An elementary proof that walk dimension is greater than two for Brownian motion on Sierpiński carpets

We give an elementary self-contained proof of the fact that the walk dimension of the Brownian motion on an arbitrary generalized Sierpiński carpet is greater than two, no proof of which in this generality had been available in the literature. Our proof is based solely on the self-similarity and hypercubic symmetry of the associated Dirichlet form and on several very basic pieces of functional analysis and the theory of regular symmetric Dirichlet forms. We also present an application of this fact to the singularity of the energy measures with respect to the canonical self-similar measure (uniform distribution) in this case, proved first by M. Hino in [Probab. Theory Related Fields 132 (2005), no. 2, 265-290].

On the conformal walk dimension: Quasisymmetric uniformization for symmetric diffusions

We introduce the notion of conformal walk dimension, which serves as a bridge between elliptic and parabolic Harnack inequalities. The importance of this notion is due to the fact that, for a given strongly local, regular symmetric Dirichlet space in which every metric ball has compact closure (MMD space), the finiteness of the conformal walk dimension characterizes the conjunction of the metric doubling property and the elliptic Harnack inequality. Roughly speaking, the conformal walk dimension of an MMD space is defined as the infimum over all possible values of the walk dimension with which the parabolic Harnack inequality can be made to hold by a time change of the associated diffusion and by a quasisymmetric change of the metric. We show that the conformal walk dimension of any MMD space satisfying the metric doubling property and the elliptic Harnack inequality is two, and provide a necessary condition for a pair of such changes to attain the infimum defining the conformal walk dimension when it is attained by the original pair. We also prove a necessary condition for the existence of such a pair attaining the infimum in the setting of a self-similar Dirichlet form on a self-similar set, and apply it to show that the infimum fails to be attained for the Vicsek set and the $N$-dimensional Sierpiński gasket with $N\geq 3$, in contrast to the attainment for the two-dimensional Sierpiński gasket due to Kigami [Math. Ann. 340 (2008), no. 4, 781--804].

On singularity of energy measures for symmetric diffusions with full off-diagonal heat kernel estimates

We show that for a strongly local, regular symmetric Dirichlet form over a complete, locally compact geodesic metric space, full off-diagonal heat kernel estimates with walk dimension strictly larger than two (\emph{sub-Gaussian} estimates) imply the singularity of the energy measures with respect to the symmetric measure, verifying a conjecture by M.\ T.\ Barlow in [Contemp.\ Math., vol.\ 338, 2003, pp.\ 11--40]. We also prove that in the contrary case of walk dimension two, i.e., where full off-diagonal \emph{Gaussian} estimates of the heat kernel hold, the symmetric measure and the energy measures are mutually absolutely continuous in the sense that a Borel subset of the state space has measure zero for the symmetric measure if and only if it has measure zero for the energy measures of all functions in the domain of the Dirichlet form.

The Laplacian on some self-conformal fractals and Weyl's asymptotics for its eigenvalues: A survey of the ergodic-theoretic aspects

This short survey is aimed at sketching the ergodic-theoretic aspects of the author's recent studies on Weyl's eigenvalue asymptotics for a \emph{"geometrically canonical" Laplacian} defined by the author on some self-conformal circle packing fractals including the classical \emph{Apollonian gasket}. The main result being surveyed is obtained by applying Kesten's renewal theorem [\emph{Ann.\ Probab.}\ \textbf{2} (1974), 355--386, Theorem 2] for functionals of Markov chains on general state spaces and provides an alternative probabilistic proof of the result by Oh and Shah [\emph{Invent.\ Math.}\ \textbf{187} (2012), 1--35, Corollary 1.8] on the asymptotic distribution of the circles in the Apollonian gasket.

Continuity and estimates of the Liouville heat kernel with applications to spectral dimensions

The Liouville Brownian motion (LBM), recently introduced by Garban, Rhodes and Vargas and in a weaker form also by Berestycki, is a diffusion process evolving in a planar random geometry induced by the Liouville measure $M_γ$, formally written as $M_γ(dz)=e^{γX(z)-{γ^2} \mathbb{E}[X(z)^2]/2}\, dz$, $γ\in(0,2)$, for a (massive) Gaussian free field $X$. It is an $M_γ$-symmetric diffusion defined as the time change of the two-dimensional Brownian motion by the positive continuous additive functional with Revuz measure $M_γ$. In this paper we provide a detailed analysis of the heat kernel $p_t(x,y)$ of the LBM. Specifically, we prove its joint continuity, a locally uniform sub-Gaussian upper bound of the form $p_t(x,y)\leq C_{1} t^{-1} \log(t^{-1}) \exp\bigl(-C_{2}((|x-y|^β\wedge 1)/t)^{\frac{1}{β-1}}\bigr)$ for $t\in(0,\frac{1}{2}]$ for each $β>\frac{1}{2}(γ+2)^2$, and an on-diagonal lower bound of the form $p_{t}(x,x)\geq C_{3}t^{-1}\bigl(\log(t^{-1})\bigr)^{-η}$ for $t\in(0,t_η(x)]$, with $t_η(x)\in(0,\frac{1}{2}]$ heavily dependent on $x$, for each $η>18$ for $M_γ$-almost every $x$. As applications, we deduce that the pointwise spectral dimension equals $2$ $M_γ$-a.e.\ and that the global spectral dimension is also $2$.

Localized upper bounds of heat kernels for diffusions via a multiple Dynkin-Hunt formula

We prove that for a general diffusion process, certain assumptions on its behavior \emph{only within a fixed open subset} of the state space imply the existence and sub-Gaussian type off-diagonal upper bounds of the \emph{global} heat kernel on the fixed open set. The proof is mostly probabilistic and is based on a seemingly new formula, which we call a \emph{multiple Dynkin-Hunt formula}, expressing the transition function of a Hunt process in terms of that of the part process on a given open subset. This result has an application to heat kernel analysis for the \emph{Liouville Brownian motion}, the canonical diffusion in a certain random geometry of the plane induced by a (massive) Gaussian free field.
