Reduction of Couplings in the MSSM

In this paper, we first demonstrate the existence of renormalization group invariant relations among the top, bottom Yukawa and the gauge colour couplings in the minimal supersymmetric SM. Based on this observation and assuming furthermore the existence of a renormalization group invariant relation among the trilinear couplings in the superpotential and the soft supersymmetry breaking sector, we obtain predictions for the Higgs masses and the supersymmetric spectrum.

Unification, KK-thresholds and the top Yukawa coupling in F-theory GUTs

In a class of F-theory SU(5) GUTs the low energy chiral mass spectrum is obtained from rank one fermion mass textures with a hierarchical structure organised by U(1) symmetries embedded in the exceptional E_8 group. In these theories chiral fields reside on matter `curves' and the tree level masses are computed from integrals of overlapping wavefuctions of the particles at the triple intersection points. This calculation requires knowledge of the exact form of the wavefuctions. In this work we propose a way to obtain a reliable estimate of the various quantities which determine the strength of the Yukawa couplings. We use previous analysis of KK threshold effects to determine the (ratios of) heavy mass scales of the theory which are involved in the normalization of the wave functions. We consider similar effects from the chiral spectrum of these models and discuss possible constraints on the emerging matter content. In this approach, we find that the Yukawa couplings can be determined solely from the U(1) charges of the states in the `intersection' and the torsion which is a topological invariant quantity. We apply the results to a viable SU(5) model with minimal spectrum which satisfies all the constraints imposed by our analysis. We use renormalization group analysis to estimate the top and bottom masses and find that they are in agreement with the experimental values.

Gauge coupling flux thresholds, exotic matter and the unification scale in F-SU(5) GUT

We explore the gauge coupling relations and the unification scale in F-theory SU(5) GUT broken down to the Standard Model by an internal U(1)Y gauge flux. We consider variants with exotic matter representations which may appear in these constructions and investigate their role in the effective field theory model. We make a detailed investigation on the conditions imposed on the extraneous matter to raise the unification scale and make the color triplets heavy in order to avoid fast proton decay. We also discuss in brief the implications on the gaugino masses.

Slab Bag Fermionic Casimir effect, Chiral Boundaries and Vector Boson - Majorana Fermion Pistons

In this article we consider the Casimir energy and force of massless Majorana fermions and vector bosons between parallel plates. The vector bosons satisfy perfect electric conductor boundary conditions while the Majorana fermions satisfy bag and chiral boundary conditions. We consider various piston configurations containing one vector boson and one fermion. We present a new regularization mechanism the piston offers. In our case regularization occurs explicitly at the Casimir energy density and not at the Casimir force level, as in usual pistons. We make use of boundary broken supersymmetry to explain the number of fields that appear in all the studied cases. The effect of chiral boundary conditions in a fermion boson system is investigated. Concerning the supersymmetry issue and the vanishing Casimir energy, we study a massive Dirac fermion-scalar boson system with bag and specific Robin type boundary conditions for which the Casimir energy vanishes. Finally a two scalar bosons system between parallel plates is presented in which the singularities vanish in the total Casimir energy. A discussion on boundary broken supersymmetry follows.

Standard and Non-Standard Extra Matter for Non-Supersymmetric Unification

We perform a general 1-loop analysis by adding extra matter to the SM content, as well as by allowing a non-standard U(1)Y normalization in order to achieve unification. We find numerous solutions with U(1)Y only charged extra matter and unification scale of the order of MU=10^{16} GeV, or with SU(2) charged extra matter with lower MU. We next identify the SM extra matter as originating from the breaking of SO(10) either through the Pati-Salam group SU(4)xSU(2)LxSU(2)R or the flipped SU(5). In both cases, unification can be achieved with a rather minimal extra content. Contrary to the one-step SU(5) unification, in the two-step SO(10) unification we are discussing, coulored extra matter is not necessary. Finally, we discuss a split-supersymmetry like case, where extra matter is added to the split supersymmetric spectrum in order to attain 1-loop unification.

Unified Models at Intermediate Energy Scales and Kaluza-Klein Excitations

We discuss the possibility of intermediate gauge coupling unification in unified models of string origin. Useful relations of the β-function coefficients are derived, which ensure unification of couplings when Kaluza--Klein excitations are included above the compactification scale. We apply this procedure to two models with SU(3)\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R and SU(4)\times O(4) gauge symmetries.

Predictive Ansatz for Fermion Masses in SUSY GUTS

We reexamine a succesful fermion mass Ansatz proposed by Giudice for a wide range of the ratio $tanβ=\frac {<\bar h>}{<h>}$ (where ${\bar h},h$ are the two standard higgs fields), in the context of supersymmetric grand unified theories. We find that the 7 predictions of the ansatz, $V_{us}, V_{cb}, V_{ub}, m_u, m_d, m_s$ and $m_b$ are in good agreement with the experiment when either {\it i) } $tanβ\simeq 1$ or {\it ii)} $tanβ\geq 30$. A correct prediction for the bottom mass gives a lower limit on $m_t\geq 125$ for case {\it (i)}, in agreement with the previous analysis, while in case {\it (ii)} $m_t\geq 145$.
