Efficient Pairing in Unknown Environments: Minimal Observations and TSP-based Optimization

Generating paired sequences with maximal compatibility from a given set is one of the most important challenges in various applications, including information and communication technologies. However, the number of possible pairings explodes in a double factorial order as a function of the number of entities, manifesting the difficulties of finding the optimal pairing that maximizes the overall reward. In the meantime, in real-world systems, such as user pairing in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), pairing often needs to be conducted at high speed in dynamically changing environments; hence, efficient recognition of the environment and finding high reward pairings are highly demanded. In this paper, we demonstrate an efficient pairing algorithm to recognize compatibilities among elements as well as to find a pairing that yields a high total compatibility. The proposed pairing strategy consists of two phases. The first is the observation phase, where compatibility information among elements is obtained by only observing the sum of rewards. We show an efficient strategy that allows obtaining all compatibility information with minimal observations. The minimum number of observations under these conditions is also discussed, along with its mathematical proof. The second is the combination phase, by which a pairing with a large total reward is determined heuristically. We transform the pairing problem into a traveling salesman problem (TSP) in a three-layer graph structure, which we call Pairing-TSP. We demonstrate heuristic algorithms in solving the Pairing-TSP efficiently. This research is expected to be utilized in real-world applications such as NOMA, social networks, among others.

Fano and weak Fano Hessenberg varieties

Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are smooth subvarieties of the flag variety, and their examples contain the flag variety itself and the permutohedral variety which is a toric variety. We give a complete classification of Fano and weak Fano regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in type A in terms of combinatorics of Hessenberg functions. In particular, we show that if the anti-canonical bundle of a regular semisimple Hessenberg variety is nef, then it is in fact nef and big.

Schubert calculus from polyhedral parametrizations of Demazure crystals

One approach to Schubert calculus is to realize Schubert classes as concrete combinatorial objects such as Schubert polynomials. Through an identification of the cohomology ring of the type A full flag variety with the polytope ring of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin realized each Schubert class as a sum of reduced (dual) Kogan faces. In this paper, we explicitly describe string parametrizations of opposite Demazure crystals, which give a natural generalization of reduced dual Kogan faces. We also relate reduced Kogan faces with Demazure crystals using the theory of mitosis operators, and apply these observations to develop the theory of Schubert calculus on symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes.

Newton-Okounkov bodies for Bott-Samelson varieties and string polytopes for generalized Demazure modules

A Newton-Okounkov convex body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a valuation on its homogeneous coordinate ring; this generalizes a Newton polytope for a toric variety. This convex body has various kinds of information about the original projective variety; for instance, Kaveh showed that the string polytopes from representation theory are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Schubert varieties. In this paper, we extend the notion of string polytopes for Demazure modules to generalized Demazure modules, and prove that the resulting generalized string polytopes are identical to the Newton-Okounkov bodies for Bott-Samelson varieties with respect to a specific valuation. As an application of this result, we show that these are indeed polytopes.

Newton-Okounkov convex bodies of Schubert varieties and polyhedral realizations of crystal bases

A Newton-Okounkov convex body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a valuation on its homogeneous coordinate ring; this is deeply connected with representation theory. For instance, the Littelmann string polytopes and the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes are examples of Newton-Okounkov convex bodies. In this paper, we prove that the Newton-Okounkov convex body of a Schubert variety with respect to a specific valuation is identical to the Nakashima-Zelevinsky polyhedral realization of a Demazure crystal. As an application of this result, we show that Kashiwara's involution (*-operation) corresponds to a change of valuations on the rational function field.
