Complexity as a holographic probe of strong cosmic censorship

Based on reasonable assumptions, we propose a new expression for Lloyd's bound, which confines the complexity growth of charged black holes. We then revisit holographic complexity for charged black branes in the presence of a finite cutoff. Using the proposed Lloyd's bound we find a relation between the UV and the behind the horizon cutoff. This is found to be consistent with the factorization of the partition function at leading order in large N. We argue that the result may be thought of as a holographic realization of strong cosmic censorship.

Complexity via Replica Trick

We consider the complexity of a single-sided AdS black hole as modelled by an end-of-the-world brane. In addition, we present multi-boundary partition functions and matter correlation functions for such a setting. We compute the complexity using a modified replica trick corresponding to the "quenched geodesic length" in JT gravity. The late-time behaviour of complexity shows a saturation to a constant value of order $e^{S_0}$ following a period of linear growth. Furthermore, we show that our approach leads to an improved result for the variance of complexity, namely it being time-independent at late times. We conclude by commenting on the introduction of dynamical end-of-the-world branes.

Complexity and Near Extremal Charged Black Branes

We compute holographic complexity of charged black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions for the near horizon limit of near extremal case using two different methods. The corresponding complexity may be obtained either by taking the limit from the complexity of the charged black brane, or by computing the complexity for near horizon limit of near extremal solution. One observes that these results coincide if one assumes to have a cutoff behind horizon whose value is fixed by UV cutoff and also taking into account a proper counterterm evaluated on this cutoff. We also consider the situation for Vaidya charged black branes too.

Island in the Presence of Higher Derivative Terms

Using extended island formula we compute entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation for black hole solutions of certain gravitational models containing higher derivative terms. To be concrete we consider two different four dimensional models to compute entropy for both asymptotically flat and AdS black holes. One observes that the resultant entropy follows the Page curve, thanks to the contribution of the island, despite the fact that the corresponding gravitational models might be non-unitary.

On Free Energy for Deformed JT Gravity

In this paper, we study a particular deformation of the Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity recently considered by Maxfield, Turiaci and independently by Witten. We will compute the partition function of this model as well as its higher order correlators to all orders in genus expansion in the low temperature limit for small perturbations. In this limit, the results match with those obtained from the Airy limit of a Hermitian random matrix ensemble. Using this result, we will also study the free energy of the model. One observes that although the annealed free energy has pathological behaviors, under certain assumptions, the quenched free energy evaluated by replica trick exhibits the desired properties at low temperatures.

An Infalling Observer and Behind the Horizon Cutoff

Using Papadodimas and Raju construction of operators describing the interior of a black hole, we present a general relation between partition functions of operators describing inside and outside the black hole horizon. In particular for an eternal black hole the partition function of the interior modes may be given in terms those partition functions associated with the modes of left and right exteriors. By making use of this relation we observe that setting a finite UV cutoff will enforce us to have a cutoff behind the horizon whose value is fixed by the UV cutoff. The resultant cutoff is in agreement with what obtained in the context of holographic complexity.

Holographic Complexity

For a field theory with a gravitational dual, following Susskind's proposal we define holographic complexity for a subsystem. The holographic complexity is proportional to the volume of a co-dimension one time slice in the bulk geometry enclosed by the extremal co-dimension two hyper-surface appearing in the computation of the holographic entanglement entropy. The proportionally constant, up to a numerical order of one factor is G R where G is the Newton constant and R is the curvature of the space time. We study this quantity in certain holographic model. We also explore a possible relation between the defined quantity and fidelity appearing in quantum information literature.

New Bi-Gravity from New Massive Garvity

Using the action of three dimensional New Massive Gravity (NMG) we construct a new bi-gravity in three dimensions. This can be done by promoting the rank two auxiliary field appearing in the expression of NMG's action into a dynamical field. We show that small fluctuations around the AdS vacuum of the model are non-tachyonic and ghost free within certain range of the parameters of the model. We study central charges of the dual field theory and observe that in this range they are positive too. This suggests that the proposed model might be a consistent three dimensional bi-gravity.

On Butterfly effect in Higher Derivative Gravities

We study butterfly effect in $D$-dimensional gravitational theories containing terms quadratic in Ricci scalar and Ricci tensor. One observes that due to higher order derivatives in the corresponding equations of motion there are two butterfly velocities. The velocities are determined by the dimension of operators whose sources are provided by the metric. The three dimensional TMG model is also studied where we get two butterfly velocities at generic point of the moduli space of parameters. At critical point two velocities coincide.

Entanglement Entropy for Singular Surfaces in Hyperscaling violating Theories

We study the holographic entanglement entropy for singular surfaces in theories described holographically by hyperscaling violating backgrounds. We consider singular surfaces consisting of cones or creases in diverse dimensions. The structure of UV divergences of entanglement entropy exhibits new logarithmic terms whose coefficients, being cut-off independent, could be used to define new central charges in the nearly smooth limit. We also show that there is a relation between these central charges and the one appearing in the two-point function of the energy-momentum tensor. Finally we examine how this relation is affected by considering higher-curvature terms in the gravitational action.

On the Time Evolution of Holographic n-partite Information

We study various scaling behaviors of n-partite information during a process of thermalization after a global quantum quench for n disjoint system consisting of n parallel strips whose widths are much larger than the separation between them. By making use of the holographic description for entanglement entropy we explore holographic description of the n-partite information by which we show that it has a definite sign: it is positive for even n and negative for odd n. This might be thought of as an intrinsic property of a field theory which has gravity dual.

Conformally Lifshitz solutions from Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We show that the IR action of the healthy non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity and its small modification exhibit asymptotically Lifshitz and hyperscaling violating solutions, respectively. The model may also have an AdS$_2\times R^d$ vacuum solution. By making use of our results, one may wonder that within the context of HL gravity the Lifshitz fixed point might be treated as a CFT deformed by the time component of a vector operator.

Entanglement Entropy for Logarithmic Conformal Field Theory

We study holographic entanglement entropy for certain logarithmic conformal field theories by making use of their gravity descriptions. The corresponding gravity descriptions are provided by higher derivative gravity at critical points where the equations of motion degenerate leading to a log gravity. When the central charge of the dual theory is zero, the entanglement entropy has a new divergent term whose coefficient is given by the new anomaly of the logarithmic conformal field theory.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy for 4D Conformal Gravity

Using the proposal for holographic entanglement entropy in higher derivative gravities, we compute holographic entanglement entropy for the conformal gravity in four dimensions which turns out to be finite. However, if one subtracts the contribution of the four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet term, the corresponding entanglement entropy has a divergent term and indeed restricted to an Einstein solution of the conformal gravity, the resultant entanglement entropy is exactly the same as that in the Einstein gravity. We will also make a comment on the first law of the entanglement thermodynamics for the conformal gravity in four dimensions.

On 3D Minimal Massive Gravity

We study linearized equations of motion of the newly proposed three dimensional gravity, known as minimal massive gravity, using its metric formulation. We observe that the resultant linearized equations are exactly the same as that of TMG by making use of a redefinition of the parameters of the model. In particular the model admits logarithmic modes at the critical points. We also study several vacuum solutions of the model, specially at a certain limit where the contribution of Chern-Simons term vanishes.

Thermalization in backgrounds with hyperscaling violating factor

We present an analytic solution of a Vaidya-charged black hole with a hyperscaling violating factor in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton model, where the scalar potential plays a key role in the existence of the solution. By making use of this result, we study the process of thermalization after a global quench in a theory which its gravitational description is provided by the resultant solution in the case of zero charge. In particular, we probe the system by entanglement entropy and show that it exhibits certain scaling behaviors during the process.

Charged Black Branes with Hyperscaling Violating Factor

We present an analytic solution of a charged black hole with hyperscaling violating factor in an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model where the scalar potential is key to the existence of a solution. This solution provides a candidate gravitational description of theories with hyperscaling violation at both finite temperature and finite charge density. Using this background we explore certain features of these theories via AdS/CFT correspondence. Finally, we discuss embeddings based on the well-known sphere reductions of ten and eleven-dimensional supergravity.

Cosmological Perturbations in Inflationary Models with Anisotropic Space-Time Scaling in Lifshitz Background

Models of inflation in a gravitational background with an anisotropic space-time scaling are studied. The background is a higher-dimensional Lifshitz throat with the anisotropy scaling $z\neq 1$. After the dimensional reduction, the four-dimensional general covariance is explicitly broken to a three-dimensional spatial diffeomorphism. As a result the cosmological perturbation theory in this set up with less symmetries have to be formulated. We present the consistent cosmological perturbation theory for this set up. We find that the effective four-dimensional gravitational wave perturbations propagate with a different speed than the higher dimensional gravitational excitations. Depending on the model parameters, for an observer inside the throat, the four-dimensional gravitational wave propagation can be superluminal. We also find that the Bardeen potential and the Newtonian potential are different. This can have interesting observational consequences for lensing and CMB fluctuations. Furthermore, we show that at the linearized level the inflaton field excitations vanish.

Entanglement Thermodynamics

We study entanglement entropy for an excited state by making use of the proposed holographic description of the entanglement entropy. For a sufficiently small entangling region and with reasonable identifications we find an equation between entanglement entropy and energy which is reminiscent of the first law of thermodynamics. We then suggest four statements which might be thought of as four laws of entanglement thermodynamics.

Probing Fractionalized Charges

Inspired by holographic entanglement entropy, for geometries with non-zero abelian charges, we define a quantity which is sensitive to the background charges. One observes that there is a critical charge below that the system is mainly described by the metric and the effects of the background charges are just via metric's components. While for charges above the critical one the background gauge field plays an essential role. This, in turn, might be used to define an order parameter to probe phases of a system with fractionalized charges.

Fermions on Lifshitz Background

We study a non-relativistic fermionic retarded Green's function by making use of a fermion on the Lifshitz geometry with critical exponent z = 2. With a natural boundary condition, respecting the symmetries of the model, the resultant retarded Green's function exhibits a number of interesting features including a flat band. We also study the finite temperature and finite chemical potential cases where the geometry is replaced by Lifshitz black hole solutions.

Holographic Aspects of Two-charged Dilatonic Black Hole in AdS5

We study certain features of a strongly coupled theory whose gravitational dual is given by two-charge dilatonic black hole in AdS5 which has recently been used to study holographic Fermi liquids. By making use of the gravity description, we have studied conductivity, holographic entanglement entropy and dynamics of a charged scalar field. In particular at low energy we find that the temperature dependence of the real part of the conductivity goes as T^3 and the background is stable against scalar condensations.

On Holography with Hyperscaling Violation

We study certain features of strongly coupled theories with hyperscaling violation by making use of their gravitational duals. We will consider models with an anisotropic scaling in time or in one of spatial directions. In particular for the case where the anisotropic scaling is along a spatial direction we will compute the holographic entanglement entropy and show that for specific values of the parameters it exhibits a logarithmic violation of the area law. We will also probe the backgrounds by different closed and open strings which in turn can be used to read, for example, effective potential of an external object, drag force and etc.

D-Dimensional Log Gravity

We study Einstein gravity in dimensions $D\geq 4$ modified by curvature squared at critical point where the theory contains only massless gravitons. We show that at the critical point a new mode appears leading to a logarithmic gravity in the theory. The corresponding logarithmic solution may provide a gravity description of logarithmic CFT in higher dimensions. We note also that for special values of the parameters of the theory, the model admits solutions with non-relativistic isometries.

DBI Lifshitz Inflation

A new model of DBI inflation is introduced where the mobile brane, the inflaton field, is moving relativistically inside a Lifshitz throat with an arbitrary anisotropic scaling exponent $z$. After dimensional reduction to four dimension the general covariance is broken explicitly both in the matter and the gravitational sectors. The general action for the metric and matter field perturbations are obtained and it is shown to be similar to the classifications made in the effective field theory of inflation literature.

P-Wave Holographic Insulator/Superconductor Phase Transition

Using a five dimensional AdS soliton in an Einstein-Yang-Mills theory with SU(2) gauge group we study p-wave holographic insulator/superconductor phase transition. To explore the phase structure of the model we consider the system in the probe limit as well as fully back reacted solutions. We will also study zero temperature limit of the p-wave holographic superconductor in four dimensions.

preprint2010arXiv

Holographic Renormalization of New Massive Gravity

We study holographic renormalization for three dimensional new massive gravity (NMG). By studying the general fall off conditions for the metric allowed by the model at infinity, we show that at the critical point where the central charges of the dual CFT are zero it contains a leading logarithmic behavior. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence it can be identified as a source for an irrelevant operator in the dual CFT. The presence of the logarithmic fall off may be interpreted as the fact that the dual CFT would be a LCFT.

Asymptotic symmetry of geometries with Schrodinger isometry

We show that the asymptotic symmetry algebra of geometries with Schrodinger isometry in any dimension is an infinite dimensional algebra containing one copy of Virasoro algebra. It is compatible with the fact that the corresponding geometries are dual to non-relativistic CFTs whose symmetry algebra is the Schrodinger algebra which admits an extension to an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra containing a Virasoro subalgebra.

Fermions in non-relativistic AdS/CFT correspondence

We extend the non-relativistic AdS/CFT correspondence to the fermionic fields. In particular we study the two point function of a fermionic operator in non-relativistic CFTs by making use of a massive fermion propagating in geometries with Schrodinger group isometry. Although the boundary of the geometries with Schrodinger group isometry differ from that in AdS geometries where the dictionary of AdS/CFT is established, using the general procedure of AdS/CFT correspondence, we see that the resultant two point function has the expected form for fermionic operators in non-relativistic CFTs, though a non-trivial regularization may be needed.

2D Gravity on $AdS_2$ with Chern-Simons Corrections

We study 2D Maxwell-dilaton gravity with higher order corrections given by the Chern-Simons term. The model admits three distinctive $AdS_2$ vacuum solutions. By making use of the entropy function formalism we find the entropy of the solutions which is corrected due to the presence of the Chern-Simons term. We observe that the form of the correction depends not only on the coefficient of the Chern-Simons term, but also on the sign of the electric charge; pointing toward the chiral nature of the dual CFT. Using the asymptotic symmetry of the theory as well as requiring a consistent picture we can find the central charge and the level of U(1) current. Upon uplifting the solutions to three dimensions we get purely geometric solutions which will be either $AdS_3$ or warped $AdS_3$ with an identification.

On 5D Small Black Holes

Using higher order corrections we argue that five dimensional N=2 and N=4 small black holes exhibit supersymmetry enhancement in near horizon geometry leading to eight and sixteen supercharges, respectively. Using this enhancement at supergravity level we can identify the global supergroup of the near horizon geometry. In particular we show how this supergroup distinguishes between small and large black holes in N=2 case.

Multi-spin string solutions in AdS Black Hole and confining backgrounds

We study semi-classical multi-spin strings in the non-supersymmetric backgrounds of $AdS$ Black Hole and Witten's confining model. We consider constant radius strings with rotations along the isometries of the backgrounds. In the $AdS$ Black Hole, solutions exist only if there is a non-zero spin in the Black Hole part. In contrast with the $AdS$ background, we find solutions which although have no rotation in the $S^5$ part, have a regular $λ$ expansion in the expression for large energy. In the near-extremal $D_3$ and $D_4$ backgrounds, we find that strings have to be located on the confining wall. We also discuss the stability of solutions by considering the fluctuation Lagrangians.

The dS/dS Correspondence

We present a holographic duality for the de Sitter static patch which consolidates basic features of its geometry and the behavior of gravity and brane probes, valid on timescales short compared to the decay or Poincare recurrence times. Namely de Sitter spacetime $dS_d(R)$ in $d$ dimensions with curvature radius $R$ is holographically dual to two conformal field theories on $dS_{d-1}(R)$, cut off at an energy scale 1/R where they couple to each other and to $d-1$ dimensional gravity. As part of our analysis, we study brane probes in de Sitter and thermal Anti de Sitter spaces, and interpret the terms in the corresponding DBI action via strongly coupled thermal field theory. This provides a dual field theoretic interpretation of the fact that probes take forever to reach a horizon in general relativity.

N=1 G_2 SYM theory and Compactification to Three Dimensions

We study four dimensional N=2 G_2 supersymmetric gauge theory on R^3\times S^1 deformed by a tree level superpotential. We will show that the exact superpotential can be obtained by making use of the Lax matrix of the corresponding integrable model which is the periodic Toda lattice based on the dual of the affine G_2 Lie algebra. At extrema of the superpotential the Seiberg-Witten curve typically factorizes, and we study the algebraic equations underlying this factorization. For U(N) theories the factorization was closely related to the geometrical engineering of such gauge theories and to matrix model descriptions, but here we will find that the geometrical interpretation is more mysterious. Along the way we give a method to compute the gauge theory resolvent and a suitable set of one-forms on the Seiberg-Witten curve. We will also find evidence that the low-energy dynamics of G_2 gauge theories can effectively be described in terms of an auxiliary hyperelliptic curve.

On the Multi Trace Superpotential and Corresponding Matrix Model

We study N=1 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory coupled to an adjoint scalar superfiled with a cubic superpotential containing a multi trace term. We show that the field theory results can be reproduced from a matrix model which its potential is given in terms of a linearized potential obtained from the gauge theory superpotential by adding some auxiliary nondynamical field. Once we get the effective action from this matrix model we could integrate out the auxiliary field getting the correct field theory results.

One-Loop Perturbative Corrections to non(anti)commutativity Parameter of N=1/2 Supersymmetric U(N) Gauge Theory

Perturbative corrections to N=1/2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory at one-loop order are studied. It is shown that whereas the quantum corrections to N=1 sector of the theory are not affected by the C-deformation, the non(anti)commutativity parameter C receives one-loop perturbative corrections. These perturbative corrections are computed by performing an explicit one-loop calculation of the three and four-point functions of the theory. The running of the non(anti)commutativity parameter C is also studied using an appropriate Callan-Symanzik equation.

Branes in Time-Dependent Backgrounds and AdS/CFT Correspondence

We study supergravity solutions of Dp-branes in the time-dependent orbifold background. We show that worldvolume theories decouple from the bulk gravity for p less than six. Along AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions could provide the gravity description of noncommutative field theory with time-dependent noncommutative parameter. Type II NS5-brane (M5-brane) in the presence of RR n-form for n=0,..., 4 (C field) in this time-dependent background have also been studied.

D-Brane Solutions from New Isometries of pp-Waves

We use recently proposed translations isometries of pp-waves to construct D4 and D3 brane solutions, using T-duality transformations, in exactly solvable pp-wave background originating from $AdS_3\times S^3$ geometry. A unique property of the new brane solutions is the breaking of SO(10-p-1) symmetry in the transverse direction of the branes due to the presence of constant NS-NS and R-R background fluxes. We verify that the our `localized' solutions satisfy the field equations and explicitly present the corresponding Killing spinors. We also show the connection of our results to certain M5-branes in pp-wave geometry.

PP-waves from Nonlocal Theories

We study the Penrose limit of ODp theory. There are two different PP-wave limits of the theory. One of them is a ten dimensional PP-wave and the other a four dimensional one. We observe the later one leads to an exactly solvable background for type II string theories where we have both NS and RR fields. The Penrose limit of different branes of string (M-theory) in a nonzero B/E field (C field) is also studied. These backgrounds are conjectured to provide dual description of NCSYM, NCOS and OM theory. We see that under S-duality the subsector of NCSYM$_4$ and NCOS$_4$ which are dual to the corresponding string theory on PP-wave coming from NCYM$_4$ and NCOS$_4$ map to each other for given null geodesic.

Supergravity Description of the Large N Noncommutative Dipole Field Theories

We consider system of Dp-branes in the presence of a nonzero B field with one leg along brane worldvolume and the other transverse to it. We study the corresponding supergravity solutions and show that the worldvolume theories decouple from gravity for $p\leq 5$. Therefore these solutions provide dual description of large N noncommutative dipole field theories. We shall only consider those systems which preserve 8 supercharges in the branes worldvolume. We analyze the system of M5-branes and NS5-branes in the presence of nonzero C field and RR field with one leg along the transverse direction and the others along the worldvolume of the brane, respectively. This could provide a new deformation of (2,0) and little string field theories. Finally, we study the Wilson loops using the dual gravity descriptions.
