A New Test of Dynamical Dark Energy Models and Cosmic Tensions in Hořava Gravity

Horava gravity has been proposed as a renormalizable, higher-derivative, Lorentz-violating quantum gravity model without ghost problems. A Horava gravity based dark energy (HDE) model for dynamical dark energy has been also proposed earlier by identifying all the extra (gravitational) contributions from the Lorentz-violating terms as an effective energy-momentum tensor in Einstein equation. We consider a complete CMB, BAO, and SNe Ia data test of the HDE model by considering general perturbations over the background perfect HDE fluid. Except from BAO, we obtain the preference of non-flat universes for all other data-set combinations. We obtain a positive result on the cosmic tensions between the Hubble constant H0 and the cosmic shear S8, because we have a shift of H0 towards a higher value, though not enough for resolving the H0 tension, but the value of S8 is unaltered. This is in contrast to a rather decreasing H0 but increasing S8 in a non-flat LCDM. For all other parameters, like Omega_m and Omega_Lambda, we obtain quite comparable results with those of LCDM for all data sets, especially with BAO, so that our results are close to a cosmic concordance between the datasets, contrary to the standard non-flat LCDM. We also obtain some undesirable features, like an almost null result on Omegak, which gives back the flat LCDM, if we do not predetermine the sign of Omegak, but we propose several promising ways for improvements by generalizing our analysis.

No Scalar-Haired Cauchy Horizon Theorem in Einstein-Maxwell-Horndeski Theories

Recently, a no inner (Cauchy) horizon theorem for static black holes with non-trivial scalar hairs has been proved in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. In this paper, we extend the theorem to the static black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Horndeski theories. We study the black hole interior geometry for some exact solutions and find that the spacetime has a (space-like) curvature singularity where the black hole mass gets an extremum and the Hawking temperature vanishes. We discuss further extensions of the theorem, including general Horndeski theories from disformal transformations.

Quasi-Normal Modes and Stability of Einstein-Born-Infeld Black Holes in de Sitter Space

We study gravitational perturbations of electrically charged black holes in (3+1)-dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with a positive cosmological constant. For the axial perturbations, we obtain a set of decoupled Schrodinger-type equations, whose formal expressions, in terms of metric functions, are the same as those without cosmological constant, corresponding to the Regge-Wheeler equation in the proper limit. We compute the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of the decoupled perturbations using the Schutz-Iyer-Will's WKB method. We discuss the stability of the charged black holes by investigating the dependence of quasi-normal frequencies on the parameters of the theory, correcting some errors in the literature. It is found that all the axial perturbations are stable for the cases where the WKB method applies. There are cases where the conventional WKB method does not apply, like the three-turning-points problem, so that a more generalized formalism is necessary for studying their QNMs and stabilities. We find that, for the degenerate horizons with the "point-like" horizons at the origin, the QNMs are quite long-lived, close to the quasi-resonance modes, in addition to the "frozen" QNMs for the Nariai-type horizons and the usual (short-lived) QNMs for the extremal black hole horizons. This is a genuine effect of the branch which does not have the general relativity limit. We also study the exact solution near the (charged) Nariai limit and find good agreements even far beyond the limit for the imaginary frequency parts.

The Hamiltonian Dynamics of Horava Gravity

We consider the Hamiltonian formulation of Horava gravity in arbitrary dimensions, which has been proposed as a renormalizable gravity model for quantum gravity without the ghost problem. We study the "full" constraint analysis of the "non-projectable" Horava gravity whose potential, V(R), is an arbitrary function of the (intrinsic) Ricci scalar R. We find that there exist generally distinct cases of this theory, depending on (i) whether the Hamiltonian constraint generates new (second-class) constraints (Cases A, C) or just fixes the associated Lagrange multipliers (Case B), or (ii) whether the IR Lorentz-deformation parameter λis at the conformal point (Case C) or not (Cases A, B). It is found that, for Cases A and C, the dynamical degrees of freedom are the same as in general relativity, while, for Case B, there is "one additional phase-space degree of freedom", representing an extra (odd) scalar graviton mode. This would resolve the long-standing debates about the extra graviton modes and achieves the dynamical consistency of the Horava gravity, at the "fully non-linear" level. Several exact solutions are also considered as some explicit examples of the new constraints. The structure of the newly obtained, "extended" constraint algebra seems to be generic to Horava gravity and its general proof would be a challenging problem. Some other challenging problems, which include the path integral quantization and the Dirac bracket quantization are discussed also.

On a New Approach for Constructing Wormholes in Einstein-Born-Infeld Gravity

We study a new approach for the wormhole construction in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity, which does not require exotic matters in the Einstein equation. The Born-Infeld field equation is not modified from "coordinate independent" conditions of continuous metric tensor and its derivatives, even though the Born-Infeld fields have discontinuities in their derivatives at the throat in general. We study the relation of the newly introduced conditions with the usual continuity equation for the energy-momentum tensor and the gravitational Bianchi identity. We find that there is no violation of energy conditions for the Born-Infeld fields contrary to the usual approaches. The exoticity of energy-momentum tensor is not essential for sustaining wormholes. Some open problems are discussed.

Black Hole as a Wormhole Factory

On general grounds, one may argue that a black hole stops radiation at the Planck mass, where the radiated energy is comparable to the black hole's mass. And also, it has been argued that there would be a "wormhole-like" structure, known as "space-time foam", due to large fluctuations below the Planck length. In this paper, as an explicit example, we consider an exact classical solution which represents nicely those two properties in a recently proposed quantum gravity model based on different scaling dimensions between space and time coordinates. The solution, called "Black Wormhole", consists of two different states, depending on its mass M and an IR parameter omega: For the black hole state, a non-traversable wormhole occupies the interior region of the black hole around the singularity at the origin, whereas for the wormhole state, the interior wormhole is exposed to an outside observer as the black hole horizon is disappeared from evaporation. The black hole state becomes thermodynamically stable as it approaches to the merge point where the interior wormhole throat and the black hole horizon merges, and the Hawking temperature vanishes at the exact merge point. This solution suggests the "Generalized Cosmic Censorship" by the existence of a wormhole-like structure which protects the naked singularity even after the black hole evaporation. One could understand the would-be wormholes inside the black hole horizon as the results of microscopic wormholes created by "negative" energy quanta which have entered the black hole horizon in Hawking radiation processes: The quantum black hole could be a wormhole factory. It is found that this speculative picture may be consistent with the recent "ER=EPR" proposal for resolving the recent black hole entanglement debates.

The Rotating Black Hole in Renormalizable Quantum Gravity: The Three-Dimensional Hořava Gravity Case

Recently Hořava proposed a renormalizable quantum gravity, without the ghost problem, by abandoning Einstein's equal-footing treatment of space and time through the anisotropic scaling dimensions. Since then various interesting aspects, including the exact black hole solutions have been studied but no "rotating" black hole solutions have been found yet, except some limiting cases. In order to fill the gap, I consider a simpler three-dimensional set-up with z=2 and obtain the exact rotating black hole solution. This solution has a ring curvature singularity inside the outer horizon, like the four- dimensional Kerr black hole in Einstein gravity, as well as a curvature singularity at the origin. The usual mass bound works also here but in a modified form. Moreover, it is shown that the conventional first law of thermodynamics with the usual Hawking temperature and chemical potential does not work, which seems to be the genuine effect of Lorentz-violating gravity due to lack of the absolute horizon.

A New Extension of Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity and Curing Pathologies of the Scalar Graviton

We consider an extension of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity with extra conformal symmetry by introducing a scalar field with higher order curvature terms. Relaxing the exact local Weyl symmetry, we construct an action with three free parameters which breaks local anisotropic Weyl symmetry but still preserves residual global Weyl symmetry. At low energies, it reduces to a Lorentz-violating scalar-tensor gravity. With a constant scalar field background and particular choices of the parameters, it reduces to the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity, but any perturbation from these particular configurations produces some non-trivial extensions of HL gravity. The perturbation analysis of the new extended HL gravity in the Minkowski background shows thatthe pathological behaviors of scalar graviton, i.e., ghost or instability problem, and strong coupling problem do not emerge up to cubic order as well as quadratic order.

Horava Gravity and Gravitons at a Conformal Point

Recently Horava proposed a renormalizable gravity theory with higher derivatives by abandoning the Lorenz invariance in UV. Here, I study the Horava model at $λ=1/3$, where an anisotropic Weyl symmetry exists in the UV limit, in addition to the foliation-preserving diffeomorphism. By considering linear perturbations around Minkowski vacuum, I show that the scalar graviton mode is completely disappeared and only the usual tensor graviton modes remain in the physical spectrum. The existence of the UV conformal symmetry is unique to the theory with the detailed balance and it is quite probable that $λ=1/3$ be the UV fixed point. This situation is analogous to $λ=1$, which is Lorentz invariant in the IR limit and is believed to be the IR fixed point.

Remarks on the Scalar Graviton Decoupling and Consistency of Horava Gravity

Recently Horava proposed a renormalizable gravity theory with higher derivatives by abandoning the Lorenz invariance in UV. But there have been confusions regarding the extra scalar graviton mode and the consistency of the Horava model. I reconsider these problems and show that, in the Minkowski vacuum background, the scalar graviton mode can be consistency decoupled from the usual tensor graviton modes by imposing the (local) Hamiltonian as well as the momentum constraints.

A Test of Horava Gravity: The Dark Energy

Recently Horava proposed a renormalizable gravity theory with higher spatial derivatives in four dimensions which reduces to Einstein gravity with a non-vanishing cosmological constant in IR but with improved UV behaviors. Here, I consider a non-trivial test of the new gravity theory in FRW universe by considering an IR modification which breaks "softly" the detailed balance condition in the original Horava model. I separate the dark energy parts from the usual Einstein gravity parts in the Friedman equations and obtain the formula of the equations of state parameter. The IR modified Horava gravity seems to be consistent with the current observational data but we need some more refined data sets to see whether the theory is really consistent with our universe. From the consistency of our theory, I obtain some constraints on the allowed values of w_0 and w_a in the Chevallier, Polarski, and Linder's parametrization and this may be tested in the near future, by sharpening the data sets.

Constraint Dynamics and Gravitons in Three Dimensions

The complete non-linear three-dimensional Einstein gravity with gravitational Chern-Simons term and cosmological constant are studied in dreibein formulation. The constraints and their algebras are computed in an explicit form. From counting the number of first and second class constraints, the number of dynamical degrees of freedom, which equals to the number of propagating graviton modes, is found to be 1, "regardless of" the value of cosmological constant. I note also that the usual equivalence with Chern-Simons gauge theory does "not" work for general circumstances.

Smeared BTZ Black Hole from Space Noncommutativity

We study a novel phenomena of smearing of black hole horizons from the effect of space noncommutativity. We present an explicit example in $AdS_3$ space, using the Chern-Simons formulation of gravity. This produces a smeared BTZ black hole which goes beyond the classical spacetime unexpectedly and there is {\it no} reality problem in our approach with the gauge group $U(1,1) \times U(1,1)$. The horizons are smeared, due to a splitting of the Killing horizon and the apparent horizon, and there is a metric signature change to Euclidean in the smeared region. The inner boundary of the smeared region acts as a trapped surface for timelike particles but the outer as a classical barrier for ingoing particles. The lightlike signals can escape from or reach the smeared region in a {\it finite} time, which indicates that {\it the black hole is not so dark, even classically.} In addition, it is remarked that the Hawking temperature can {\it not} be defined by the regularity in the Euclidean geometry except in the non-rotating case, and the origin can be smeared by a {\it new} (apparent) horizon.

The Final State of Black Strings and p-Branes, and the Gregory-Laflamme Instability

It is shown that the usual entropy argument for the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability for $some$ appropriate black strings and $p$-branes gives surprising agreement up to a few percent. This may provide a strong support to the GL's horizon fragmentation, which would produce the array of higher-dimensional Schwarzschild-type's black holes finally. On the other hand, another estimator for the size of the black hole end-state relative to the compact dimension indicates a second order (i.e., smooth) phase transition for some $other$ appropriate compactifications and total dimension of spacetime wherein the entropy argument is not appropriate. In this case, Horowitz-Maeda-type's non-uniform black strings or $p$-branes can be the final state of the GL instability.

Near-Horizon Conformal Symmetry and Black Hole Entropy in Any Dimension

Recently, Carlip proposed a derivation of the entropy of the two-dimensional dilatonic black hole by investigating the Virasoro algebra associated with a newly introduced near-horizon conformal symmetry. We point out not only that the algebra of these conformal transformations is not well defined on the horizon, but also that the correct use of the eigenvalue of the operator $L_0$ yields vanishing entropy. It has been shown that these problems can be resolved by choosing a different basis of the conformal transformations which is regular even at the horizon. We also show the generalization of Carlip's derivation to any higher dimensional case in pure Einstein gravity. The entropy obtained is proportional to the area of the event horizon, but it also depends linearly on the product of the surface gravity and the parameter length of a horizon segment in consideration. We finally point out that this derivation of black hole entropy is quite different from the ones proposed so far, and several features of this method and some open issues are also discussed.

New Gauge Invariant Formulation of the Chern-Simons Gauge Theory: Classical and Quantal Analysis

Recently proposed new gauge invariant formulation of the Chern-Simons gauge theory is considered in detail. This formulation is consistent with the gauge fixed formulation. Furthermore it is found that the canonical (Noether) Poincaré generators are not gauge invariant even on the constraints surface and do not satisfy the Poincaré algebra contrast to usual case. It is the improved generators, constructed from the symmetric energy-momentum tensor, which are (manifestly) gauge invariant and obey the quantum as well as classical Poincaré algebra. The physical states are constructed and it is found in the Schrödinger picture that unusual gauge invariant longitudinal mode of the gauge field is crucial for constructing the physical wavefunctional which is genuine to (pure) Chern-Simons theory. In matching to the gauge fixed formulation, we consider three typical gauges, Coulomb, axial and Weyl gauges as explicit examples. Furthermore, recent several confusions about the effect of Dirac's dressing function and the gauge fixings are clarified. The analysis according to old gauge independent formulation a' la Dirac is summarized in an appendix.

Operator Ordering Problem of the Nonrelativistic Chern-Simons Theory

The operator ordering problem due to the quantization or regularization ambiguity in the Chern-Simons theory exists. However, we show that this can be avoided if we require Galilei covariance of the nonrelativistic Abelian Chern-Simons theory even at the quantum level for the extended sources. The covariance can be recovered only by choosing some particular operator orderings for the generators of the Galilei group depending on the quantization ambiguities of the $gauge-matter$ commutation relation. We show that the desired ordering for the unusual prescription is not the same as the well-known normal ordering but still satisfies all the necessary conditions. Furthermore, we show that the equations of motion can be expressed in a similar form regardless of the regularization ambiguity. This suggests that the different regularization prescriptions do not change the physics. On the other hand, for the case of point sources the regularization prescription is uniquely determined, and only the orderings, which are equivalent to the usual one, are allowed.
