Active-Sterile neutrino masses and mixings in $A_4$ minimal extended seesaw mechanism

Assuming the existence of an eV or KeV scale sterile neutrino, we develop a 3+1 neutrino mass model using $A_4\times Z_4 \times Z_2$ symmetry group. Three Higgs $H, H^{\prime}$ and $H^{\prime\prime}$ are considered to give a desired neutrino mass matrix which generates non-zero $θ_{13}$. The model can give neutrino mixing parameters that are well within the experimental 3$σ$ bounds. We also calculate the $4\times 4$ active-sterile neutrino mixing matrix, and it is found to be consistent with experimental bounds.

Deviation from Tribimaximal mixing using $A_{4}$ flavour model with five extra scalars

A modified neutrino mass model with five extra scalars is constructed using $A_{4}$ discrete symmetry group. The resultant mass matrix is able to give necessary deviation from Tribimaximal mixing which reproduces the current neutrino masses and mixing data with good accuracy. The model gives testable prediction for the future measurements of the neutrinoless double-beta decay parameter $|m_{ββ}|$. The analysis is consistent with latest cosmological bound $Σm_{i}\leq$ 0.12 eV.

Effects of variations of SUSY breaking scale on neutrino parameters at low energy scale under radiative corrections

The paper addresses the effects of the variations of the SUSY breaking scale $m_s$ in the range (2-14) TeV on the three neutrino masses and mixings, in running the renormalization group equations (RGEs) for different input values of high energy seesaw scale $M_R$, in both normal and inverted hierarchical neutrino mass models. The present investigation is a continuation of the earlier works based on the variation of $m_s$ scale. Two approaches are adopted one after another - bottom-up approach for running gauge and Yukawa couplings from low to high energy scale, followed by the top-down approach from high to low energy scale for running neutrino parameters defined at high energy scale, along with gauge and Yukawa couplings. A self-complementarity relation among three mixing angles is also employed in the analysis. Significant effect due to radiative corrections on neutrino parameters with the variation of SUSY breaking scale $m_s$, is observed.

Generating nonzero $θ_{13}$ without breaking the $2$-$3$ symmetry of neutrino mass matrix

The prediction of vanishing reactor angle was thought to be a signature of $2$-$3$ symmetry of neutrino mass matrix. But the present study addresses certain interesting facts related with $2$-$3$ symmetry which are not addressed so far. The investigation highlights that $θ_{13}=0$, corresponds to a very special case in association with $2$-$3$ symmetry and to engender a non-zero $θ_{13}$, the breakdown of $2$-$3$ symmetry is not essential.

Modulated bimaximal neutrino mixing

The present article is an endeavor to look into some fruitful frameworks based on "Bi-maximal" neutrino mixing, from a model independent stand. The possibilities involving the correction or attenuation of the original BM mixing matrix, followed by GUT-inspired charged lepton correction are invoked. The "symmetry-basis" thus constructed, accentuates some interesting facets such as: a modified QLC relation, $θ_{12}+θ_{c}\approx\fracπ{4}-θ_{13}\cos(nπ-δ_{CP})$, a possible link up between neutrino and charged lepton sectors, $θ_{13}^ν=θ_{12}^{l}\sim\mathcal{O}(θ_{C})$ or that between neutrinos and quarks, $θ_{13}^ν=θ_{C}$. The study vindicates the relevance of the Bi-maximal mixing as a first approximation.

The mixing angle as a function of neutrino mass ratio

In the quark sector, we experience a correlation between the mixing angles and the mass ratios. A partial realization of the similar tie-up in the neutrino sector helps to constrain the parametrization of masses and mixing, and hints for a predictive framework. We derive five hierarchy dependent textures of neutrino mass matrix with minimum number of parameters ($\leq\,4$), following a model-independent strategy.

On the ambiguities in the tri-bimaximal mixing matrix and corresponding charged lepton corrections

Two negative signs naturally appear in the $U_{μ1}$ and $U_{τ2}$ elements of the Tri-bimaximal (TBM) matrix for positive values of the mixing angles $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$. Apart from this, in other TBM matrices negative signs are shifted to other elements in each case. They account for positive as well as negative values of $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$. We discuss the sign ambiguity in the TBM matrix and find that the TBM matrices, in fact, can be divided into two groups under certain circumstances. Interestingly, this classification of TBM matrices is accompanied by two different $μ-τ$ symmetric mass matrices which can separately be related to the groups. To accommodate non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ and deviate $θ_{23}$ towards first octant, we then perturb the TBM mixing ansatz with the help of charged lepton correction. The diagonalizing matrices for charged lepton mass matrices also possess sign ambiguity and respect the grouping of TBM matrices. They are parametrized in terms of the Wolfenstein parameter $λ$ and satisfy unitarity condition up to second order in $λ$.

Parametrization of lepton mixing matrix in terms of deviations from bi-maximal and tri-bimaximl mixing

We parametrize lepton mixing matrix, known as PMNS matrix, in terms of three parameters which account deviations of three mixing angles from their bi-maximal or tri-bimaximal values. On the basis of this parametrization we can determine corresponding charged lepton mixing matrix in terms of those three parameters which can deviate bi-maximal or tri-bimaximal mixing. We find that the charged lepton mixing matrices which can deviate bi-maximal mixing matrix and tri-bimaximal mixing matrix exhibit similar structures. Numerical analysis shows that these charged lepton mixing matrices are close to CKM matrix of quark sector.

Leptonic mixing matrix in terms of Cabibbo angle

We phenomenologically build a neutrino mass matrix obeying $μ-τ$ symmetry with only two parameters, Cabibbo angle $(λ)$ and a flavour twister parameter $(η)$. For vanishing $η$, the model assumes TBM mixing. When $η=λ$, the model generates a solar mixing angle and solar mass squared difference that coincide with the experimental best-fits. It motivates us to propose a mixing matrix in the neutrino sector with $ sinθ_{12}<\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}$, $θ_{13}=0$ and $θ_{23}=π/4$. The corrections in $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ are conducted following the breaking of $μ-τ$ symmetry, by choosing a proper unitary diagonalizing charged lepton matrix, and this ensures that $θ_{23}$ lies within the first octant. The Cabibbo angle $(λ=\sinθ_{c})$ plays the role of a guiding parameter in both neutrino as well as leptonic sector. The effect of the Dirac CP violating phase $δ_{cp}$ is also studied when it enters either through the charged lepton diagonalizing matrix or through neutrino mixing matrix.

A new method of parametrisation of neutrino mass matrix through breaking of $μ-τ$ symmetry: Normal hierarchy

In the first part of the present work the $μ-τ$ symmetry of the neutrino mass matrix is perturbed at its minimal level in order to produce deviation from Tri-bimaximal mixing (TBM), which includes nonzero value of reactor angle $θ_{13}$ and maximal condition of $\tan^{2}θ_{23}=1$. The parametrisation of neutrino mass matrix which describes Normal hierarchy (NH), has been addressed with minimum number of independent parameters, out of which two parameters $η$ and $α$ take care of $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{13}$ respectively without any interference with mass eigenvalues. In the second part the deviation from maximal condition $\tan^{2}θ_{23}=1$, along with the nonzero value of $θ_{13}$, has been implemented with the introduction of a perturbing matrix which breaks the $μ-τ$ symmetric mass matrix. The model is found to be flexible enough to adjust itself with the changing precise experimental results. The method is also applicable for inverted hierarchy and quasi-degenerate cases.

Bi-Large neutrino mixing with charged lepton correction

The usual Bi-Maximal (BM) neutrino mixing faces an inherent problem in lowering the solar mixing angle below $\tan^{2}θ_{12}=0.50$ when charged lepton correction is taken. This minimum $θ_{12}$ is achievable only if CP violation is absent. We start with a new model which incorporates a new idea of mixing developed recently, called Bi-Large (BL) mixing, similar to BM mixing execpt that the former chooses rather $θ_{13}$ as Cabibbo angle $(θ_c)$ than zero. We apply this mixing in the neutrino sector, followed by a charged lepton correction with the CKM type matrix $U_{l}$. This model marks a prediction on $θ_{23}$ to lie within the first octant. The CP violating phase $δ_{CP}$ dictates the prediction of all the three mixing angles. A proper choice of $δ_{CP}$ leads to the predictions of all the three mixing angles including $θ_{12}$, to align very precisely with the experimental bestfits. This close agreement thus hoists Bi-Large mixing as an important and promising mixing scheme, in contrast to BM or TBM mixing as a first approximation. A formal derivation of BL mixing from discrete symmetry will be an important investigation in neutrino physics.

Charged lepton contributions to bimaximal and tri-bimaximal mixings for generating $\sinθ_{13}\neq 0$ and $\tan^2θ_{23}<1$

Bimaximal (BM) and tri-bimaximal (TB) mixings of neutrinos are two special cases of lepton mixing matrix, which predict the reactor angle $θ_{13}=0$ and the atmospheric angle $\tan^2θ_{23}=1$. Recent precision measurements and global analysis of oscillation parameters, have confirmed a non-vanishing value of $θ_{13}$ as well as deviations of $θ_{12}$ and $θ_{23}$ from their maximal values predicted by BM or TB mixing. In this work we mainly concentrate on $θ_{13}$ and $θ_{23}$ to assign $\sinθ_{13}\neq 0$ and $\tan^2θ_{23}<1$ with the help of charged lepton corrections defined by $U_{PMNS}=U^{\dagger}_lU_ν$. We first consider $U_ν$ to be given separately by BM and TB mixing matrices and then find the possible forms of $U_l}$ such that the elements of PMNS matrix, finally yield $\sinθ_{13}\neq 0$ and $\tan^2θ_{23}<1$. To compute the values of mixing angles we assume the charged lepton correction to be of CKM-like. All the mixing matrices considered here satisfy the unitarity condition to leading order of expansion parameters. We also analyze both the mixing schemes in presence of Dirac CP phase and find expressions for the rephasing invariant quantity $J_{CP}$ which have been discussed in recent literature.

Dependence of $\tan^2 θ_{12}$ on Dirac CP phase $δ$ in tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing under charged lepton correction

We consider charged lepton correction to Tri-bimaximal(TBM) neutrino mixing, defined by the relation $U_{PMNS}=U^{\dagger}_l U_{TB}$ and find possible form of $U_l$ which can impart non-zero value of $\sin θ_{13}$ as well as $\tan^2 θ_{23}<1$, consistent with latest global analysis data. We adopt a new parametrization, other than the standard PDG parametrization, to introduce Dirac CP violating phase $δ$ in the PMNS matrix which is discussed by Fritzsch. Under such charged lepton correction pattern we note that $\tan^2 θ_{12}$ becomes dependent on the CP phase $δ$ from where constraints on $δ$ phase can be obtained after employing experimental range of mixing angles. To compute the values of mixing angles we assume the charged lepton correction to be of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa(CKM) like. Since all the mixing matrices involved in the calculation, are derived from three dimensional rotation matrices they satisfy unitarity condition.

Expansion of $U_{PMNS}$ and Neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ in terms of $sinθ_{13}$ for Inverted Hierarchical case

The recent observational data supports the deviation from Tri-bimaximal (TBM) mixings. Different neutrino mass models suggest the interdependency among the observational parameters involving the mixing angles. On phenomenological ground we try to construct the PMNS matrix $U_{PMNS}$ with certain analytic structure satisfying the unitary condition, in terms of a single observational parameter $sinθ_{13}$. We hypothesise the three neutrino masses $m_{i}$ as functions of $sinθ_{13}$ and then construct the neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$. We assume the convergence of the model to TBM mixing when $θ_{13}$ is taken zero. This mass matrix so far obtained can be employed for various applications including the estimation of matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe.

Quasi-Degenerate Neutrino Masses with Normal and Inverted Hierarchy

The effects of CP-phases on the three absolute quasi-degenerate Majorana neutrino (QDN) masses are stud-ied with neutrino mass matrices obeying μ - τ symmetry for normal as well as inverted hierarchical mass patterns. We have made further investigations on 1) the prediction of solar mixing angle which lies below tri-bimaximal mixing value in consistent with neutrino oscillation observational data, 2) the prediction on absolute neutrino mass parameter (mee) in 0νββ decay, and 3) cosmological bound on the sum of the three absolute neutrino masses. The numerical analysis is carried out through the parameterization of neu- trino mass matrices using only two unknown parameters (ε, η) within μ - τ symmetry. The results show the validity of QDN mass models in both normal and inverted hierarchical patterns. These models are far from discrimination and hence not yet ruled out. The results presented in this article are new and have subtle ef- fects in the discrimination of neutrino mass models.

Validity of quasi-degenerate neutrino mass models and their predictions on baryogenesis

Quasi-degenerate neutrino mass models (QDN) which can explain the current data on neutrino masses and mixings, are studied. In the first part, we study the effect of CP-phases on QDN mass matrix obeying $μ-τ$ symmetry in normal hierarchical (QD-NH) and inverted hierarchical (QD-IH) patterns. The numerical predictions are consistent with observed data on solar mixing angle, absolute neutrino mass parameter consistent with neutrinoless double beta decay mass parameter and sum of three absolute neutrino masses from cosmological bound. The neutrino mass matrix is parameterized using only two unknown parameters. The second part deals with the estimation of observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. The prediction is nearly consistent with observation with flavoured thermal leptogenesis scenario. QD-NH model appears to be more favourable than those of QD-IH models. The present analysis shows that the three absolute neutrino masses may exhibit quasi-degenerate pattern in nature. They are far from discrimination at the moment.

Right-handed Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrices for Generating Bimaximal Mixings in Degenerate and Inverted Models of Neutrinos

An attempt is made to generate the bimaximal mixings of the three species of neutrinos from the textures of the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices. We extend our earlier work in this paper for the generation of the nearly degenerate as well as the inverted hierarchical models of the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices using the non-diagonal textures of the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices and the diagonal form of the Dirac neutrino mass matrices, within the frame work of the seesaw mechanism in a model independent way. Such Majorana neutrino mass models are important to explain the recently reported result on the neutrinoless double beat decay (0/nu/beta/beta) experiment, together with the earlier established data on LMA MSW solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations.

Degenerate and Inverted Hierarchical Models of Majorana Neutrinos from See-saw Mechanism

In order to explain the recently reported result on the double beta decay $(0νββ)$ experiment, together with the earlier established data on LMA MSW solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, we generate the textures of the nearly degenerate as well as the inverted hierarchical models of the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices within the framework of the see-saw mechanism in a model independent way. The leptonic mixings are generated from the texture of the right- handed Majorana mass matrices while keeping the Dirac neutrino mass matrices in diagonal forms.

Predictive Framework with a Pair of Degenerate Neutrinos at a high scale

Radiative generation of the solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ is discussed in the presence of leptonic CP violation. We assume that both the solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are zero at a high scale and the weak radiative corrections generate them. It is shown that all leptonic mass matrices satisfying these requirements lead to a unique prediction $Δ_{\odot} \cos 2θ_{\odot}\approx 4 δ_τ\sin^2 θ_A |m_{ee}|^2$ for the solar scale in terms of the radiative correction parameter $δ_τ$, the physical solar (atmospheric) mixing angles $θ_{odot} (θ_A)$ and the Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This relation is independent of the mixing matrix and CP-violating phases at the high scale. The presence of CP-violating phases leads to dilution in the solar mixing angle defined at the high scale. Because of this, bi-maximal mixing pattern at the high energy leads to large but non-maximal solar mixing in the low-energy theory. An illustrative model with this feature is discussed.

Bimaximal Mixings from the Texture of the Right-handed Majorana Neutrino Mass Matrix

We study the origin of neutrino masses and mixing angles which can accomodate the LMA MSW solutions of the solar neutrino anomaly as well as the solution of the atmospheric neutrino problem, within the framework of the see-saw mechanism. We employ the diagonal form of the Dirac neutrino mass matrices with the physical masses as diagonal elements in the hierarchical order. Such choice has been motivated from the fact that the known CKM angles for the quark sector, are relatively small. We consider both possibilities where the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is either the charged lepton or the up-quark mass matrix within the framework of SO(10) GUT with or without supersymmetry. The non-zero texture of the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_{R}$ is used for the generation of the desired bimaximal mixings in a model independent way. Both hierarchical and inverted hierarchical models of the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices are generated and then discussed with examples.
