Limit linear series and ranks of multiplication maps

We develop a new technique for studying ranks of multiplication maps for linear series via limit linear series and degenerations to chains of genus-1 curves. We use this approach to prove a purely elementary criterion for proving cases of the Maximal Rank Conjecture, and then apply the criterion to several ranges of cases, giving a new proof of the case of quadrics, and also treating several families in the case of cubics. Our proofs do not require restrictions on direction of approach, so we recover new information on the locus in the moduli space of curves on which the maximal rank condition fails.

Rational Curves on Moduli Spaces of Vector Bundles

We completely describe the components of expected dimension of the Hilbert Scheme of rational curves of fixed degree $k$ in the moduli space ${\rm SU}_{C}(r,L)$ of semistable vector bundles of rank $r$ and determinant $L$ on a curve $C$. We show that for every $k \geq 1$ there are ${\rm gcd}(r, °L)$ unobstructed components. In addition, if $k$ is divisible by $r_1(r-r_1)(g-1)$ for $1\le r_1\le r-1$, there is an additional obstructed component of the expected dimension for each such $r_1$. We construct families of obstructed components and show that their generic point is not the generic vector bundle of given rank and determinant. Finally, we also obtain an upper bound on the degree of rational connectedness of ${\rm SU}_{C}(r,L)$ which is linear in the dimension.

Invariants of the Brill-Noether curve

For a projective nonsingular curve of genus $g$, the Brill-Noether locus $W^r_d(C)$ parametrizes line bundles of degree $d$ over $C$ with at least $r+1$ sections. When the curve is generic and the Brill-Noether number $ρ(g,r,d)$ equals $1$, one can then talk of the \emph{Brill-Noether curve}. In this paper, we explore the first two invariants of this curve, giving a new way of calculating the genus of this curve and computing its gonality when $C$ has genus 5.

Some examples of vector bundles in the base locus of the generalized theta divisor

This paper shows that on the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of fixed rank and determinant (of any degree) on a smooth curve of genus at least two, the base locus of the generalized theta divisor is large provided the rank is sufficiently large. It also shows that the base locus is large for positive multiples of the theta divisor. This work extends results already known for the case where the determinant is of degree zero.

Linked alternating forms and linked symplectic Grassmannians

Motivated by applications to higher-rank Brill-Noether theory and the Bertram-Feinberg-Mukai conjecture, we introduce the concepts of linked alternating and linked symplectic forms on a chain of vector bundles, and show that the linked symplectic Grassmannians parametrizing chains of subbundles isotropic for a given linked symplectic form has good dimensional behavior analogous to that of the classical symplectic Grassmannian.
