Probing spatial orientability of Friedmann--Robertson--Walker spatially flat spacetime

One important global topological property of a spacetime manifold is orientability. It is widely believed that spatial orientability can only be tested by global journeys around the Universe to check for orientation-reversing closed paths. Since such global journeys are not feasible, theoretical arguments that combine universality of physical experiments with local arrow of time, CP violation and CPT invariance are usually offered to support the choosing of time- and space-orientable spacetime manifolds. The nonexistence of globally defined spinor fields on a non-orientable spacetime is another theoretical argument for orientability. However, it is conceivable that orientability can be put to test by local physical effects. In this paper, we show that it is possible to locally access spatial orientability of a spatially flat Friedmann--Robertson-Walker spacetime through quantum vacuum electromagnestic fluctuations. We argue that a putative non-orientability of the spatial sections of spatially flat FRW spacetime can be ascertained by the study of the stochastic motions of a charged particle or a point electric dipole under quantum vacuum electromagnetic fluctuations. In particular, the stochastic motions of a dipole permit the recognition of a presumed non-orientability of $3-$space in itself.

Probing singularities in quantum cosmology with curvature scalars

We provide further evidence that the canonical quantization of cosmological models eliminates the classical Big Bang singularity, using the {\it DeBroglie-Bohm} interpretation of quantum mechanics. The usual criterion for absence of the Big Bang singularity in Friedmann-Robertson-Walker quantum cosmological models is the non-vanishing of the expectation value of the scale factor. We compute the `local expectation value' of the Ricci and Kretschmann scalars, for some quantum FRW models. We show that they are finite for all time. Since these scalars are elements of general scalar polynomials in the metric and the Riemann tensor, this result indicates that, for the quantum models treated here, the `local expectation value' of these general scalar polynomials should be finite everywhere. Therefore, we have further evidence that the quantization of the models treated here eliminates the classical Big Bang singularity. PACS: 04.40.Nr, 04.60.Ds, 98.80.Qc.

A Quantum Cosmological Model With Static and Dynamic Wormholes

Quantization is performed of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled with a conformally invariant scalar field and a perfect fluid with equation of state $p=αρ$. A well-known discrete set of static quantum wormholes is shown to exist for radiation ($α=1/3$), and a novel continuous set is found for cosmic strings ($α= -1/3$), the latter states having throat radii of any size. In both cases wave-packet solutions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation are obtained with all the properties of evolving quantum wormholes. In the case of a radiation fluid, a detailed analysis of the quantum dynamics is made in the context of the Bohm-de Broglie interpretation. It is shown that a repulsive quantum force inversely proportional to the cube of the scale factor prevents singularities in the quantum domain. For the states considered, there are no particle horizons either.

Canonical Transformations in a Higher-Derivative Field Theory

It has been suggested that the chiral symmetry can be implemented only in classical Lagrangians containing higher covariant derivatives of odd order. Contrary to this belief, it is shown that one can construct an exactly soluble two-dimensional higher-derivative fermionic quantum field theory containing only derivatives of even order whose classical Lagrangian exhibits chiral-gauge invariance. The original field solution is expressed in terms of usual Dirac spinors through a canonical transformation, whose generating function allows the determination of the new Hamiltonian. It is emphasized that the original and transformed Hamiltonians are different because the mapping from the old to the new canonical variables depends explicitly on time. The violation of cluster decomposition is discussed and the general Wightman functions satisfying the positive-definiteness condition are obtained.
