Information Decoding and SDR Implementation of DFRC Systems Without Training Signals

Recent performance analysis of dual-function radar communications (DFRC) systems, which embed information using phase shift keying (PSK) into multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) frequency hopping (FH) radar pulses, shows promising results for addressing spectrum sharing issues between radar and communications. However, the problem of decoding information at the communication receiver remains challenging, since the DFRC transmitter is typically assumed to transmit only information embedded radar waveforms and not the training sequence. We propose a novel method for decoding information at the communication receiver without using training data, which is implemented using a software-defined radio (SDR). The performance of the SDR implementation is examined in terms of bit error rate (BER) as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for differential binary and quadrature phase shift keying modulation schemes and compared with the BER versus SNR obtained with numerical simulations.

Automatic Arm Motion Recognition Based on Radar Micro-Doppler Signature Envelopes

In considering human-machine interface (HMI) for smart environment, a simple but effective method is proposed for automatic arm motion recognition with a Doppler radar sensor. Arms, in lieu of hands, have stronger radar cross-section and can be recognized from relatively longer distances. An energy-based thresholding algorithm is applied to the spectrograms to extract the micro-Doppler (MD) signature envelopes. The positive and negative frequency envelopes are concatenated to form a feature vector. The nearest neighbor (NN) classifier with Manhattan distance (L1) is then used to recognize the arm motions. It is shown that this simple method yields classification accuracy above 97 percent for six classes of arm motions. Despite its simplicity, the proposed method is superior to those of handcrafted featurebased classifications and low-dimension representation techniques based on principal component analysis (PCA), and is comparable to convolutional neural network (CNN).

2-D Coherence Factor for Sidelobe and Ghost Suppressions in Radar Imaging

The coherence factor (CF) is defined as the ratio of coherent power to incoherent power received by the radar aperture. The incoherent power is computed by the multi-antenna receiver based on only the spatial variable. In this respect, it is a one-dimensional (1-D) CF, and thereby the image sidelobes in down-range cannot be effectively suppressed. We propose a two-dimensional (2-D) CF by supplementing the 1-D CF by an incoherent sum dealing with the frequency dimension. In essence, we employ both spatial diversity and frequency diversity which, respectively, enhance imaging quality in cross range and range. Simulations and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the performance advantages of the proposed approach.
