Operators For Generic Effective Field Theory at any Dimension: On-shell Amplitude Basis Construction

We describe a general procedure to construct the independent and complete operator bases for generic Lorentz invariant effective field theories, given any kind of gauge symmetry and field content, up to any mass dimension. By considering the operator as contact on-shell amplitude, the so-called amplitude operator correspondence, we provide a unified construction of the Lorentz and gauge and flavor structures by Young Tableau tensor. Several bases are constructed to emphasize different aspects: independence (y-basis and m-basis), repeated fields with flavors (p-basis), and conserved quantum numbers (j-basis). We also provide new algorithms for finding the m-basis by defining inner products for group factors and the p-basis by constructing the matrix representations of the Young symmetrizers from group generators. The on-shell amplitude basis gives us a systematic way to convert any operator into such basis, so that the conversions between any other operator bases can be easily done by linear algebra. All of these are implemented in a Mathematica package: ABC4EFT (Amplitude Basis Construction for Effective Field Theories).

Theoretical developments in the SMEFT at dimension-8 and beyond

In this contribution to the Snowmass 2021 process we review theoretical developments in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) with a focus on effects at the dimension-8 level and beyond. We review the theoretical advances that led to the complete construction of the operator bases for the dimension-8 and dimension-9 SMEFT Lagrangians. We discuss the possibility of obtaining all-orders results in the $1/Λ$ expansion for certain SMEFT observables as well as the current status of renormalization group running and implications for positivity, and briefly present the on-shell approach to constructing SMEFT amplitudes. Finally we present several new phenomenological effects that first arise at dimension-8 and discuss the impact of these terms on experimental analyses.

New Selection Rules from Angular Momentum Conservation

We derive the generalized partial wave expansion for $M \rightarrow N$ scattering amplitude in terms of spinor helicity variables. The basis amplitudes of the expansion with definite angular momentum $j$ consist of the Poincare Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, while $j$ constrains the UV physics that could generate the corresponding operators at tree level. Moreover, we obtain a series of selection rules that restrict the anomalous dimension matrix of effective operators and the way how effective operators contribute to some $2 \rightarrow N$ amplitudes at the loop level.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in a Scalar-Assisted Vector-Like Fermion Model

We extend the standard model to a scalar-assisted vector-like fermion model to realize electroweak baryogenesis. The extended Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, due to the mixing among the vector-like quark and the standard model quarks, provides additional sources of the CP violation. Together with the enhancement from large vector-like quark mass, a large enough baryon-to-photon ratio could be obtained. The strongly first-order phase transition could be realized via the potential barrier which separate the broken minimum and the symmetric minimum in the scalar potential. We investigate in detail the one-loop temperature-dependent effective potential, and perform a random parameter scan to study the allowed parameter region that satisfies the strongly first order phase transition criteria $v_c \ge T_c$. Several distinct patterns of phase transition are classified and discussed. Among these patterns, large trilinear mass term between the Higgs boson and the scalar is preferred, for it controls the width of the potential barrier. Our results indicate large quartic scalar couplings, and moderate mixing angle between the Higgs boson and the new scalar. This parameter region could be further explored at the Run 2 LHC.

Stabilizing Electroweak Vacuum in a Vector-like Fermion Model

To avoid possible electroweak vacuum instability in the vector-like fermion model, we introduce a new singlet scalar to the model, which couples to the vector-like fermion, and also mixes with the Higgs boson after spontaneous symmetry breaking. We investigate the vector-like fermion predominantly coupled to the third generation quarks, and its mass is generated from the vacuum expectation value of the new scalar field in the model. In this setup, as running towards high energies, the new scalar provides positive contribution to the running of the higgs quartic coupling, and the matching on the scale of the scalar mass gives rise to a threshod effect that lifts up the higgs quartic coupling strength. The two effects help stabilize the electroweak vacuum of the Higgs potential. Therefore, this setup could evade possible vacuum instability in the vector-like fermion model. We show that a large range of parameter space is allowed to have both stable Higgs vacuum and perturbativity of all the running couplings, up to the Planck scale. We also examine the experimental constraints from the electroweak precision observables such as oblique corrections S, T and non-oblique corrections to the Zbb coupling, the Higgs coupling precision measurements, and the current LHC direct searches.
