Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the $e^+e^-$ collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=10.52$ GeV is reported. The hadronic $e^+e^-$ annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Reexamination of $^{6}$Li scattering as a Probe to Investigate the Isoscalar Giant Resonances in Nuclei

Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb. It was found that the monopole strength in ${}^{12}$C exhausts $52 \pm 3^\text{(stat.)} \pm 8 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous $α$-scattering experiments. The monopole strength in ${}^{93}$Nb exhausts $92 \pm 4^\text{(stat.)} \pm 10 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of $A\approx90$. Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

Search for the Decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays $B_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η$ proceed via tree-level $b\to u$ and penguin $b\to s$ transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays $B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} $ are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for $B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime}$ has been measured so far.

Variable stars in the Sh 2-170 HII region

We present multi-epoch deep ($\sim$20 mag) $I_{c}$~band photometric monitoring of the Sh 2-170 star-forming region to understand the variability properties of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. We report identification of 47 periodic and 24 non-periodic variable stars with periods and amplitudes ranging from $\sim$4 hrs to 18 days and from $\sim$0.1 to 2.0 mag, respectively. We have further classified 49 variables as PMS stars (17 Class\,{\sc ii} and 32 Class\,{\sc iii}) and 17 as main-sequence (MS)/field star variables. A larger fraction of MS/field variables (88\%) show periodic variability as compared to the PMS variables (59\%). The ages and masses of the PMS variable stars are found to be comparable with those of T-Tauri stars. Their variability amplitudes show an increasing trend with the near-IR/mid-IR excess. The period distribution of the PMS variables shows two peaks, one near $\sim$1.5 days and the other near $\sim$4.5 days. It is found that the younger stars with thicker discs and envelopes seem to rotate slower than their older counterparts. These properties of the PMS variables support the disc-locking mechanism. Both the period and amplitude of PMS stars show decrease with increasing mass probably due to the effective dispersal of circumstellar discs in massive stars. Our results favour the notion that cool spots on weak line T-Tauri stars are responsible for most of their variations, while hot spots on classical T-Tauri stars resulting from variable mass accretion from an inner disc contribute to their larger amplitudes and irregular behaviours.

Electromagnetic properties of $^{21}$O for benchmarking nuclear Hamiltonians

The structure of exotic nuclei provides valuable tests for state-of-the-art nuclear theory. In particular electromagnetic transition rates are more sensitive to aspects of nuclear forces and many-body physics than excitation energies alone. We report the first lifetime measurement of excited states in $^{21}$O, finding $τ_{1/2^+}=420^{+35}_{-32}\text{(stat)}^{+34}_{-12}\text{(sys)}$\,ps. This result together with the deduced level scheme and branching ratio of several $γ$-ray decays are compared to both phenomenological shell-model and ab initio calculations based on two- and three-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective field theory. We find that the electric quadrupole reduced transition probability of $\rm B(E2;1/2^+ \rightarrow 5/2^+_{g.s.}) = 0.71^{+0.07\ +0.02}_{-0.06\ -0.06}$~e$^2$fm$^4$, derived from the lifetime of the $1/2^+$ state, is smaller than the phenomenological result where standard effective charges are employed, suggesting the need for modifications of the latter in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. We compare this result to both large-space and valence-space ab initio calculations, and by using multiple input interactions we explore the sensitivity of this observable to underlying details of nuclear forces.

Large scale star formation in Auriga region

New observations in the $VI$ bands along with archival data from the 2MASS and $WISE$ surveys have been used to generate a catalog of young stellar objects (YSOs) covering an area of about $6^\circ\times6^\circ$ in the Auriga region centered at $l\sim173^\circ$ and $b\sim1^\circ.5$. The nature of the identified YSOs and their spatial distribution are used to study the star formation in the region. The distribution of YSOs along with that of the ionized and molecular gas reveals two ring-like structures stretching over an area of a few degrees each in extent. We name these structures as Auriga Bubbles 1 and 2. The center of the Bubbles appears to be above the Galactic mid-plane. The majority of Class\,{\sc i} YSOs are associated with the Bubbles, whereas the relatively older population, i.e., Class\,{\sc ii} objects are rather randomly distributed. Using the minimum spanning tree analysis, we found 26 probable sub-clusters having 5 or more members. The sub-clusters are between $\sim$0.5 pc - $\sim$ 3 pc in size and are somewhat elongated. The star formation efficiency in most of the sub-cluster region varies between 5$\%$ - 20$\%$ indicating that the sub-clusters could be bound regions. The radii of these sub-clusters also support it.

Thermal Conductivity and Magnetic Phase Diagram of CuB2O4

We have measured temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermal conductivity along the c-axis, kc, and that along the [110] direction, k110, of CuB2O4 single crystals in zero field and magnetic fields along the c-axis and along the [110] direction. It has been found that the thermal conductivity is nearly isotropic and very large in zero field and that the thermal conductivity due to phonons is dominant in CuB2O4. The temperature and field dependences of kc and k110 have markedly changed at phase boundaries in the magnetic phase diagram, which has been understood to be due to the change of the mean free path of phonons caused by the change of the phonon-spin scattering rate at the phase boundaries. It has been concluded that thermal conductivity measurements are very effective for detecting magnetic phase boundaries.

Angular analysis of $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$

We present a measurement of angular observables, $P_4'$, $P_5'$, $P_6'$, $P_8'$, in the decay $B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-$, where $\ell^+\ell^-$ is either $e^+e^-$ or $μ^+μ^-$. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ containing $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar B$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider KEKB. Four angular observables, $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, $q^2$. We compare our results for $P_{4,5,6,8}'$ with Standard Model predictions including the $q^2$ region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called $P_5'$ anomaly.

Evidence for the decay $B^{0}\to ηη$

We report a search for $B^{0}\to ηη$ with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ containing $753 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to ηη) = (7.6^{+2.7 +1.4}_{-2.3 -1.6}) \times 10^{-7}$ at the level of 3.3 standard deviations above zero, which provides the first evidence for the decay $B^{0} \to ηη$.

Inclusive and exclusive measurements of $B$ decays to $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ at Belle

We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production in $B$ decays. We measure $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c1} X)$= $(3.03 \pm 0.05(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.24(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c2} X)$= $(0.70 \pm 0.06(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.10(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$. For the first time, $χ_{c2}$ production in exclusive $B$ decays in the modes $B^0 \to χ_{c2}π^- K^+$ and $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ π^- K^+$ has been observed, along with first evidence for the $B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ K_S^0$ decay mode. For $χ_{c1}$ production, we report the first observation in the $B^+ \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K^+$, $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K_S^0$ and $B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^0 π^- K^+$ decay modes. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of $χ_{c2}$ in comparison to $χ_{c1}$ in $B$ decays. In addition, we report searches for $X(3872)$ and $χ_{c1}(2P)$ in the $B^+ \to (χ_{c1} π^+ π^-) K^+$ decay mode. The reported results use $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in the $D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The observed asymmetry is $$ A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of Michel Parameters ($\barη$, $ξκ$) in the radiative leptonic decay of tau at Belle

We present the first measurement of the Michel parameters $\barη$ and $ξκ$ in the radiative leptonic decay of the $τ$ lepton using 703 f$\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The Michel parameters are measured by an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the kinematic information of $e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-\rightarrow (π^+π^0 \barν)(l^-ν\barνγ)$ $(l=e$ or $μ)$. The preliminary values of the measured Michel parameters are $\barη = -2.0 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.8$ and $ξκ= 0.6 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.2$, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\bar ν_τ}$

We report the first measurement of the $τ$ lepton polarization in the decay ${\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}$ as well as a new measurement of the ratio of the branching fractions $R(D^{*}) = \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* τ^- {\barν_τ}) / \mathcal{B}({\bar B} \rightarrow D^* \ell^- {\barν_{\ell}})$, where $\ell^-$ denotes an electron or a muon, with the decays $τ^- \rightarrow π^- ν_τ$ and $τ^- \rightarrow ρ^- ν_τ$. We use the full data sample of $772 \times 10^6$ $B{\bar B}$ pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider. Our preliminary results, $R(D^*) = 0.276 \pm 0.034{\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.029} _{-0.026}{\rm (syst.)}$ and $P_τ = -0.44 \pm 0.47 {\rm (stat.)} ^{+0.20} _{-0.17} {\rm (syst.)}$, are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model within $0.6$ standard deviation.

Measurement of the branching ratio of $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} τ^- \barν_τ$ relative to $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ decays with a semileptonic tagging method

We report a measurement of ratio ${\cal R}(D^*) = {\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} τ^- \barν_τ)/{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^- \barν_{\ell})$, where $\ell$ denotes an electron or a muon. The results are based on a data sample containing $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs recorded at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider. We select a sample of $B^0 \bar{B}^0$ pairs by reconstructing both $B$ mesons in semileptonic decays to $D^{*\mp} \ell^{\pm}$. We measure ${\cal R}(D^*)= 0.302 \pm 0.030({\rm stat)} \pm 0.011({\rm syst)}$, which is within $1.6 σ$ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation, where $σ$ is the standard deviation including systematic uncertainties.

Observation of Transverse $Λ/\barΛ$ Hyperon Polarization in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from $Σ^0/\barΣ^0$ and $Λ_c^{\pm}$ decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Structural studies of eight bright rimmed clouds in the southern hemisphere

We carried out deep and wide-field near- and mid-infrared observations for a sample of 8 bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). Supplemented with the $Spitzer$ archival data, we have identified and classified 44 to 433 young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with these BRCs. The Class I sources are generally located towards the places with higher extinction and are relatively closer to each other than the Class II sources, confirming that the young protostars are usually found in regions having denser molecular material. On the other hand the comparatively older population, Class II objects, are more randomly found throughout the regions, which can be due to their dynamical evolution. Using the minimal sampling tree analyses, we have extracted 13 stellar cores of 8 or more members, which contains 60\% of the total YSOs. The typical core is $\sim$0.6 pc in radii and somewhat elongated (aspect ratio of 1.45), of relatively low stellar density (surface density 60 pc$^{-2}$), consisting of a small (35) number of YSOs of relatively young sources (66\% Class I ), and partially embedded (median $A_K$ =1.1 mag). But the cores show a wide range in their mass distribution ($\sim$20 to 2400 M$_\odot$) with a median value of around 130 M$_\odot$. We have found the star formation efficiencies in the cores to be between 3\% and 30\% with an average of $\sim$14\%, which agree with the efficiencies needed to link the core mass function to the initial mass function. We also found a linear relation between the density of the clouds and the number of YSOs. The peaked nearest neighbor spacing distributions of the YSOs and the ratio of Jeans lengths to the YSOs separations indicates a significant degree of non-thermally driven fragmentation in these BRCs.

Study of Two-Body $e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ Production in the Energy Range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV

We report results on the studies of the $e^+e^-\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ processes. The results are based on a $121.4$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the $Υ(10860)$ peak and $16.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear $e^+e^-\toΥ(10860)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ signal, with no statistically significant signal of $e^+e^-\to Υ(11020)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$. The relative production ratio of $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$, $B_s\bar{B}_s^{*}$, and $B_s\bar{B}_s$ final states at $\sqrt{s}=10.866$ GeV is measured to be $7:$ $0.856\pm0.106(stat.)\pm0.053(syst.):$ $0.645\pm0.094(stat.)^{+0.030}_{-0.033}(syst.)$. An angular analysis of the $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$ final state produced at the $Υ(10860)$ peak is also performed.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

First Observation of Doubly Cabibbo-Suppressed Decay of a Charmed Baryon: $Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{+} π^{-}$

We report the first observation of the decay $Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{+} π^{-}$ using a 980 $\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. This is the first doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay of a charmed baryon to be observed. We measure the branching ratio of this decay with respect to its Cabibbo-favored counterpart to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{+} π^{-})/\mathcal{B}(Λ^{+}_{c} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+})=(2.35\pm0.27\pm0.21)\times10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at or near $\sqrt{s}\approx10.58$ GeV.

Measurement of the amplitude ratio of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays

We report a measurement of the amplitude ratio $r_S$ of $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$ decays with a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis using $D\to K_S^0π^+π^-$ decays. Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $ϕ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3)$ and $ϕ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on $c_i$ and $s_i$ parameters measured by CLEO.

Real Space Imaging of Spin Polarons in Zn Doped SrCu2(BO3)2

We report on the real space profile of spin polarons in the quasi two-dimensional frustrated dimer spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 doped with 0.16% of Zn. The 11B nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum exhibits 15 additional boron sites near non-magnetic Zn impurities. With the help of exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, we have deduced from the boron spectrum the distribution of local magnetizations at the Cu sites with fine spatial resolution, providing direct evidence for an extended spin polaron. The results are confronted with those of other experiments performed on doped and undoped samples of SrCu2(BO3)2.

Deep optical survey of the stellar content of Sh2-311 region

The stellar content in and around Sh2-311 region have been studied using the deep optical observations as well as near-infrared (NIR) data from 2MASS. The region contains three clusters, viz. NGC 2467, Haffner 18 and Haffner 19. We have made an attempt to distinguish the stellar content of these individual regions as well as to re-determine their fundamental parameters such as distance, reddening, age, onto the basis of a new and more extended optical and infrared photometric data set. NGC 2467 and Haffner 19 are found to be located in the Perseus arm at the distances of 5.0 $\pm$ 0.4 kpc and 5.7 $\pm$ 0.4 kpc, respectively, whereas Haffner 18 is located at the distance of 11.2 $\pm$ 1.0 kpc. The clusters NGC 2467 and Haffner 19 might have formed from the same molecular cloud, whereas the cluster Haffner 18 is located in the outer galactic arm, i.e. the Norma-Cygnus arm. We identify 8 class II young stellar objects (YSOs) using the NIR $(J - H)/(H - K)$ two colour diagram. We have estimated the age and mass of the YSOs identified in the present work and those by Snider et al. (2009) using the $V/(V - I)$ colour-magnitude diagram. The estimated ages and mass range of the majority of the YSOs are $\lesssim$1 Myr and $\sim$0.4 - 3.5 \msun, respectively, indicating that these sources could be T-Tauri stars or their siblings. Spatial distribution of the YSOs shows that some of the YSOs are distributed around the H II region Sh2-311, suggesting a triggered star formation at its periphery.

Kinematics of classical Cepheids in the Nuclear Stellar Disk

Classical Cepheids are useful tracers of the Galactic young stellar population because their distances and ages can be determined from their period-luminosity and period-age relations. In addition, the radial velocities and chemical abundance of the Cepheids can be derived from spectroscopic observations, providing further insights into the structure and evolution of the Galaxy. Here, we report the radial velocities of classical Cepheids near the Galactic Center, three of which were reported in 2011, the other reported for the first time. The velocities of these Cepheids suggest that the stars orbit within the Nuclear Stellar Disk, a group of stars and interstellar matter occupying a region of 200 pc around the Center, although the three-dimensional velocities cannot be determined until the proper motions are known. According to our simulation, these four Cepheids formed within the Nuclear Stellar Disk like younger stars and stellar clusters therein.

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ decays using a data sample of $772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We reconstruct the accompanying $B$ meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the $B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ$ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of ${\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}$. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Neutron occupancy of the 0d5/2 orbital and the N=16 shell closure in 24O

One-neutron knockout from 24O leading to the first excited state in 23O has been measured for a proton target at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of the neutron unbound state of 23O was reconstructed from the measured four momenta of the 22O fragment and emitted neutron. A sharp peak was found at Edecay=50$\pm$3 keV, corresponding to an excited state in 23O at 2.78$\pm$0.11 MeV, as observed in previous measurements. The longitudinal momentum distribution for this state was consistent with d -wave neutron knockout, providing support for a Jπ assignment of 5/2+. The associated spectroscopic factor was deduced to be C2S(0d5/2)=4.1$\pm$0.4 by comparing the measured cross section (View the MathML source) with a distorted wave impulse approximation calculation. Such a large occupancy for the neutron 0d5/2 orbital is in line with the N=16 shell closure in 24O.

Transverse polarization of $Λ$ hyperons from quasireal photoproduction on nuclei

The transverse polarization of $Λ$ hyperons was measured in inclusive quasireal photoproduction for various target nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon. The data were obtained by the HERMES experiment at HERA using the 27.6 GeV lepton beam and nuclear gas targets internal to the lepton storage ring. The polarization observed is positive for light target nuclei and is compatible with zero for krypton and xenon.

Evolution of the electronic state through the reduction annealing in electron-doped Pr_1.3-x_La_0.7_Ce_x_CuO_4+delta_ (x=0.10) single crystals: Antiferromagnetism, Kondo effect and superconductivity

The evolution of the electronic state through the reduction annealing has been investigated in electron-doped Pr_1.3-x_La_0.7_Ce_x_CuO_4+delta_ (x=0.10) single crystals with the so-called T' structure. From the ab plane and c axis electrical resistivity measurements in magnetic fields, it has been found that, through the reduction annealing, the strongly localized state of carriers accompanied by the antiferromagnetic (AF) pseudogap in the as-grown crystal changes to a metallic state bringing about the Kondo effect without AF pseudogap and to a superconducting state. These results are able to be understood in terms of a model based on the strong electron correlation. The complete removal of excess oxygen in the T'-cuprates is expected to result in the appearance of superconductivity in a wide range of the Ce concentration including the parent compound of x=0.

Multiplicities of charged pions and kaons from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering by the proton and the deuteron

Multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering are presented for each charge state of π^\pm and K^\pm mesons. The data were collected by the HERMES experiment at the HERA storage ring using 27.6 GeV electron and positron beams incident on a hydrogen or deuterium gas target. The results are presented as a function of the kinematic quantities x_B, Q^2, z, and P_h\perp. They represent a unique data set for identified hadrons that will significantly enhance our understanding of the fragmentation of quarks into final-state hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering.

Young stellar population and ongoing star formation in the HII complex Sh2-252

In this paper an extensive survey of the star forming complex Sh2-252 has been undertaken with an aim to explore its hidden young stellar population as well as to understand the structure and star formation history. This complex is composed of five embedded clusters associated with the sub-regions A, C, E, NGC 2175s and Teu 136. Using 2MASS-NIR and Spitzer-IRAC, MIPS photometry we identified 577 young stellar objects (YSOs), of which, 163 are Class I, 400 are Class II and 14 are transition disk YSOs. Spatial distribution of the candidate YSOs shows that they are mostly clustered around the sub-regions in the western half of the complex, suggesting enhanced star formation activity towards its west. Using the spectral energy distribution and optical colour-magnitude diagram based age analyses, we derived probable evolutionary status of the sub-regions of Sh2-252. Our analysis shows that the region A is the youngest (~ 0.5 Myr), the regions B, C and E are of similar evolutionary stage (~ 1-2 Myr) and the clusters NGC 2175s and Teu 136 are slightly evolved (~ 2-3 Myr). Morphology of the region in the 1.1 mm map shows a semi-circular shaped molecular shell composed of several clumps and YSOs bordering the western ionization front of Sh2-252. Our analyses suggest that next generation star formation is currently under way along this border and that possibly fragmentation of the matter collected during the expansion of the HII region as one of the major processes responsible for such stars. We observed the densest concentration of YSOs (mostly Class I, ~ 0.5 Myr) at the western outskirts of the complex, within a molecular clump associated with water and methanol masers and we suggest that it is indeed a site of cluster formation at a very early evolutionary stage, sandwiched between the two relatively evolved CHII regions A and B.

Beam-helicity and beam-charge asymmetries associated with deeply virtual Compton scattering on the unpolarised proton

Beam-helicity and beam-charge asymmetries in the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from an unpolarised hydrogen target by a 27.6 GeV lepton beam are extracted from the HERMES data set of 2006-2007 using a missing-mass event selection technique. The asymmetry amplitudes extracted from this data set are more precise than those extracted from the earlier data set of 1996-2005 previously analysed in the same manner by HERMES. The results from the two data sets are compatible with each other. Results from these combined data sets are extracted and constitute the most precise asymmetry amplitude measurements made in the HERMES kinematic region using a missing-mass event selection technique.

Hindered proton collectivity in 28S: Possible magic number at Z=16

The reduced transition probability B(E2;0 ->2+) for 28S was obtained experimentally using Coulomb excitation at 53 MeV/nucleon. The resultant B(E2) value 181(31) e2fm4 is smaller than the expectation based on empirical B(E2) systematics. The double ratio |M_n/M_p|/(N/Z) of the 0+ ->2+ transition in 28S was determined to be 1.9(2) by evaluating the M_n value from the known B(E2) value of the mirror nucleus 28Mg, showing the hindrance of proton collectivity relative to that of neutrons. These results indicate the emergence of the magic number Z=16 in the |T_z|=2 nucleus 28S.

Measurement of the CP-violation Parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ with a New Tagging Method at the $Υ(5S)$ Resonance

We report a measurement of the CP-violation parameter sin2$ϕ_1$ at the $Υ(5S)$ resonance using a new tagging method, called "$B$-$π$ tagging." In $Υ(5S)$ decays containing a neutral $B$ meson, a charged $B$, and a charged pion, the neutral $B$ is reconstructed in the $J/ψK_S^0$ CP-eigenstate decay channel. The initial flavor of the neutral $B$ meson at the moment of the $Υ(5S)$ decay is opposite to that of the charged $B$ and may thus be inferred from the charge of the pion without reconstructing the charged $B$. From the asymmetry between $B$-$π^+$ and $B$-$π^-$ tagged $J/ψK_S^0$ yields, we determine sin2$ϕ_1$ = 0.57 $\pm$ 0.58(stat) $\pm$ 0.06(syst). The results are based on 121 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Observation of new microsecond isomers among fission products of 345 MeV/nucleon 238U

A search for isomeric gamma-decays among fission fragments from 345 MeV/nucleon 238U has been performed at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory. Fission fragments were selected and identified using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS and were implanted in an aluminum stopper. Delayed gamma-rays were detected using three clover-type high-purity germanium detectors located at the focal plane within a time window of 20 microseconds following the implantation. We identified a total of 54 microsecond isomers with half-lives of ~0.1 - 10 microseconds, including discovery of 18 new isomers in very neutron-rich nuclei: 59Tim, 90Asm, 92Sem, 93Sem, 94Brm, 95Brm, 96Brm, 97Rbm, 108Nbm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Pdm, 124Agm and 126Agm, and obtained a wealth of spectroscopic information such as half-lives, gamma-ray energies, gamma-ray relative intensities and gamma-gamma coincidences over a wide range of neutron-rich exotic nuclei. Proposed level schemes are presented for 59Tim, 82Gam, 92Brm, 94Brm, 95Brm, 97Rbm, 98Rbm, 108Nbm, 108Zrm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Agm and 125Agm, based on the obtained spectroscopic information and the systematics in neighboring nuclei. Nature of the nuclear isomerism is discussed in relation to evolution of nuclear structure.

Optical and Near-infrared survey of the stellar contents associated with the star-forming Complex Sh2-252

We present the analyses of the stellar contents associated with the HII region Sh2-252 using UBVRI photometry, slit and slitless spectroscopy along with the NIR data from 2MASS for an area ~1 degree x 1 degree. We studied the sub-regions of Sh2-252 which includes four compact-HII (CHII) regions, namely A, B, C and E and two clusters NGC 2175s and Teutsch 136 (Teu 136). Of the fifteen spectroscopically observed bright stars, eight have been identified as massive members of spectral class earlier than B3. From the spectro-photometric analyses, we derived the average distance of the region as 2.4+/-0.2 kpc and the reddening of the massive members is found to vary between 0.35 to 2.1 mag. We found that NGC 2175s and Teu 136, located towards the eastern edge of the complex are the sub-clusters of Sh2-252. The stellar surface density distribution in K-band shows clustering associated with the regions A, C, E, NGC 2175s and Teu 136. We have also identified the candidate ionizing sources of the CHII regions. 61 H_alpha emission sources are identified using slitless spectroscopy. The distribution of the H_alpha emission sources and candidate YSOs with IR excess on the V/(V-I) CMD shows that a majority of them have approximate ages between 0.1 - 5 Myr and masses in the range of 0.3 - 2.5 M_sun. The CMDs of the candidate YSOs in the individual regions also show an age spread of 0.1 - 5 Myr for each of them. We calculated the KLFs for the sub-regions A, C, E, NGC 2175s and Teu 136. Within errors, the KLFs for all the sub-regions are found to be similar and comparable to that of young clusters of age < 5 Myr. We also estimated the mass functions (MFs) of the PMS sample of the individual regions in the mass range of 0.3 - 2.5 M_sun. In general, the slopes of the MFs of all the sub-regions are found comparable to the Salpeter value.

The N = 16 spherical shell closure in 24O

The unbound excited states of the neutron drip-line isotope 24O have been investigated via the 24O(p,p')23O+n reaction in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of 62 MeV/nucleon. The decay energy spectrum of 24O* was reconstructed from the momenta of 23O and the neutron. The spin-parity of the first excited state, observed at Ex = 4.65 +/- 0.14 MeV, was determined to be Jpi = 2+ from the angular distribution of the cross section. Higher lying states were also observed. The quadrupole transition parameter beta2 of the 2+ state was deduced, for the first time, to be 0.15 +/- 0.04. The relatively high excitation energy and small beta2 value are indicative of the N = 16 shell closure in 24O.

Two-band superconductivity featuring different anisotropies in the ternary iron silicide Lu$_{2}$Fe$_{3}$Si$_{5}$

We report detailed studies of the upper critical field and low-temperature specific heat in the two-gap superconductor Lu$_{2}$Fe$_{3}$Si$_{5}$. The anisotropy of the upper critical field suggests that the active band is quasi-one-dimensional. Low-temperature specific heat in magnetic fields reveals that the virtual $H_{c2}$ in the passive band is almost isotropic. These results strongly indicate that the two bands have two different anisotropies, similar to the typical two-gap superconductor MgB$_{2}$, and their interplay may be essential to the two-gap superconductivity in Lu$_{2}$Fe$_{3}$Si$_{5}$.

Well-developed deformation in 42Si

Excited states in 38,40,42Si nuclei have been studied via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy with multi-nucleon removal reactions. Intense radioactive beams of 40S and 44S provided at the new facility of the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory enabled gamma-gamma coincidence measurements. A prominent gamma line observed with an energy of 742(8) keV in 42Si confirms the 2+ state reported in an earlier study. Among the gamma lines observed in coincidence with the 2+ -> 0+ transition, the most probable candidate for the transition from the yrast 4+ state was identified, leading to a 4+_1 energy of 2173(14) keV. The energy ratio of 2.93(5) between the 2+_1 and 4+_1 states indicates well-developed deformation in 42Si at N=28 and Z=14. Also for 38,40Si energy ratios with values of 2.09(5) and 2.56(5) were obtained. Together with the ratio for 42Si, the results show a rapid deformation development of Si isotopes from N=24 to N=28.

Finite-temperature phase diagram of two-component bosons in a cubic optical lattice: Three-dimensional t-J model of hard-core bosons

We study the three-dimensional bosonic t-J model, i.e., the t-J model of "bosonic electrons", at finite temperatures. This model describes the $s={1 \over 2}$ Heisenberg spin model with the anisotropic exchange coupling $J_{\bot}=-αJ_z$ and doped {\it bosonic} holes, which is an effective system of the Bose-Hubbard model with strong repulsions. The bosonic "electron" operator $B_{rσ}$ at the site $r$ with a two-component (pseudo-)spin $σ(=1,2)$ is treated as a hard-core boson operator, and represented by a composite of two slave particles; a "spinon" described by a Schwinger boson (CP$^1$ boson) $z_{rσ}$ and a "holon" described by a hard-core-boson field $ϕ_r$ as $B_{rσ}=ϕ^†_r z_{rσ}$. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we study its finite-temperature phase structure including the $α$ dependence, the possible phenomena like appearance of checkerboard long-range order, super-counterflow, superfluid, and phase separation, etc. The obtained results may be taken as predictions about experiments of two-component cold bosonic atoms in the cubic optical lattice.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries associated with deeply virtual Compton scattering on a longitudinally polarized deuterium target

Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of a real photon from a longitudinally polarized deuterium target are measured with respect to target polarization alone and with respect to target polarization combined with beam helicity and/or beam charge. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the real photons in the azimuthal angle $ϕ$ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering process and its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. The results for the beam-charge and beam-helicity asymmetries from a tensor polarized deuterium target with vanishing vector polarization are shown to be compatible with those from an unpolarized deuterium target, which is expected for incoherent scattering dominant at larger momentum transfer. Furthermore, the results for the single target-spin asymmetry and for the double-spin asymmetry are found to be compatible with the corresponding asymmetries previously measured on a hydrogen target. For coherent scattering on the deuteron at small momentum transfer to the target, these findings imply that the tensor contribution to the cross section is small. Furthermore, the tensor asymmetry is found to be compatible with zero.

Multidimensional Study of Hadronization in Nuclei

Hadron multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering were measured on neon, krypton and xenon targets relative to deuterium at an electron(positron)-beam energy of 27.6 GeV at HERMES. These ratios were determined as a function of the virtual-photon energy nu, its virtuality Q2, the fractional hadron energy z and the transverse hadron momentum with respect to the virtual-photon direction pt . Dependences were analysed separately for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons as well as protons and antiprotons in a two-dimensional representation. Compared to the one-dimensional dependences, some new features were observed. In particular, when z > 0.4 positive kaons do not show the strong monotonic rise of the multiplicity ratio with nu as exhibited by pions and negative kaons. Protons were found to behave very differently from the other hadrons.

One- and two-neutron removal reactions from the most neutron-rich carbon isotopes

The structure of $^{19,20,22}$C has been investigated using high-energy (about 240 MeV/nucleon) one- and two-neutron removal reactions on a carbon target. Measurements were made of the inclusive cross sections and momentum distributions for the charged residues. Narrow momentum distributions were observed for one-neutron removal from $^{19}$C and $^{20}$C and two-neutron removal from $^{22}$C. Two-neutron removal from $^{20}$C resulted in a relatively broad momentum distribution. The results are compared with eikonal-model calculations combined with shell-model structure information. The neutron-removal cross sections and associated momentum distributions are calculated for transitions to both the particle-bound and particle-unbound final states. The calculations take into account the population of the mass $A-1$ reaction residues, $^{A-1}$C, and, following one-neutron emission after one-neutron removal, the mass $A-2$ two-neutron removal residues, $^{A-2}$C. The smaller contributions of direct two-neutron removal, that populate the $^{A-2}$C residues in a single step, are also computed. The data and calculations are shown to be in good overall agreement and consistent with the predicted shell-model ground state configurations and the one-neutron overlaps with low-lying states in $^{18-21}$C. These suggest significant $ν{s}_{1/2}^2$ valence neutron configurations in both $^{20}$C and $^{22}$C. The results for $^{22}$C strongly support the picture of $^{22}$C as a two-neutron halo nucleus with a dominant $ν{s}_{1/2}^2$ ground state configuration.

Structural evolution in the neutron-rich nuclei 106Zr and 108Zr

The low-lying states in 106Zr and 108Zr have been investigated by means of β-γ and isomer spectroscopy at the RI beam factory, respectively. A new isomer with a half-life of 620\pm150 ns has been identified in 108Zr. For the sequence of even-even Zr isotopes, the excitation energies of the first 2+ states reach a minimum at N = 64 and gradually increase as the neutron number increases up to N = 68, suggesting a deformed sub-shell closure at N = 64. The deformed ground state of 108Zr indicates that a spherical sub-shell gap predicted at N = 70 is not large enough to change the ground state of 108Zr to the spherical shape. The possibility of a tetrahedral shape isomer in 108Zr is also discussed.

Suppression of superconductivity by non-magnetic disorder in organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$

The suppression of superconductivity by nonmagnetic disorder is investigated systematically in the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$. We introduce a nonmagnetic disorder arising from molecule substitution in part with deuterated BEDT-TTF or BMDT-TTF for BEDT-TTF molecules and molecular defects introduced by X-ray irradiation. A quantitative evaluation of the scattering time $τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is carried out by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurement. A large reduction in $T_{\rm c}$ with a linear dependence on $1/τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is found in the small-disorder region below $1/τ_{\rm dHvA} \simeq$ 1 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ s$^{-1}$ in both the BMDT-TTF molecule-substituted and X-ray-irradiated samples. The observed linear relation between $T_{\rm c}$ and $1/τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is in agreement with the Abrikosov-Gorkov (AG) formula, at least in the small-disorder region. This observation is reasonably consistent with the unconventional superconductivity proposed thus far for the present organic superconductor. A deviation from the AG formula, however, is observed in the large-disorder region above $1/τ_{\rm dHvA} \simeq$ 1 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ s$^{-1}$, which reproduces the previous transport study (J. G. Analytis {\it et al.}: Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96} (2006) 177002). We present some interpretations of this deviation from the viewpoints of superconductivity and the inherent difficulties in the evaluation of scattering time.

Thermal Conductivity of the Quasi One-Dimensional Spin System Sr_2_V_3_O_9_

We have measured the thermal conductivity along the [101] direction, kappa_[101]_, along the [10-1] direction, kappa_[10-1]_, and along the b-axis, kappa_b_, of the quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 spin system Sr_2_V_3_O_9_ in magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to find the thermal conductivity due to spinons and to clarify whether the spin-chains run along the [101] or [10-1] direction. It has been found that both kappa_[101]_, kappa_[10-1]_ and kappa_b_ show one peak around 10 K in zero field and that the magnitude of kappa_[10-1]_ is larger than those of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_. By the application of magnetic field along the heat current, the peak of kappa_[10-1]_ is markedly suppressed, while the peaks of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_ little change. These results indicate that there is a large contribution of spinons to kappa_[10-1]_ and suggest that the spin-chains run along the [10-1] direction.

Three classical Cepheid variable stars in the nuclear bulge of the Milky Way

The nuclear bulge is a region with a radius of about 200 parsecs around the centre of the Milky Way. It contains stars with ages ranging from a few million years to over a billion years, yet its star-formation history and the triggering process for star formation remain to be resolved. Recently, episodic star formation, powered by changes in the gas content, has been suggested. Classical Cepheid variable stars have pulsation periods that decrease with increasing age, so it is possible to probe the star-formation history on the basis of the distribution of their periods. Here we report the presence of three classical Cepheids in the nuclear bulge with pulsation periods of approximately 20 days, within 40 parsecs (projected distance) of the central black hole. No Cepheids with longer or shorter periods were found. We infer that there was a period about 25 million years ago, and possibly lasting until recently, in which star formation increased relative to the period of 30-70 million years ago.

"Dark" GRB 080325 in a Dusty Massive Galaxy at z ~ 2

We present optical and near infrared observations of GRB 080325 classified as a "Dark GRB". Near-infrared observations with Subaru/MOIRCS provided a clear detection of afterglow in Ks band, although no optical counterpart was reported. The flux ratio of rest-wavelength optical to X-ray bands of the afterglow indicates that the dust extinction along the line of sight to the afterglow is Av = 2.7 - 10 mag. This large extinction is probably the major reason for optical faintness of GRB 080325. The J - Ks color of the host galaxy, (J - Ks = 1.3 in AB magnitude), is significantly redder than those for typical GRB hosts previously identified. In addition to J and Ks bands, optical images in B, Rc, i', and z' bands with Subaru/Suprime-Cam were obtained at about one year after the burst, and a photometric redshift of the host is estimated to be z_{photo} = 1.9. The host luminosity is comparable to L^{*} at z \sim 2 in contrast to the sub-L^{*} property of typical GRB hosts at lower redshifts. The best-fit stellar population synthesis model for the host shows that a large dust extinction (Av = 0.8 mag) attributes to the red nature of the host and that the host galaxy is massive (M_{*} = 7.0 \times 10^{10} Msun) which is one of the most massive GRB hosts previously identified. By assuming that the mass-metallicity relation for star-forming galaxies at z \sim 2 is applicable for the GRB host, this large stellar mass suggests the high metallicity environment around GRB 080325, consistent with inferred large extinction.

Effect of pressure on the magnetic, transport, and thermal-transport properties of the electron-doped manganite CaMn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$O$_{3}$

We have demonstrated the effect of hydrostatic pressure on magnetic and transport properties, and thermal transport properties in electron-doped manganites CaMn$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$O$_{3}$. The substitution of Sb$^{5+}$ ion for Mn $^{4+}$site of the parent matrix causes one-electron doping with the chemical formula CaMn$^{4+}_{1-2x}$Mn$^{3+}_{x}$Sb$^{5+}_{x}$O$_{3}$ accompanied by a monotonous increase in unit cell volume as a function of $x$. Upon increasing the doping level of Sb, the magnitudes of both electrical resistivity and negative Seebeck coefficient are suppressed at high temperatures, indicating the electron doping. Anomalous diamagnetic behaviors at $x=0.05$ and 0.08 are clearly observed in field cooled dc magnetization. The effect of hydrostatic pressure on dc magnetization is in contrast to the chemical pressure effect due to Sb doping. The dynamical effect of ac magnetic susceptibility measurement points to the formation of the magnetically frustrated clusters such as FM clusters embedded in canted AFM matrix.

Effects of transversity in deep-inelastic scattering by polarized protons

Single-spin asymmetries for pions and charged kaons are measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of positrons and electrons off a transversely nuclear-polarized hydrogen target. The dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal angles of the target polarization (phi_S)and the produced hadron (phi) is found to have a substantial sin(phi+phi_S) modulation for the production of pi+, pi- and K+. This Fourier component can be interpreted in terms of non-zero transversity distribution functions and non-zero favored and disfavored Collins fragmentation functions with opposite sign. For pi0 and K- production the amplitude of this Fourier component is consistent with zero.

Exclusive Leptoproduction of Real Photons on a Longitudinally Polarised Hydrogen Target

Polarisation asymmetries are measured for the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from a longitudinally polarised hydrogen target. These asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. From the data are extracted two asymmetries in the azimuthal distribution of produced real photons about the direction of the exchanged virtual photon: A_UL with respect to the target polarisation and A_LL with respect to the product of the beam and target polarisations. Results for both asymmetries are compared to the predictions from a generalised parton distribution model. The sin(phi) and cos(0*phi) amplitudes observed respectively for the A_UL and A_LL asymmetries are compatible with the sizeable predictions from the model. Unexpectedly, a sin(2*phi) modulation in the A_UL asymmetry with a magnitude similar to that of the sin(phi) modulation is observed.

Exploring the "Island of Inversion" by in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich sodium isotopes 31,32,33Na

The structure of the neutron rich sodium isotopes 31,32,33Na was investigated by means of in-beam gammaray spectroscopy following one-neutron knockout and inelastic scattering of radioactive beams provided by the RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. The secondary beams were selected and separated by the fragment separator BigRIPS and incident at ~240 meV/u on a natural carbon (secondary) target, which was surrounded by the DALI2 array to detect coincident de-excitation gammarays. Scattered particles were identified by the spectrometer ZeroDegree. In 31Na, a new decay gammaray was observed in coincidence with the known (5/2+)-> 3/2(+) transition, while for 32,33Na excited states are reported for the first time. From a comparison to state-of-the-art shell model calculations it is concluded that the newly observed excited state in 31Na belongs to a rotational band formed by a 2p2h intruder configuration within the "Island of Inversion".

Magnetic field effect on Fe-induced short-range magnetic correlation and electrical conductivity in Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$

We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic fields of Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$, in which hole carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic correlation with incommensurability $δ=0.21$, whereas a Fe-free compound shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature in the form of $ln(1/T)$ and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive effect) at temperatures below the onset of short-range magnetic correlation. Application of magnetic fields also suppresses the Fe induced incommensurate magnetic correlation. We compare and contrast these observations with two different models: 1) stripe order, and 2) dilute magnetic moments in a metallic alloy, with associated Kondo behavior. The latter picture appears to be more relevant to the present results.

$^{63/65}$Cu- and $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR Studies of Triplet Localization in the Quantum Spin System NH$_4$CuCl$_3$

$^{63/65}$Cu- and $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR experiments were performed to investigate triplet localization in the $S=1/2$ dimer compound NH$_4$CuCl$_3$, which shows magnetization plateaus at one-quarter and three-quarters of the saturation magnetization. In $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments, signal from only the singlet Cu site was observed, because that from the triplet Cu site was invisible due to the strong spin fluctuation of onsite 3$d$-spins. We found that the temperature dependence of the shift of $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR spectra at the singlet Cu site deviated from that of macroscopic magnetization below T=6 K. This deviation is interpreted as the triplet localization in this system. From the $^{35/37}$Cl-NMR experiments at the 1/4-plateau phase, we found the two different temperature dependences of Cl-shift, namely the temperature dependence of one deviates below T=6 K from that of the macroscopic magnetization as observed in the $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments, whereas the other corresponds well with that of the macroscopic magnetization in the entire experimental temperature region. We interpreted these dependences as reflecting the transferred hyperfine field at the Cl site located at a singlet site and at a triplet site, respectively. This result also indicates that the triplets are localized at low temperatures. $^{63/65}$Cu-NMR experiments performed at high magnetic fields between the one-quarter and three-quarters magnetization plateaus have revealed that the two differently oriented dimers in the unit cell are equally occupied by triplets, the fact of which limits the theoretical model on the periodic structure of the localized triplets.

Evolution of a pairing-induced pseudogap from the superconducting gap of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6

We have performed an ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of slightly-overdoped (Bi,Pb)2Sr2CuO6 to elucidate the origin of pseudogap. By using a newly developed xenon-plasma light source, we determined the comprehensive momentum and temperature dependences of the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. We found that the antinodal pseudogap persists far above the superconducting transition temperature and is smoothly connected to the nodal gap. The characteristic temperature of the pseudogap scales well with the superconducting-gap size irrespective of the momentum location. The present experimental results point to the pairing origin of the pseudogap.

Self-shielding effect of a single phase liquid xenon detector for direct dark matter search

Liquid xenon is a suitable material for a dark matter search. For future large scale experiments, single phase detectors are attractive due to their simple configuration and scalability. However, in order to reduce backgrounds, they need to fully rely on liquid xenon's self-shielding property. A prototype detector was developed at Kamioka Observatory to establish vertex and energy reconstruction methods and to demonstrate the self-shielding power against gamma rays from outside of the detector. Sufficient self-shielding power for future experiments was obtained.

Bulk and surface low-energy excitations in YBa2Cu3O7-d studied by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y123; delta = 0.06; Tc = 92 K). By accurately determining the Fermi surface and energy band dispersion, we solve long-standing controversial issues as to the anomalous electronic states of Y-based high-Tc cuprates. We unambiguously identified surface-bilayer-derived bonding and antibonding bands, together with their bulk counterparts. The surface bands are highly overdoped (hole concentration x = 0.29), showing no evidence for the gap opening or the dispersion anomaly in the antinodal region, while the bulk bands show a clear dx2-y2-wave superconducting gap and the Bogoliubov quasiparticle-like behavior with a characteristic energy scale of 50-60 meV indicative of a strong electron-boson coupling in the superconducting state. All these results suggest that the metallic and superconducting states coexist at the adjacent bilayer of Y123 surface.

Diffraction-limited 3 um Spectroscopy of IRAS 04296+3429 and IRAS 05341+0852: Spatial Extent of Hydrocarbon Dust Emission and Dust Evolutionary Sequence

We present 3 um spectroscopy of the carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae IRAS 04296+3429 and IRAS 05341+0852 conducted with the adaptive optics system at the Subaru Telescope. We utilize the nearly diffraction-limited spectroscopy to probe the spatial extent of the hydrocarbon dust emitting zone. We find a hydrocarbon emission core extending up to 100--160 mas from the center of IRAS 04296+3429, corresponding to a physical diameter of 400--640 AU, assuming a distance of 4 kpc. On the other hand, we find that IRAS 05341+0852 is not spatially resolved with this instrumentation. The physical extent of these proto-planetary nebulae, along with the reanalyzed data of IRAS 22272+5435 published previously, suggests a correlation between the physical extent of the hydrocarbon dust emission and the spectral evolution of the aliphatic to aromatic features in these post-AGB stars. These measurements represent the first direct test of the proposed chemical synthesis route of carbonaceous dust in the circumstellar environment of evolved stars.

A High-Resolution Very Large Array Observation of a Protostar in OMC-3: Shock-induced X-ray Emission by a Protostellar Jet

Using the Very Large Array (VLA) in the A-configuration, we have obtained a high-resolution 3.6 cm map of a hard X-ray source detected by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in a protostellar clump in Orion molecular cloud 3. Two radio continuum sources were detected in the vicinity of the X-ray source, both of which have NIR counterparts. We conclude that these VLA sources are free-free emission produced by shocks in protostellar jets from the NIR class I protostars. Using the centimeter data, we determined the power and orientation of the protostellar jets. The center position of the X-ray emission was found to be ~1--2" offset from the exciting sources of the jets, and the displacement is in the direction of the jets and molecular outflows. We discuss the nature of the X-ray emission as the shock-excited plasma at the shock front where the jet propagates through interstellar medium at a speed of ~1000 km/s.

The Subaru Deep Field: The Optical Imaging Data

The Subaru Deep Field (SDF) project is a program of Subaru Observatory to carry out a deep galaxy survey over a blank field as large as 34'x27'. The program consists of very deep multi-band optical imaging, near infrared imaging for smaller portions of the field and follow-up optical spectroscopy. Major scientific goals of the project are to construct large samples of Lyman-break galaxies at z~4-5 and Lyman alpha emitters at z~5.7 and 6.6, and to make detailed studies these very high-redshift galaxy populations. In this paper, we describe the optical imaging observations and data reduction, presenting mosaicked images and object catalogs in seven bandpasses. The optical imaging was made through five broad-band filters, B, V, R, i', z', and two narrow-band filters, NB816 (lambda_c=8150A) and NB921 (lambda_c=9196A) with almost 10 hours long integrations for each band. The limiting magnitudes measured at 3-sigma on a 2" aperture are B=28.45, V=27.74, R=27.80, i'=27.43, z'=26.62, NB816=26.63, and NB921=26.54 in the AB system. The object catalog constructed for each of the seven bands contains more than 10^5 objects. The galaxy number counts corrected for detection incompleteness and star count contribution are found to be consistent with previous results in the literature. The mosaicked images and catalogs of all the bands have been made open to the public on Oct. 1, 2004 on the SDF project website at http://soaps.naoj.org/sdf/.

Absorption Line Survey of H3+ toward the Galactic Center Sources I. GCS 3-2 and GC IRS3

We present high-resolution (R = 20000) spectroscopy of H3+ absorption toward the luminous Galactic center sources GCS 3-2 and GC IRS 3. With the efficient wavelength coverage afforded by Subaru IRCS, six absorption lines of H3+ have been detected in each source from 3.5 to 4.0 um, three of which are new. In particular the 3.543 um absorption line of the R(3, 3)^l transition arising from the metastable (J, K) = (3, 3) state has been tentatively detected for the first time in the interstellar medium, where previous observations of H3+ had been limited to absorption lines from the lowest levels: (J, K) = (1, 0) of ortho-H3+ and (1, 1) of para-H3+. The H3+ absorption toward the Galactic center takes place in dense and diffuse clouds along the line of sight as well as the molecular complex close to the Galactic nucleus. At least four kinematic components are found in the H3+ absorption lines. We suggest identifications of the velocity components with those of HI, CO, and H2CO previously reported from radio and infrared observations. H3+ components with velocities that match those of weak and sharp CO and H2CO lines are attributed to diffuse clouds. Our observation has revealed a striking difference between the absorption profiles of H3+ and CO, demonstrating that the spectroscopy of H3+ provides information complementary to that obtained from CO spectroscopy. The tentative detection of the R(3, 3)^l line and the non-detection of spectral lines from other J > 1 levels provide observational evidence for the metastability of the (3, 3) level, which is theoretically expected. This suggests that other metastable J = K levels with higher J may also be populated.

Subaru Deep Survey I. Near-Infrared Observations

Deep near-infrared images of a blank 2'x2' section of sky near the Galactic north pole taken by Subaru Telescope are presented. The total integration times of the J and K' bands are 12.1 hours and 9.7 hours, resulting in 5-sigma limiting magnitudes of 25.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively. The numbers of sources within these limiting magnitudes found with an automated detection procedure are 385 in the J band and 350 in K'. Based on photometric measurements of these sources, we present number count vs. magnitude relations, color vs. magnitude diagrams, size vs. color relationships, etc. The slope of the galaxy number count plotted against the AB magnitude scale is about 0.23 in the 22 to 26 AB magnitude range of both bands. The spatial number density of galaxies as well as the slopes in the faint-end region given by the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) survey is consistent with those given by HST-NICMOS surveys as expressed on the AB magnitude diagram. Several sources having very large J-K' color are found including a few K' objects without detection at J. In addition, a number of faint Galactic stars are also detected, most of which are assigned to M-subdwarfs, together with a few brown dwarf candidates.
