Probing Virtual Axion-Like Particles by Precision Phase Measurements

We propose an experiment for detecting Axion-Like Particles (ALPs) based on the axion-photon interaction in the presence of a non-uniform magnetic field. The impact of virtual ALPs on the polarization of the photons inside a cavity is studied and a detection scheme is proposed. We find that the cavity normal modes are dispersed differently owing to their coupling to the ALPs in the presence of a background magnetic field. This birefringence, in turn, can be observed as a phase difference between the cavity polarization modes. The signal is considerably enhanced for a squeezed light source. We argue that the amplified signal allows for exclusion of a range of axion mass $6\times10^{-4}\text{eV}\lesssim m_{a}\lesssim 6\times10^{-3}\text{eV}$ even at very small axion-photon coupling constant with the potential to reach sensitivity to the QCD axion. Our scheme allows for the exclusion of a range of axion masses that has not yet been covered by other experimental techniques.

CMB $V$ modes from photon-photon forward scattering revisited

Recent literature has shown that photon-photon forward scattering mediated by Euler-Heisenberg interactions may generate some amount of the circular polarization ($V$ modes) in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons. However, there is an apparent contradiction among the different references about the predicted level of the amplitude of this circular polarization. In this work, we will resolve this discrepancy by showing that with a quantum Boltzmann equation formalism we obtain the same amount of circular polarization as using a geometrical approach that is based on the index of refraction of the cosmological medium. We will show that the expected amplitude of $V$ modes is expected to be $\approx$ 8 orders of magnitude smaller than the amplitude of $E$-polarization modes that we actually observe in the CMB, thus confirming that it is going to be challenging to observe such a signature. Throughout the paper, we also develop a general method to study the generation of $V$ modes from photon-photon and photon-spin-1-massive-particle forward scatterings without relying on a specific interaction, which thus represent possible new signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model.

CMB and reheating constraints to α-attractor inflationary models

After Planck 2013, a broad class of inflationary models called α-attractors was developed which has universal observational predictions. For small values of the parameter α, the models have good consistency with the recent CMB data. In this work, we first calculate analytically (and verify numerically) the predictions of these models for spectral index, n_s and tensor-to-scalar ratio, r and then using BICEP2/Keck 2015 data we impose constraints on α-attractors. Then, we study the reheating in α-attractors. The reheating temperature, T_{re} and the number of e-folds during reheating, N_{re} are calculated as functions of n_s. Using these results, we determine the range of free parameter αfor two clasees of α-attractors which satisfy the constraints of recent CMB data.

A Non-minimally Coupled Potential for Inflation and Dark Energy after Planck 2015: A Comprehensive Study

In this work we introduce a new plateau-like inflationary model including a quadratic scalar potential coupled non-minimally to gravity. This potential has a dominant constant energy density at early times which can realize successful inflation. It also includes an infinitesimal non-zero term $V_0$ responsible for explaining dark energy which causing the universe to expand accelerating at the late time. We show that this model predicts small tensor-to-scalar ratio of the order of $r\approx 0.01$ which is fully consistent with Planck constraints. Using the lower and upper bounds on reheating temperature, we provide additional constraints on the non-minimal coupling parameter $ξ$ of the model. We also study the preheating stage predicted by this kind of potentials using numerical calculations.

Dipole Modulation in Tensor Modes: Signatures in CMB Polarization

In this work we consider a dipole asymmetry in tensor modes and study the effects of this asymmetry on the angular power spectra of CMB. We derive analytical expressions for the $C_{l}^{TT}$ and $C_{l}^{BB}$ in the presence of such dipole modulation in tensor modes for $l<100$. We also discuss on the amplitude of modulation term and show that the $C_{l}^{BB}$ is considerably modified due to this term.

Anisotropic Inflation with the non-Vacuum Initial State

In this work we study models of anisotropic inflation with the generalized non-vacuum initial states for the inflaton field and the gauge field. The effects of non Bunch-Davies initial condition on the anisotropic power spectrum and bispectrum are calculated. We show that the non Bunch-Davies initial state can help to reduce the fine-tuning on the anisotropic power spectrum while reducing the level of anisotropic bispectrum.

The Effect of Curvaton Decay on the Primordial Power Spectrum

We study the effect of curvaton decay on the primordial power spectrum. Using analytical approximations and also numerical calculations, we find that the power spectrum is enhanced during the radiation dominated era after the curvaton decay. The amplitude of the Bardeen potential is controlled by the fraction of the energy density in the curvaton at the time of curvaton decay. We show that the enhancement in the amplitude of the primordial curvature perturbation is, however, not large enough to lead to primordial black hole overproduction on scales which re-enter the horizon after the time of curvaton decay.

Anisotropic Inflation from Charged Scalar Fields

We consider models of inflation with U(1) gauge fields and charged scalar fields including symmetry breaking potential, chaotic inflation and hybrid inflation. We show that there exist attractor solutions where the anisotropies produced during inflation becomes comparable to the slow-roll parameters. In the models where the inflaton field is a charged scalar field the gauge field becomes highly oscillatory at the end of inflation ending inflation quickly. Furthermore, in charged hybrid inflation the onset of waterfall phase transition at the end of inflation is affected significantly by the evolution of the background gauge field. Rapid oscillations of the gauge field and its coupling to inflaton can have interesting effects on preheating and non-Gaussianities.
