Improved access to the fine-structure constant with the simplest atomic systems

A means to extract the fine-structure constant $α$ from precision spectroscopic data on one-electron ions is presented. We show that in an appropriately weighted difference of the bound-electron $g$ factor and the ground state energy, nuclear structural effects can be effectively suppressed. This method is anticipated to deliver an independent value of $α$ via existing or near-future combined Penning trap and x-ray spectroscopic technology, and enables decreasing the uncertainty of $α$ by orders of magnitude.

QED corrections to the $g$ factor of Li- and B-like ions

QED corrections to the $g$ factor of Li-like and B-like ions in a wide range of nuclear charges are presented. Many-electron contributions as well as radiative effects on the one-loop level are calculated. Contributions resulting from the interelectronic interaction, the self-energy effect, and most of the terms of the vacuum-polarization effect are evaluated to all orders in the nuclear coupling strength $Zα$. Uncertainties resulting from nuclear size effects, numerical computations, and uncalculated effects are discussed.

Relativistic effective charge model of a multi-electron atom

A relativistic version of the effective charge model for computation of observable characteristics of multi-electron atoms and ions is developed. A complete and orthogonal Dirac hydrogen basis set, depending on one parameter -- effective nuclear charge $Z^{*}$ -- identical for all single-electron wave functions of a given atom or ion, is employed for the construction of the secondary-quantized representation. The effective charge is uniquely determined by the charge of the nucleus and a set of electron occupation numbers for a given state. We thoroughly study the accuracy of the leading-order approximation for the total binding energy and demonstrate that it is independent of the number of electrons of a multi-electron atom. In addition, it is shown that the fully analytical leading-order approximation is especially suited for the description of highly charged ions since our wave functions are almost coincident with the Dirac-Hartree-Fock ones for the complete spectrum. Finally, we evaluate various atomic characteristics, such as scattering factors and photoionization cross-sections, and thus envisage that the effective charge model can replace other models of comparable complexity, such as the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac model for all applications where it is still utilized.

The measurement of the quadrupole moment of 185-Re and 187-Re from the hyperfine structure of muonic X rays

The hyperfine splitting of the 5g -> 4f transitions in muonic 185,187-Re has been measured using high resolution HPGe detectors and compared to state-of-the-art atomic theoretical predictions. The spectroscopic quadrupole moment has been extracted using modern fitting procedures and compared to the values available in literature obtained from muonic X rays of natural rhenium. The extracted values of the nuclear spectroscopic quadrupole moment are 2.07(5) barn and 1.94(5) barn, respectively for 185-Re and 187-Re. This work is part of a larger effort at the Paul Scherrer Institut towards the measurement of the nuclear charge radii of radioactive elements.

Theory of the two-loop self-energy correction to the $\boldsymbol g$ factor in non-perturbative Coulomb fields

Two-loop self-energy corrections to the bound-electron $g$ factor are investigated theoretically to all orders in the nuclear binding strength parameter $Zα$. The separation of divergences is performed by dimensional regularization, and the contributing diagrams are regrouped into specific categories to yield finite results. We evaluate numerically the loop-after-loop terms, and the remaining diagrams by treating the Coulomb interaction in the electron propagators up to first order. The results show that such two-loop terms are mandatory to take into account for projected near-future stringent tests of quantum electrodynamics and for the determination of fundamental constants through the $g$ factor.

Nuclear Shape Effect on the g Factor of Hydrogenlike Ions

The nuclear shape correction to the g factor of a bound electron in 1S-state is calculated for a number of nuclei in the range of charge numbers from Z=6 up to Z=92. The leading relativistic deformation correction has been derived analytically and also its influence on one-loop quantum electrodynamic terms has been evaluated. We show the leading corrections to become significant for mid-Z ions and for very heavy elements to even reach the 10^(-6) level.

QED Effects in Heavy Few-Electron Ions

Accurate calculations of the binding energies, the hyperfine splitting, the bound-electron g-factor, and the parity nonconservation effects in heavy few-electron ions are considered. The calculations include the relativistic, quantum electrodynamic (QED), electron-correlation, and nuclear effects. The theoretical results are compared with available experimental data. A special attention is focused on tests of QED in a strong Coulomb field.
