Orbital Period Variations in Eclipsing Post Common Envelope Binaries

We present high speed ULTRACAM photometry of the eclipsing post common envelope binaries DE CVn, GK Vir, NN Ser, QS Vir, RR Cae, RX J2130.6+4710, SDSS 0110+1326 and SDSS 0303+0054 and use these data to measure precise mid-eclipse times in order to detect any period variations. We detect a large (~ 250 sec) departure from linearity in the eclipse times of QS Vir which Applegate's mechanism fails to reproduce by an order of magnitude. The only mechanism able to drive this period change is a third body in a highly elliptical orbit. However, the planetary/sub-stellar companion previously suggested to exist in this system is ruled out by our data. Our eclipse times show that the period decrease detected in NN Ser is continuing, with magnetic braking or a third body the only mechanisms able to explain this change. The planetary/sub-stellar companion previously suggested to exist in NN Ser is also ruled out by our data. Our precise eclipse times also lead to improved ephemerides for DE CVn and GK Vir. The width of a primary eclipse is directly related to the size of the secondary star and variations in the size of this star could be an indication of Applegate's mechanism or Wilson (starspot) depressions which can cause jitter in the O-C curves. We measure the width of primary eclipses for the systems NN Ser and GK Vir over several years but find no definitive variations in the radii of the secondary stars. However, our data are precise enough (dRsec / Rsec < 10^-5) to show the effects of Applegate's mechanism in the future. We find no evidence of Wilson depressions in either system. We also find tentative indications that flaring rates of the secondary stars depend on their mass rather than rotation rates.

New Coherent String States and Minimal Uncertainty in WZWN Models

We study the properties of {\bf exact} (all level $k$) quantum coherent states in the context of string theory on a group manifold (WZWN models). Coherent states of WZWN models may help to solve the unitarity problem: Having positive norm, they consistently describe the very massive string states (otherwise excluded by the spin-level condition). These states can be constructed by (at least) two alternative procedures: (i) as the exponential of the creation operator on the ground state, and (ii) as eigenstates of the annhilation operator. In the $k\to\infty$ limit, all the known properties of ordinary coherent states are recovered. States (i) and (ii) (which are equivalent in the context of ordinary quantum mechanics and string theory in flat spacetime) are not equivalent in the context of WZWN models. The set (i) was constructed by these authors in a previous article. In this paper we provide the construction of states (ii), we compare the two sets and discuss their properties. We analyze the uncertainty relation, and show that states (ii) satisfy automatically the {\it minimal uncertainty} condition for any $k$; they are thus {\it quasiclassical}, in some sense more classical than states (i) which only satisfy it in the $k\to\infty$ limit. Modification to the Heisenberg relation is given by $2 {\cal H}/k$, where ${\cal H}$ is connected to the string energy.

Fractal Dimensions and Scaling Laws in the Interstellar Medium and Galaxy Distributions: a new Field Theory Approach

We develop a field theoretical approach to the cold interstellar medium (ISM) and large structure of the universe. We show that a non-relativistic self- gravitating gas in thermal equilibrium with variable number of atoms or fragments is exactly equivalent to a field theory of a scalar field phi(x) with exponential self-interaction. We analyze this field theory perturbatively and non-perturbatively through the renormalization group(RG).We show scaling behaviour (critical) for a continuous range of the physical parameters as the temperature. We derive in this framework the scaling relation M(R) \sim R^{d_H} for the mass on a region of size R, and Delta v \sim R^\frac12(d_H -1) for the velocity dispersion. For the density-density correlations we find a power-law behaviour for large distances \sim |r_1 - r_2|^{2D - 6}.The fractal dimension D turns to be related with the critical exponent νby D = 1/ ν. Mean field theory yields ν= 1/2, D = 2. Both the Ising and the mean field values are compatible with the present ISM observational data:1.4\leq D \leq 2. We develop a field theoretical approach to the galaxy distribution considering a gas of self-gravitating masses on the FRW background, in quasi-thermal equi- librium. We show that it exhibits scaling behaviour by RG methods. The galaxy correlations are computed without assuming homogeneity. We find <ρ({\vec r_0})ρ({\vec r_0} + {\vec r}) > \sim r^{D-3} $. The theory allows to compute the three and higher density correlators without any assumption. We find that the connected N-points density scales as r_1^{N(D-3)}, when $ r_1 >> r_i, 2\leq i \leq N $. There are no free parameters in this theory.

From the WZWN Model to the Liouville Equation: Exact String Dynamics in Conformally Invariant AdS Background

It has been known for some time that the SL(2,R) WZWN model reduces to Liouville theory. Here we give a direct and physical derivation of this result based on the classical string equations of motion and the proper string size. This allows us to extract precisely the physical effects of the metric and antisymmetric tensor, respectively, on the {\it exact} string dynamics in the SL(2,R) background. The general solution to the proper string size is also found. We show that the antisymmetric tensor (corresponding to conformal invariance) generally gives rise to repulsion, and it precisely cancels the dominant attractive term arising from the metric. Both the sinh-Gordon and the cosh-Gordon sectors of the string dynamics in non-conformally invariant AdS spacetime reduce here to the Liouville equation (with different signs of the potential), while the original Liouville sector reduces to the free wave equation. Only the very large classical string size is affected by the torsion. Medium and small size string behaviours are unchanged. We also find illustrative classes of string solutions in the SL(2,R) background: dynamical closed as well as stationary open spiralling strings, for which the effect of torsion is somewhat like the effect of rotation in the metric. Similarly, the string solutions in the 2+1 BH-AdS background with torsion and angular momentum are fully analyzed.

Quantum String Dynamics in the conformal invariant SL(2,R) WZWN Background: Anti-de Sitter Space with Torsion

We consider classical and quantum strings in the conformally invariant background corresponding to the SL(2,R) WZWN model. This background is locally anti-de Sitter spacetime with non-vanishing torsion. Conformal invariance is expressed as the torsion being parallelized. The precise effect of the conformal invariance on the dynamics of both circular and generic classical strings is extracted. In particular, the conformal invariance gives rise to a repulsive interaction of the string with the background which precisely cancels the dominant attractive term arising from gravity. We perform both semi-classical and canonical string-quantization, in order to see the effect of the conformal invariance of the background on the string mass spectrum. Both approaches yield that the high-mass states are governed by m sim HN (N,`large integer'), where m is the string mass and H is the Hubble constant. It follows that the level spacing grows proportionally to N: d(m^2 alpha')/dN sim N, while the entropy goes like: S sim sqrt{m}. Moreover, it follows that there is no Hagedorn temperature,so that the partition function is well defined at any positive temperature. All results are compared with the analogue results in Anti- de Sitter spacetime, which is a non conformal invariant background. Conformal invariance simplifies the mathematics of the problem but the physics remains mainly unchanged. Differences between conformal and non-conformal backgrounds only appear in the intermediate region of the string spectrum, but these differences are minor. For low and high masses, the string mass spectra in conformal and non-conformal backgrounds are identical. Interestingly enough, conformal invariance fixes the value of the spacetime curvature to be -69/(26 alpha').

The fractal structure of the universe : a new field theory approach

While the universe becomes more and more homogeneous at large scales, statistical analysis of galaxy catalogs have revealed a fractal structure at small-scales (λ< 100 h^{-1} Mpc), with a fractal dimension D=1.5-2 (Sylos Labini et al 1996). We study the thermodynamics of a self-gravitating system with the theory of critical phenomena and finite-size scaling and show that gravity provides a dynamical mechanism to produce this fractal structure. We develop a field theoretical approach to compute the galaxy distribution, assuming them to be in quasi-isothermal equilibrium. Only a limited, (although large), range of scales is involved, between a short-distance cut-off below which other physics intervene, and a large-distance cut-off, where the thermo- dynamic equilibrium is not satisfied. The galaxy ensemble can be considered at critical conditions, with large density fluctuations developping at any scale. From the theory of critical phenomena, we derive the two independent critical exponents nu and eta and predict the fractal dimension D = 1/nu to be either 1.585 or 2, depending on whether the long-range behaviour is governed by the Ising or the mean field fixed points, respectively. Both set of values are compatible with present observations. In addition, we predict the scaling behaviour of the gravitational potential to be r^{-(1 + eta)/2}. That is, r^{-0.5} for mean field or r^{- 0.519} for the Ising fixed point. The theory allows to compute the three and higher density correlators without any assumption or Ansatz. We find that the N-points density scales as r_1^{(N-1)(D-3)}, when r_1 >> r_i, 2 leq i leq N . There are no free parameters in this theory.

Self-gravity as an explanation of the fractal structure of the interstellar medium

The gas clouds of the interstellar medium have a fractal structure, the origin of which has generally been thought to lie in turbulence. The energy of turbulence could come from galactic rotation at large-scale, then cascade down to be dissipated on small-scales by viscosity; it has been suggested that such turbulence helps to prevent massive molecular clouds from collapsing in response to their own gravity. Here we show that, on the contrary, self-gravity itself may be the dominant factor in making clouds fractal. We develop a field-theory approach to the structure of clouds, assuming them to be isothermal, and with only gravitational interactions; we find that the observed fractal dimension of the clouds arise naturally from this approach. Although this result does not imply that turbulence is not important, it does demonstrate that the fractal structure can be understood without it.

Circular Strings and Multi-Strings in de Sitter and Anti de Sitter Spacetimes

The exact general solution of circular strings in $2+1$ dimensional de Sitter spacetime is described completely in terms of elliptic functions. The novel feature here is that one single world-sheet generically describes {\it infinitely many} (different and independent) strings. This has no analogue in flat spacetime. The circular strings are either oscillating ("stable") or indefinitely expanding ("unstable"). We then compute the {\it exact} equation of state of circular strings in the $2+1$ dimensional de Sitter (dS) and anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, and analyze its properties for the different (oscillating, contracting and expanding) strings. We finally perform a semi-classical quantization of the oscillating circular strings. We find the mass formula $α'm^2_{\mbox{dS}}\approx 4n-5H^2α'n^2,\;(n\in N_0),$ and a {\it finite} number of states $N_{\mbox{dS}}\approx 0.34/(H^2α')$ in de Sitter spacetime; $m^2_{\mbox{AdS}}\approx H^2n^2$ (large $n\in N$) and $N_{\mbox{AdS}}=\infty$ in anti de Sitter spacetime. The level spacing grows with $n$ in AdS spacetime, while is approximately constant (although smaller than in Minkowski spacetime and slightly decreasing) in dS spacetime.

CLASSICAL SPLITTING OF FUNDAMENTAL STRINGS

We find exact solutions of the string equations of motion and constraints describing the {\em classical}\ splitting of a string into two. We show that for the same Cauchy data, the strings that split have {\bf smaller} action than the string without splitting. This phenomenon is already present in flat space-time. The mass, energy and momentum carried out by the strings are computed. We show that the splitting solution describes a natural decay process of one string of mass $M$ into two strings with a smaller total mass and some kinetic energy. The standard non-splitting solution is contained as a particular case. We also describe the splitting of a closed string in the background of a singular gravitational plane wave, and show how the presence of the strong gravitational field increases (and amplifies by an overall factor) the negative difference between the action of the splitting and non-splitting solutions.

Strings and Multi-Strings in Black Hole and Cosmological Spacetimes

Recent results on classical and quantum strings in a variety of black hole and cosmological spacetimes, in various dimensions, are presented. The curved backgrounds under consideration include the $2+1$ black hole anti de Sitter spacetime and its dual, the black string, the ordinary $D\geq 4$ black holes with or without a cosmological constant, the de Sitter and anti de Sitter spacetimes and static Robertson-Walker spacetimes. Exact solutions to the string equations of motion and constraints are obtained in these backgrounds and their physical properties (length, energy, pressure) are described. The existence of {\it multi-string} solutions, describing finitely or infinitely many strings, is shown to be a general feature of spacetimes with a positive or negative cosmological constant. Furthermore, using a canonical quantization procedure, we find the string mass spectrum in de Sitter and anti de Sitter spacetimes. New features as compared to the string spectrum in flat Minkowski spacetime appear, for instance the {\it fine-structure effect} at all levels beyond the graviton in both de Sitter and anti de Sitter spacetimes, and the {\it non-existence} of a Hagedorn temperature in anti de Sitter spacetime. Finally, we consider the effect of spatial curvature on the string dynamics in Robertson-Walker spacetimes.

The General Solution of the 2-D Sigma Model Stringy Black Hole and the Massless Complex Sine-Gordon Model

The exact general solution for a sigma model having the $2-d$ stringy black hole (SBH) as internal manifold is found in closed form. We also give the exact solution for the massless complex Sine-Gordon (MCSG) model. Both, models and their solutions are related by analytic continuation. The solution is expressed in terms of four arbitrary functions of one variable. (hep-th 9312085).
