Early Universe Higgs dynamics in the presence of the Higgs-inflaton and non-minimal Higgs-gravity couplings

Apparent metastability of the electroweak vacuum poses a number of cosmological questions. These concern evolution of the Higgs field to the current vacuum, and its stability during and after inflation. Higgs-inflaton and non-minimal Higgs-gravity interactions can make a crucial impact on these considerations potentially solving the problems. In this work, we allow for these couplings to be present simultaneously and study their interplay. We find that different combinations of the Higgs-inflaton and non-minimal Higgs-gravity couplings induce effective Higgs mass during and after inflation. This crucially affects the Higgs stability considerations during preheating. In particular, a wide range of the couplings leading to stable solutions becomes allowed.

Postinflationary vacuum instability and Higgs-inflaton couplings

The Higgs-inflaton coupling plays an important role in the Higgs field dynamics in the early Universe. Even a tiny coupling generated at loop level can have a dramatic effect on the fate of the electroweak vacuum. Such Higgs-inflaton interaction is present both at the trilinear and quartic levels in realistic reheating models. In this work, we examine the Higgs dynamics during the preheating epoch, focusing on the effects of the parametric and tachyonic resonances. We use lattice simulations and other numerical tools in our studies. We find that the resonances can induce large fluctuations of the Higgs field which destabilize the electroweak vacuum. Our considerations thus provide an upper bound on quartic and trilinear interactions between the Higgs and the inflaton. We conclude that there exists a favourable range of the couplings within which the Higgs field is stabilized during both inflation and preheating epochs.

ADM Analysis of Gravity Models within the Framework of Bimetric Variational Formalism

Bimetric variational formalism was recently employed to construct novel bimetric gravity models. In these models an affine connection is generated by an additional tensor field which is independent of the physical metric. In this work we demonstrate how the ADM decomposition can be applied to study such models and provide some technical intermediate details. Using ADM decomposition we are able to prove that a linear model is unstable as has previously been indicated by perturbative analysis. Moreover, we show that it is also very difficult if not impossible to construct a non-linear model which is ghost-free within the framework of bimetric variational formalism. However, we demonstrate that viable models are possible along similar lines of thought. To this end, we consider a set up in which the affine connection is a variation of the Levi-Civita one. As a proof of principle we construct a gravity model with a massless scalar field obtained this way.

Does Planck really rule out monomial inflation?

We consider the modifications of monomial chaotic inflation models due to radiative corrections induced by inflaton couplings to bosons and/or fermions necessary for reheating. To the lowest order, ignoring gravitational corrections and treating the inflaton as a classical background field, they are of the Coleman-Weinberg type and parametrized by the renormalization scale $μ$. In cosmology, there are not enough measurements to fix $μ$ so that we end up with a family of models, each having a slightly different slope of the potential. We demonstrate by explicit calculation that within the family of chaotic $ϕ^2$ models, some may be ruled out by Planck whereas some remain perfectly viable. In contrast, radiative corrections do not seem to help chaotic $ϕ^{4}$ models to meet the Planck constraints.

Generating zeta with non-Abelian Vector Fields

In this paper the generation of the primordial curvature perturbation by vector fields of general non-Abelian groups is discussed. We show that non-Gaussianity of the perturbation is dominated by contributions from superhorizon evolution of fields. Also we find that non-Abelian vector fields of reasonably large groups can generate the total of the curvature perturbation without violating observational constraints on the angular modulation of the spectrum.

Modulation of the waterfall by a gauge field

We present the first complete calculation of the curvature perturbation generated during the hybrid inflation waterfall, caused by the coupling of the waterfall field to a gauge field A whose kinetic function f^2 depends on the inflaton field. We impose an upper bound on the field W=f*A which ensures that it has a negligible effect before the waterfall. We confirm the claim of Soda and Yokoyama, that the perturbation δW generates a statistically anisotropic spectrum and bispectrum, which could easily be observable. We also discover a new phenomenon, whereby the time-dependent `varyon' field W causes the inflaton contribution to vary during the waterfall. The varyon mechanism might be implemented also with a scalar field and might not involve the waterfall.

Parity Violating Statistical Anisotropy

Particle production of an Abelian vector boson field with an axial coupling is investigated. The conditions for the generation of scale invariant spectra for the vector field transverse components are obtained. If the vector field contributes to the curvature perturbation in the Universe, scale-invariant particle production enables it to give rise to statistical anisotropy in the spectrum and bispectrum of cosmological perturbations. The axial coupling allows particle production to be parity violating, which in turn can generate parity violating signatures in the bispectrum. The conditions for parity violation are derived and the observational signatures are obtained in the context of the vector curvaton paradigm. Two concrete examples are presented based on realistic particle theory.

Statistically anisotropic curvature perturbation generated during the waterfall

If the waterfall field of hybrid inflation couples to a U(1) gauge field, the waterfall can generate a statistically anisotropic contribution to the curvature perturbation. We investigate this possibility, generalising in several directions the seminal work of Yokoyama and Soda. The statistical anisotropy of the bispectrum could be detectable by PLANCK even if the statistical anisotropy of the spectrum is too small to detect.

The Primordial Curvature Perturbation from Vector Fields of General non-Abelian Groups

We consider the generation of primordial curvature perturbation by general non-Abelian vector fields without committing to a particular group. Self-interactions of non-Abelian fields make the field perturbation non-Gaussian. We calculate the bispectrum of the field perturbation using the in-in formalism at tree level. The bispectrum is dominated by the classical evolution of fields outside the horizon. In view of this we show that the dominant contribution can be obtained from the homogeneous classical equation of motion. Then we calculate the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation. The anisotropy in spectrum is suppressed by the number of fields. This makes it possible for vector fields to be responsible for the total curvature perturbation in the Universe without violating observational bounds on statistical anisotropy. The bispectrum of the curvature perturbation is also anisotropic. Finally we give an example of the end-of-inflation scenario in which the curvature perturbation is generated by vector gauge fields through varying gauge coupling constant(s), which in covariant derivatives couples the Higgs field to the vector fields. We find that reasonably large gauge groups may result in the observable anisotropy in the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation.

Quantum Fluctuations of Vector Fields and the Primordial Curvature Perturbation in the Universe

The δN formalism is extended to include the perturbation of the vector field. The latter is quantized in de Sitter space-time and it is found that in general the particle production process of the vector field is anisotropic. This anisotropy is parametrized by introducing two parameters p and q, which are determined by the conformal invariance breaking mechanism. If any of them are non-zero, generated ζis statistically anisotropic. Then the power spectrum of ζand the non-linearity parameter fNL have an angular modulation. This formalism is applied for two vector curvaton models and the end-of-inflation scenario. It is found that for p \ne 0, the magnitude of fNL and the direction of its angular modulation is correlated with the anisotropy in the spectrum. If p \gtrsim 1, the anisotropic part of fNL is dominant over the isotropic one. These are distinct observational signatures; their detection would be a smoking gun for a vector field contribution to ζ. In the first curvaton model the vector field is non-minimally coupled to gravity and in the second one it has a time varying kinetic function and mass. In the former, only statistically anisotropic ζcan be generated, while in the latter, isotropic ζmay be realized too. Parameter spaces for these vector curvaton scenarios are large enough for them to be realized in the particle physics models. In the end-of-inflation scenario fNL have similar properties to the vector curvaton scenario with additional anisotropic term.

Vector Curvaton with varying Kinetic Function

A new model realisation of the vector curvaton paradigm is presented and analysed. The model consists of a single massive Abelian vector field, with a Maxwell type kinetic term. By assuming that the kinetic function and the mass of the vector field are appropriately varying during inflation, it is shown that a scale invariant spectrum of superhorizon perturbations can be generated. These perturbations can contribute to the curvature perturbation of the Universe. If the vector field remains light at the end of inflation it is found that it can generate substantial statistical anisotropy in the spectrum and bispectrum of the curvature perturbation. In this case the non-Gaussianity in the curvature perturbation is predominantly anisotropic, which will be a testable prediction in the near future. If, on the other hand, the vector field is heavy at the end of inflation then it is demonstrated that particle production is approximately isotropic and the vector field alone can give rise to the curvature perturbation, without directly involving any fundamental scalar field. The parameter space for both possibilities is shown to be substantial. Finally, toy-models are presented which show that the desired variation of the mass and kinetic function of the vector field can be realistically obtained, without unnatural tunings, in the context of supergravity or superstrings.

Statistical anisotropy of the curvature perturbation from vector field perturbations

The δN formula for the primordial curvature perturbation ζis extended to include vector as well as scalar fields. Formulas for the tree-level contributions to the spectrum and bispectrum of ζare given, exhibiting statistical anisotropy. The one-loop contribution to the spectrum of ζis also worked out. We then consider the generation of vector field perturbations from the vacuum, including the longitudinal component that will be present if there is no gauge invariance. Finally, the δN formula is applied to the vector curvaton and vector inflation models with the tensor perturbation also evaluated in the latter case.

Vector Curvaton without Instabilities

A vector curvaton model with a Maxwell kinetic term and varying kinetic function and mass during inflation is studied. It is shown that, if light until the end of inflation, the vector field can generate statistical anisotropy in the curvature perturbation spectrum and bispectrum, with the latter being predominantly anisotropic. If by the end of inflation the vector field becomes heavy, then particle production is isotropic and the vector curvaton can alone generate the curvature perturbation. The model does not suffer from instabilities such as ghosts and is the only concrete model, to date, which can produce the curvature perturbation without direct involvement of fundamental scalar fields.
