A viral propagation model with nonlinear infection rate and free boundaries

In this paper we put forward a viral propagation model with nonlinear infection rate and free boundaries and investigate the dynamical properties. This model is composed of two ordinary differential equations and one partial differential equation, in which the spatial range of the first equation is the whole space $\mathbb{R}$, and the last two equations have free boundaries. As a new mathematical model, we prove the existence, uniqueness and uniform estimates of global solution, and provide the criteria for spreading and vanishing, and long time behavior of the solution components $u,v,w$. Comparing with the corresponding ordinary differential systems, the {\it Basic Reproduction Number} ${\cal R}_0$ plays a different role. We find that when ${\cal R}_0\le 1$, the virus cannot spread successfully; when ${\cal R}_0>1$, the successful spread of virus depends on the initial value and varying parameters.

Global stability of spatially nonhomogeneous steady state solution in a diffusive Holling-Tanner predator-prey model

The global stability of the nonhomogeneous positive steady state solution to a diffusive Holling-Tanner predator-prey model in a heterogeneous environment is proved by using a newly constructed Lyapunov function and estimates of nonconstant steady state solutions. The techniques developed here can be adapted for other spatially heterogeneous consumer-resource models.

Positive Solutions of Competition Model with Saturation

In this paper, the positive solutions of a diffusive competition model with saturation are mainly discussed. Under certain conditions, the stability and multiplicities of coexistence states are analyzed. And by using the topological degree theory in cones, it is proved that the problem has at least two positive solutions under certain conditions. Finally, investigating the bifurcation of coexistence states emanating from the semi-trivial solutions, some instability and multiplicity results of coexistence state are expressed.

Global stability of nonhomogeneous equilibrium solution for the diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition model

A diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition model is considered for the combined effect of spatial dispersal and spatial variations of resource on the population persistence and exclusion. First it is shown that in a two-species system in which the diffusion coefficients, resource functions and competition rates are all spatially heterogeneous, the positive equilibrium solution is globally asymptotically stable when it exists. Secondly the existence and global asymptotic stability of the positive and semi-trivial equilibrium solutions are obtained for the model with arbitrary number of species under the assumption of spatially heterogeneous resource distribution. A new Lyapunov functional method is developed to prove the global stability of a non-constant equilibrium solution in heterogeneous environment.

A diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary and sign-changing coefficient in time-periodic environment

This paper concerns a diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary and sign-changing intrinsic growth rate in heterogeneous time-periodic environment, in which the variable intrinsic growth rate may be "very negative" in a "suitable large region". Such a model can be used to describe the spreading of a new or invasive species, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. In the case of higher space dimensions with radial symmetry and the intrinsic growth rate has a positive lower bound, this problem has been studied by Du, Guo and Peng . They established a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, the sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing and estimate of the asymptotic spreading speed. In the present paper, we show that the above results are retained for our problem. This paper has been submitted to Journal of Functional Analysis in August 5, 2014 (JFA-14-548).

A reaction-diffusion-advection equation with mixed and free boundary conditions

We investigate a reaction-diffusion-advection equation of the form $u_t-u_{xx}+βu_x=f(u)$ $(t>0,\,0<x<h(t))$ with mixed boundary condition at $x=0$ and a free boundary condition at $x=h(t)$. Such a model may be applied to describe the dynamical process of a new or invasive species adopting a combination of random movement and advection upward or downward along the resource gradient, with the free boundary representing the expanding front. The goal of this paper is to understand the effect of advection environment and no flux across the left boundary on the dynamics of this species. When $|β|<c_0$, we first derive the spreading-vanishing dichotomy and sharp threshold for spreading and vanishing. Then provide a much sharper estimate for the spreading speed of $h(t)$ and the uniform convergence of $u(t,x)$ when spreading happens. For the case $|β|\geq c_0$, some results concerning spreading, virtual spreading, vanishing and virtual vanishing are obtained. Where $c_0$ is the minimal speed of traveling waves of the differential equation.

Free boundary problems for the diffusive competition system in higher dimension with sign-changing coefficients

In this article we investigate two free boundary problems for a Lotka-Volterra competition system in a higher space dimension with sign-changing coefficients. One may be viewed as describing how two competing species invade if they occupy an initial region, the other describes the dynamical process of a new competitor invading into the habitat of a native species. For simplicity, it is assumed that the environment is radially symmetric. The main purpose of this article is to understand the asymptotic behavior of competing species spreading via a free boundary. We derive some sufficient conditions for species spreading success and spreading failure. Moreover, when spreading successfully, we provide the long time behavior of solutions.

Free boundary problems of the competition model with sign-changing coefficients in heterogeneous time-periodic environment

In this paper we consider the diffusive competition model with free boundary in the heterogeneous time-periodic environment, in which the variable intrinsic growth rates of invasive and native species may change signs and be "very negative" in a "suitable large region" . The main objective is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the two competing species spreading via a free boundary. We first establish a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the two species either successfully spread to the right-half-space as time $t$ goes to infinity and survive in the new environment, or they fail to establish and will extinct in the long run. Then we study the long time behavior of solution, sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing, and estimate of the asymptotic spreading speed of the free boundary.

Note on a two-species competition-diffusion model with two free boundaries

Recently, J.-S. Guo, C.-H. Wu (Nonlinearity, 28(2015), 1-27) and C.-H. Wu (J. Differential Equations, 259(3)(2015), 873-897) studied a two-species competition-diffusion model with two free boundaries. The existence, uniqueness and long time behavior of global solution were established. In this note we still discuss the long time behavior of global solution and provide some new results and simpler proofs.

Semi-wave and spreading speed for the diffusive competition model with a free boundary

We determine the asymptotic spreading speed of an invasive species, which invades the territory of a native competitor, governed by a diffusive competition model with a free boundary in a spherically symmetric setting. This free boundary problem was studied recently in [7] but only rough bounds of the spreading speed was obtained there. We show in this paper that the spreading speed has an asymptotic limit (as time goes to infnity), which is given by a certain traveling wave type system of one space dimension, called a semi-wave. This appears to be the first result that gives the precise asymptotic spreading speed for a two species system with free boundaries.

A Free Boundary Problem for a Predator-prey Model with Double Free Boundaries

In this paper we investigate a free boundary problem for a predator-prey model with double free boundaries in one space dimension. This system models the expanding of an invasive or new predator species in which the free boundaries represent expanding fronts of the predator species and are described by Stefan-like condition. We prove a spreading-vanishing dichotomy for this model, namely the predator species either successfully spreads to infinity as $t\to \infty$ at both fronts and survives in the new environment, or it fails to establish and dies out in the long run while the prey species stabilizes at a positive equilibrium state. The long time behavior of solution and criteria for spreading and vanishing are also obtained.

A free boundary problem of prey-predator model with variable intrinsic growth rate for predator

This paper deals with a free boundary problem of the Lotka-Volterra type prey-predator model with variable intrinsic growth rate for predator over a one dimensional habitat, in which the free boundary represents the spreading front and is caused only by the prey. In this problem it is assumed that the species can only invade further into the new environment from the right end of the initial region, and the spreading front expands at a speed that is proportional to the prey's population gradient at the front. Moreover, the variable intrinsic growth rate $r(t,x)$ is positive in pointwise but may be very small as $t\to\infty$ or $x\to\infty$. The main objective is to realize the dynamics/variations of prey, predator and free boundary. We first study the long time behavior of $(u,v)$ for the vanishing case ($h_\infty<\infty$). Then we find the criteria for spreading and vanishing. At last, the long time behavior of $(u,v)$ for the spreading case ($h_\infty=\infty$) is discussed. Theorems 2.2, 2.3 and 4.1 together establish a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Moreover, our model exhibits very different properties from the free boundary problems of prey-predator model in which the free boundary is caused only by the predator or by both prey and predator.

A semilinear parabolic system with a free boundary

This paper deals with a semilinear parabolic system with free boundary in one space dimension. We suppose that unknown functions $u$ and $v$ undergo nonlinear reactions $u^q$ and $v^p$, and exist initially in a interval $\{0\leq x\leq s(0)\}$, but expand to the right with spreading front $\{x=s(t)\}$, with $s(t)$ evolving according to the free boundary condition $s'(t)=-μ(u_x+ρv_x)$, where $p,\, q,\, μ, \,ρ$ are given positive constants. The main purpose of this paper is to understand the existence, uniqueness, regularity and long time behavior of positive solution or maximal positive solution. Firstly, we prove that this problem has a unique positive solution $(u,v,s)$ defined in the maximal existence interval $[0,T_{\max})$ when $p,\,q\geq 1$, while it has a unique maximal positive solution $(u,v,s)$ defined in the maximal existence interval $[0,T_{\max})$ when $p<1$ or $q<1$. Moreover, $(u,v,s)$ and $T_{\max}$ have property that either (i) $T_{\max}=+\infty$, or (ii) $T_{\max}<+\infty$ and $$ \limsup_{T\nearrow T_{\max}}\|u,\,v\|_{L^{\infty}([0,T]\times[0,s(t)])}=+\infty.$$ Then we study the regularity of $(u,v)$ and $s$. At last, we discuss the global existence ($T_{\max}=+\infty$), finite time blow-up ($T_{\max}<+\infty$), and long time behavior of bounded global solution.

Free boundary problems for a Lotka-Volterra competition system

In this paper we investigate two free boundary problems for a Lotka-Volterra type competition model in one space dimension. The main objective is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the two competing species spreading via a free boundary. We prove a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the two species either successfully spread to the entire space as time t goes to infinity and survive in the new environment, or they fail to establish and die out in the long run. The long time behavior of the solutions and criteria for spreading and vanishing are also obtained. This paper is an improvement and extension of J. Guo and C. Wu.

Initial and boundary blow-up problem for $p$-Laplacian parabolic equation with general absorption

In this article, we investigate the initial and boundary blow-up problem for the $p$-Laplacian parabolic equation $u_t-Δ_p u=-b(x,t)f(u)$ over a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N\ge2$, where $Δ_pu={\rm div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)$ with $p>1$, and $f(u)$ is a function of regular variation at infinity. We study the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions, and their asymptotic behaviors near the parabolic boundary.

On some Free Boundary Problems of the Prey-predator Model

In this paper we investigate some free boundary problems for the Lotka-Volterra type prey-predator model in one space dimension. The main objective is to understand the asymptotic behavior of the two species (prey and predator) spreading via a free boundary. We prove a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, namely the two species either successfully spread to the entire space as time $t$ goes to infinity and survive in the new environment, or they fail to establish and die out in the long run. The long time behavior of solution and criteria for spreading and vanishing are also obtained. Finally, when spreading successfully, we provide an estimate to show that the spreading speed (if exists) cannot be faster than the minimal speed of traveling wavefront solutions for the prey-predator model on the whole real line without a free boundary.

The diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary and sign-changing coefficient

This short paper concerns a diffusive logistic equation with the heterogeneous environment and a free boundary, which is formulated to study the spread of an invasive species, where the free boundary represents the expanding front. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is derived, namely the species either successfully spreads to the right-half-space as time $t\to\infty$ and survives (persists) in the new environment, or it fails to establish and will extinct in the long run. The sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing is also obtained. When spreading happens, we estimate the asymptotic spreading speed of the free boundary.
