Rational digit systems over finite fields and Christol's Theorem

Let P,Q∈Fq[X]∖{0}P, Q\in \mathbb{F}_q[X]\setminus\{0\} be two coprime polynomials over the finite field Fq\mathbb{F}_q with deg⁡P>deg⁡Q\operatorname{deg}{P} > \operatorname{deg}{Q}. We represent each polynomial ww over Fq\mathbb{F}_q by w=∑i=0ksiQ(PQ)iw=\sum_{i=0}^k\frac{s_i}{Q}{\left(\frac{P}{Q}\right)}^i using a rational base P/QP/Q and digits si∈Fq[X]s_i\in\mathbb{F}_q[X] satisfying deg⁡si<deg⁡P\operatorname{deg}{s_i} < \operatorname{deg}{P}. Digit expansions of this type are also defined for formal Laurent series over Fq\mathbb{F}_q. We prove uniqueness and automatic properties of these expansions. Although the ωω-language of the possible digit strings is not regular, we are able to characterize the digit expansions of algebraic elements. In particular, we give a version of Christol's Theorem by showing that the digit string of the digit expansion of a formal Laurent series is automatic if and only if the series is algebraic over Fq[X]\mathbb{F}_q[X]. Finally, we study relations between digit expansions of formal Laurent series and a finite fields version of Mahler's 3/23/2-problem.

Querying and Manipulating Temporal Databases

Many works have focused, for over twenty five years, on the integration of the time dimension in databases (DB). However, the standard SQL3 does not yet allow easy definition, manipulation and querying of temporal DBs. In this paper, we study how we can simplify querying and manipulating temporal facts in SQL3, using a model that integrates time in a native manner. To do this, we propose new keywords and syntax to define different temporal versions for many relational operators and functions used in SQL. It then becomes possible to perform various queries and updates appropriate to temporal facts. We illustrate the use of these proposals on many examples from a real application.
