Reflections on the Matter of 3d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Vacua and Local $Spin(7)$ Compactifications

We use Higgs bundles to study the 3d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ vacua obtained from M-theory compactified on a local $Spin(7)$ space given as a four-manifold $M_4$ of ADE singularities with further generic enhancements in the singularity type along one-dimensional subspaces. There can be strong quantum corrections to the massless degrees of freedom in the low energy effective field theory, but topologically robust quantities such as "parity" anomalies are still calculable. We show how geometric reflections of the compactification space descend to 3d reflections and discrete symmetries. The "parity" anomalies of the effective field theory descend from topological data of the compactification. The geometric perspective also allows us to track various perturbative and non-perturbative corrections to the 3d effective field theory. We also provide some explicit constructions of well-known 3d theories, including those which arise as edge modes of 4d topological insulators, and 3d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ analogs of grand unified theories. An additional result of our analysis is that we are able to track the spectrum of extended objects and their transformations under higher-form symmetries.

T-Branes and $G_2$ Backgrounds

Compactification of M- / string theory on manifolds with $G_2$ structure yields a wide variety of 4D and 3D physical theories. We analyze the local geometry of such compactifications as captured by a gauge theory obtained from a three-manifold of ADE singularities. Generic gauge theory solutions include a non-trivial gauge field flux as well as normal deformations to the three-manifold captured by non-commuting matrix coordinates, a signal of T-brane phenomena. Solutions of the 3D gauge theory on a three-manifold are given by a deformation of the Hitchin system on a marked Riemann surface which is fibered over an interval. We present explicit examples of such backgrounds as well as the profile of the corresponding zero modes for localized chiral matter. We also provide a purely algebraic prescription for characterizing localized matter for such T-brane configurations. The geometric interpretation of this gauge theory description provides a generalization of twisted connected sums with codimension seven singularities at localized regions of the geometry. It also indicates that geometric codimension six singularities can sometimes support 4D chiral matter due to physical structure "hidden" in T-branes.

Black hole thermodynamics from a variational principle: Asymptotically conical backgrounds

The variational problem of gravity theories is directly related to black hole thermodynamics. For asymptotically locally AdS backgrounds it is known that holographic renormalization results in a variational principle in terms of equivalence classes of boundary data under the local asymptotic symmetries of the theory, which automatically leads to finite conserved charges satisfying the first law of thermodynamics. We show that this connection holds well beyond asymptotically AdS black holes. In particular, we formulate the variational problem for $\mathcal{N}=2$ STU supergravity in four dimensions with boundary conditions corresponding to those obeyed by the so called `subtracted geometries'. We show that such boundary conditions can be imposed covariantly in terms of a set of asymptotic second class constraints, and we derive the appropriate boundary terms that render the variational problem well posed in two different duality frames of the STU model. This allows us to define finite conserved charges associated with any asymptotic Killing vector and to demonstrate that these charges satisfy the Smarr formula and the first law of thermodynamics. Moreover, by uplifting the theory to five dimensions and then reducing on a 2-sphere, we provide a precise map between the thermodynamic observables of the subtracted geometries and those of the BTZ black hole. Surface terms play a crucial role in this identification.

String Consistency, Heavy Exotics, and the $750$ GeV Diphoton Excess at the LHC

String consistency conditions are stronger than anomaly cancellation and can require the addition of exotics in the visible sector. We study such exotics and demonstrate that they may account for the modest excess at $750$ GeV in recent diphoton resonance searches performed by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. In a previous analysis of type II MSSM D-brane quivers we systematically added up to five exotics for the sake of satisfying string consistency conditions. Using this dataset, we demonstrate that 89780 of the 89964 quivers have exotics, 78155 of which include singlets that may couple to MSSM or exotic multiplets with coupling structures governed by $U(1)$ symmetries that are often anomalous. We demonstrate that certain sets of exotics are far preferred over others and study the structure of singlet couplings to heavy exotics carrying standard model charges. Typical possibilities include singlets that may decay to vector-like quarks and / or vector-like leptons and subsequently to two photons. We show that a narrow width diphoton excess can be accounted for while evading existing bounds if multiple exotics are added, with vector-like leptons of mass $M_L\lesssim 375$ GeV and vector-like quarks with masses up to $\simeq 3$ TeV. However, a large width $(Γ/M \sim 0.06)$, as suggested by the ATLAS data, cannot be easily accommodated in this framework. Renormalization group equations with GUT-scale boundary conditions show that these supersymmetric models are perturbative and stable. Type IIA compactifications on toroidal orbifolds allow for $O(10)$ Yukawa couplings in the ultraviolet. We also discuss the possibility of accounting for the diphoton excess in a low string scale scenario via the decay of string axions.

An Analysis of the Wave Equation for the $U(1)^{2}$ Gauged Supergravity Black Hole

We study the massless Klein-Gordon equation in the background of the most general rotating dyonic AdS black hole in gauged $\mathcal{N}=2$, $U(1)^{2}$ gauged supergravity in $D=4$, given by Chow and Compère [Phys. Rev. D\textbf{89} (2014) 065003]. The angular part of the separable wave equation is of the Heun type, while the radial part is a Fuchsian equation with five regular singularities. The radial equation is further analyzed and written in a specific form, that reveals the pole structure of the horizon equation, whose residua are expressed in terms of the surface gravities and angular velocities associated with respective horizons. The near-horizon (near-)extremal limits of the solution are also studied, where the expected hidden conformal symmetry is revealed. Furthermore, we present the retarded Green's functions for these limiting cases. We also comment on the generality of the charge-dependent parts of the metric parameters and address some further examples of limiting cases.

F-Theory Vacua with Z_3 Gauge Symmetry

Discrete gauge groups naturally arise in F-theory compactifications on genus-one fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. Such geometries appear in families that are parameterized by the Tate-Shafarevich group of the genus-one fibration. While the F-theory compactification on any element of this family gives rise to the same physics, the corresponding M-theory compactifications on these geometries differ and are obtained by a fluxed circle reduction of the former. In this note, we focus on an element of order three in the Tate-Shafarevich group of the general cubic. We discuss how the different M-theory vacua and the associated discrete gauge groups can be obtained by Higgsing of a pair of five-dimensional U(1) symmetries. The Higgs fields arise from vanishing cycles in $I_2$-fibers that appear at certain codimension two loci in the base. We explicitly identify all three curves that give rise to the corresponding Higgs fields. In this analysis the investigation of different resolved phases of the underlying geometry plays a crucial rôle.

Addentum to: Conformal Invariance and Near-extreme Rotating AdS Black Holes

We obtained retarded Green's functions for massless scalar fields in the background of near-extreme, near-horizon rotating charged black hole of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity in Phys. Rev. D84, 044018 (2011). For general nonextreme black holes, we also derived the radial part of the massless Klein-Gordon equation with zero azimuthal-angle eigenvalues, and showed that it is a general Heun's equation with a regular singularity at each horizon $u_k$ ($k=1,2,3$) and at infinity. We derived explicitly that the residuum of a pole at each $u_k$ is associated with the surface gravity there. In this addendum, probing regular singularities at each $u_k$ we complete the derivation of the full radial equation with nonzero azimuthal-angle eigenvalues. The residua now include modifications by the angular velocities at respective horizons. This result completes the analysis of the wave equation for the massless Klein-Gordon equation for the general rotating charged black hole of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity.

Chiral Four-Dimensional F-Theory Compactifications With SU(5) and Multiple U(1)-Factors

We develop geometric techniques to determine the spectrum and the chiral indices of matter multiplets for four-dimensional F-theory compactifications on elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfolds with rank two Mordell-Weil group. The general elliptic fiber is the Calabi-Yau onefold in dP_2. We classify its resolved elliptic fibrations over a general base B. The study of singularities of these fibrations leads to explicit matter representations, that we determine both for U(1)xU(1) and SU(5)xU(1)xU(1) constructions. We determine for the first time certain matter curves and surfaces using techniques involving prime ideals. The vertical cohomology ring of these fourfolds is calculated for both cases and general formulas for the Euler numbers are derived. Explicit calculations are presented for a specific base B=P^3. We determine the general G_4-flux that belongs to H^{(2,2)}_V of the resolved Calabi-Yau fourfolds. As a by-product, we derive for the first time all conditions on G_4-flux in general F-theory compactifications with a non-holomorphic zero section. These conditions have to be formulated after a circle reduction in terms of Chern-Simons terms on the 3D Coulomb branch and invoke M-theory/F-theory duality. New Chern-Simons terms are generated by Kaluza-Klein states of the circle compactification. We explicitly perform the relevant field theory computations, that yield non-vanishing results precisely for fourfolds with a non-holomorphic zero section. Taking into account the new Chern-Simons terms, all 4D matter chiralities are determined via 3D M-theory/F-theory duality. We independently check these chiralities using the subset of matter surfaces we determined. The presented techniques are general and do not rely on toric data.

On finiteness of Type IIB compactifications: Magnetized branes on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds

The string landscape satisfies interesting finiteness properties imposed by supersymmetry and string-theoretical consistency conditions. We study N=1 supersymmetric compactifications of Type IIB string theory on smooth elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds at large volume with magnetized D9-branes and D5-branes. We prove that supersymmetry and tadpole cancellation conditions imply that there is a finite number of such configurations. In particular, we derive an explicitly computable bound on the number of magnetic flux quanta, as well as the number of D5-branes, which is independent of the continuous moduli of the setup. The proof applies if a number of easy to check geometric conditions of the twofold base are met. We show that these geometric conditions are satisfied for the almost Fano twofold bases given by each toric variety associated to a reflexive two-dimensional polytope as well as by the generic del Pezzo surfaces dP_n with n=0,...,8. Physically, this finiteness proof shows that there exist a finite collection of four-dimensional gauge groups and chiral matter spectra in the 4D supergravity theories realized by these compactifications. As a by-product we explicitly construct all generators of the Kaehler cones of dP_n and work out their relation to representation theory.

Wave Equation for the Wu Black Hole

Wu black hole is the most general solution of maximally supersymmetric gauged supergravity in D=5, containing $U(1)^{3}$ gauge symmetry. We study the separability of the massless Klein-Gordon equation and probe its singularities for a general stationary, axisymmetric metric with orthogonal transitivity, and apply the results to the Wu black hole solution. We start with the zero azimuthal-angle eigenvalues in the scalar field Ansatz and find that the residuum of a pole in the radial equation is associated with the surface gravity calculated at this horizon. We then generalize our calculations to nonzero azimuthal eigenvalues and probing each horizon singularity, we show that the residua of the singularities for each horizon are in general associated with a specific combination of the surface gravity and the angular velocities at the associated horizon. It turns out that for the Wu black hole both the radial and angular equations are general Heun's equations with four regular singularities.

F-Theory Compactifications with Multiple U(1)-Factors: Constructing Elliptic Fibrations with Rational Sections

We study F-theory compactifications with U(1)xU(1) gauge symmetry on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with a rank two Mordell-Weil group. We find that the natural presentation of an elliptic curve E with two rational points and a zero point is the generic Calabi-Yau onefold in dP_2. We determine the birational map to its Tate and Weierstrass form and the coordinates of the two rational points in Weierstrass form. We discuss its resolved elliptic fibrations over a general base B and classify them in the case of B=P^2. A thorough analysis of the generic codimension two singularities of these elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds is presented. This determines the general U(1)xU(1)-charges of matter in corresponding F-theory compactifications. The matter multiplicities for the fibration over P^2 are determined explicitly and shown to be consistent with anomaly cancellation. Explicit toric examples are constructed, both with U(1)xU(1) and SU(5)xU(1)xU(1) gauge symmetry. As a by-product, we prove the birational equivalence of the two elliptic fibrations with elliptic fibers in the two blow-ups Bl_(1,0,0)P^2(1,2,3) and Bl_(0,1,0)P^2(1,1,2) employing birational maps and extremal transitions.

General black holes, untwisted

We use solution-generating techniques to construct interpolating geometries between general asymptotically flat, charged, rotating, non-extremal black holes in four and five dimensions and their subtracted geometries. In the four-dimensional case, this is achieved by the use of Harrison transformations, whereas in the five-dimensional case we use STU transformations. We also give the interpretation of these solution-generating transformations in terms of string (pseudo)-dualities, showing that they correspond to combinations of T-dualities and Melvin twists. Upon uplift to one dimension higher, these dualities allow us to "untwist" general black holes to AdS_3 times a sphere.

Anomaly Cancellation And Abelian Gauge Symmetries In F-theory

We study 4D F-theory compactifications on singular Calabi-Yau fourfolds with fluxes. The resulting N=1 effective theories can admit non-Abelian and U(1) gauge groups as well as charged chiral matter. In these setups we analyze anomaly cancellation and the generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism. This requires the study of 3D N=2 theories obtained by a circle compactification and their M-theory duals. Reducing M-theory on resolved Calabi-Yau fourfolds corresponds to considering the effective theory on the 3D Coulomb branch in which certain massive states are integrated out. Both 4D gaugings and 3D one-loop corrections of these massive states induce Chern-Simons terms. All 4D anomalies are captured by the one-loop terms. The ones corresponding to the mixed gauge-gravitational anomalies depend on the Kaluza-Klein vector and are induced by integrating out Kaluza-Klein modes of the U(1) charged matter. In M-theory all Chern-Simons terms classically arise from G_4-flux. We find that F-theory fluxes implement automatically the 4D Green-Schwarz mechanism if non-trivial geometric relations for the resolved Calabi-Yau fourfold are satisfied. We confirm these relations in various explicit examples and elucidate the general construction of U(1) symmetries in F-theory. We also compare anomaly cancellation in F-theory with its analog in Type IIB orientifold setups.

Implications of String Constraints for Exotic Matter and Z' s Beyond the Standard Model

Global consistency of string compactifications places constraints on the chiral matter spectrum of a gauge theory which include those necessary for the absence of cubic nonabelian anomalies, but also contain some additional conditions. In the class of theories we study, some of these are present in a field theory augmented by anomalous U(1)'s and Chern-Simons terms, but some are genuinely not present in field theory. Their violation has phenomenological implications, rendering inconsistent many quiver gauge theories with the chiral matter spectrum of the MSSM. The inconsistent MSSM quivers often violate the constraints in a particular way that is suggestive of what matter must be added for consistency. The preferred matter additions are MSSM singlets with anomalous U(1) charge, hyperchargeless SU(2) triplets, quasichiral Higgs or lepton isodoublet pairs, quasichiral quark isosinglet pairs, and nonabelian singlets with charge +-1. Smaller numbers of quark isodoublet pairs, lepton pairs with charges (+- 1,+- 2), and chiral fourth families are also found. We present the results of systematic analyses including multiplicity counts of matter beyond the standard model and also study the possibility of using the singlets for a dynamical perturbative μ-term or for neutrino mass. We also systematically study the appearance of additional non-anomalous U(1)' symmetries in the low energy theory and find that family non-universality is very common. These new physics effects may be observable at the LHC even for a large string scale close to the Planck scale.

On Seven-Brane Dependent Instanton Prefactors in F-theory

We study the moduli-dependent prefactor of M5-instanton corrections to the superpotential in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications. In light of the M-theory and type IIb limits and also heterotic duality, we propose that the explicit moduli dependence of the prefactor can be computed by a study of zero modes localized at intersections between the instanton and seven-branes. We present an instanton prefactor in an E_6 F-theory GUT which does not admit a heterotic dual and show that it vanishes if and only if a point of E_8 enhancement is present in the instanton worldvolume. More generically, we discuss the relationship between points of E_8 and superpotential zeroes and give sufficient conditions for such a point to cause a zero, even for an SU(5) GUT. We scan a large class of compactifications for instanton physics and demonstrate that many instantons have the same prefactor structure. We discuss the associated implications and complications for moduli stabilization. We present an explicit resolution and construction of G-flux in a generic E_6 GUT and identify a global compactification of the local model spectral cover which happens to facilitate prefactor computations. Via a Leray spectral sequence, we demonstrate the relationship between right-movers of heterotic worldsheet instantons, 3-3 strings of euclidean D3 instantons, and the Fermi zero modes of M5-instantons.

Stringy Hidden Valleys

We study gauge theories where quasi-hidden sectors are added to the MSSM for the sake of string consistency conditions which would otherwise not be satisfied. We focus on quiver gauge theories motivated by weakly coupled type II orientifold compactifications. Model independent features in this class include an anomalous U(1)_V symmetry which protects messenger masses and has strong consequences for superpotential couplings, a rich phenomenology of heavy and light Z' bosons, and axionic couplings required for anomaly cancellation via the Green-Schwarz mechanism. We discuss possibilities for dark matter and supersymmetry breaking in light of these generic features. Dark matter is necessarily non-baryonic, though many dark matter candidates have weak interactions. Most models have a U(1)_V Y Y anomaly whose cancellation requires couplings which allow for dark matter annihilation into photons through intermediate axions or anomalous Z' bosons, as in two recently proposed scenarios. There is often an additional non-anomalous U(1) symmetry which can give rise to a Fayet-like model of metastable supersymmetry breaking. Breaking of supersymmetry via SQCD can also be realized and flavor masses are often protected. Natural possibilities for mediation include gauge mediation, Z' mediation, and D-instanton mediation, though it is not possible to realize minimal gauge mediation with messengers added for string consistency.

Ultraviolet Completions of Axigluon Models and Their Phenomenological Consequences

The CDF and D0 collaborations have observed a forward-backward asymmetry in t-tbar production at large invariant mass in excess of the standard model prediction. One explanation involves a heavy color octet particle with axial vector couplings to quarks (an axigluon). We describe and contrast various aspects of axigluons obtained from the breaking of a chiral SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R gauge theory both from the standpoint of a string-inspired field theory and from a quiver analysis of a local type IIa intersecting brane construction. Special attention is paid to the additional constraints and issues that arise from these classes of top-down constructions compared with the more common effective field theory approach. These include the implications of a perturbative connection to a large scale; Yukawa couplings, which must be generated from higher-dimensional operators in many constructions; anomaly cancellation, in particular the implications of the required exotics for the axigluon width, perturbativity, and the signatures from exotic decays; the possibility of family nonuniversality via mirror representations, mixing with exotics, or additional SU(3) factors; the additional constraints from anomalous U(1) factors in the string constructions; tadpole cancellation, which implies new uncolored matter; the prevention of string-scale masses for vector pairs; and various phenomenological issues involving FCNC, CKM constraints, and the axigluon coupling strength. It is concluded that the construction of viable axigluon models from type IIa or similar constructions is problematic and would require considerable fine tuning, but is not entirely excluded. These considerations illustrate the importance of top-down constraints on possible TeV-scale physics, independent of the ultimate explanation of the t-tbar asymmetry.

Conformal Invariance and Near-extreme Rotating AdS Black Holes

We obtain retarded Green's functions for massless scalar fields in the background of near-extreme, near-horizon rotating charged black holes of five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity. The radial part of the (separable) massless Klein-Gordon equation in such general black hole backgrounds is Heun's equation, due to the singularity structure associated with the three black hole horizons. On the other hand, we find the scaling limit for the near-extreme, near-horizon background where the radial equation reduces to a Hypergeometric equation whose $SL(2,{\bf R})^2$ symmetry signifies the underlying two-dimensional conformal invariance, with the two sectors governed by the respective Frolov-Thorne temperatures.

Conformal Symmetry for General Black Holes

We show that the warp factor of a generic asymptotically flat black hole in five dimensions can be adjusted such that a conformal symmetry emerges. The construction preserves all near horizon properties of the black holes, such as the thermodynamic potentials and the entropy. We interpret the geometry with modified asymptotic behavior as the "bare" black hole, with the ambient flat space removed. Our warp factor subtraction generalizes hidden conformal symmetry and applies whether or not rotation is significant. We also find a relation to standard AdS/CFT correspondence by embedding the black holes in six dimensions. The asymptotic conformal symmetry guarantees a dual CFT description of the general rotating black holes.

Global F-theory Models: Instantons and Gauge Dynamics

We elucidate certain aspects of F-theory gauge dynamics, due to quantum splitting of certain brane stacks, which are absent in the Type IIB limit. We also provide a working implementation of an algorithm for computing cohomology of line bundles on arbitrary toric varieties. This should be of general use for studying the physics of global Type IIB and F-theory models, in particular for the explicit counting of zero modes for rigid F-theory instantons which contribute to charged matter couplings. We illustrate the discussion by constructing and analyzing in detail a compact F-theory GUT model in which a D-brane instanton generates the top Yukawa coupling non-perturbatively.

Three Looks at Instantons in F-theory -- New Insights from Anomaly Inflow, String Junctions and Heterotic Duality

We discuss the physics of zero modes of ED3/M5 instantons at strong coupling from three different viewpoints. Motivated by an anomaly inflow argument, we give a prescription for describing neutral instanton modes in terms of string junctions, unifying the language with that used for charged modes. We proceed to discuss the physics of charged modes as we move between different points in the moduli space of F-theory compactified on K3. In particular, we show how, in going from the E6^3 point to the SO(8)^4 point, the structure of SO(8) zero modes arises from a non-trivial mixing of massless 27's of E6 with massive modes stretching between different E6 stacks. We observe a similar mixing in going from SO(8)^4 to E6^3. Finally, we see how the zeroes of some exact worldsheet instanton superpotentials in heterotic backgrounds preserving E6 symmetry admit a physical interpretation in terms of low energy physics. We also discuss the behavior of the dual F-theory compactification as the superpotential approaches a zero. An interesting observation is that in the examples we study some of the zeroes of the superpotential correspond to points of E8 enhancement in the worldvolume of the dual M5 instanton, and more generally from enhancements of the singularity over the worldvolume of the instanton.

On the computation of non-perturbative effective potentials in the string theory landscape -- IIB/F-theory perspective

We discuss a number of issues arising when computing non-perturbative effects systematically across the string theory landscape. In particular, we cast the study of fairly generic physical properties into the language of computability/number theory and show that this amounts to solving systems of diophantine equations. In analogy to the negative solution to Hilbert's 10th problem, we argue that in such systematic studies there may be no algorithm by which one can determine all physical effects. We take large volume type IIB compactifications as an example, with the physical property of interest being the low-energy non-perturbative F-terms of a generic compactification. A similar analysis is expected to hold for other kinds of string vacua, and we discuss in particular the extension of our ideas to F-theory. While these results imply that it may not be possible to answer systematically certain physical questions about generic type IIB compactifications, we identify particular Calabi-Yau manifolds in which the diophantine equations become linear, and thus can be systematically solved. As part of the study of the required systematics of F-terms, we develop technology for computing Z_2 equivariant line bundle cohomology on toric varieties, which determines the presence of particular instanton zero modes via the Koszul complex. This is of general interest for realistic IIB model building on complete intersections in toric ambient spaces.

Singlet Extensions of the MSSM in the Quiver Landscape

We map out possible extensions of the MSSM in the context of type II string theory. We systematically investigate three-stack and four-stack quivers which realize the MSSM spectrum with the addition of a single MSSM singlet S with an allowed S H_u H_d term, which can lead to a dynamical electroweak-scale mu-term. We present the three quivers which satisfy stringent string-theoretic and phenomenological constraints, including the presence of non-zero masses for all three families of quarks and leptons, the perturbative and non-perturbative absence of R-parity violating couplings and rapid dimension-five proton decay, and a mechanism for small neutrino masses. We find that these quivers can realize many models in the class of singlet-extended (supersymmetric) standard models, as D-instanton effects can in principle generate a superpotential of the form f(S), where f is a polynomial. Finally, we address the issue of the stabilization and decoupling of charged moduli which generically appear in D-instanton corrections to the superpotential.

The Weinberg Operator and a Lower String Scale in Orientifold Compactifications

We investigate the interplay between the string scale and phenomenological scales in orientifold compactifications. Specifically, we discuss in generality the tension that often arises in accounting for neutrino masses, Yukawa couplings, and a mu-term of the correct order and show that it often constrains the string scale M_s. The discussion focuses on two scenarios where, (1) the observed order of the neutrino masses are accounted for by a D-instanton induced "stringy" Weinberg operator, or (2) effectively via the type I seesaw mechanism with an instanton induced Majorana mass term. In both scenarios, the string scale might be further constrained if the suppression factor of a single D-instanton must account for two of the phenomenological scales. For the sake of concreteness, we present phenomenologically viable quivers which exhibit these effects and perform a systematic analysis of four-stack and five-stack quivers which give rise to the exact MSSM spectrum and account for the order of the neutrino masses via the stringy Weinberg operator.

Branes and instantons at angles and the F-theory lift of O(1) instantons

We discuss the physics of D-branes and D-brane instantons intersecting at angles, focusing on the (non)generation of a superpotential in the worldvolume theory of the branes. This is a short review of the results in arXiv:0905.1694, where we further emphasize both the macroscopic and microscopic structure of the manifestly supersymmetric instanton action. We also comment on the lift of O(1) instantons to F-theory.

Mass Hierarchies from MSSM Orientifold Compactifications

We investigate phenomenologically viable four- and five-stack MSSM D-brane quivers which exhibit realistic fermion mass hierarchies. In our analysis, the mass hierarchies arise either from higher order terms containing the VEV's of SM singlets or from D-instanton effects, where the latter utilizes either family splitting or a factorizable Yukawa matrix. Extending the systematic bottom-up analysis of arXiv:0905.3379, we present the only four-stack quiver with a semi-realistic Yukawa texture. Investigation of five-stack MSSM models reveals many more quivers with analogous Yukawa textures, as well as a few examples which exhibit three different mass scales for the up-quarks, down-quarks, and electrons. Potential problems in this class of quivers are the presence of U(1) instantons, which might lead to undesired effects, such as R-parity violating couplings, and the presence of dimension 5 operators that could lead to rapid proton decay. We present a five-stack setup which overcomes all of these problems and exhibits three different mass scales for the up-quarks, down-quarks and electrons.

Mass Hierarchies vs. Proton Decay in MSSM Orientifold Compactifications

We review two systematic bottom-up analyses of MSSM quivers recently performed by the authors. We extend the analysis of arXiv:0905.3379 by including constraints arising from proton decay via dimension 5 operators and present all four-stack quivers in the Madrid embedding which satisfy this additional constraint. Furthermore, we investigate and make precise the interplay between mass hierarchies obtained via factorizable Yukawa textures and the presence of dimension 5 proton decay operators in MSSM orientifold compactifications. We discuss this issue in a five-stack quiver, first presented in arXiv:0909.4292, which exhibits proper mass hierarchies and no rapid proton decay.

Realistic Yukawa Structures from Orientifold Compactifications

We perform a systematic analysis of globally consistent D-brane quivers which realize the MSSM, and analyze them with respect to their Yukawa couplings. Often, desired couplings are perturbatively forbidden due to the presence of global U(1) symmetries. We investigate the conditions under which D-brane instantons will induce these missing couplings without generating other phenomenological drawbacks, such as R-parity violating couplings or a mu-term which is too large. Furthermore, we systematically analyze which quivers allow for a mechanism that can account for the small neutrino masses and other experimentally observed hierarchies. We show that only a small fraction of the globally consistent D-brane quivers exhibits phenomenology compatible with experimental observations.

$V'Z$ and $V'W$ Production as Tests of Heavy Gauge Boson Couplings at Future Hadron Colliders

We point out that the production cross section of $pp\to V'V$, with $V'=W',Z'$ and $V=W,Z$ is a useful diagnostic of $V'$ gauge couplings at future hadron colliders. For $M_{Z'}\simeq1$ TeV it would allow determination of combinations of $Z'$ gauge couplings to the quarks to around 10 percent. An analysis of the extraction of gauge couplings from the complementary tests: forward-backward asymmetry, rare decays $pp\to V'\to f_1{\bar f_2}V$, and the production cross section $pp\to V'V$ is given in a model-independent framework. Four ratios of charges are needed to characterize a general gauge theory with an additional family-independent $U_1'$ factor. We show that there are four functions of these ratios observable at hadron colliders, but for projected SSC and LHC luminosities only two combinations can be extracted. These yield a significant discrimination between interesting GUT-motivated models. Clean tests of whether a new $W'$ couples to right-handed currents, of the ratio $g_R/g_L$ of gauge couplings, and of the non-abelian vertex in left-right symmetric models are described.
