Measuring $\mathbf{CP}$ violating phase in beauty baryon decays

One of the outstanding problems in physics is to explain the baryon-anti-baryon asymmetry observed in nature. According to the well-known Sakharov criterion for explaining the observed asymmetry, it is essential that $CP$ violation exist. Even though $CP$ violation has been observed in meson decays and is an integral part of the standard model (SM), measurements in meson decays indicate that $CP$ violation in the SM is insufficient to explain the observed baryon-anti-baryon asymmetry. SM predicts the existence of yet to be observed $CP$ violation in baryon decays. A critical test of the SM requires that $CP$ violation be measured in baryon decays as well, in order to verify that it agrees with the measurement using meson decays. In this letter we propose a new method to measure $CP$ violating phase in $b$-baryons, using interference arising implicitly due to Bose symmetry considerations of the decaying amplitudes.

Non-leptonic beauty baryon decays and $CP$-asymmetries based on $SU(3)$-Flavor analysis

We consider hadronic weak decays of beauty-baryons into charmless baryons and pseudoscalar mesons in a general framework based on $SU(3)$ decomposition of the decay amplitudes. The advantage of the approach lies in the ability to perform an $SU(3)$ analysis of these decays without any particular set of dynamical assumptions while accounting for the effects of an arbitrarily broken $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry. Dictated by the symmetries of the effective Hamiltonian that allow us to relate or neglect reduced $SU(3)$ amplitudes, we derive several sum rule relations between amplitudes and relations between $CP$ asymmetries in these decays and identify those that hold even if $SU(3)$ is broken.

A model independent method for quantitative estimation of $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry breaking using Dalitz plot

The light hadron states are satisfactorily described in the quark model using $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry. If the $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry relating the light hadrons were exact, one would have an exchange symmetry between these hadrons arising out of the exchange of the up, down and strange quarks. This aspect of $SU(3)$ symmetry is used extensively to relate many decay modes of heavy quarks. However, the nature of the effects of $SU(3)$ breaking in such decays is not well understood and hence, a reliable estimate of $SU(3)$ breaking effects is missing. In this work we propose a new method to quantitatively estimate the extent of flavor symmetry breaking and better understand the nature of such breaking using Dalitz plot. We study the three non-commuting $SU(2)$ symmetries (subsumed in $SU(3)$ flavor symmetry): isospin (or $T$-spin), $U$-spin and $V$-spin, using the Dalitz plots of some three-body meson decays. We look at the Dalitz plot distributions of decays in which pairs of the final three particles are related by two distinct $SU(2)$ symmetries. We show that such decay modes have characteristic distributions that enable the measurement of violation of each of the three $SU(2)$ symmetries via Dalitz plot asymmetries in a single decay mode. Experimental estimates of these easily measurable asymmetries would help in better understanding the weak decays of heavy mesons into both two and three light mesons.

On testing violations of Bose and $CPT$ symmetries via Dalitz plots and Dalitz `prism'

Bose symmetry and $CPT$ symmetry are two very fundamental symmetries of Nature. However, the validity of these symmetries in diverse phenomena must be verified by experiments. We propose new techniques to probe these two fundamental symmetries in the realm of mesons by using the Dalitz plot of a few three-body meson decays. Since these symmetries are very fundamental in nature, their violations, if any, are expected to be extremely small. Hence observing their violations requires study of a huge data sample. In this context we introduce a new three-dimensional plot which we refer to as the Dalitz 'prism'. This provides an innovative means for acquiring the huge statistics required for such studies. Using the Dalitz plots and the Dalitz prisms we chart out the way to probe the violations of Bose and $CPT$ symmetries in a significant manner. Since mesons are unstable and composite particles, testing the validity of Bose symmetry and the $CPT$ symmetry in these cases are of paramount importance for fundamental physics.

A new technique to observe direct CP Violation in D mesons using Bose Symmetry and Dalitz Plot

We present a new and sensitive method to observe direct CP violation in $D$ mesons using Bose symmetry and Dalitz plot. We apply the method to processes such as $B \to D^0\bar{D}^0 P$, where $P$ is either a $K$ or a $π$. By choosing to reconstruct $D$ mesons only through their decays into CP eigenstates, we show that any asymmetry in the Dalitz plot can arise only through direct CP violation. We further show how CP violation parameters can be determined. Since the approach involves only Bose symmetry, the method is applicable to any multi-body process that involves $D^0\bar{D}^0$ in the final state. We briefly discuss how $B\to D^* \bar{D}^* P$ can also be used in a similar way.

An analysis of B meson decays to two light pseudoscalar nonets with deltaS=1 in QCD factorization approach

We have performed a numerical analysis of branching ratios and direct CP-asymmetries of B meson decays to two light pseudoscalar nonets with deltaS=1 using QCD improved factorization. The parameters related to B meson including its semileptonic form factors, strange quark mass and the CKM phase angle have been varied over a limited range and phenomenological parameters used to parameterize divergences in hard spectator scattering and weak annihilation have been varied over a wide range simultaneously with an aim to achieve a fit of branching ratios and some direct CP-asymmetries. A good fit for the majority of the parameters has been achieved indicating that the standard model is quite satisfactory in accounting for these processes.

Hints of R-parity violation in B decays into $τν$

In this article we show that the recently observed enhanced semi-leptonic and leptonic decay rates of the B meson into τνmodes can be explained within the frame work of R-parity violating (RPV) MSSM. In particular, RPV contributions involving the exchange of right-handed down-type squarks give a universal contribution to the B+ --> τν, B --> D τνand the B --> D* τνdecays. We find that the masses and couplings that explain the enhanced B decay rates are phenomelogically viable and the squarks can possibly be observed at the LHC.

Anomalous Triple Gauge Boson Couplings in $e^{-}e^{+} \to γγ$ for Non Commutative Standard Model

We investigate $e^{+}e^{-}\to γγ$ process within the Seiberg-Witten expanded noncommutative standard model(NCSM) scenario in the presence of anomalous triple gauge boson couplings. This study is done with and without initial beam polarization and we restrict ourselves to leading order effects of non commutativity i.e. $O(Θ)$. The non commutative(NC) corrections are sensitive to the electric component($\vecΘ_E$) of NC parameter. We include the effects of earth rotation in our analysis. This study is done by investigating the effects of non commutativity on different time averaged cross section observables. We have also defined forward backward asymmetries which will be exclusively sensitive to anomalous couplings. We have looked into the sensitivity of these couplings at future experiments at the International Linear Collider(ILC). This analysis is done under realistic ILC conditions with the Center of mass energy(c.m.) $\sqrt{s}=800$GeV and integrated luminosity L=500fb${}^{-1}$. The scale of non commutativity is assumed to be $Λ= 1$TeV. The limits on anomalous couplings of the order $10^{-1}$ from forward backward asymmetries while much stringent limits of the order $10^{-2}$ from total cross section are obtained if no signal beyond SM is seen.

$μ- e$ Conversion With Four Generations

We study $μ- e$ conversion with sequential four generations. A large mass for the fourth generation neutrino can enhance the conversion rate by orders of magnitude. We compare constraints obtained from $μ- e$ conversion using experimental bounds on various nuclei with those from $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to e\bar e e$. We find that the current bound from $μ- e$ conversion with Au puts the most stringent constraint in this model. The relevant flavor changing parameter $λ_{μe} = V^*_{μ4}V_{e4}^{}$ is constrained to be less than $1.6\times 10^{-5}$ for the fourth generation neutrino mass larger than 100 GeV. Implications for future $μ-e$ conversion, $μ\to eγ$ and $μ\to e\bar e e$ experiments are discussed.

Determination of Weak Amplitudes using Bose Symmetry and Dalitz Plots

We present a new method using Dalitz plot and Bose symmetry of pions that allows the complete determination of the magnitudes and phases of weak decay amplitudes. We apply the method to process like B->K^* pi, with the subsequent decay of K^* -> K pi. Our approach enables the additional measurement of an isospin amplitude without any theoretical assumption. This advance will help in measuring weak phase and probing for new physics beyond standard model with fewer assumptions.

TeV Scale Implications of Non Commutative Space time in Laboratory Frame with Polarized Beams

We analyze $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow γγ$, $e^{-}γ\rightarrow e^{-}γ$ and $γγ\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-} $ processes within the Seiberg-Witten expanded noncommutative scenario using polarized beams. With unpolarized beams the leading order effects of non commutativity starts from second order in non commutative(NC) parameter i.e. $O(Θ^2)$, while with polarized beams these corrections appear at first order ($O(Θ)$) in cross section. The corrections in Compton case can probe the magnetic component($\vecΘ_B$) while in Pair production and Pair annihilation probe the electric component($\vecΘ_E$) of NC parameter. We include the effects of earth rotation in our analysis. This study is done by investigating the effects of non commutativity on different time averaged cross section observables. The results which also depends on the position of the collider, can provide clear and distinct signatures of the model testable at the International Linear Collider(ILC).

D0 Dimuon Asymmetry in $B_s - \bar B_s$ Mixing and Constraints on New Physics

We study the consequences of the large dimuon asymmetry observed at D0. Physics beyond the standard model (SM) in $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing is required to explain the data. We first present a detailed analysis for model independent constraints on physics beyond the SM, and then study the implications for theoretical models which modify the SM results in different ways, such as $Z'$ with FCNC and R-parity violating SUSY contributions.

The Family SU(2)_l x SU(2)_h x U(1) Model

We consider extension of the standard model $SU(2)_l \times SU(2)_h \times U(1)$ where the first two families of quarks and leptons transform according to the $SU(2)_l$ group and the third family according to the $SU(2)_h$ group. In this approach, the largeness of top-quark mass is associated with the large vacuum expectation value of the corresponding Higgs field. The model predicts almost degenerate heavy $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons with non-universal couplings, and extra Higgs bosons. We present in detail the symmetry breaking mechanism, and carry out the subsequent phenomenology of the gauge sector. We compare the model with electroweak precision data, and conclude that the extra gauge bosons and the Higgs bosons whose masses lie in the TeV range, can be discovered at the LHC.

Invisible Higgs boson, continuous mass fields and unHiggs mechanism

We explore the consequences of an electroweak symmetry breaking sector which exhibits approximately scale invariant dynamics -- i.e., nontrivial fixed point behavior, as in unparticle models. One can think of an unHiggs as a composite Higgs boson with a continuous mass distribution. We find it convenient to represent the unHiggs in terms of a Kallen-Lehmann spectral function, from which it is simple to verify the generation of gauge boson and fermion masses, and unitarization of WW scattering. We show that a spectral function with broad support, which corresponds to approximate fixed point behavior over an extended range of energy, can lead to an effectively invisible Higgs particle, whose decays at LEP or LHC could be obscured by background.

Flavor Changing Effects in Family Nonuniversal Z' Models

Flavor-changing and CP-violating interactions of Z' to fermions are generally present in models with extra U(1) gauge symmetry that are string-inspired or related to broken gauged family symmetry. We study the consequences of such couplings in fermion electric dipole moments, muon g-2, and K and B meson mixings. From experimental limits or measured values, we constrain the off-diagonal Z' couplings to fermions. Some of these constraints are comparable or stronger than the existing constraints obtained from other observables.

On the Possibility of a New Boson X^0 (214 MeV) in Sigma^+ -> p mu^+ mu^-

We consider the existence of the state X^0 (214 MeV) in Sigma^+ -> p mu^+ mu^- decay found by the HyperCP collaboration. We assume that a fundamental spin zero boson X^0 coupled to quarks leads to flavor changing s -> d X^0 process. We estimate the scalar and pseudoscalar coupling constants by considering Sigma^+ -> p X^0 and K^+ -> pi^+ X^0 processes, and find that pseudoscalar coupling dominates. We then evaluate the branching ratios for K_L -> pi^0 pi^0 X^0, pi^+ pi^- X^0 and Omega^- -> Xi^- X^0 decays. All these rates are found to be in the measurable ranges. We also comment on X^0 coupling to muons and constraints from muon g-2.

Signals for CP Violation in Split Supersymmetry

Split supersymmetry is characterized by relatively light chargino and neutralino sector and very heavy sfermion sector. We study the consequence of CP violation in this scenario by evaluating two-loop contributions to electric dipole moments of fermions from Higgs-photon as well as $W$-$W$ diagrams. These contributions add coherently and produce electron and neutron electric dipole moments close to present bounds. We then explore Higgs production at a photon-photon collider, and consider the feasibility of measuring CP violating $hγγ$ coupling induced by chargino loops. Methods of enhancing the sensitivity are discussed. For lower chargino masses and lower Higgs boson masses, the effect of the CP violation can be observed with 90% confidence level significance.

CP violating SUSY effects in Penguin dominated modes B -> PHI K and B -> PHI K*

Recent measurement of time dependent asymmetries in $B \to ϕK$ are indicative of a new source of CP violation. We examine squark mixing in SUSY as this new source, and using QCD improved factorization method to describe $B \to ϕK $ decay, find the allowed range of parameter space for $ρ$ and $ψ$, the magnitude and phase of the down type LR(RL) squark mixing parameter $δ^{bs}_{LR(RL)}$. We then study $B \to ϕK^{*}$ and calculate the expected CP asymmetries in the same range of parameter space. We find that this asymmetry is in the range 15% to $20% $ for acceptable value of $B \to phi K^{*}$ branching ratio. We also predict the helicity dependent CP asymmetries in the same parameter space.

Flavor and CP violating Z exchange and the rate asymmetry in B --> phi K_S

Recent measurements of time dependent CP asymmetry in B --> phi K_S, if confirmed, would indicate a new source of CP violation. We examine flavor violating tree-level Z currents in models with extra down-type quark singlets that arise naturally in string compactified gauge groups like E_6. We evaluate the new operators at the scale mu = m_b in NLO, and using QCD improved factorization to describe B --> phi K_S, find the allowed range of parameters for rho and psi, the magnitude and phase of the flavor violating parameter U_{bs}. This allowed range does satisfy the constraint from flavor changing process b --> s l+ l- . However, further improvement in measurement of these rates could severely constrain the model.

New Source of CP violation in B physics ?

In this talk we discuss how the down type left-right squark mixing in Supersymmetry can induce a new source of CP violation in the time dependent asymmtries in B --> phi K process. We use QCD improved factorization process to calculate the hadronic matrix element for the process and find the allowed parameter space for $ρ$ and $ϕ$, the magnitude and phase of the down type LR(RL) squark mixing parameter $δ^{bs}_{LR(RL)}$. In the same allowed regin we calculate the expected CP asymmtries in the $B \to ϕK^{*}$ process.

Penguins and Mixing Dependent CP Violation

Constraints on angles of Unitarity triangle are reviewed, and in particular constraint on $γ$ from limit on $Δm_s$ is emphasized. Effects of penguin diagram on measurement of $β$ and $α$ are then reviewed. New measurements on $B \to π^+π^-$ in QCD improved factorization approximation suggest large penguin effects. It is possible to estimate the error in measurement of $α$ as a function of $γ$ for different $|V_{ub} /V_{cb}|$ values.

SU(3) Flavor Symmetry and CP Violating Rate Differences for Charmless $B\to P V$ Decays

We derive several relations between CP violating rate differences $Δ(B\to PV) = Γ(B\to PV) - Γ(\bar B \to \bar P \bar V)$ for charmless $B\to P V$ decays in the Standard Model using SU(3) flavor symmetry. It is found that although the relations between branching ratios of $ΔS = 0$ and $ΔS = -1$ processes are complicated, there are simple relations independent of hadronic models between some of the $ΔS =0$ and $ΔS = -1$ rate differences due to the unitarity property of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, such as $ Δ(B\to π^+ ρ^-) = -Δ(B\to π^+ K^{*-})$, $Δ(B\to π^- ρ^+) = - Δ(K^- ρ^+)$. SU(3) breaking effects are also estimated using factorization approximation. These relations can be tested at B factories in the near future.

Determining the Weak Phase $γ$ using the decays $B_d$, $B^+ \to K η(η')$ and $B_s \to πη(η')$

We suggest two methods (based on flavor SU(3) symmetry) to determine the CKM angle $γ$ using the decays $B_d$, $B^+ \to K η(η')$ and $B_s \to πη(η')$, respectively. Rescattering effects are partly included -- we neglect annihilation amplitudes, but do not assume any other relation between the SU(3) invariant amplitudes. We use the fact that the amplitude (including the Electroweak Penguin contribution) for $B_d$, $B^+ \to πK$ with final state $I (isospin) =3/2$ is known as a function of $γ$ from the decay rate $B^+ \to π^0 π^+$.

A grand unified model with $M_G\sim M_{string}$ and $M_I\sim 10^{12}$ GeV

We present a model based on the gauge group SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R \times SU(4)_C with gauge couplings that are found to be unified at a scale near the string unification scale. This model breaks to the MSSM at an intermediate scale which is instrumental in producing a neutrino in a mass range that can serve as hot dark matter and can also solve the strong CP problem via a harmless invisible axion.

Remarks on a Technique of Measuring CP phase $α$

We present a method to measure the CKM phase $α$ and the tree and penguin (strong and electroweak) amplitudes in $B \rightarrow ππ$ decays, based on isospin consideration and the weak assumption that all tree amplitudes have a common strong phase and all penguin amplitudes have a different common phase. The method needs only the time-independent measurements of the relevant decay rates in $B \rightarrow ππ$. We also propose a method to experimentally examine the validity of the assumption that all penguin amplitudes have the same strong phases, and to extract detailed informations about the hadronic matrix elements.

A Study of Some Methods for Measuring CKM CP Violating Phases

We study the influence of penguin (especially, electroweak penguin) effects on some methods of measuring the angles $α$, $β$, and $γ$ in the CKM unitarity triangle. We use next-to-leading order effective Hamiltonian, and present numerical estimates based on the factorization approximation. We find that some techniques suggested in the literature, especially for $α$ determination, are not workable in light of the electroweak penguin effects. Nevertheless, there are methods that would work for each angle determination. For angle $β$ we consider $B \rightarrow D^{+} D^{-}$ mode and estimate the penguin contamination. For angle $γ$ we consider a method based on SU(3) symmetry and carefully consider SU(3) breaking effects. We point out regions in the parameter space where this method could be used reliably.

CP Violation in a Multi-Higgs Doublet Model

We study CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model based on a $S_3 \times Z_3$ horizontal symmetry. We consider two mechanisms for CP violation in this model: a) CP violation due to complex Yukawa couplings; and b) CP violation due to scalar-pseudoscalar mixings. We find that the predictions for $ε'/ε$, CP violation in B decays and the electric dipole moments of neutron and electron are different between these two mechanisms. These predictions are also dramatically different from the minimal Standard Model predictions.

Gluon dipole penguin contributions to $ε'/ε$ and CP violation in Hyperon decays in the Standard Model

We consider the gluon dipole penguin operator contributions to $ε'/ε$ and CP violation in hyperon decays. It has been proposed by Bertolini et al. that the contribution to $ε'/ε$ may be significant. We show that there is a cancellation in the leading order contribution and this contribution is actually suppressed by a factor of order O($m_π^2, m_K^2)/Λ^2$. We find that the same operator also contributes to CP violation in hyperon decays where it is not suppressed. The gluon dipole penguin operator can enhance CP violation in hyperon decays by as much as 25\%.

Isospin Structure of Penguins And Their Consequences in $B$ Physics

Isospin structure of gluon mediated or strong penguin is significantly altered when the full electroweak corrections are included. This has the consequence that some previous analyses which relied on a simple isospin structure in charmless $B$ decays become inapplicable. We present the general Hamiltonian in next-to-leading order QCD, and illustrate our conclusion quantitatively for $B\rightarrow ππ$ and $B\rightarrow Kπ$ decays in the factorization approximation. Some remarks on CP asymmetries in $B$ decays are also made.

Predictive fermion mass matrix ansatzes in non-supersymmetric SO(10) grand unification

We investigate the status of predictive fermion mass ansatzes which make use of the grand unification scale conditions $m_e=m_d/3$, $m_μ=3m_s$, and $\mid V_{cb}\mid =\sqrt{m_{c}/m_{t}}$ in non-supersymmetric SO(10) grand unification. The gauge symmetry below an intermediate symmetry breaking scale $M_I$ is assumed to be that of the standard model with either one Higgs doublet or two Higgs doublets . We find in both cases that a maximum of 5 standard model parameters may be predicted within $1σ$ experimental ranges. We find that the standard model scenario predicts the low energy $\mid V_{cb}\mid$ to be in a range which includes its experimental mid-value 0.044 and which for a large top mass can extend to lower values than the range resulting in the supersymmetric case. In the two Higgs standard model case, we identify the regions of parameter space for which unification of the bottom quark and tau lepton Yukawa couplings is possible at grand unification scale. In fact, we find that unification of the top, bottom and tau Yukawa couplings is possible with the running b-quark mass within the $1σ$ preferred range $m_b=4.25\pm 0.1\, GeV$ provided $α_{3c}(M_Z)$ is near the low end of its allowed range. In this case, one may make 6 predictions which include $\mid V_{cb}\mid$ within its $90\%$ confidence limits. However unless the running mass $m_b>4.4\, GeV$, third generation Yukawa coupling unification requires the top mass to be greater than

CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model with flavor changing neutral current

We study CP violation in a multi-Higgs doublet model based on a $S_3 \times Z_3$ horizontal symmetry where CKM phase is not the principal source of CP violation. We consider two mechanisms for CP violation in this model: a) CP violation due to complex Yukawa couplings; and b) CP violation due to scalar-pseudoscalar Higgs boson mixings. Both mechanisms can explain the observed CP violation in the neutral Kaon system. $ε'/ε$ due to neutral Higgs boson exchange is small in both mechanisms, but charged Higgs boson con- tributions can be as large as $10^{-3}$ for a), and $10^{-4}$ for b). CP violation in the neutral B system is, however, quite different from the Minimal Standard Model. The neutron Electric Dipole Moment can be as large as the present ex- perimental bound, and can be used to constrain charged Higgs boson masses. The electron EDM is one order of magnitude below the experimental bound in case b) and smaller in case a).
