inflationary -- de Sitter -- solutions. During inflation, the scalar field decays exponentially and its effective potential remains always bounded. The theory contains also solutions where these de Sitter phases possess a natural exit mechanism and are replaced by linearly expanding -- Milne -- phases.

On Lovelock analogues of the Riemann tensor

It is possible to define an analogue of the Riemann tensor for $N$th order Lovelock gravity, its characterizing property being that the trace of its Bianchi derivative yields the corresponding analogue of the Einstein tensor. Interestingly there exist two parallel but distinct such analogues and the main purpose of this note is to reconcile both these formulations. In addition we will show that any pure Lovelock vacuum in odd $d = 2N + 1$ dimensions is Lovelock flat, i.e. any vacuum solution of the theory has vanishing Lovelock-Riemann tensor. Further, in presence of cosmological constant it is the Lovelock-Weyl tensor that vanishes.

Pure Lovelock Kasner metrics

We study pure Lovelock vacuum and perfect fluid equations for Kasner-type metrics. These equations correspond to a single $N$th order Lovelock term in the action in $d=2N+1,\,2N+2$ dimensions, and they capture the relevant gravitational dynamics when aproaching the big-bang singularity within the Lovelock family of theories. Pure Lovelock gravity also bears out the general feature that vacuum in the critical odd dimension, $d=2N+1$, is kinematic; i.e. we may define an analogue Lovelock-Riemann tensor that vanishes in vacuum for $d=2N+1$, yet the Riemann curvature is non-zero. We completely classify isotropic and vacuum Kasner metrics for this class of theories in several isotropy types. The different families can be characterized by means of certain higher order 4th rank tensors. We also analyze in detail the space of vacuum solutions for five and six dimensional pure Gauss-Bonnet theory. It possesses an interesting and illuminating geometric structure and symmetries that carry over to the general case. We also comment on a closely related family of exponential solutions and on the possibility of solutions with complex Kasner exponents. We show that the latter imply the existence of closed timelike curves in the geometry.

Static pure Lovelock black hole solutions with horizon topology ${\bf S^{(n)} \times S^{(n)}}$

It is well known that vacuum equation of arbitrary Lovelock order for static spacetime ultimately reduces to a single algebraic equation, we show that the same continues to hold true for pure Lovelock gravity of arbitrary order $N$ for topology ${\bf S^{(n)} \times S^{(n)}}$. We thus obtain pure Lovelock static black hole solutions with two-sphere topology for any order $N$, and in particular we study in full detail the third and fourth order Lovelock black holes. It is remarkable that thermodynamical stability of black hole discerns between odd and even $N$, and consequently between negative and positive $Λ$ and it favours the former while rejecting the latter.

Study of motion around a static black hole in Einstein and Lovelock gravity

We study motion around a static Einstein and pure Lovelock black hole in higher dimensions. It is known that in higher dimensions, bound orbits exist only for pure Lovelock black hole in all even dimensions, D=2N+2, where N is degree of Lovelock polynomial action. In particular, we compute periastron shift and light bending and the latter is given by one of transverse spatial components of Riemann curvature tensor. We also consider pseudo-Newtonian potentials and Kruskal coordinates.

The cosmological constant from the zero point energy of compact dimensions

We consider extra compact dimensions as the origin of a cosmological universal energy density in the regular dimensions, with only graviton fields propagating in the compact space dimensions. The quantum zero point energy originating from the finite size boundary condition in the compact dimensions can produce a constant energy density in regular $3$ space which is homogeneous and isotropic. It then makes a natural identification with the cosmological constant in conformity with the Einstein equation. It turns out that for the emergent energy density to agree with the observed value of the cosmological constant, the size/radius of compact dimension is to be of order of $10^{-2}$ cm.

Universality of isothermal fluid spheres in Lovelock gravity

We show universality of isothermal fluid spheres in pure Lovelock gravity where the equation of motion has only one $N$th order term coming from the corresponding Lovelock polynomial action of degree $N$. Isothermality is characterized by the equation of state, $p = αρ$ and the property, $ρ\sim 1/r^{2N}$. Then the solution describing isothermal spheres, which exist only for the pure Lovelock equation, is of the same form for the general Lovelock degree $N$ in all dimenions $d \geq 2N+2$. We further prove that the necessary and sufficient condition for the isothermal sphere is that its metric is conformal to the massless global monopole or the solid angle deficit metric, and this feature is also universal.

On static black holes solutions in Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with topology ${\bf SO(n) \times SO(n)}$

We study static black hole solutions in Einstein and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with product two-spheres topology, ${\bf SO(n) \times SO(n)}$, in higher dimensions. There is an unusual new feature of Gauss-Bonnet black hole that the avoidance of non-central naked singularity prescribes a mass range for black hole in terms of $Λ>0$. For Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole a limited window of negative values for $Λ$ is also permitted. This topology encompasses black string and brane as well as a generalized Nariai metric. We also give new solutions with product two-spheres of constant curvatures.

Stability and existence analysis of static black holes in pure Lovelock theories

In this paper, we study existence and stability of static black holes in Lovelock theories with a particular focus on pure Lovelock black holes. We derive the equation of stability from action without using S-deformation approach. It turns out that though pure-Lovelock black hole in even dimension is always unstable, however introduction of $Λ$ stablizes it by prescribing a lower threshold mass while there also exists an upper bound on mass which is given by existence of horizon. We also study stability of dimensionally continued black holes as well as of pure Lovelock analogue of BTZ black hole in all odd dimensions.

Bound orbits and gravitational theory

It can be easily shown that bound orbits around a static source can exist only in 4 dimension and in none else for any long range force. This is so not only for Maxwell's electromagnetic and Newton's gravity but also for Einstein's gravitation theory. In contrast to Maxwell's electrodynamics and Newton's gravity, GR has a natural higher dimensional generalization in Lovelock gravity which remarkably admits bound orbits around a static black hole in all even d=2N+2 dimensions where $N$ is degree of Lovelock polynomial action. This is as general a result as Bertrand's theorem of classical mechanics in which existence of closed orbits uniquely singles out the inverse square law for a long range central force.

Gravitational collapse in pure Lovelock gravity in higher dimensions

We study collapse of inhomogeneous dust and null dust (Vaidya radiation) in pure Lovelock gravity in higher dimensions. Since pure Lovelock gravity is kinematic in odd d=2N+1 dimension, hence pertinent dimension for the study is even d=2N+2, where N is degree of Lovelock polynomial. It turns out that pure Lovelock collapse favors naked singularity as against black hole for the Einstein case in the same dimension while strength of singularity as measured by divergence of Kretshmann scalar is interestingly the same in the two cases; i.e. the corresponding scalars have the same fall off behavior.

On the static Lovelock black holes

We consider static spherically symmetric Lovelock black holes and generalize the dimensionally continued black holes in such a way that they asymptotically for large r go over to the d-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole in dS/AdS spacetime. This means that the master algebraic polynomial is not degenerate but instead its derivative is degenerate. This family of solutions contains an interesting class of pure Lovelock black holes which are the Nth order Lovelock Λ-vacuum solu- tions having the remarkable property that their thermodynamical parameters have the universal character in terms of the event horizon radius. This is in fact a characterizing property of pure Lovelock theories. We also demonstrate the universality of the asymptotic Einstein limit for the Lovelock black holes in general.

Particle Acceleration Around 5-dimensional Kerr Black Hole

On the lines of the 4-dimensional Kerr black hole we consider the particle acceleration near a 5-dimensional Kerr black hole which has the two rotation parameters. It turns out that the center of mass energy of the two equal mass colliding particles as expected diverges for the extremal black hole and there is a symmetry in the results for $θ= 0, π/2$. Because of the two rotation parameters, $r=0$ can be a horizon without being a curvature singularity. It is shown that the acceleration of particles to high energies near the 5-D extreme rotating black hole avoids fine-tuning of the angular momentum of particles.

Probing pure Lovelock gravity by Nariai and Bertotti-Robinson solutions

The product spacetimes of constant curvature describe in Einstein gravity, which is linear in Riemann curvature, Nariai metric which is a solution of $Λ$-vacuum when curvatures are equal, $k_1=k_2$, while it is Bertotti-Robinson metric describing uniform electric field when curvatures are equal and opposite, $k_1=-k_2$. We probe pure Lovelock gravity by these simple product spacetimes and prove that the same characterization of these solutions is indeed true in general for pure Lovelock gravitational equation of order $N$ in $d=2N+2$ dimension. We also consider these solutions for the conventional setting of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Rotating black hole in Einstein and pure Lovelock gravity

We obtain rotating black hole metric for higher dimensional Einstein and pure Lovelock gravity by employing two independent and well motivated methods. One is based on the principle of incorporation of Newtonian acceleration for timelike motion while no acceleration for null motion. The other is the well known Newman-Janis alogrithm that converts a static black hole into a rotating one through a complex transformation. It turns out that both the methods give the same metric which for Einst of the eour pure Lovelock metricein black hole is an exact vacuum solution while for pure Lovelock black hole it satisfies the vacuum equation in the leading order. However it shares all the physical properties with the well known Kerr black hole.

In the Einstein gravity, besides the usual gravitational and centrifugal potential there is an additional attractive term that couples these two together. It is fun to enquire whether the latter could fully counteract the centrifugal repulsion everywhere making the spacetime completely free of the centrifugal acceleration. Einstein is Newton with space curved

The two defining features of the Einsteinian gravity are that it is self interactive as well as it links universally to all particles including zero mass particles. In the process of obtaining the Schwarzshild solution for gravitational field of a mass point, we would demonstrate how are these features incorporated? We would also show, unlike the Newtonian gravity, why the gravitational potential in the Schwarzshild solution can have its zero only at infinity and nowhere else;i.e. it is determined absolutely. Magnetic Penrose Process and Blanford-Zanejk mechanism: A clarification

The Penrose process (PP) is an ingenious mechanism of extracting rotational energy from a rotating black hole, however it was soon realized that it was not very efficient for its astrophysical applications for powering the central engine of quasars and AGNs. The situation however changed dramatically in the presence of magnetic field produced by the accretion disk surrounding the hole in the equatorial plane. In 1985, Wagh, Dhurandhar and Dadhich had for the first time considered the magnetic Penrose process (MPP) in which the magnetic field could now provide the energy required for a fragment to ride on negative energy orbit thereby overcoming the stringent velocity constraint of the original PP. Thus MPP turned very efficient and so much so that efficiency could now even exceed 100 percent. They had in principle established revival of PP for astrophysical applications in powering the high energy sources. MPP is however similar to the earlier discovered and well known Blandford-Znajeck (BZ) mechanism in which the rotational energy of the hole is extracted out through a purely electromagnetic process. Though both the processes use magnetic field as a device to extract rotational energy from the hole, yet their kernel is quite different in spirit. For the former magnetic field provides the threshold energy for particle to get onto negative energy orbit so that the other fragment goes out with enhanced energy while for the latter it generates an electric potential difference between the equatorial plane and the polar region, and it is the discharge of which that drives the energy flux out of the hole. In other words, MPP is still rooted in the spacetime geometry while BZ is essentially driven by electromagnetic interaction.

On the equivalence of the Einstein-Hilbert and the Einstein-Palatini formulations of general relativity for an arbitrary connection

In the framework of the Einstein-Palatini formalism, even though the projective transformation connecting the arbitrary connection with the Levi Civita connection has been floating in the literature for a long time and perhaps the result was implicitly known in the affine gravity community, yet as far as we know Julia and Silva were the first to realise its gauge character. We rederive this result by using the Rosenfeld-Dirac-Bergmann approach to constrained Hamiltonian systems and do a comprehensive self contained analysis establishing the equivalence of the Einstein-Palatini and the metric formulations without having to impose the gauge choice that the connection is symmetric. We also make contact with the the Einstein-Cartan theory when the matter Lagrangian has fermions.

The gravitational equation in higher dimensions

Like the Lovelock Lagrangian which is a specific homogeneous polynomial in Riemann curvature, for an alternative derivation of the gravitational equation of motion, it is possible to define a specific homogeneous polynomial analogue of the Riemann curvature, and then the trace of its Bianchi derivative yields the corresponding polynomial analogue of the divergence free Einstein tensor defining the differential operator for the equation of motion. We propose that the general equation of motion is $G^{(n)}_{ab} = -Λg_{ab} +κ_n T_{ab}$ for $d=2n+1, \, 2n+2$ dimensions with the single coupling constant $κ_n$, and $n=1$ is the usual Einstein equation. It turns out that gravitational behavior is essentially similar in the critical dimensions for all $n$. All static vacuum solutions asymptotically go over to the Einstein limit, Schwarzschild-dS/AdS. The thermodynamical parameters bear the same relation to horizon radius, for example entropy always goes as $r_h^{d-2n}$ and so for the critical dimensions it always goes as $r_h, \, r_h^2$. In terms of the area, it would go as $A^{1/n}$. The generalized analogues of the Nariai and Bertotti-Robinson solutions arising from the product of two constant curvature spaces, also bear the same relations between the curvatures $k_1=k_2$ and $k_1=-k_2$ respectively.

The Lovelock gravity in the critical spacetime dimension

It is well known that the vacuum in the Einstein gravity, which is linear in the Riemann curvature, is trivial in the critical (2+1=3) dimension because vacuum solution is flat. It turns out that this is true in general for any odd critical $d=2n+1$ dimension where $n$ is the degree of homogeneous polynomial in Riemann defining its higher order analogue whose trace is the nth order Lovelock polynomial. This is the "curvature" for nth order pure Lovelock gravity as the trace of its Bianchi derivative gives the corresponding analogue of the Einstein tensor \cite{bianchi}. Thus the vacuum in the pure Lovelock gravity is always trivial in the odd critical (2n+1) dimension which means it is pure Lovelock flat but it is not Riemann flat unless $n=1$ and then it describes a field of a global monopole. Further by adding Lambda we obtain the Lovelock analogue of the BTZ black hole.

FLRW cosmology in Weyl-Integrable Space-Time

We investigate the Weyl space-time extension of general relativity (GR) for studying the FLRW cosmology through focusing and defocusing of the geodesic congruences. We have derived the equations of evolution for expansion, shear and rotation in the Weyl space-time. In particular we consider the Starobinsky modification, $f(R)=R+βR^2-2Λ$, of gravity in the Einstein-Palatini formalism, which turns out to reduce to the Weyl integrable space-time (WIST) with the Weyl vector being a gradient. The modified Raychaudhuri equation takes the form of the Hill-type equation which is then analysed for studying formation of the caustics. In this model, it is possible to have a Big Bang singularity free cyclic Universe but unfortunately the periodicity turns out to be extremely short.

On the enigmatic $Λ$ - a true constant of spacetime

Had Einstein followed the Bianchi differential identity for the derivation of his equation of motion for gravitation, $Λ$ would have emerged as a true new constant of spacetime on the same footing as the velocity of light? It is then conceivable that he could have perhaps made the most profound prediction that the Universe may suffer accelerated expansion some time in the future! Further we argue that its identification with the quantum vacuum energy is not valid as it should have to be accounted for like the gravitational field energy by enlarging the basic framework of spacetime and not through a stress tensor. The acceleration of the expansion of the Universe may indeed be measuring its value for the first time observationally.

On the measure of spacetime and gravity

By following the general guiding principle that nothing should be prescribed or imposed on the universal entity, spacetime, we establish that it is the homogeneity (by which we mean homogeneity and isotropy of space and homogeneity of time) that requires not only a universally constant invariant velocity but also an invariant length given by its constant curvature, $Λ$ and spacetime is completely free of dynamics. Thus $c$ and $Λ$ are the only two true constants of the spacetime structure and no other physical constant could claim this degree of fundamentalness. When matter is introduced, the spacetime becomes inhomogeneous and dynamic, and its curvature then determines by the Bianchi differential identity the equation of motion for the Einstein gravity. The homogeneity thus demands that the natural state of \textit{free spacetime} is of constant curvature and the cosmological constant thus emerges as a clear prediction which seems to be borne out by the observations of accelerating expansion of the Universe. However it has no relation to the vacuum energy and it could be envisioned that in terms of the Planck area the Universe measures $10^{120}$ units!

Thermodynamical universality of the Lovelock black holes

The necessary and sufficient condition for the thermodynamical universality of the static spherically symmetric Lovelock black hole is that it is the pure Lovelock Λ-vacuum solution. By universality we mean the thermodynamical parameters: temperature and entropy always bear the same relationship to the horizon radius irrespective of the Lovelock order and the spacetime dimension. For instance, the entropy always goes in terms of the horizon radius as rh and r^2 respectively for h odd and even dimensions. This universality uniquely identifies the pure Lovelock black hole with Λ.

Universal features of gravity and higher dimensions

We study some universal features of gravity in higher dimensions and by universal we mean a feature that remains true in all dimensions $\geq4$. They include: (a) the gravitational dynamics always follows from the Bianchi derivative of a homogeneous polynomial in Riemann curvature and it thereby characterizes the Lovelock polynomial action, (b) all the $Λ$-vacuum solutions of the Einstein-Lovelock as well as pure Lovelock equation have the same asymptotic limit agreeing with the $d$ dimensional Einstein solution and (c) gravity inside a uniform density sphere is independent of the spacetime dimension and it is always given by the Schwarzschild interior solution.

Characterization of the Lovelock gravity by Bianchi derivative

We prove the theorem: The second order quasi-linear differential operator as a second rank divergence free tensor in the equation of motion for gravitation could always be derived from the trace of the Bianchi derivative of the fourth rank tensor, which is a homogeneous polynomial in curvatures. The existence of such a tensor for each term in the polynomial Lagrangian is a new characterization of the Lovelock gravity.

Energetics of a rotating charged black hole in 5-dimensional supergravity

We investigate the properties of the event horizon and static limit for a charged rotating black hole solution of minimal supergravity theory in (1 + 4) dimension. Unlike the four-dimensional case, there are in general two rotations, and they couple to both mass and charge. This gives rise to much richer structure to ergosphere leading to energy extraction even for axial fall. Another interesting feature is that the metric in this case is sensitive to the sign of the Maxwell charge.

Radiating black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory and cosmic censorship

Exact nonstatic spherically symmetric black-hole solution of the higher dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills equations for a null dust with Yang-Mills gauge charge are obtained by employing Wu-Yang \textit{ansatz}, namely, HD-EYM Vaidya solution. It is interesting to note that gravitational contribution of YM gauge charge for this ansatz is indeed opposite (attractive rather than repulsive) that of Maxwell charge. It turns out that the gravitational collapse of null dust with YM gauge charge admit strong curvature shell focusing naked singularities violating cosmic censorship. However, there is significant shrinkage of the initial data space for a naked singularity of the HD-Vaidya collapse due to presence of YM gauge charge. The effect of YM gauge charge on structure and location of the apparent and event horizons is also discussed.

Universal Velocity and Universal Force

In his monumental discoveries, the driving force for Einstein was, I believe, consistency of concept and principle rather than conflict with experiment. Following this Einsteinian dictum, we would first argue that homogeneity (universal character) of space and time characterizes 'no force' (absence of force) and leads to existence of a universal velocity while inhomogeneity (again a universal property) characterizes curved spacetime and presence of a universal force which is present everywhere and always. The former gives rise to Special Relativity while the latter to General Relativity.

Entropy Bound and Causality Violation in Higher Curvature Gravity

In any quantum theory of gravity we do expect corrections to Einstein gravity to occur. Yet, at fundamental level, it is not apparent what the most relevant corrections are. We argue that the generic curvature square corrections present in lower dimensional actions of various compactified string theories provide a natural passage between the classical and quantum realms of gravity. The Gauss-Bonnet and $({\rm Riemann})^2$ gravities, in particular, provide concrete examples in which inconsistency of a theory, such as, a violation of microcausality, and a classical limit on black hole entropy are correlated. In such theories the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density, $η/s$, can be smaller than for a boundary conformal field theory with Einstein gravity dual. This result is interesting from the viewpoint that the nuclear matter or quark-gluon plasma produced (such as at RHIC) under extreme densities and temperatures may violate the conjectured bound $η/s\ge 1/4π$, {\it albeit} marginally so.

On Kaluza-Klein spacetime in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

By considering the product of the usual four dimensional spacetime with two dimensional space of constant curvature, an interesting black hole solution has recently been found for Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. It turns out that this as well as all others could easily be made to radiate Vaidya null dust. However there exists no Kerr analogue in this setting. To get the physical feel of the four dimensional black hole spacetimes, we study asymptotic behavior of stresses at the two ends, $r\to0$ and $r\to\infty$.

A dynamical symmetry of the spherical dust collapse

By linearly scaling the initial data set (mass and kinetic energy functions) together with the initial area radius of a collapsing dust sphere, we find a symmetry of the collapse dynamics. That is, the linear transformation defines an equivalence class of data sets which lead to the same end result as well as its evolution all through. In particular, the density and shear remain invariant initially as well as during the collapse. What the transformation is exhibiting is an interesting scaling relationship between mass, kinetic energy and the size of the collapsing dust sphere.

Non-singular black-holes on the brane

We investigate the possibility of obtaining non-singular black-hole solutions in the brane world model by solving the effective field equations for the induced metric on the brane. The Reissner-Nordstrom solution on the brane was obtained by Dadhich etal by imposing the null energy condition on the 3-brane for a bulk having non zero Weyl curvature. In this work, we relax the condition of vanishing scalar curvature $R$, however, retaining the null condition. We have shown that it is possible to obtain class of static non-singular spherically symmetric brane space-times admitting horizon. We obtain one such class of solution which is a regular version of the Reissner-Nordstrom solution in the standard general relativity.

Scalar and spinor perturbation to the most generalised Kerr-NUT space-time

The equations are invariant under duality transformation between the gravitational electric (M) and magnetic (l) charge, radial and angular coordinate, and radial and angular component of the field. We solve the equations separating into radial and angular parts. Moreover, if sets of Klein-Gordan and Dirac equation and corresponding solutions are known for Kerr space-time, under duality transformation, those in dual Kerr space-time are shown to be achieved. A few examples of solution are shown. We comment about the horizon and singularity conditions.

Action principle formulation for motion of extended bodies in General Relativity

We present an action principle formulation for the study of motion of an extended body in General Relativity in the limit of weak gravitational field. This gives the classical equations of motion for multipole moments of arbitrary order coupling to the gravitational field. In particular, a new force due to the octupole moment is obtained. The action also yields the gravitationally induced phase shifts in quantum interference experiments due to the coupling of all multipole moments.

Traversable wormholes with arbitrarily small energy condition violations

Traversable wormholes necessarily require violations of the averaged null energy condition; this being the definition of ``exotic matter''. However, the theorems which guarantee the energy condition violation are remarkably silent when it comes to making quantitative statements regarding the ``total amount'' of energy condition violating matter in the spacetime. We develop a suitable measure for quantifying this notion, and demonstrate the existence of spacetime geometries containing traversable wormholes that are supported by arbitrarily small quantities of ``exotic matter''.

Gravitational collapse of null strange quark fluid and cosmic censorship

We study gravitational collapse of the general spherically symmetric null strange quark fluid having the equation of state, $p = (ρ- 4B)/n$, where $B$ is the bag constant. An interesting feature that emerges is that the initial data set giving rise to naked singularity in the Vaidya collapse of null fluid gets covered due to the presence of strange quark matter component. Its implication to the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture is discussed.

However, there is shrinkage of the initial data space for a naked singularity of the Vaidya collapse due to the presence of strange quark matter.

Gravitational field of a rotating gravitational dyon

We have obtained the most general solution of the Einstein vacuum equation for the axially symmetric stationary metric in which both the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for particle motion and the Klein - Gordon equation are separable. It can be interpreted to describe the gravitational field of a rotating dyon, a particle endowed with both gravoelectric (mass) and gravomagnetic (NUT parameter) charge. Further, there also exists a duality relation between the two charges and the radial and the polar angle coordinates which keeps the solution invariant. The solution can however be transformed into the known Kerr - NUT solution indicating its uniqueness under the separability of equations of motion.

Gravitational collapse of null fluid on the brane

We first obtain the analogue of Vaidya's solution on the brane for studying the collapse of null fluid onto a flat Minkowski cavity on the brane. Since the back-reaction of the bulk onto the brane is supposed to strengthen gravity on the brane, it would favour formation of black hole as against naked singularity. That is the parameter window in the initial data set giving rise to naked singularity in the 4D Vaidya case would now get partially covered.

R=0 spacetimes and self-dual Lorentzian wormholes

A two-parameter family of spherically symmetric, static Lorentzian wormholes is obtained as the general solution of the equation $ρ=ρ_t=0$, where $ρ= T_{ij} u^iu^j$, $ρ_t = (T_{ij} - {1\over2} T g_{ij}) u^iu^j$, and $u^i u_i =- 1$. This equation characterizes a class of spacetimes which are ``self dual'' (in the sense of electrogravity duality). The class includes the Schwarzschild black hole, a family of naked singularities, and a disjoint family of Lorentzian wormholes, all of which have vanishing scalar curvature (R=0). Properties of these spacetimes are discussed. Using isotropic coordinates we delineate clearly the domains of parameter space for which wormholes, nakedly singular spacetimes and the Schwarzschild black hole can be obtained. A model for the required ``exotic'' stress-energy is discussed, and the notion of traversability for the wormholes is also examined.

Gamma-ray bursts as the birth-cries of black holes

The origin of cosmic gamma-ray bursts remains one of the most intriguing puzzles in astronomy. We suggest that purely general relativistic effects in the collapse of massive stars could account for these bursts. The late formation of closed trapped surfaces can occur naturally, allowing the escape of huge energy from curvature-generated fireballs, before these are hidden within a black hole.

The field equation from Newton's law of motion and absence of magnetic monopole

By requiring the linear differential operator in Newton's law of motion to be self adjoint, we obtain the field equation for the linear theory, which is the classical electrodynamics. In the process, we are also led to a fundamental universal chiral relation between electric and magnetic monopoles which implies that the two are related. Thus there could just exist only one kind of charge which is conventionally called electric.

Electromagnetic duality in general relativity

By resolving the Riemann curvature relative to a unit timelike vector into electric and magnetic parts, we consider duality relations analogous to the electromagnetic theory. It turns out that the duality symmetry of the Einstein action implies the Einstein vacuum equation without the cosmological term. The vacuum equation is invariant under interchange of active and passive electric parts giving rise to the same vacuum solutions but the gravitational constant changes sign. Further by modifying the equation it is possible to construct interesting dual solutions to vacuum as well as to flat spacetimes.

Gravoelectric-dual of the Kerr solution

By decomposing the Riemann curvature into electric and magnetic parts, we define the gravoelectric duality transformation by interchange of active and passive electric parts which amounts to interchange of the Ricci and Einstein tensors. It turns out that the vacuum equation is duality-invariant. We obtain solutions dual to the Kerr solution by writing an effective vacuum equation in such a way that it still admits the Kerr solution but is not duality invariant. The dual equation is then solved to obtain the dual-Kerr solution which can be interpreted as the Kerr black hole sitting in a string dust universe.

A duality relation for fluid spacetime

We consider the electromagnetic resolution of gravitational field. We show that under the duality transformation, in which active and passive electric parts of the Riemann curvature are interchanged, a fluid spacetime in comoving coordinates remains invariant in its character with density and pressure transforming, while energy flux and anisotropic pressure remaining unaltered. Further if fluid admits a barotropic equation of state, $p = (γ- 1) ρ$ where $1 \leq γ\leq 2$, which will transform to $p = (\frac{2 γ}{3 γ- 2} - 1) ρ$. Clearly the stiff fluid and dust are dual to each-other while $ρ+ 3 p =0$, will go to flat spacetime. However the n $(ρ- 3 p = 0)$ and the deSitter $(ρ+ p = 0$) universes ar e self-dual.

An ansatz for spacetimes of zero gravitational mass : global monopoles and textures

We propose a geometric ansatz, a restriction on Euclidean / Minkowski distance in the embedding space being propotional to distance in the embedded space, to generate spacetimes with vanishing gravitational mass ($R_{ik} u^i u^k = 0, u_i u^i = 1 $). It turns out that these spacetimes can represent global monopoles and textures. Thus the ansatz is a prescription to generate zero mass spacetimes that could describe topological defects, global monopoles and textures.
